Raw files (.nef) appear as generic icons - unable to view content

I have followed the instructions from the Adobe article "Raw files appear as generic icons?" posted at the Bridge forum start page, but my raw fils (.nef) are still appearing as generic icons.
I am using Bridge CS4 that came with PSE 8, Snow Leopard (10.6.2).
According to the article solution/point 3, if the currently installed version of the Camera Raw plug-in is earlier than 5.6 (as displayed in the title bar of the Camera Raw Preferences dialog (which is opened in Bridge CS4)), then proceed to download the 5.6 plug-in and follow the instructions to upgrade it.
My version displayed in the Camera Raw Preferences dialog is 5.0.0.178, so I proceeded to download the 5.6 plug-in and followed the instructions, but after that, the Camera Raw Preference dialog that I opened from Bridge CS4 still says version 5.0.0.178, and my raw files still appear as generic icons.
I do notice that the Camera Raw opened in PSE 8 has been upgraded to 5.6 (from 5.5) after that, but the Camera Raw Preference dialog still says 5.0.0.178).
Help in how I can view my raw (.nef) files in Bridge CS4 would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Thanks for your prmpt input Omke.

Yes, I replace the old camera raw plug-in at the root level (Macintosh HD), and I checked that there is only 1 Camera raw plug-in in:
Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 8/Plug-Ins/FileFormats
after following the instructions.
Also check if you downloaded the verson for PSE and not for PS itself.
Reread the instructions carefully and also try to purge cache for folder
using the tools menu / cache / purge cache for folder.
Yes, I did download the version for PSE, not PS. I've also tried purge cache for folder by following your instructions, with no success.
Another thing I discovered is that when I open the Camera raw preference dialogue from PSE 8 (after clicking on a raw (.nef) file), the version number on the title bar is 5.6.0.148, but when I open the Camera raw preference dialog from Bridge CS4, it remains as 5.0.0.178, so maybe that has something to do with whey I can't view my raw (.nef) files from Bridge (and have no problems with PSE 8)?
Any further insights would be appreciated!

proceeded to download the 5.6 plug-in and followed the instructions, but after

    What can I do ?

    Hi Yammer.
First thanks a lot for taking your time to help me. I am really happy about it!
    I will try to answer:
    1)
I meant by having the Camera Raw.8bi placed in BOTH "C:\Programmer\Adobe\Adobe Bridge CS5\Plug-Ins" and in C:\Programmer\Fælles filer\Adobe Plug-Ins\CS5\File Formats" the ACR will be found in two versions - or rather in two places (I know the former shouldn't be, but it solved my preview problem).
    2)
YES - I do have tried twice starting the Adobe Bridge holding down the Ctrl-key and ticking the two (the third was greyed out but ticked anyway) and with no help.
    3)
I have tried to do the *.8bi search you suggested, and this gives me the following dump - absolutely with a few more entries than yours. Some are like doubled.

Our Nikon D4s raw files appear as generic icons when viewed in Bridge 6. I have downloaded Camera Raw version 8.7.1, which lists the Nikon D4s as supported

when I open a raw file (NEF Nikon 7100)  and apply setting then click save, I get an error ( could not complete your request because of a program error ). Ideas?

    Oh, dear.
If you use PSE as your external editor for iphoto, you need to save the images back to iphoto by using Save, not Save As and not changing anything like the name or format that would bring up the Save As window. (You may need to adjust the editor prefs>saving files>on first save to save over existing.)
OR you can export the photos from iphoto to the desktop, use file>open in the editor and then change whatever you want and either import the saved image to the organizer or import it back to iphoto as a new file. What you are doing is extremely risky, particularly to the iphoto library which you may easily damage by your workflow.
I would start the organizer holding down the shift key, then create a new catalog and switch to the new one. Then try opening the editor without opening an image and see if you get any farther.
PSE and iphoto are not designed to be used as you've been doing. You are trying to write to the iphoto library from outside iphoto, which is the fastest known way to corrupt the library and lose all your photos.

This is the last paragraph from my very first response to you, post #1 in this thread:
…Additionally, you need to install the DNG Converter, not just "download" it, and you need to launch it and run it on each folder of NEFs you wish to convert to raw DNGs.  [emphasis added]

Yes it is possible, depending on your camera and version of PSE

I am not exactly sure what you mean by "authorised", but I am experiencing a similar problem...or the same, in that Apple TV keeps telling me to enable home sharing in my MacBook Pro. It does not seem to recognize that home sharing is already enabled on my Laptop.
Is home sharing and "authorised" one in the same? It used to work just fine before these recent Apple TV updates.

  • Help please- Lion wont recognise Nikon RAW files [nef]

Hello all, posted this issue on a number of forums to no avail - basically been using my iMac with Lightroom to download and process photos from my Nikon D300s and D90 for over a year - then I upgrade to Lion and it all stops [no other changes]. Now the D300s isn't visible at all and the D90 is visible but only offers the chance to "save" the NEF files elsewhere. Having been forced to download my NEF to an old mac mini and into iphoto I know its not the cameras, the cable or the memory card. I have checked I have the most upto date software on the cameras and the latest version of lightroom so it would appear Lion has either messed up some settings or Lion can't cope with NEF files - can anyone help this is really maddening! Thanks in anticipation

What you need to do is update your camera raw files on PE7. You need the camera raw 4.5 update. The instructions are on the download page.

  • Thumbnail Preview for RAW Files Not Appearing in Bridge

    Hello,
I'm running Adobe Bridge 5.1 on a Mac OS 10.9.2 (recently upgraded to Maverick) and I can no longer see thumbnail previews for my RAW files (which include .NEF, .CR2 and .RAF) though as of a few days ago this wasn't a problem. Not sure if it's related to the Maverick upgrade... but FYI, I do see thumbnail previews for .TIFF and .JPEG files.
I've already purged my cache generally and have also as a test chosen a local file to purge - that didn't work.
I've restarted Bridge at least 2x by pressing and holding the Option key.
I've also checked for Bridge updates - everything is up to date.
My Cache Options (within Preferences) are set to "Keep 100% Previews in Cache" and "Automatically Export Cache to Folders When Possible" - both checked.
Also downloaded the Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter 8.3, installed it but that didn't work.
I can't seem to find my Bridge cache folder or at least what's in the Library's "Caches" folder doesn't include anything for Bridge - see screenshot below.
Please help! Thank you in advance.

To me it seems related to your Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) converter. Clue inhere is you only miss the Raw files and have no problems in seeing other formats like jpeg and tiff.
The screenshot you delivered is from the wrong library, however, this same library (the one on system level) also is the location where you should be able to view the correct version of your ACR plugin. The path: library (same as per your screenshot)/Application support/ Adobe/ Plug ins/ CS6/ File Formats. inhere should be only one version of Camera Raw (called: "Camera Raw.plugin") and this should show version 8.3 (141).
I'm not sure about your bridge version number, Bridge 5 comes with PSCS6 but my most recent version of Bridge is 5.0.2.4.
Anyway, if you have only one ACR (8.3) installed in the above mentioned path then you might want to try to delete the Bridge plist file and Bridge cache file manually.
For this you have to Quit Bridge and find the user library (by default hidden, use menu Go in Finder and press option key to reveal).
Inhere find the plist file (user(your user name) / library / Preferences  and inhere find and manually delete the file called: "com.adobe.bridge5.plist"
The in same user library find Bridge Cache. User/Library/Caches/Adobe/Bridge CS6. Inhere are 2 files, the adobe Bridge plug in cache and the folder called Cache. delete (or move outside libray) both items.
The restart Bridge (If needed also again hold option key to reset preferences) and this will create fresh files for the previous deleted items, leaving you with an almost out of the box factory set version of Bridge.

  • How do you open raw files (NEF from Nikon) in the edit workspace on Elements 8

how do I get raw NEF files (from Nikon) to open in the edit workspace of elements 8?  I have windows 7 , and when I try to open NEF raw files from the viewer, it says cannot recognize the file type.
    Thanks!

What is your camera model? Every camera has its own raw format and the raw converter must be updated to work with it. If your camera model was new in the past couple of years PSE 8 won't be able to open those files directly.

  • Import all but raw files (NEF)..?

    Hi all -
New to iPhoto (and iP. only) I wonder if there's a way to batch import folders from 'Pictures' which contain jpeg and NEF (raw) files, without including these NEF files in the import.
I wish to have just jpeg and tiff files in the iPhoto library, or rather - keep all files in their position, but get iPhoto to point at the original jpeg and tiff files.
Suppose alternative is to move all raw files manually into new folders out of reach for iPhoto's import..?
    YoursTruly,

    redtop:
If your files are located in the Picturtes folder together in one subfolder you can sort them by type and the select all by the NEF files to drag into iPhoto's open window. Then when the jpgs and tiffs get copied into the library you can delete them from the Pictures folder to free up space on the HD.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application, iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar

  • IPhoto 09 not reading Nikon raw files (.nef) properly?

Hey everyone. Over the weekend I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Everything seemed to be working correctly until I started using iPhoto. Since the upgrade, I've noticed that photos that I imported from a Nikon D700 seem to look pixelated. I took it to a Genius Bar and the dude helping me was at a loss. He said to try and re-install Snow Leopard, which I did, and that didn't help. I went back and he upgraded me to iPhoto 09...also didn't help. He said he thinks that maybe it's Snow Leopard/iPhoto bug. He said that it's not reading the raw files correctly and seeing them as thumbnails. We looked at the photo info of a random photo, and even though it was a large 10MB file (indicative of raw format) its pixels were 160x160. Weird. Also of note, both Photoshop and Lightroom view and display all photos correctly.
If anyone has any suggestions or solutions on how to fix this it'd be much appreciated!!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
We looked at the photo info of a random photo, and even though it was a large 10MB file (indicative of raw format) its pixels were 160x160.
That means that what you're seeing is the jpeg Preview inside the NEF and not the actual file.
My guess is that the your Camera Raw bundle is damaged.
    Go to
    HD / System / Library / Core Services / RawCamera.bundle
What version of this do you have?

    Hi
After applying the steps given by Steve Fan, to verify the indexing status, please follow these steps: -
    If the
Indexing Status reports 0 items remaining and Instant Search is still not returning the correct search results, exit Outlook and restart your computer. When you start Outlook again, verify that Outlook is indexing your items
    properly by doing the following:
    On the
Tools menu, point to Instant Search, and then click
    Indexing Status.
Alternatively, click the arrow in the
Instant Search pane, and then click Indexing Status on the menu.
Verify that the number of items in the
Indexing Status dialog box has increased. If the number has not increased, you must wait until indexing is complete for the results.
If you are not getting results after restarting, the next step is to rebuild your search catalog. The search catalog is a file where all of your Outlook and Microsoft
Windows items are indexed. To rebuild your search catalog, do the following:
    Exit Outlook.
    In Microsoft Windows, click the
    Start > Control Panel.
    Windows Vista: click
    System Maintenance > Indexing Options.
Note: In the classic view, double-click
    Indexing Options.
    Microsoft Windows XP: Under
See Also, click Other Control Panel Options, and then click
    Indexing Options.
Note: In the Classic view, double-click
    Indexing Options.
    Click
    Advanced.
    Click Rebuild.
    Restart Outlook.

  • File- open displays only generic icons for psd and raw

Following a hard drive crash, I had to reinstall Photoshop CS5.  I've updated to the latest version (12.0.1) and updated my NVIDA GEForce 8600 driver to the latest from Dell. This is on a Dell XPS 410, 4 GB memory and hundreds of gigs of hard drive space. When I use the File-->Open menu and dialog to look for images to use, while JPG and most TIF icons are thumbnail icons, the CR2, CRW, PSD and DNG icons are all generic. There is no problem in Bridge or in LightRoom. Opening the image in Photoshop doesn't seem to help.
While I obviously have options, when I just need to go looking quickly for an image I know is there, this makes it difficult to find. What can I do to get those previews back?
    Thanks in Advance

Back up all data before continuing.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    mv Des*/.DS_Store .Trash/
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal.
Relaunch the Finder, then empty the Trash. Test.
