RAW format compatibility with iPhoto

I am looking for a new camera that supports RAW. It is my understanding each camera manufacturer uses a different file extension on their RAW images implying there is a difference between the file formats. The list that Apple supplies for cameras that can be used with iPhoto is not up to date as many newer cameras do not show up on their list.
Would it not be safe to assume that if, for example, Canon comes out with a new camera with RAW format support their file type which is .CRW would automatically work with iPhoto. The same would be for Nikon, Olympus and the rest. If the new camera uses the same file extension as one of the older cameras by the same manufacturer on Apples compatibility list the new camera will be compatible.
Here is the list of extensions I found by manufacturer.
.raf (Fuji)
.crw .cr2 (Canon)
.kdc .dcr (Kodak)
.mrw (Minolta)
.nef (Nikon)
.orf (Olympus)
.dng (Adobe)
.ptx .pef (Pentax)
.arw .srf (Sony)
.x3f (Sigma)
.erf (Epson)
.mef .mos (Mamiya)
.raw (Panasonic)
.r3d (Red)

This document should answer most of your questions: Digital camera RAW formats supported by Mac OS X 10.5.
Oops, didn't see that you were still using Tiger. This document may be more appropriate in that case: iPhoto 6: Supported RAW format cameras. There may be a Tiger doucment like the one for Leopard but I wasn't able to find it just now.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Help: Nikon D50/RAW compatability with iPhoto

I'm going to buy my first Mac tomorrow (20" iMac for those interested) and I'm wondering if I need to buy Aperture right away or wait a while. If iPhoto can handle Nikon's RAW format, which is NEF, I will hold off on Aperture. Does anyone have experience with this? Any help is appreciated!

I don't use RAW but, from what I've heard, iPhoto doesn't do very much with it. Of course, I never did understand why amateurs want to use it anyway. Be that as it may, why not wait until you get your Mac and find out for yourself?

  • Importing RAW format files into iPhoto 08

    Hi Guys,
I searched the back catologue and couldn't find any refs so hopefully this is a valid new post.
I use iPhoto 08 on an iMac and have always worked with importing jpegs from my cheap but faithful old camera. I now have a nice sexy (& expensive) new camera & can take pictures in RAW format for increased quality. IPhotos tutorials say that it supports RAW but everytime I try to import some files I get a "could not import file" message against the RAW files. My camera automatically takes a duplicate jpeg each time I make a RAW exposure and they import without any problems. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Many thanks. Steve

    Steve
    What camera is it?
The Raw from every camera model is different - note that's camera Model, not brand - and has to be supported separately. So, the Raw from a Nikon D3 is not the same as the Raw from a Nikon D3s and so on - even though they both produce files with a NEF extension. Same with Canon and it's CR2 files and so on.
Raw support can also depend the OS and version of iPhoto that you have.
    Regards
    TD

  • When I download my NEF (RAW) format picture into iPhoto, the format is automatically transformed to JPEG. How can I keep my NEF format?

When I download from my Nikon camera a NEF format picture, iPhoto transformes it automatically to JPEG. How can I keep the NEF format?

Your RAW photos are safely in iPhoto - the JPEGs are simply display previews and versions for use by other program  ---  you can export the RAW by exporting with kind original

  • HT201071 RAW format Problem with NIKON D600 after updating to maverick.

We still have problems after this update.
Pictures in RAW format imported to Aperture are brilliant as they are with the NIKON D600. Imported Pictures with the NIKON D800 are aweful. They are kind of grey without any saturation. To convert every single Picture to JPEG brings back their brilliance and colors. We have consulted the apple and the aperture support, but they dind't have any solution to fix our issue.
    Any ideas?

Have you also asked in the Adobe forums?  To have people read your post, best not to include long crash reports until asked to do so.

  • Tiger compatibility with iPhoto

I am about to update a G4 with iPhoto to Tiger. I am currently running 10.0 on the machine. Is there a danger of losing iPhoto when I install the new Tiger? I have backed up the photos themselves. Thanks.

    Hi macinyart,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
Yes, you will lose all your applications and data, so make sure you have a complete backup! Reason: in order to upgrade from 10.0.x to 10.4.x you have to perform an Erase&Install. You will have to either reinstall your applications from the original disks or restore them from your backup after you upgraded.

  • Help With Panasonic DCM-LX1 RAW Compatibility with iPhoto

Can someone share their successful experience of importing RAW files into iPhoto from their Panasonic LX1? I posted this question earlier but all replies were lost somewhere in web Limbo when sent to my email. My Mac will import photo and video files from the LX1 in a JPEG & TIFF format but will not recognize and will not import photos shot in RAW, my personal format choice. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

I have the same camera so i checked out the raw images--sorry no spots show up.

  • HT3946 What about RAW file compatibility with Nikon D4?

Having trouble with RAW files from Nikon D4, didnt have issues before update, any help?

My apologies for the vague question.  To be more specific after installing the latest update to Aperture, RAW files from my D4 after being transfered into Aperture cannot be opened.  Message saying Aperture does not support these files.  Not sure if it has anything to do with XQD card, all formatted as usual.  Stumped.
thank you kindly for your time.

  • Mpeg.ts format compatibility with Premiere Elements

I am currently trying to access Mpeg.ts formats with Premiere_Elements 9 operated under W7.
It seems that it is rather impossible to do that in a simple way.
Has anybody already experienced such an issue ? (and preferably solved it).
    Looking forward for your help.

    Nepomucene
The answer is that Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 Windows does not support MPEG2.ts. Premiere Elements 10, 11, and 12 do.
I have confirmed this by actually working with MPEG2.ts in the programs mentioned.
If you are restricted to the use of Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1, you might want to consider converting them to another format with a program
such as MPEG Streamclip which does do batch exports if batch exporting is an included requirement for your work.

  • PSE12 compatibility with iPhoto 11 v 9.5

Is it possible to edit Apple iphoto11 v 9.5 images in PSE 12? I get a blank editor screen each time.

That usually means you chose the logical file as your external editor instead of the correct file. The actual PSE editor is hidden away in the Support Files folder:
The file at the top level is only an alias for the welcome screen.

  • Dealing with unsuported RAW formats?

I have a Leica D-Lux 3, very good compact made from Panasonic belt with some software improvments of the Jpeg internal treatment.
My issue is that Aperture even after the latest upgrade 1.5.2. don't support this RAW format, although Adobe element has a convertor tool.
Does anyone know if Aperture is going to release new patch to extend the number of RAW formats supported, including this one?
I'm new at MAC and I was really thrilled to use Aperture with my new toy providing RAW files on which I could apply standard and my own image processing setup.
I'm bit confused with the utility of Aperture without the support of RAW formats like with Adobe PS elements?
Does anyone use an external convertor on top of Aperture?
    Any suggestion is welcome.

Aperture supports the Leica Digilux 2 and Panasonic DMC-LC1.
If either of these share the same ccd sensor, you may have a chance.
If so, you need to edit the RAW plist file. There are threads on this and I got a Canon powershot s40 to work by doing it.
Essentially you'll copy the section from the target camera, and then paste it. Edit the camera model on the duplicate to be your Leica model and save.
You'll have to allow preferences before editing and reset preference after editing.
Failing this hack working, no, you'll need to covert outside Aperture and import as TIF, PSD or JPG.

  • Problems reading RAW format after update 6.03

I have problems reading RAW format images into Iphoto 9.6 after update 6.03 or maybe earlier updates (have not imported for a few months). The images show up like half, black or partly distorted. I use a Canon 5D mk2 camera. The images looks okey when read into a PC so I don´t think it is the camera or cables. It has been working very good before! I use a Powerbook pro 13 late 2011 with Yosemite 10.10.1.

Try downgrading back to 6.02 by following the directions in this post by léonie:

Make a backup of your system and try to downgrade the RAW support to version 6.01
To downgrade the RAW Support to the last version from before the last update try this:
To reinstall the 'RAW Compatibility Update' it is necessary to uninstall the currently installed raw support. Otherwise the installer will rightfully say, that you already have the latest version installed.
If your tests are showing that the problem happens also in a different user account, try this:
The RAW support files are installed in the System Library in the folder "/System/Library/CoreServices" Folder:
To open this folder, use the Finder's "Go" menu. Click the smiling Finder icon in the Dock to bring the Finder forward.
Then type the keyboard shortcut ⇧⌘G  (for "Finder > Go > Go to folder")  and copy and paste "/System/Library/CoreServices" into the text field. Click the "Go" button.
In the Finder window that will open, delete both the files "RawCamera.bundle" and "RawCameraSupport.bundle". You will have to enter your Administrator password. (don't empty the Trash, so you can put the files back, if need be)
Download the current RAW support update from Apple's Support Site:
Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 6.01 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1777?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
In the Downloads folder you will find the disk image with the installer. Double click it to open and run and the installer.
    Then restart your Mac.

  • Convert RAW to JPEG in iPhoto

    Good afternoon,
I'm attempting to clear hard drive space and realized I have 2,000+ photos in RAW format in my iPhoto library. Is there a way that I can convert all of these to JPEGs within iPhoto 9 and delete the RAW files without having to reorganize them back into events and such? I've changed the way I manage my photos these days - these are all quite old so I don't mind losing the RAW. Plus I have them backed up on my Time Machine.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for any responses.
    Best,
    Taylor

    No
For iphoto to work it must have the original (in your case the RAW)
If that is not what you want then you should not shoot RAW - or you should not use iPhoto (or maybe both)
And if you think that haveing them backedup on Time Machine is an archive you are in for a nasty surprise - Time Machine is a backup system which keeps a limited amount of historical data (amount is detern=mined by available disk space) and then delete the oldest data - it is not an archive system
There are progrtams out there that claim to be able to do this - DO NOT USE THEM if you care about your photos - there is no way to do what you want if you use iPhoto
You can run iPhoto with th elibrary on an extrnal hard drive  --
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
You can also keep a smaller version of the library on your internal drive and use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -   to move photos between the two libraries

  • Edit photo in RAW format

Can I edit a raw format photo in iphoto? If so, how do you import it? I tried and said it
is unrecognizable. I just learned about this format that is great to edit, but not sure
    how to do it.
    Thanks
    Jeff

iPhoto for iOS does nit edit the RAW format. I suggest editing RAW files on your computer. If you are using a Canon camera use the DPP program supplied with your camera.

  • Olympus Evolt E-500 Digital SLR is compatible with iPhoto?

Does anyone know if the Olympus Evolt E-500 Digital SLR is compatible with iPhoto ( I do not want to have to use Olympus software)? I know it is not listed on the official Apple list but am curious if anyone could speak from experience. I am looking at purchasing a digital SLR and am considering the Evolt E-500 but would like to understand its compatibility with iPhoto.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

RAW ORF files will not work as of yet. JPEG and TIFF are okay. I have CS2 and had to download a RAW beta from Adobe to process my RAW files. I knw that my friend had problems with CR2 files (Canon 350D) when Tiger was at 10.4.2. He would see the thumbnails in finder column view but Preview and iPhoto before the last update would not work. When 10.4.3 came all is well; so I ma hoping 10.4.4 will let us use ORF RAW files fromour E500. If you get a chance check out the forums at www.dpreview.com and the Olympus DSLR forum and the MAC tools forum. When I got my E500 I started shooting RAW right away. You will find more control in processing the the RAW to jpeg. Hope this helps.
