RAW files in Photos with iOS 8

Has anyone found a solution to the way iOS 8 has slowed down the rendering of RAW files in Photos? This used to be one of the main ways in which I used my iPad and on photo shoots it was very impressive. Now I cannot use it to any effect. I've tried rebooting the iPad and closing apps, and while this initially improved it a bit, it is still not smooth as it was before iOS 8.

The documentation for Photos does not explain at all, how RAW files are rendered in Photos.
In iOS 7 it was documented, that RAW files were not rendered at all. iPhoto and Photos simply edited the embedded JPEG from the RAW file. And I strongly suspect, that that is still what happens. Have you changed the settings in your camera to a different RAW compression and are now using a different RAW format than previously?

  • How can I locate the original .CR2 /  Raw file from Photos in finder?

How can I locate the original .CR2 /  RAW file from Photos in the finder window? I would like to know a easier way to open my files and use them in Photoshop than having to go to the Pictures folder, right clicking "show packaged contents", and manually searching for my CR2's / RAW's. It is also ridiculous to have to export the RAW file to my desktop, and then take it into Photoshop or another photo editing program.  I was able to do this in iPhoto and find I cannot do so in Photos. Please help? Can you please consider adding a right click function that says "Show Original file in Finder". That would make it so much easier and better for those of us who want a simple way to access the original files and use them in other editing programs. At least with iPhoto you could go to the top menu / preferences and find your items.

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html is the place for feature requests and feedback
Rather than use the 'Show package Contents route, the supported and safer way is to export the unmodfied original.

  • Open the same raw file in PS5 with two different White Balance settings

I'm trying to open the same Raw File in PS5 with two different White Balance settings.  One setting "as shot" the other in "daylight", then blend them.  The tutorial I'm watching says to "stack" the images.  The tutorial shows one White Balance setting as the "Background" layer and the other setting as "Layer 1".  I don't know how to do this and the tutorial is not specific.  Can anyone either point me to a step by step instruction or offer some assistance?

Also look at the "Snapshots" feature of Camera Raw itself.  It allows you non-destructively to keep multiple sets of settings for a single raw file.
Learning about it far exceeds the scope of what can be done in this particular forum.  I would recommend this book as essential reading:

My fuji x100s has RAW file compatibility issue with OS 10.8.2, my iphoto11 cannot recognise the file format.  Anyone know of this issue too? Appreciate if anyone can offer some helps.  Thanks

Correct.  The Fuji X-100s is not currently supported by iPhoto or Aperture (or the RAW converter in OS X itself).  You can submit feedback via iPhoto and request this.

  • Is there a way to keep images as RAW files when editing with Photo Shop ???

The drawback I find with aperture is that when using photoshop as editor I cannot keep my raw files. They are converted to TIFFS...Is there a way that I can keep them in Raw????? Thanks!!

Your original RAW files are still there in your Aperture library in your pictures folder. Or on an external hard drive if you are referencing them.... They are never touched, you are editing a 'version' of your original RAW file.
When you export to PS Aperture creates a new 'version' of the original and exports that to PS. The file format that it returns to Aperture as, from PS, is controlled by you in Aperture preferences... > Export Tab > External Editor file format....
You can have your pictures in the format you choose. But your original RAW's are untouched.

  • Raw files imported distorted with Lightroom 3

    Hey,
In the last months I started experiencing an issue with Lightroom 3 (is the software that came with my camera) that didn't have at the beginning and AFAIK nothing has changed after I isntalled the lastest version of lightroom 3 and the camera raw plugin.
Recently pretty much every picture I import comes with shifted bands. I know the raw files are ok because other computers load the file correctly. You can see in the car wheel the kind of shifting I am suffering.
Exporting the file to a different format will save the file with the distortion, so it is not just visual.
In all honesty, I don't know how to tackle this, I tried to install any possible updates for camera raw which didn't work and I fear that reinstalling the software might not work or just do temporally till it breaks again. Any tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

When you compare the files on other computers and they are ok, are you reading them onto the second computer from the camera memory card in a card-reader or USB-cable attached to the camera, or from some other step further along in the transfer process, such as from one computer’s hard-drive to another?
Anything that happens after the last shared step is suspect.
If you are reading them from the memory card again and they are ok on the second computer, then what happens if you copy the photos, again, onto the first computer?  Do the same ones have the same faults in the same locations or are the faults different?  If the latter, then something in the transfer process (USB drivers/cable) or the computer, itself (memory, hard-drive), is bad.
If you remove and re-import the files do they still have the same faults in the same locations?  If you purge your camera-raw cache and re-develop do the same faults show up?  If not then perhaps wherever your raw cache is, is corrupted.
If you want you can try posting one of the files that has been imported into LR and is bad, here, and others can try it on their systems, to make sure the data in the file is bad.
By “posting one of the files” I mean upload it to a large-file-hosting service like www.dropbox.com and then post the public download link, here.

  • How do I convert multiple RAW files to JPEG with the same settings?

I have a considerable number (800) RAW files to convert to JPEGs. I am happy to convert them in batches requiring similar settings to save time whilst of course, leaving the original RAW files to make more individual adjustments if required later.
I thought there was a way of doing this in small batches to save time but can't recall how to do it.
    Can anyone help?

    Many thanks Barbara and dj_paige.
What I didn't mention is that I'm using PSE 5 with ACR 4.6, if its relevant.  I'm thinking of updating to the next version when its out in the hope that it will run with Windows 7 64 bit or I may go to Lightroom.
I can now see that I can batch convert a whole folder of files using "process multiple files" as dj_paige suggested but that is too many at once as the settings I choose won't be relevant for all the pics in the folder.
I was hoping to batch convert say 5 or 6 similar photos at a time with the same settings. I'm not quite clear what you're suggesting but I'm hoping that its a "work round" using two stages to achieve this.
I can't see a list of open files within ACR to ensure that they are all selected as you suggest.
What does clicking Open rather than Done mean?  Does this amend the original RAW file to the settings selected so that if I then "process multiple files" on the whole folder to convert from RAW to JPEG they will in fact have already been processed in smaller groups so I can convert without applying any further changes?
If so, what settings should I apply to "process multiple files" to ensure a simple conversion of file type rather than any further adjustments?
Any further help on this would be much appreciated.
    Andrew

  • RAW files look corrupted with color streaking during import

During import in Lightroom about 25% of my files look corrupted (with color streaks, etc.). The RAW images upload perfectly in iPhoto on the same computer but for some reason will become corrupted in Lightroom. I am able to delete the corrupted images in the LR Library and reload them with about a 50% success rate. I've tried different memory cards, cf importers, etc. Only an issue in LR. Sometimes they export with the streaking and other times they export perfectly fine. Even if they export fine it makes it impossible to edit in LR. Below is an example of how the image appears. Any answers?

Raw files have a camera-embedded JPG.
I would guess the files are corrupt, LR is showing you this corruption, while other programs are only interpreting the JPG and hiding the corruption.
Can you upload one of these photos that iPhoto shows as ok, while LR shows corruption?  Upload one to www.dropbox.com <http://www.dropbox.com>  and post a public download link, here.

Previously when using iphoto when exporting images I was given the option of exporting the orrigional RAW image as well as the edited now jpg.

When I import into Photos from my SD card I can only view and edit the JPG files though the RAW are still present.

How can I get iPhoto back? It says it is no longer available in the UK and all the updates online have been discontinued.
The update just removed the iPhoto icon from the Dock. iPhoto should still be in your Applications folder, if you did not uninstall it intentionally.
If your iPhoto version is iPhoto 9.6.1, just drag iPhoto from the Applications folder back to the Dock, then click it to launch it.
You will see a prompt, that the iPhoto Library has been migrated, but just click the "Open iPhoto" button and iPhoto will open the old library.
If you not yet have 9.6.1, update as described here:
Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities
The main idea is to move the iPhoto app to the Trash, so Spotlight does not see it as installed, reload the AppStore, and then to try to download again from the App Store - from your Purchases tab, not from the main page, since you can neither buy iPhoto nor update it, but you can reinstall, if your AppleID is associated with it.

  • Raw file rendering problems with Canon EOS 5D in Aperture 3

Since upgrading to Aperture 3, I have had serious problems with the rendering of Canon EOS 5D (not Mark II/III) RAW files. With Aperture 2, both the preview and full-sized images looked basically the same as the original images as displayed on the camera's display, without any adjustments.
With Aperture 3, each preview images initially look fine after import, but when Aperture re-renders it from the RAW file (e.g. when displaying the full-size image), the colors are drastically intensified, and the hue is shifted generally towards green/blue. I've checked the RAW Fine Tuning, and it is set to the defaults. If I turn the default RAW Fine Tuning settings all the way down, the image is still not at all like the preview from the camera - it becomes much darker and stays too blue/green, with washed-out colors.
A friend with a Canon EOS 5D MkII also recently upgraded her Mac from Aperture 2 to 3, and hasn't experienced any problems. We've tried importing RAW files from my (non-MkII) camera to her Mac (with the default RAW Fine Tuning settings), and get the same results as with my own Mac (i.e. strange colors), so the problem seems to be related to the camera model.
I've also noticed that scanned greyscale tiff images (including images that were originally imported under Aperture 2) are changed when first displayed by Aperture 3 - they become darker and more contrasty, with lots of information lost in the shadow areas.
I've also tried removing Aperture preferences, Aperture itself, and re-installing from download, with no change in the problem. (Aperture is the current latest version, 3.3.2.)
    Has anyone experienced similar problems?

    I'm having the same problem.
iMac running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 and Aperture 3.3.2.  Workflow is importing through Canon's DPP and then using referenced images in Aperture.  The images look great in LR4, or Canon's DPP but are flat and dingy in Aperture.
There's a free preset that goes part way to fixing it at http://theapertureblog.com/2011/02/10/my-aperture-workflow-for-working-with-cano n-5d-mark-ii-files/
but as good as this fix is, it doesn't quite do the trick. [not being a hater, and not saying I can do better]
    I just got back from shoooting 1,500 images with a 5DMii and a T2i using Canon 24-105L IS, 70-200 2.8L, 50 1.8 and a Sigma 120-400 and the T2i images are not just better, they're in a different league.
I've tried shooting in Faithful, Neutral and also toggling these presets in different ways and still can't get Aperture to match what I see on the camera's screen or in other Apps.  I love the interface and DB of Aperture, but what's the point of using it if it doesn't produce and awesome image in the end?

Airplay and file sharing missing on iPad 2 after installing IOS 6.

iOS printing to a non-AirPrint printer is not supported. There's more information here: AirPrint 101
If you had iOS printing working through yout OS X Server then you must have had another piece of software running in the server emulating AirPrint. That software isn't compatible with iOS 6.

  • LR5.2 Destroys raw-files if working with network drives

I have a serious bug with LR5.2: It destroys my raw files CR2 (Canon ESO 60d) if I work with my local network drive. All my pictures are stored on this network drive. If I try to import from sd card or local drive new pictures and copy/move them via import or synchornize to my network drive the files are corrupted. I also can't open them with other sw-programms like DPP from Canon. The original files on the sd card are okay. Even if I copy the files via explorer to the network drive I can open them with for ex. DPP, but after I imported them into LR5.2 the files are corrupted and I can't open them with DPP again.

    LeeScoresby wrote:

Lr doesn't write CR2 files, except if moving/copying, and then only via call to operating system. If your raw files are going bad, you probably have a system/hardware problem.
