RAW image and preview dramatically different

I'm using Aperture 2.1 and am recently finding myself extremely unsatisfied with the rendering of my RAW images created with my Nikon D50.
I am shooting in just RAW (NEF) and sRGB, and am exposing for what I am seeing on the back of my camera. At times I use manual, and others I use the Program setting with a -1.3 exposure compensation since the camera leans too bright; I seem to recall everything exposing correctly until recently. But my memory is shoddy when it comes to how things previously appeared.
The preview before importing shows much the same image that I intended (exposure-wise), as does the quick preview for a second or so during the import process. Shortly after, my pictures all become dull and dark, lacking color and appearing about 2 stops underexposed.
I love photography, but am personally baffled by the issue of color profiles, RAW images JPEG previews, and all that jazz. Nothing seems to explain these adequately, which is why I'm reaching out to those more knowledgeable than me. I am unsure if it's my camera, Aperture, color spaces, or just settings within Aperture or my camera.
Once again, I want to say this is a recent problem, but it may just be that I only noticed recently.

I have exposed to the image on the LCD before and produced wonderful results. Or, at the very least, results that didn't drive me to post on a discussion board.
As per your questions:
--I use 4 different methods to determine how I am exposing my image. In Manual, I use the TTL metering chart in the viewfinder (usually exposing -0.7 to -1.3 so as to compensate for the tendency for the camera's meter to overexpose), the resulting image on the LCD, the histogram, and the in-camera highlights indicator (since, once again, it has a tendency to try and overexpose an image). In Priority modes, I use the camera's exposure compensation setting to set the compensation to -0.7 or -0.1. The resulting JPEG that I see in the pre-import thumbnails and the brief seconds during import are exactly the exposure I want, but when Aperture finishes importing, it's entirely too underexposed. And it's not just that-- the color seems to be worse than it would if it were just simple underexposure... it all feels grey.
-- I use matrix metering most of the time, with spot metering in the rare instance that requires more precise measurement than just tweaking the aperture or shutter up or down a stop or so. Snow or water pictures are a prime example.
Just so we're clear, I know how to use a camera. I know how to expose properly, and in the past year with my camera, I feel I've figured out its quirks. It takes a lot to drive me to discussion boards, as I usually figure out problems myself. But, since the lingo and strange things of digital photography (Color Space, EXIF data, RAW conversion engines, etc.) confuses me sometimes, I am looking for more human help. I haven't had this problem (or this dramatic of a problem) in the past.
The RAW images outside of the last couple of months seem fine (maybe having something to do with the fact that I upgraded to 2.1 from the 1.0 software about 6 months ago and am finally getting back to photography during my summer break). And the JPEGs that I am apparently exposing for are fine as well. It's just after Aperture imports the RAW file that I am having these problems.
Like I said, I want to continue to use RAW. I want it to work like I thought it was working in the past (that is, without major exposure headaches). But I want the image that I thought I was getting. So how do I make Aperture see the same (or nearly the same) image that I am seeing in the JPEG thumbnail? The difference is just too dramatic to pass it off as quirks and be okay with that. And no, at least as the photography part goes, I do not think it's a short between the floor and the camera.

  • When opening an image Photoshop Elements 12 is opening it in Camera Raw, it is not a RAW image and it is cropped How do I uncrop the opened image?

When I am opening a .jpg image not an actual raw camera image from Elements 12 it is being opened as a camera Raw image and the image is cropped, I can't find anyway to get the image to uncrop or zoom out so that the entire image is visible so that I can actually edit it to something that is useable. The images were taken with an iPad and copied I suspect using the organizer from Elements 11 but I can't be sure. If I could just uncrop the opened image so that the entire image is visible this would not be a big deal.
Is there a way to uncrop the image that is being opened by Camera Raw? Am I going to have to get my hands on the source of the images (the iPad) and copy the images again using explorer and not let them be copied with the organizer?

Uncheck the boxes at the bottom of the dialog Scale styles and resample Image so that only constrain proportions is checked. If you the change the resolution box from 240 to 300 you will get back to your original dimensions.
This is a meaningless thing to do, you still have the exact same number of pixels, you have only changed the metadata number in the file for ppi, and your prints are not affected by this number.
You could also use the same method to change the dimensions to 6 x 4 or 9 x 6 etc.
There are some cases (actually most cases) where you need to CROP the photo to change the dimensions, when the aspect ratio of the original photos is different than the aspect ratio of the final photo; the specific case in 99jon's example is the only case you ever want to change dimensions using Image->Resize->Image Size, where the aspect ratio doesn't change from 6x4 to 9x6 (or 12x8 or 18x12 or ...), and even then, you could do the same thing simply by telling the printer the size you want, you don't really need to do anything in PSE.

  • How do I place an image and insert a different photo for the "mouse down" state?

I have placed an image within an accordian widget and when I select the "mouse down" area in the states dialog box, i click "fill" in the toolbar and insert the photo i want to display when the image is clicked but this image is "covered up" by the originally placed image and is not seen in my states dialog box.
I have done this before when i made rectangles and placed images in rectangles. But i soon realized that you cannot add alternative text to images in rectangles for some frustrating reason.
How do I place and image and have a different image for the mouse down state?

    Hello,
This effect can only be achieved when you use the images as a Rectangle Fill. And as you mentioned it above, you cannot add alternative text to images because it is added as a fill and not as a image.
I would suggest you to post this as a feature request on our "Ideas for features in Adobe Muse" section of the forums : http://forums.adobe.com/community/muse/ideas

  • Fuji S5 Raw Images and Processing

    Hi
I am thinking of upgrading my Nikon d40x to a Fuji S5 and wanted to make sure this was 100% compatible with Aperture (which I use a lot). I have downloaded a RAW image and found that it works apart from the recovery and black point, is the file only then compatible with Aperture 1.0 and 1.5?
    Any help welcome

    Have you tested it yet?
Send me a file if you want and I will try it?

  • Can't see RAW images in Preview of Nikon D80

When I connect camera, Import window shows icons of images on camera.
Jpgs are visible as photographs; Raw images are just icon placeholders.
How can I see which Raw images to import?

    Jack
Some of the answers to your original question must have well and truly confused you by now. Now here's my contribution:
    (a) you don't need to shoot RAW + JPG's in order for a preview to be displayed. Just by shooting RAW you are also in fact creating a very small JPG image which is embedded into the file and which needs additional software in order to extract it. It is this small embedded JPG file that Lightroom uses in it's preview. To all intents and purposes you can forget all about it.
    (b) whether or not the fact that you are not seeing a preview image on attempting to import is down to not using a Card Reader or not I can't say - I only ever use a Card Reader. It might well be worth your while trying, not only is it more reliable but it is also faster. But just to reiterate - you DON'T need to shoot RAW + JPG to see a preview image. Where this idea came from I have no idea - I have never ever shot RAW and JPG together and have ALWAYS got a preview image.

I also have EOS Utility installed (on both Laptop and Desktop PC) and as far as I can ascertain the update to v1.1 has not had any effect, either to LR or EOS Utility. If there is a problem with placements as opposed to thumbnail images then the problem lies elsewhere in all probability.

  • RAW Images and Photo Books

Anybody tried using RAW images to build a photo book? I shoot my pics in combined RAW/jpeg formats - the jpegs are low res, so I would prefer to use the higher quality RAW images in making my book. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

    You can’t.
RAW is a total sensor dump from the camera. The only thing you can do is process your RAW into good quality jpegs (or tiff or whatever) and use those. You cant even Print a RAW.\
When you import a RAW to iPhoto the app automatically creates a JPEG preview of the File. That makes the whole RAW+jpeg shooting rather pointless.

  • Best way to archive RAW Images and keep JPG?

    Hello everyone,
I have what I believe to be a fairly simple question.  My iPhoto library, comprised mainly of RAW images, is taking up a majority of my MacBook's 500GB storage capacity, and I want to fix this. I want to keep all the photos in my library accessible on my mac, but they do not necessarily need to be in RAW format.
    My thought:
    1) Archive my entire iPhoto library in original format (RAW) to an external hard drive
    2) Convert the MacBook's iPhoto library to JPG format, freeing up a considerable amount of space on my hard drive
My only concern is the safety of my original (RAW) library.  The last thing I want to do is lose those minimally processed images.  Is it safe/possible to export an entire library to an external hard drive?  If I do that, will I be able to hook up that hard drive and view the images under iPhoto?  Is there a simple way to convert an entire library to JPG?  Is there a better way to accomplish my goal of freeing space?
Thanks in advance for any advice/help y'all can provide.
    Best,
    Steven

You won't be be "exporting" a library, just moving it:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
That's the Library with the Raws moved.
    3. To view that Library: Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
There is no way to "convert" a library. The best you can do is export the images from the Library as Jpegs to folders in the Finder. Trash the Library. Make a new one. Then import the images from the folders. A lot of work, and a job that will need to be repeated as you add images.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
It might be time to upgrade to Aperture.
With Aperture you can have your Library on the internal disk but store the Raws on the External. You'll still be able to view and share your images without the external connected if you choose to generate previews. While this is theoretically possible with iPhoto, it lacks the tools to manage the referenced images properly.

  • LR 5 Raw images and some jpegs not showing even after Sync.

I have LR 5 (latest update).  When I was trying to edit a photo from 12/2013 I noticed that only the jpeg images were previewing.  I ran a sync of the folder which showed no files to import.  The files are there; I've used them, I can see them.    Looks like it's all the files in folder 2013 pics, but not 2014 pics. Any ideas on how to fix? Thanks!

  • Resizing RAW thumbnail and preview

No one in Adobe technical support seems to be able to help me.
I've updated CS2 to CS5, and in Bridge, am unable to increase the thumbnail and preview size of .CR2 images. JPEGS, PDF, PSDs... they all resize fine. And before you ask... yes I know about the slider at the bottom. And yes I have tried all the 'cache' options.
I have also tried to create a new login with administrator rights (at the request of tech support) and it still has the same issue.
I have also reinstalled CS5 once as well.
    Any suggestions? Pretty please?

Thanks for reporting back, still some questions.
Did you search for hidden cache files other than the before named cache
    files?
Here or some of my thoughts about your attempts:
    >> Purged the cache Bridge CS5
Have you already tried to delete the complete cache folder manually from the
user library cache/adobe/adobe Bridge CS5 location? After restart Bridge
creates a fresh, new but completely empty cache file and you need to recache
    your thumbs and previews.
    >> Deleted the Bridge preferences.
By this you mean the plist file from user library and combined with
restarting Bridge holding down option key and choose reset preferences?
    >> Re-created the SwitchBoard preferences files.
Could you explain how? To my knowledge Switchboard resides at root level on
your system and serves Adobe Air that is also used by Bridge as part of the
CS suite. But I'm not aware of an option to recreate the preferences?
    >> Updated all software including Camera Raw Plug-in and Bridge and Photoshop
That should do but for security check if you have only one version active
(in PS Menu Photoshop about plug ins - Camera Raw, it should say 6.3.0.79)
    >> Created new user
Most efficient to rule out user specific problems, which brings me to the
question if you have the default application folder as place for installed
    CS applications?
    >> Reset all work space
    It was a wild guess...
    >> Deleted and reinstalled CS5 twice now
That is time spoiled if you did not use the Adobe Clean tool also to get rid
of all preferences. See this article also with the download of the clean
    tool itself.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs5clean.html
I just can't understand why it is only RAW images. All other formats are fine.
    It is odd.
Might narrow it down on the raw converter?
    Any other suggestions?
Personally I would start from Scratch. First read about the Clean Tool and
be sure to back up all your customized settings, actions tools etc in all
CS5 applications. Use the save option as much as possible for these settings
you want to keep and give the files a proper name and new folder so you can
import them again in an easy way.
Deactivate the software and use the uninstaller that can be found in the
separate Suite applications in the application folder. Then use the clean
tool and then use a search like spotlight (but preferable the free or almost
free Easy Find that also finds hidden files) to check on all other Adobe
files that reside on your system and decide if you trash them or place them
in a separate folder outside the library.
Don't forget to delete the hidden cache files for Bridge. You will need some
time to recache the lot but if it works it is all worth it.
If it does not work I help you crying if that is of some comfort for you

  • Colour change/tone between Raw image and elements 9 image

Elements 9. Recently started having this problem that was not there when I first installed E9 I set the picture up in RAW and all seems well with result as I want it. When then opening elements from the RAW image, the image shown to me in elements is noticeably darker and has colour variation on it. Basically I can't trust the elements image to be reflective of what prints out or the RAW image. This is more than annoying now.... I'm reluctant to re-install as I don't want to experience any new problems as a result. Any thoughts on this from anyone please?

OK, checked the colour settings. Everything was set like you suggested.
But the problem has been way less noticeable during the past months. Maybe because I made a recalibration some time ago. The screendumps I attached where made this spring. So there might be a chance my monitor profile was corrupt back then, but got OK since i recalibrated.
I'll do some more tests, saying thanks for now for the quick reply.

  • Nikon D300 Raw Images and Lightroom 1.4.1

My updated 1.4.1 Lightroom and 4.4.1 Camera Raw are not reading the raw images from my new Nikon D300. I have read several strings of conversation from other folks who are having this problem, and from what I am reading, my 1.4.1 Lightroom should be recognizing them, but it's not. Any help would be MOST appreciated.

  • Can't download RAW images and see them

I'm using Bridge 3.  When I download RAW images, all I get is the same amount of thumbnails that say CR2 (on a blue banner) on a page with a gray lens.  What's happening?

They're all blue with a flower motif.  Does this
information help narrow down the possibilities any?
It still indicates you have not the right ACR plug in for the file type of
Raw you are using or your install of ACR plug in is fault.
In PS check in menu Photoshop / about plug ins / Camera Raw. Inhere should
be only one version visible and it should say 4.6 in your case if you have
    installed that plug in correctly.
If this is correct check if your camera that produced the Raw files is
listed in the supported dSLR for that version. Check this link and if it
does not work for you (many links are country specific on the Adobe site) do
a Google search on:  " supported raw files for ACR 4.6"
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4033
If that camera is not in the list find the latest DNG converter (version
6.1, it is in the list on the Adobe site / support / updates and search for
    DNG)
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Maci
    ntosh
Use this converter to convert your files to DNG and try again.

  • Help with importing .raw images and b+w filters

I have recently been taking alot of b+w images.  With most of these images I apply a red in camera filter.  When I then import the pictures into lightroom 2.3 a color version of my picture is then rendered, without the red in camera filter that i took the pictures with.  Does anyone know of a way to restrict lightroom from changing .raw images to their color version and to show them as they were taken.  If it matters I shoot with a Canon 1000D.   PLEASE HELP!!   Thanks.

Lightroom ignores metadata settings which are what is applied when you work with RAW and use Canon's Picture Style settings.
Those will be applied to JPG, but not RAW.  This is actually a feature, not a bug, because it's considered to give you more control by using the settings in Lightroom for Monochrome, and apply red tints-- plus you could always still have the flexibility of making a color print if you wanted, which you'd lose if RAW enforced the Picture Style settings.  If it bugs you, shoot in RAW+Jpeg (or just Jpeg), and bring the Jpegs into LR, but I'd recommend sticking with RAW and applying the edits you want in Lightroom instead.

  • Is there a batch process for opening multiple raw images and applying the same, stored preset?

I often have multiple exposures of the same subject, which I would like to treat identically. At present I have to open each one individually in Camera Raw, apply the preset, save, go on to the next, etc.
Looking for a way, if there is one, to select them all, in order to apply the preset to all at once. Or perhaps there may be a scripting method to allow this?

Which version of photoshop, camera raw and operating system are you using?
You should be able to open all the images inside camera raw, Select All  (upper left of the camera raw dialog above the filmstrip of open images) and then apply the settings to all the selected images.

  • In Aperture, why do my RAW images momentarily preview well, degrade into extreme colour fringing

    EOS 60D, EF 50mm f/1.4 USM.
Shot at f/1.4, ISO 3200, Auto white balance
I've loaded the images into Aperture 3.0, and they preview well while the images are loading (I'm assuming they're JPEG previews) then heavily degrade in quality after the image has fully loaded.
Is this a camera, lens, or Aperture issue?

I have no experience with what you are seeing but I can offer, my Mac buddies complain about poor performance with some of the Mac OS's and certain post processing software. I would start troubleshooting there.
