Raw files showing only as icons in bridge

This is a recent problem for me.  The raw files in question are ".pef" files from a Pentax k100d that I've had for quite some time.
I started having a problem with Bridge crashing on me.  In trying to solve that problem, I started Bridge by holding down the crtl key and choosing the three option to reset preferences and purge cache.  Since doing this, all my thumbnails have disappeared and I can't get them back.  I've read and found the appropriate locations for the camera raw plugins:
I am running 64 bit Vista. I have CS4 and found that the latest version of Camera Raw that I could install was version 5.7.  I found the install instructions on the Adobe site.  As it told me to do, I downloaded the zip file for version 5.7 and extracted.  I moved the Camera Raw.8bi file from the top directory into C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS4\File Formats and moved the Camera Raw.8bi file from the Win64 folder into C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS4\File Formats.
I also found the 5.7 Camera Raw installer and ran that.  I am still having the same problem.
I have spent the better part of two days googling and trying to figure out what I am doing wrong.
I've tried moving all my cache files and letting them regenerate.  I've purged the cache several times.  Nothing I do works.
I do notice that when I go to a directory of photos that I have not been to in a while, I see the thumbnail for a brief moment.  It quickly disappears and the flower icon appears.
Do I need to re-install Bridge?  Do I have to uninstall first?  I can't do that separate from Photoshop can I?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried all of those options: Prefer Embedded, High Quality on Demand, Always High Quality with every combination of Generate 100% previews.  Still nothing
I searched for all the instances of the camera raw file and it found 4 versions of the file 2 associated with CS4 and 2 associated with Photoshop Elements that I used a couple of years ago.

    Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen!
My question concerns the impossibility to open RAW-files directly from the program Adobe Bridge. At the moment when you open a RAW-file from Adobe Bridge by double-clicking, RAW-file is opened only in Photoshop. In the settings Adobe Bridge - in "open RAW-files by double-clicking in Adobe Camera Raw» box is checked. When you try any changes in the settings Adobe Bridge system displays a message:
Bridge's parent application is not active. Bridge requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature.

    /Users/[Your User Name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Elements Organizer/Catalogs/
    Hope this helps.
Please let me know if it doesn't worked.

  • Raw file thumbnail and preview problem in Bridge

When downloading raw files from my new Nikon D3, Bridge generates thumbnails that are a fixed size and the preview panel only shows a thumbnail as opposed to enlarging the image to fit the preview panel. Thumbnails and Preview still work fine with jpegs. My versions of CS3, Bridge and Version Cue are up to date, I believe.
    Thanks...

    Three things:
    • You need to make sure you have updated to Photoshop 10.0.1, Bridge 2.1.1.9 and Camera Raw (ACR) 4.6.
    • You need to purge the cache for the offending folders through the Tools menu in Bridge.
    • You need the Bridge forum:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/bridge/bridge_macintosh?view=discussions&start=0#
Please post there if you need further Bridge help.
Raw files from the D300 are not supported by the old, obsolete version of ACR that gets installed by default by CS3.  What you're seeing now is the embedded JPEG preview only, not the converted raw.   That's why you have to upgrade to ACR 4.6

  • Some PDFs Show Only Generic Icon

    Hello,
I hope someone has an answer for this.  I haven't used Bridge very much, but starting to use it to catalog a large batch of PDF files (Bridge CS5).  Most of my PDF files show actual previews in Bridge, but many other PDF files show only the generic PDF file icons.
I eventually figured out that the PDF files that show as generic icons are all files that someone had password-protected so that the files couldn't be printed or altered.  Apparently this password protection precludes Bridge from creating previews for these PDF files.
    Is this expected behavior?
Is there a way around this problem?  I don't know the password to the protected PDF files, so I can't open them in Acrobat Pro and change these settings.  All I want to do is view these PDF files in Bridge so I can sort them in in an efficient manner.
I would appreciate any discussion and/or help with this problem.
    Thank you very much.

I eventually figured out that the PDF files that show as generic icons are all
files that someone had password-protected so that the files couldn't be
    printed or altered.
If a PDF has password protection you can't view and open them without this
password, nor can you view it in Bridge (there is also no preview in the
Finder, just a lock symbol with PDF at the bottom). A normal PDF file can be
viewed as thumb in the content window but in the preview window you can also
run through a multipage PDF to view its content.
    Is this expected behavior?
Yes it is, a password is what it does, protect anyone from viewing it
without providing the password when asked for
Is there a way around this problem?  I don't know the password to the
protected PDF files, so I can't open them in Acrobat Pro and change these
settings.  All I want to do is view these PDF files in Bridge so I can sort
them in in an efficient manner.
There maybe someone that knows a very obscure way to break those passwords
but I don't know of it (nor would I like to know it....) so without the
password you will never be able to view them. Normally you won't also be
able to undo the security of a protected file without knowing the
    permissions password also.
So if you don't know the passwords and don't know how to get them your
easiest option will be delete them so they won't bother you again and also
don't take space on your system...

  • Nikon D4s files appear as generic icons in Bridge 6

Our Nikon D4s raw files appear as generic icons when viewed in Bridge 6. I have downloaded Camera Raw version 8.7.1, which lists the Nikon D4s as supported
. I also have the latest Nikon Transfer software. I read one message recommending to purge the cache, but no luck. I also restarted after the downloaded software, and re-downloaded the raw files from the memory card. Any ideas?

    Hi Yammer.
First thanks a lot for taking your time to help me. I am really happy about it!
    I will try to answer:
    1)
I meant by having the Camera Raw.8bi placed in BOTH "C:\Programmer\Adobe\Adobe Bridge CS5\Plug-Ins" and in C:\Programmer\Fælles filer\Adobe Plug-Ins\CS5\File Formats" the ACR will be found in two versions - or rather in two places (I know the former shouldn't be, but it solved my preview problem).
    2)
YES - I do have tried twice starting the Adobe Bridge holding down the Ctrl-key and ticking the two (the third was greyed out but ticked anyway) and with no help.
    3)
I have tried to do the *.8bi search you suggested, and this gives me the following dump - absolutely with a few more entries than yours. Some are like doubled.
Do you think I can just delete these?
    Kind regards, Jan

  • Photoshop Elements 5.0, 1 in 10 RAW files show broken

I have PS Elements 5.0 running on Vista Home Premium. I am shooting with a Sony Alpha 100 and the RAW files are .ARW. Approximately 1 in 10 of my RAW files show an end-of-file error. I've not yet update the firmware (should I need to?), but I have had a friend open up the same files in CS3 no problem. I have tried new memory sticks, used my laptop with the same Elements licence and I'm still having problems. It comes up with a greyed out box. If I delete the files from the HD and reinstall them, the same ones show up as broken, so it's something specific to these files. They open okay in the Sony RAW editor that came with the camera. What to do!?

  • CS2 Bridge RAW files show as icon only

I downloaded RAW files from my Nikon D700 to CS2 and Bridge only displays the RAW icon, not the thumbnail.  I did this same thing 2 weeks ago and before, and the thumbnail does display for those files.  Does anyone know how I can remedy this?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Raw files show as icons in bridge

I recently upgraded from cs5 to cs6, I have downloaded upgrades for photoshop, bridge, camera raw, and adobe dng converter.
My problem is that the raw dng, and raf raw files from my fuji x-e1 camera  are showing up in bridge as icons only, and not as thumbnails. How do I get the files to show as thumbnails. if I double click they will open in camera raw and i can see the pic there.

  • Can I filter out jpgs so only RAW files show?

I have my photos organized in folders like this:
    Photos
    --2007
    ----Family
    ------02-19_Picnic
    --------JPGs
    ------02-20_Stuff
    --------JPGs
    etc.
When I import everything into Lightroom and I just want to see the images from the 02-19_Picnic folder, it's showing me both the raw files and jpegs. Is there any way to only see what's in that main folder and not its root?

You can do it two ways: (BTW, I think you meant to say "main folder and not its subfolder")
    1) Click on 02-19_Picnic, this displays all files in that folder and subfolders. Next Cmd-click (I think that's Ctrl-click on Wintel) within the Metabrowser panel, on Raw [under File Type] - if your raws are DNG, then choose DNG. That performs an intersection and thus shows only the Raws. If you again Cmd-click on Raw and then on Jpeg, you get just the jpegs.
    2) Click on 02-19_Picnic, this displays all files in that and subfolders. Next, in Find, check "Any Text", and enter "dng", "cr2" or whatever your raw's extension name is. That again displays files in the picnic folder and subfolders that include the raw name somewhere in the metadata (including the file name).

  • Nikon NEF raw files show up in Bridge as "Untagged RGB"

I have a D700 and shoot in the AdobeRGB color space. However when I click on a picture in Bridge, the Metadata window shows "Untagged RGB". Why is Bridge showing inaccurate file information, and, I assume, not interpreting and displaying the picture with correct colors?

    Charles,
Raw files don't have colorspaces so the "Untagged" is essentially correct in that case. You select the colorspace when the raw file is developed, such as in Adobe Camera Raw.
Now, both Nikon and Canon allow colorspace to be selected in-camera and they will use this colorspace if Jpegs are being created.
In the case of raw files from the camera, I believe that the PC/Mac software provided by both manufacturers (Capture NX2 for Nikon?) will pick up a special flag from the file to set the default colorspace for the developed raw file to what was selected in camera. I am not sure about this though. Adobe Camera Raw, however, ignores those flags if they exist. In ACR, it will default to the colorspace last used for raw developing.

  • Corrupted RAW files show in Bridge but not Photoshop?

    Hi,
I have recovered some RAW files that were accidently deleted but most of them are corrupt in windows explorer (using recuva).  Adobe Bridge can see them but nothing else will open the files (or see them).  I really need to edit these files, any help would be appreciated.  I'm on win7 64 bit.  with adobe bridge cs 5.

What type of RAW files are we talking about, NEF,CR2 or other?
Bridge is just a flle browser, and RAW files are opened and edited in Adobe Camera Raw.  Do you just get a thumbnail, but it willl not open in ACR?
Does ACR work with other RAW images that have not been corrupted.
Do you have a backup (highly recommended) of these images somewhere?  Should be on seperate physical drive or on a DVD.

  • Canon Rebel Ti images showing only as icons

I just transferred my images from an old computer to a new one.  All of the photos that were originally uploaded from my Rebel XTi are only showing as icons and are not viewable.  I do not have the Rebel software installed on the new computer just the software for my 40D, could this be why?

I'm guessing you're probably using RAW and have not installed the Canon utilities on your new computer.
You'll want to do two things:
    1)  Using the disk that came with one of your cameras, install the Canon utilities (EOS Utility, Digital Photo Professional, Zoom Browser, etc.)   It actually doesn't matter which disk you use to install (you can use the disk that came with your XTi or your 40D).
    2)  Go to the Canon support site and download the latest version of these apps.  You can navigate to the product page for either camera (e.g. http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/eos_slr_camera_systems/eos_digital_slr_cameras/eos_40... )
The reason you needed to install the base version is that some of these downloads are not the full product... they're "updates".  Both the EOS Utility and Digital Photo Professional require that you have a base version installed, then you can apply the update.  This will bring you new computer up-to-date with the latest features of these apps including the ability to view and open the RAW images created by these cameras.
If you were using something else to view and edit your images (e.g. suppose you had installed Photoshop) then you would have to install that software on your new computer and would also likely need to check for updates from them as well.)
JPEG is a fairly universal format -- so it's rare to find any computer that can view JPEGs.  RAW, on the other hand, is more of a "concept" than a "standard".
Each camera can have it's own RAW format.  Consequently, each device that wants to view the files in the native RAW format has to understand that specific RAW format.
Apple simplifies this... they provide "Camera RAW Updates" at the operating system level which means that the computer does understand (and can open) any of the RAW images even without installing any specifial software.
Windows is a different story... Microsoft does not provide any sort of RAW support at the operating system level.  Instead, you have to get RAW support from 3rd parties.
The Canon utilities provided with your camera will know how to open and view any of the photos taken by your camera provided you installed those Canon utilities.  If you use Adobe software, then you'd have to install the RAW updates provided by Adobe.
RAW images typically contain a small JPEG "preview" image embedded within the RAW file.  Many computers and applications that see the JPEG preview even if they can't actually open the full RAW file.
