Raw files, iPhoto, PSE9

I have just read several previous threads on this subject, and it isn't working. The problem is thus:
When you activate the external editor in iPhoto, iPhoto automatically creates a duplicate file. The original resides in a subfolder of the iPhoto-->Masters folder, the new file resides in a subfolder of the iPhoto-->Previews folder. You can see this by going to File-->Reveal In Finder in iPhoto. It is the duplicate file that actually opens in the editor. This preserves the original.
When you open a Raw image, it opens in Adobe Photo Raw. The editing process is wonderful. The problem is the save. It is not the standard Mac Save window. No matter what I do, it saves with a version number. It makes a mess of the iPhoto filing system, and iPhoto doesn't recognize the version numbered changed file.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Paul

Hi Paul,
Does it create a new edited file even when you make changes to the raw images in ACR dialog and click Done?
If ACR dialog itself suffices all your editing, then you may get rid of these new edited files. Else whenever Editor or Organizer works on raw files, they tend to create new file.
Thanks

  • Workflow with RAW files iPhoto iOS

I shoot in Nikon RAW (.nef) and want to use my camera connection kit and new iPad to do a first pass on editing/deleting photos before I pass them to my Mac. I tried shooting a few photos in raw and then edited them but when I sent them via the "Send to iTunes" feature in iOS iPhoto they only sent a small JPG version of the photo. What I like to happen is the RAW file sent with editted embeded JPG. What process/workflow should I take so I don't get a bunch of duplicates (RAW + JPG) files?
Any best practice appreciated. I find that using iPhoto iOS is a more intuitive approach to first pass editing/deleting sort of like a cutting board.
    Thanks.

iPhoto for iOS does not edit RAW files. When it encounters a RAW file iPhoto for iOS works only with the embedded jpg. If you only shoot RAW the embedded jog is a very small file.
My suggestion is to keep your photos on your camera's card. You an copy them to you iPad for a look see and decide which you might not want to keep but I'd do all my editing on the Mac side for those RAW files.

  • Working with RAW files in PSE9:  Doable or better to use PSE12?

I have PSE 9 and will soon get a camera with RAW capability.  I notice that Adobe no longer supports PSE 9.  Am I in for trouble if I don't upgrade to PSE 12 since I don't know how to work with RAW files?  It sounds as if I will need something to convert RAW files?  Where do I get it?  Is it a big deal for a beginner with no software skills?

You can download a free DNG Converter from Adobe and then convert your RAWs to DNGs which can be used in PSE9.
You don't need PSE12, but if you want to purchase PSE 12, you get the most current features in the Raw processor (which in my opinion is a huge improvement over what is available in PSE9), and you don't need the extra step of converting to DNG.

  • How to open Canon 70D Raw files in PSE9? [was:Raw upgrade]

Can someone help?  I have just bought a Canon 70D but my copy of Photoshop Elements 9 won't read the raw files.  It was OK with the raw files from my 450D.  I have tried downloading the upgrade to raw 6.5 (although I'm not sure that is what will solve it) but when I try to do so Internet explorer can't cope and my computer flashes on and off until I have to hard boot.  I would like to just submit this question to Adobe but I can't find a way to do so! (I have tried)
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

The EOS 70D was first supported by Camera Raw 8.2 (current version).
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
PSE9 is only compatible with Camera Raw up to version 6.5 - so PSE9 won't open your Raw files
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
So you either need to upgrade to PSE12 (to open and edit the Raw 70D files in PSE)
or convert your Raw files to DNGs using Adobe's free DNG converter then edit the DNG files in PSE9.

  • Raw files - iPhoto and Photoshop Elements

I am shooting raw files on a Canon 400D. They upload into iPhoto 6.0.6 ok but I can't open them in PE4.0.1 for editing. I can drag the .CR2 file onto the desktop but PE doesn't recognise it. Am I missing something or am I going about this the wrong way? So far as I can see, iPhoto and PE should both recognise .CR2 files.
    Thank you for any help,
    Geoff.

Also, you will need a more up to date version of ACR than the one that shipped with PE 4. Go to adobe's site and download the next-to-latest version of ACR (some problems with ACR 4.4 so I'd hold off on that and get 4.3.1):

  • How to open Nikon D800E Raw files in PSE9? [was:Gad, what next?]

I'm not a beginner, but after installing and upgrading Photoshop Elements 9, I find it cannot recognize RAW files from Nikon D800E. Either don't load, or load just noise, no picture. Suggestions -- I hope?

Moved from Photoshop for Beginners forum to Photoshop Elements forum
The D800E was first supported in Camera Raw 6.7
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
which is only compatible with PSE10 or later
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
You can either upgrade to PSE12 to open and read Raw files in PSE
or download the free DNG converter, convert all D800E Raw files to DNGs then open and edit the DNGs in PSE9

  • Help opening raw files in pse9 from nikon D7000.

I have a new nikon D7000, and previously used pse6.  When I uploaded camera raw files I could not open to edit in pse6.  I was told to get latest version of pse.  I downloaded trial of pse9, did all raw upgrades but still cannot open files to edit.  I was told by Nikon to check with adobe, but find this website very difficult to find my answer.  I am hoping someone out there that is much smarter than me has had a similar experience and can advise me.

I think PSE6 will not be able to import/open files from Nikon D7000 as support has been added in recent ACR updates which are not available for PSE8 and below.

  • Editing RAW files in PSE9 vs LR3.4?

I know Lightroom is famous for not actually modifying the contents of RAW files while you edit them (non-destructive editing). Can anyone tell me if PSE9 does or does not change the contents of RAW files?
When I open a RAW file in either piece of software both open the file with Adobe Camera Raw, so I assume they are the same up until that point, but what happens once I start applying changes in PSE9 after that?
I do notice that any changes I make to a file in ACR on the way to PSE9 are preserved the next time I open that same RAW file in ACR, but I don't know if that is a permanent change, or a change reflected by information stored in the associated XMP file.
    Thanks for the help.

Adobe Camera Raw using PSE9 does not change the contents of RAW files.

Once you leave Adobe Camera Raw, and enter the PSE Editor (by clicking on DONE), then you have to save the PSE Editor edits by saving your photo as PSD TIF or JPG (in other words, a whole new file is created when you save the photo), and so your original RAW remains unchanged.
I do notice that any changes I make to a file in ACR on the way to PSE9 are preserved the next time I open that same RAW file in ACR, but I don't know if that is a permanent change, or a change reflected by information stored in the associated XMP file.
Your ACR changes are not "a permanent change" (you can always undo your ACR changes). The XMP file is where PSE/ACR stores your edits to your RAW.
Basically, there is no difference in how PSE/ACR and Lightroom handle your original RAW photos.

  • RAW files, iPhoto and PS CS2

    hi
i use iphoto and a raw workspace in photoshop to import and edit digital images taken with a nikon digital camera. i notice now that whenever i double-click on one of the raw file thumbnails in the library, it opens in photoshop as a very large 72ppi jpeg, instead of a raw file. "get info" shows it is a raw file, if i switch image editors, and edit the image in iphoto, it opens as a raw file. if i import the image from the camera to a folder on my desktop and double click on it in my finder, it opens just fine in photoshop in the raw workspace.
raw digital files that were not recently imported into iphoto open just fine ( in cs2 ) it is only files that i newly import. it doesn't matter if the raw-images were imported from a card reader, directly from the camera, or drag/dropped from a folder on my desktop once put it into the iphoto image library, cs2 isn't told by iphoto that it are raw .... is this a problem with the update from v5.0.3 to v5.0.4 ?
is there anything that can fix this problem ?
    g4 powerpc   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

iPhoto is a consumer-level application, and RAW is a format mostly for professionals. When you import a RAW file into iPhoto it saves the RAW in the Originals folder and instantly creates a jpeg version of it in the Modified folder. It is this Modified jpeg that is being opened in Photoshop. There is no way to override this behavior.
My suggestion for your RAW workflow is to use Image Capture (in your Applications folder) to upload from your camera (to a folder anywhere outside of your iPhoto library folder). Edit in Photoshop. Last, import into iPhoto. Once inside iPhoto, the desktop copies can be deleted. You can set Image Capture to open when you connect a camera in Image Capture Preferences. It's not elegant, but I haven't seen any better solutions here.

  • Jpg vs raw file size PSE9/Camera raw 6.3

It seems that there is quite a difference in jpg file sizes between converting jpg's Process multiple files (batch) or Save as (single photo).
I'm converting Sony A580 arw files that are about 16xxxxKB each, when doing batch processing file sizes for jpg are larger than raw about 19xxxKB (setting jpg max quality) but when saving same photos Save as setting max quality 12 file sizes are about 14xxxKB.
Has anyone noticed same behavior when using Camera raw 6.3 and PSE9  ?
    Edit:
Ooops, I had Auto sharpen selected when I did batch processing.

None of this is unusual, and I wouldn't worry about it at all.
I would advise against saving quality 12, it gives you very large files but rarely if ever does it result in a noticeable quality improvement over level 9 or 10, which are smaller.
If you want to read more about this, here is an excellent article written about Lightroom, but the concepts are the same (PSE uses a 0 to 12 scale, while Lightroom uses a 0 to 100 scale, but other than that, everything is the same for PSE). http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/jpeg-quality

  • Unable to Open Canon 60D RAW files in PSE9

Since I got my new camera Canon 60D, I have not been able to open the RAW (CR2) files in my Photoshop Elements 9.  The ones from my previous camera I could. I have installed the Solutions software that came with the camera and have gone to both the Canon and Adobe sites to see if there is something I am missing. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Can you check which version of Camera Raw is installed - it needs to be version 6.2 or later for the 60D
Open Full edit on the menu bar click:
    Help >> About Plug-In >> Camera Raw
Press Esc to close the pop-up.

  • When will iphoto accept Canon 40D raw files?

When will iphoto accept Canon 40D raw files? I have a new camera and would love to use the raw files in iphoto. No luck so far. Aperature seems to lack the abilty to open them also. Anyone here as to when iphoto will be updated?

    Hi again.
No, I don't use aperture, I tried the demo and liked it, but I'd previously bought the commercial version of Pixmantec RawShooter converter for my 10D - Pixmantec were 'bought out' by Adobe, and Adobe generously offered all RawShooter purchasers a free licence for Lightroom, which I also like a lot (though haven't fully got to grips with), so can't currently justify Aperture too.
The one thing I'd say about Aperture is that the colour management for some reason just nailed the colours when printing using canned profiles, in a way other apps hadn't on Windows (including QImage). I was particularly impressed by this using an old Epson 1290S A3+ printer which always tended to produce prints with a colour cast.
iPhoto seems to handle RAW conversions very well and simply, although it's not as refined as the high end apps. This together with organising features are probably what make you find it so easy. Remember though that when you display/tweak RAW files, iPhoto will be creating a file to store these changes as the RAWs do not get directly manipulated. As all this is done behind the scenes again this probably makes it seem easy.
If you don't have Aperture or Lightroom, both were available for 30 day demo last time I checked.

  • Is it possible to get RAW files to be the primary version used?

I've been shooting RAW with my Nikon D7000 and using iPhoto '09 8.1.2, OSX 10.6.8 as a cataloging/minor editing software.  I'm considering buying Aperture but before I do so I'd like to know if it's possible to avoid an annoying thing about iPhoto.  When I import the RAW files iPhoto automatically generates a jpeg version and brings that up for me to see in the library display.  If I'm just doing some minor tweaks to a photo (exposure, cropping, etc) it's a pain for me to have to find the file, open it in Bridge, Camera Raw and then Ps just to do a few minor adjustments.
Here's my ideal situation/workflow.  Please tell me if possible in Aperture (and what idiotic mistakes I'm overlooking):
    1. Import my RAW files to computer using Aperture.
    2. Have those RAW versions show up in my Aperture window.  I don't want to be looking at a jpeg version that Aperture (or my camera) generated.
    3. Adjust, edit, etc.
    Many thanks!

Yes Aperture always displays the version of the original unless you specifically ask for it to show you the original (pressing the M key while in Viewer mode switches to the original)
When you import a file into Aperture, Aperture immediately makes a version of it, version 0 if you will. As you add adjustments these are applied to this version. If you quit Aperture and restart this is what you will see.
You can make new  versions off of this version or off of the original at any time and there is no problem having multiple versions of the same original.
Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - you should have a look at the on-line manual http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/ it is very well done and will answer most of your questions.

i cannot open nikon raw files from my 3200 in elements 8

You would need PSE11 since the 3200 requires ACR version 7.1
Only PSE11 can have 7.1, so to be able to use your raw files with PSE9 you should download the free Adobe DNGconverter which can batch convert a whole folder of raw files into the Adobe raw DNG format which your PSE8 can open.

  • RAW file Sony RX100 Elements 9

Using Photoshop Elements 9, I installed the camera RAW plug-in 6.5.0.216 to be able to open the RAW pictures from my new Sony RX100. This camera is said to be supported, but Elements can not open it: wrong file-type, it says! The camera RAW plug-in + right version is in the listing of plug-ins, extension *.ARW is mentioned for the file-types to choose from when trying to open a file, but a window appears, telling me ARW can't be opened: wrong file-type.
Already started the computer cold, re-installed the plug-in, but no opening of the Sony ARW camera RAW file.
Does anybody know what to do? Thanks

You need ACR version 7.2 for the RX100:
