Raw Files in PSE7

I'm new to PSE7 and new to Raw Files.  I've taken a bunch of photos in RAW and was hoping to import them into the Organize area.  However, it seems PSE7 doesn't recognize the files.  Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.  The files are Canon Raw if that makes any difference.
Thanks, Bill

"..I saw one link that showed, if I read it correctly, that the 50D is supported in the prior version. and the new version includes only two newer Canon cameras..."
The new version adds two new Canon cameras. This new version of ACR includes all previous cameras supported by earlier versions of ACR. You should have the latest version of ACR that your version of Photoshop/Photoshop Elements supports; I use ACR 5.4 in my Photoshop Elements 7 even though I can open my 450D RAW .CR2  files in ACR 4.6, which I need to do if I open my 450D .CR2 files in Elements 5. That only supports ACR 4.6.
"..I have are are xxx.CR2.."
The extension .CR2 just indicates that the file is a Canon RAW file not a specific Canon camera. Every Canon that supports RAW exports a .CR2 file e.g my 450D and your 50D both have the same file extension but the underlying files are different.

    No, that's not the solution.
PSE needs Adobe Camera Raw to work with RAW files. You probably have to download and install http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4626 than the one installed with PSE7. Please follow the installation instructions exactly.

  • Can't open Canon 500D raw file in PSE7

Since moving to a new laptop running Win7 Pro 64 bitI cannot open raw files created by my Canon 500D
camera. Is there something besides PSE7 that I need to install? I believe this worked under XP Pro SP3. Thanks

In the Editor click Help >About Plug-in >Camera Raw
Make sure you have version 5.4 or higher.
If that’s OK check your display resolution by going to Control Panel >Appearance
Sometimes the camera raw plug-in does not display fully (or properly) if the screen height is set to less than 800. This usually affects netbooks more than laptops.

Here is the compatibility for ACR versions with Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. I read it in read me file :
The Camera Raw 6.1 plug-in is not compatible with versions of Photoshop earlier than Photoshop CS5 or versions of Photoshop Elements earlier than Photoshop Elements 8.0 for Windows and Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac.

  • Updated Camera list for converting Raw files in PSE7

I am looking to instal an updated CameraRaw.8bi file to accomodate recent cameras.
Camera updated needed for Canon powershot G15.
    Regards Daz.

Photoshop Elements 7 supports Adobe Camera Raw from version 4.5 to 5.6 only.
Please refer following document for you reference:
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
Canon Powershot G15 starts supported from Adobe Camera Raw version 7.3.
Hereby, raw files from particular camera is not supported in Photoshop Elements 7.0.
However, you can use DNG converter to convert Raw files into DNG and import in CS4 aaplication.
The Digital Negative (DNG) format is Adobe’s proposed standard format for camera raw files. DNG files are useful for archiving camera raw images because they contain the raw camera sensor data and data specifying how the image should look. Camera raw image settings can be stored in DNG files instead of in sidecar XMP files or the camera raw database.
You can download the latest DNG convert from following place:

  • PSE 9: Cannot open certain raw files in editor from Organizer.  Can directly tho.

I can open my CR2 (Canon raw for 50D) files from the Elements 9 Editor.   But when I try to save, the "Save as Version Set" is grayed out even tho the photo is in the Organizer.  Conversely, when I try to open a CR2 file from the Organizer, I cannot.  If I drag it to the Editor window, I get message that the file is the wrong type of file - the message one would expect for an unsupported raw file format.
I've been using Elements 9 successfully since October.  This is new behavior in the last week (since I returned from 3 week vacation with 3000 new photos).   I cannot pin this to any newly loaded software (don't have any) nor correlate it to any other event.  Occasionally, the file will open in Camera Raw from the Organizer, but not usually, and then not again for awhile.  I've repaired and compacted.  I uninstalled and reinstalled to no effect.  I applied the 9.0.3 update - again to no effect.  I've rebooted a few times, again with no effect.  I did have PSE7 installed (and have had so for 2 years), but uninstalled that, hoping (vainly) for an effect.
In the process of proofing this post, I did a bit more experimenting.  I find that ALL my 20D Canon Raw files work as they should (open in Camera Raw, etc.).  And, I find that all my 50D Canon Raw files taken before the trip work as they should.  However, the files from ONE DAY ONLY on the trip exhibit this behavior. The only difference is the trip files all were off-loaded to a laptop, then transferred to my desktop (via ethernet, not wireless), the same as all other day's photos.   Subsequent loading directly from compact flash card to my desktop results in being able to edit the files from the Organizer just fine.  I've checked permissions and all users have full permissions.
The laptop and desktop are both Windows 7 (completely current).
I don't really have any ideas.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

I think PSE6 will not be able to import/open files from Nikon D7000 as support has been added in recent ACR updates which are not available for PSE8 and below.

  • PSE8 - I can't save RAW files as JPG

I have just started using Elements 8.
After opening and editing my Raw files (from Nikon cameras NEF and Olympus cameras ORF) there is no option to save them as JPG files. The format options which are available are - PSD, PSE, PDF, P.RAW, PNG, and TIFF.
If I open a JPG file and edit it there is the option to save it as JPG.
    What am I doing wrong?

You need to convert the image to 8bits first, before saving. This can be done in the Raw editor, or in the PSE Editor. In PSE7, the command was Image>Mode> 8/bits

  • Raw Files show Broken Box Symbol in PSE 6

I was on here over a year ago and employed a work around for the broken box symbol that I get on some of my Raw files in PSE6.  Lately the work around is not working.  The question that I have is did Adobe fix the problem in PSE7 or PSE8 rather than some of the users helping each other out with the work arounds?  I would purchase 7 or 8 just to be rid of this annoying bug.......Rob

Before you spend the money on the upgrade to 7 or 8, you might try the following:
    1. Delete the thumbnail cache file "thumb.5.cache" as described here:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Recreate_Organizer_thum bnails
    2. Try solution 2 of the tech note:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403728.html
If this works, then go back and try solution 3 one more time.
If you do decide to upgrade, I suggest waiting a couple of weeks if you can before deciding on 7 versus 8 -- the initial feedback on 8 isn't looking very good.

  • Opening tif files in PSE7

I am using the trial version of PSE7 on Windows XP Home. When saving Nikon RAW files (NEF) to TIF from the PSE editor, I can subsequently re-open the TIF file without a problem. When exporting NEF files from the organizer to TIF files, I can NOT re-open these TIF files afterward. I get a message "Cannot open filename.tif because it is the wrong type of file." I do not believe the problem to be related to the source NEF file, because I tried both approaches with the same file.
Anybody have any idea waht I could be wrong? Me or the program?

    Ludo,
It may be that you need to update the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) plug-in:
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=327437
If you have a new camera that is not understood by the version of ACR you have, then you could get that error message. What camera model produced the NEF?
Heres what I think may be happening: When you export a .NEF from the Organizer, PSE records metadata in the TIFF concerning ACR. When you then open that exported TIFF in the Editor, it sees the metadata and opens it in the ACR plug-in. If there is a camera model in the metadata that ACR doesnt recognize, it could instead produce this error message.
On the other hand, when you use the Editors Save As to save a .NEF as a TIFF, that metadata doesnt get recorded. So when you open that TIFF in the Editor, it doesnt try to open it with the ACR plug-in.
To help others, here, please let us know one way or the other whether this addresses your problem.

  • Elements 7 does not recognise RAW files from my new camera

Have recently bought a new camera (Canon EOS 60d), which is an import.  Whilst I can process Jpegs in Elements the RAW files are not recognised.  Help

PSE7 is three years old, and camera makers are constantly changing the formats of the RAW images they use.  There's no way for PSE7 to open those new RAW files, beause the latest version of Adobe Camera RAW is incompatible.
You'll have to use the Adobe DNG converter to convert the RAW files and then open the DNG files in PSE:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5375
    Or you can purchase PSE10.

  • PSE 8 and CS4 Editing Raw Files & Version Sets

I currently have PSE7 and CS4.  While I use Bridge for the initial download and review I like the organizer in PSE better.  PSE7 has problems interfacing with CS4.  Raw files open directly instead of opening in camera raw in CS4.  Version sets don't work either; the updated files is deleted by PSE.  My question is whether anyone knows if these issues have been addressed in PSE8.  I tried to ask Adobe but all I got is that they tried to work on these issues.

It appears that the PSE 8 displays the same characteristics when editing RAW files. The link between CS4 and PSE Organizer shows the same problem, for editing JPEG images also. The edited version does not get saved and yet is added to the Catalog.

  • I am unable to open raw files from my Canon T1i in Adobe Camera Raw of my version CS3 of Photoshop.  I have tried to update my ACR by downloading version 4.6 from the Adobe website but I am still unable to open raw files, just JPEG.  Is there a way to use

I am unable to open raw files taken on my Canon Rebel T1i in my version of Photoshop CS3.  When I import raw files into Bridge they come up as patches with CR2 on them and when clicked on, a notice comes up stating that Photoshop does not recognize these files.  I tried to update my Adobe Camera Raw by downloading version 4.6 from the Adobe Website, but when I clicked on the plus-in, I got another message that Photoshop does not recognize this file.  I spoke with a representative from Canon who said that I could not update CS3 and that I should subscribe to the Cloud.  I would prefer to use my CS3, if possible.  Can anyone advise me what to do?

The T1i was first supported by Camera Raw 5.4 which is only compatible with CS4 and later

    Some options:
    Upgrade to CS6

Download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all T1i Raw files to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS3

  • How can I process a linearly converted raw file while preserving color?

    Hi,
I want to convert my raw files in a linear format (to preserve all the dynamic range and detail and prevent unnecessary clipping). My question is "how can I modify the brightness or luminance while preserving the hue and saturation of every color?"
As for applying the gamma curve, I guess the best and only way in Photoshop is to create a Levels adjustment and place a 2.2 in the middle (gray) input box. However, I read in http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/hybrid-conversion.shtml that a 4.75 value should be used... Why? Is the number placed there not correspond to the gamma being applied?
    Thanks in advance.
    Juan Dent
P.S.: getting colorimetrically accurate color from the camera, through all the manipulations in Photoshop is for me crucial. Any pointers as to what to do and what to avoid?

First of all, you should have used the Adobe DNG Converter 8.6, not an old, obsolete version.  Always use the very latest version.  8.3 was simply the first ACR version to support your camera model, that's all.
Note that the DNG Converter works only on folders, not on individual raw files.  Put all your Sony raw files in a folder and run the Converter on that folder containing the raw files.
I have absolutely no clue as to what on Earth you mean by : "upon reading the memory chip from Photoshop CS5".
You also need to make sure that CS5 is fully updated.  You cannot rely on the highly and notoriously unreliable Adobe auto updater to tell whether you have the latest update installed or not.
I still have no idea what platform you are on, Mac or Windows. Please read the following for next time:
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them, etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster).
A screen shot could be very helpful too.

  • Is there a way to edit raw files from the Canon 5DMkIII in Lightroom 2?

I rented a Canon 5DMkIII this past weekend and shot in RAW. I'm running Lightroom 2.7 on my laptop because I have a pre-Intel dual-G5 tower at home and can't run LR3 or LR4 on a pre-Intel chip machine and I tend to share my libraries across my laptop to my tower and back (so I need to be able to open the LR files on both machines, which is why I'm still using LR2 ... I know, I know, I need to upgrade but that's going to be a hefty investment!)... In the meantime, I'm wondering if there's a way to view/edit the raw files in Lightroom? They won't even import (I get the message upon import attempt: "Some import operations were not performed. (97)")... I know the information is there, though, because I used PhotoMechanic to do the initial sort of my images that I wanted to keep/edit. I see there's ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) 6.7 (I think it is) that supports the 5DMkIII, but I'd prefer to edit across the board in Lightroom, it's so much faster. Is there something I can download to still edit my raw files in LR2? Or, do I have to buy the update and get LR4 if I want to edit my 5DMkIII RAW files? Thanks in advance for your help!!

Support for the canon 5d Mk111 was introduced in LR 4, ACR 6.7 so you will have to use the Adobe DNG Converter 6.7 or later to convert the raw files to dng format before you can import and work with the files in LR 2. The converter is a free download from Adobe and is available at this link.
