RAW files in Iphoto open as JPG in PSE10
I have a new Mac Air, and have been using Iphoto '11 (9.4.2). I downloaded PSE 10 through the App Store. In Iphoto I have clicked the "advanced" tabs to use PSE 10 as external editor and to export files as RAW. However, whenever I try to open a RAW file in PSE 10, it becomes a JPEG. This is true for both NEF (Nikon d300) and RAF (Fujix-100) files. It is also true whether I try to open the file through Iphoto by clicking the edit button (with PSE 10 as the external editor), or opening the Iphoto file directly through PSE 10. Also, when in Iphoto, it shows the file accurately as either NEF or RAF), and I can use the RAW editing in Iphoto.
Meanwhile, PSE 10 has no problem opening either type as RAW when I use a source different than Iphoto, for example from the memory card directly out of the cameras.
I feel there must be a simple solution to this, but I'm sure not finding it. Any help appreciated.

They are only preferences that regenerate automatically as soon as you restart the program. The only program where deleting them will cause problems is OS mail.app, if you use that. Never delete prefs there because they hold your mailboxes in recent versions.
Okay, you want to delete the following in addition to the iphoto plists in my previous post:
com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist
Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 paths
Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 settings
All the files are in your username>library>preferences. If you are using 10.7 or 10.8, that library is hidden. To see it, in the Finder, click the Go menu and hold down the Option key. It will appear below the little house for your user account. Also, in 10.7 and 10.8 there is a folder in that library called Saved Application States. Go in there and delete any for PSE and iPhoto.
Repair permissions and try again

Why don't RAW files from iPhoto open in RAW CS5?
I have dragged RAW files into Photoshop from iPhoto and they appear the same as the .jegs. Also, in the dropdown camera info panel, there is no info other than RAW and the file name:( I have a Nikon D5000 camera and am using OSX 10.6.6 All updates that could find have been done. I am not techy savvy so I hope that there is an easy solution. Thanks.

Yes, it is preferable to do as much editing on the raw files as you can including global and local tone & color correction in Camera Raw...but there is a limit to the work you can do and sometimes you must go ahead and render the raw file into Photoshop for additional work. Then you'll be needing layers and other functionality that can't be done on a raw file. At that point you'll need to save as a TIFF or PSD. If you work in 16 bit and a large enough color space, the TIFF or PSDs will still be capable of the highest quality...as others have indicated, the Photoshop .raw file format ain't for photography per se. -
By accident I have some raw-files in iPhoto. I want to open them in PS camera raw. How do i do that?!
Export them back out: File -> Export, and set the Kind to Original

You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots. -
Opening RAW files with iPhoto 06- Nikon D200
Is there any way to open RAW files with iPhoto 06 ? I have a Nikon D200.
I'm puzzled - I cannot even open them in preview - it flashes and then says its unsupported. DOes it matterwhat type of RAW you choose?
I open them fine in Photoshop Elements, would rather load them up in iPhoto for storage though. -
•Canon EOS 5D Mark II Raw Files Won't Open?
I use PE 11 and normally shoot with Nikon cameras. I recently used a friend's Canon #EOS 5D Mark II and the Canon Raw files will not open. I found a Camera Raw plug-in (5.2) that addresses this but am concerned this plug-in will override the camera raw plug-in already installed to read my Nikon files. Is this a valid concern?
Thanks for your response. What I think the problem was had to do with a couple of corrupted files. The jpg versions displayed correctly but the raw files did nothing when they were selected. I deleted 4 files that would not display and then randomly selected another which did. All the remainder of 46 files display in PE. I might have a bad CF card on my hands even though it is new. I’ll send it to Lexar for examination.

Canon D1X Raw Files and IPhoto 6.0.6
I'm unable to load Raw files into IPhoto 6.0.6 from my Canon G1X on a Macbook Pro using OS 10.7.4.
I've resisted upgrading to a later version of IPhoto because of the negative comments about the later versions, and indeed never would as my existing version does all I need - except for this small problem, of course :-)
If anybody can provide a work-around so that I can read these Raw files in 6.0.6, I would be very grateful.

Later versions of iphoto update the Library (to cope with added features and so on) and early versions cannot open the later version. So keep a copy of the library not updated and yes, you can go back.

When I move a RAW file from IPhoto on my macbook pro to desktop or Photoshop it changes to a jpeg and reduces in size. How can I get the Raw file to move across?
I create separate folders based on the year and then the actual date of when I take images. You can make those folders anywhere on any hard drive that is connected to your Mac whether internal or external. I also use the Photoshop Photo Downloader that is included with Photoshop/Bridge and it will create the date folder so all I do is create a Year folder.
Open Bridge or click on the Bridge icon in PS and in the File menu item in Bridge select "Get photos from Camera". It can be a camera connected to your Mac or a memory card from a camera. A window will open and you then select the camera or memory card. Set the location they will be downloaded to, just the folder and you can Browse to a folder that you created, then in the "Create Subfolders drop down select what date stamp you want to use or or custom name or not to create subfolders at all.
I've never cared for iPhoto one bit. I tried it but found it way to restrictive. It likes to have full control over how you interact with your images. -
How do I not import RAW files into iPhoto
I shoot RAW + Jpeg with my cameras... Up until a recent upgrade to Mavericks... I would put the SD card in the iMac and it would import all the JPEGs, and then say something like 75 files could not be downloaded.
Those were the large RAW files and I would then just move them to an External Hard-drive and use Lightroom and Canon's DPP to edit them.
After the OS upgrade the RAW and JPEGs now both import into iPhoto and onto the Mac Hard-drive.
I can't seem to find a way to not import the RAW file into iPhoto. Is there something I am missing? I do not want those large RAW files wasting space on the mac, and I have notice iPhoto is really slow since the upgrade.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
B. iPhoto and Raw
1. The Raw processing engine in iPhoto the same one used in Aperture, but with less fine control. (Think of the differences between Word and TextEdit, iMovie and Final Cut).
2. Processing Raw in a 3rd Party Application
You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop. But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:

Now for the kludge:

hi folks! i have a nikon d80 and currently using iphoto '08 and wanted to use adobe ilustrator cs to edit my photos. i already set iphoto to transfer the photographs as raw but everytime i double click, for some magical reason iphoto converts my raw files to jpeg when it goes to illustrator. so i did my research and found out that i need adobe camera raw(ACR) plug in. i think my camera is not compatible with ACR so i downloaded Adobe DNG converter. now i think i'm in the right track here but now this is like playing chicken and egg.
now i wanted to convert my raw files from iphoto to DNG but there's no way i can access my iphoto pictures without iphoto converting my raw pix to jpeg. any suggestions? i really wanted ti use iphoto to organize my files. i do have some back up plans though. it's either i just use my super slow nikon software or buy adobe photoshop cs2(don't really have the money right now). please help! thanks!Illustrator is not a photo or image editor. It won't work with things like the photo's Exif data and so on. Editing photos in Illustrator makes as much sense as writing your novel in a spreadsheet.
You don't have to go all the way to purchasing cs 2 (though CS 3 is more recent and will run better on 10.5), you can use Photoshop Elements which is really enough. About 85% of the capability for 15% of the price as someone on here mentioned once. And if you find a feature that you actually need that's not in Elements I would be very surprised indeed.
Other alternatives include Acorn, Graphic Coverter both of which are about the half the price of Elements. The GIMP and Seashore are Open Source, as in free.

Krs Benne49What camera are you using? The RAW support is camera specific. Have you installed the latest Digital Camera Raw update 6.01?
If you are already running the latest raw support, try to reinstall:
To reinstall you need to exchange files in the System Library. So be sure to backup your computer before patching the system library.
The RAW support files are installed in the System Library in the folder "/System/Library/CoreServices" Folder:
To open this folder, use the Finder's "Go" menu. Click the smiling Finder icon in the Dock to bring the Finder forward.
Then type the keyboard shortcut ⇧⌘G (for "Finder > Go > Go to folder") and copy and paste "/System/Library/CoreServices" into the text field.
In the Finder window that will open, delete both the files "RawCamera.bundle" and "RawCameraSupport.bundle". You will have to enter your Administrator password.
Download the current RAW support update from Apple's Support Site: Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 6.01
In the Downloads folder you will find the disk image with the installer. Double click it to open and run and the installer.
Then restart your Mac.
If the current support is still causing the problems after reinstalling, try to downgrade to Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.07 -
Canon CR2 Raw files won't open in Photoshop CS4
I'm using a Canon EOS 600D (aka EOS Kiss X5), Photoshop CS4 (ver 11.0.1) with Camera Raw 5.7.0.213.
CR2 Raw files won't open in Photoshop, though the thumbnails are clearly visible and open in Windows Explorer.
Any suggestions?
ThanksYes, absolutely all of the quality and dynamic range is retained in the DNG, because it is still raw data.
Outside of upgrading to Photoshop CS5, which can open your files directly with Camera Raw 6.4.1, your only choice is the extra step of converting the .CR2 files to .DNG with the free DNG converter.
While you'll get all the quality your Camera Raw 5.x converter can deliver, you should keep in mind the Camera Raw 6.x converter has an entirely new, additional "2010 process" for converting raw images, which (depending on your settings) can actually deliver a higher quality conversion than the one you're getting with Photoshop CS4. I think it's worth the cost of the Photoshop upgrade, personally.

After reinstalling CS6 the bridge photo downloader isn't able to read raw files and fails to convert the raw files to DNG. Previously downloaded raw files, now DNG, open up successfully in Camera Raw 7. How do I get the photo downloader to read and convert raw files. MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. No such problem before this reinstallation.
You should install Camera Raw 4.6.

D800 RAW files will not open in Photoshop CS6
I have just installed the CS6 upgrade to Photoshop CS4 Extended, but now the software will not read the RAW files from my D800.
I have followed Adobe's instructions to check that I have the correct RAW plug-in (7.0.0.308) which I have. I have uninstalled the software and reinstalled the software without success. I do not want to convert my RAW files into DNG files, so I have ignored that step.
The 'Open in Photoshop' instruction in Lightroom 4 does not open my D800 RAW files either, although the files can be opened in Lightroom 4 OK.
Any idea what the problem is?Brilliant! ACR 7.1 Beta allows D800 RAW files to be opened within CS6 and it also allows Photoshop 4 to open D800 RAW files in Photoshop CS6.
It says that the Beta version will expire on 30/6/2012 after which it will keep advising on a daily basis although it will still work. Any idea, what happens next? Does Adobe issue a proper ACR 7.1 and distribute it as part of the update service? -

Working with RAW files in iPhoto 5.0.4 and Elements 4.0.1
I take photos in RAW mode and download them to iPhoto. When I try to edit the photo in iPhoto, the picture is a tiny little file that is impossible to enlarge with any sort of clarity. Also, the word "RAW" does not appear anywhere on the iPhoto window like I read it is supposed to.
When I drag the file to Photoshop Elements, I get an editing window that has none of the tools usually associated with JPEG files. I get a separate window in which I can darken or lighten the image, that's it.
Clearly, I'm doing something wrong. No one in their right mind would ever use RAW if this is how it works.

If you're new working with RAW files, your right, it just doesn't make sense. RAW <imho> is a bit overrated. One thing you will need to keep in mind when shooting in RAW, is you will still need to take a well exposed image. What RAW files will allow are CHANGES in all areas of the image v. JPEG which may allow you to ADJUST a few settings in the image. My only suggestion would be to kepp playing around with PSE until you get the hang of it, it is an excellent image editing software. But realize, a well exposed JPEG and RAW file are hard to tell apart...
Personally, I do not directly download RAW files through iPhoto but will create a folder and download to here, and simply drage folder to iPhoto to import (which are then 'converted' into JPEG files). This way I have the original RAW images safely located outside of iPhoto as well as in iPhoto. You should set Elements as your choice of application to edit files inside iPhoto.
