Raw image in LR looses saturation etc when moved into Photoshop

Hi,
I don't understand what is happening. My raw files look great in LR (and also in Camera Raw) but when I choose in LR Edit In Photoshop, the image transferred is highly undersaturated and truly not the same I have in LR or CR. It would seem that the profile I  have assigned to my raw files is not being respected.
I have checked options in LR and everything seems ok, like:
in Catalog Settings, Metadata tab, I have the following checked:
Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD files
     Automatically write changes into XMP
Now, there used to be a dialog that asked me if I wanted the original or a copy... it never came up again, why? I mostly work on raw files.
Please help,
Juan Dent

It would seem that the profile I  have assigned to my raw files is not being respected.
How did you set up the color settings in Photoshop (edit menu)? It should be set to always respect embedded profiles. In the advanced section (click more options) it should NOT have "desaturate colors by" enabled. If you still get large differences, there are several possible reasons. The main one is that the monitor profile might be corrupt. You should check your calibration. This monitor profile corruption is very common on windows machines.
Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD files
     Automatically write changes into XMP
These are irrelevant for the Photoshop integration. You should not have to turn on automatic xmp writes.
Now, there used to be a dialog that asked me if I wanted the original or a copy... it never came up again, why? I mostly work on raw files.
This dialog should only come up with non-RAW files such as tiff, jpeg, or psd. For RAW files, it should go straight into Photoshop, without giving you an intermediate ACR screen although ACR is used in the background.
A last reason for apparent desaturation that I should tell you about is the color noise reduction. This is probably not it, but I'll tell you about it for completeness. In Develop, Lightroom only applies color noise reduction in the 1:1 view. When you have lots of color in your image that is only a few pixels large, the color noise reduction might get get rid of it, but Lightroom will not show it to you in the zoomed out view. Then when you go to Library or go to Photoshop, it will suddenly show you an image that is apparently desaturated, while actually the view in Lightroom was highly oversaturated. Turn off the color noise reduction to get around this issue.

  • Can I keep tags etc when moving to Photoshop Elements 9 from version 5?

Have just installed Elements 9.0 on new PC wth windows 7. Have moved pictures from old PC which had Elements 5.
Can I transfer (restore) the tags etc from old version to new one?
What do I need to do?
I have not yet connected pictures to Elements 9 - they are just in My pictures file/folder.

    Hi Bill
There was a major change in the user interface and program coding between PSE5 and PSE6.
Make sure you have the 0.2 update for PSE5 before doing the update.
The backup/restore may work but catalog upgrade/conversion may be better when you load the new software.

Go to Help>Updates in the editor and do it that way instead.

  • Problems with Quality of Raw file when pulled into Photoshop

I use Photoshop CS3 with ACR plugin version 4.6.0.30 installed.  When I pull my RAW files into it,  I seem to lose a lot of information.  For example I took a picture of my black dog.   I set the camera (Canon 40d) to save the file in both RAW and high res JPG.  When I pull both files directly into photoshop the JPG has more detail information in the highlights and shadows than the RAW file does.  This should be the reverse.  To see if the problem was in the file or in the process of pulling it into photoshop I also pulled it in through Lightroom.  Then I used Zoom Browser (software that came with my camera).  Zoom Browser forced me to convert to a TIFF before importing it to Photoshop.  I'll try attaching a file I made that shows the results of each.
My conclusion is that there is not a problem with the CR2 file, since the CR2 file converted to the TIFF has the most detail, but something is happening when I import it into photoshop.  I just don't know what settings I should be looking at to fix this problem.  Any help would be appreciated.

Camera Raw 101: ACR has different baseline "Defaults" than the Canon software, therefore you will need to make your own adjustments–and perhaps save out a new ACR Default. Canon's software only has to worry about a small sampling of cameras. Camera Raw supports over 230 cameras' raw files. As a result Canon's software tends to match the in camera JPEG and the camera's LCD by default.
Camera Raw on the other hand is more concerned offering a normalized default rendering of the raw data. Rather than trying to force a certain "look" (generally higher in contrast and more saturated) ACR will show the raw data a bit flatter and less saturated.
Fact is, Camera Raw has a huge number of controls for the express purpose of allowing the user to maintain total control over the rendering of the raw data...what you need to do is learn how to use all the sliders....

  • Raw Images opened and saved as TIFF of PSD in photoshop not added to LR library

Images opening from LR to PS6 are opened as CR2 files (canon) and then saved in PS - the resulting saved images are PSD files. These files are not added to the LR catalog without re-importing them. This behavior is different than it was in CS5 - in CS5 they are opened as PSD and immediately added to the LR catalog. I want the same bahavior in CS6. In LR I have set preferences to open files as PSD but they are not PSD until they are saved in PS.

The behaviour you are now seeing when using CS6 is normal when Lightroom and Photoshop are in sync in respect of the ACR level, i.e. the derivative PSD/TIFF is NOT created until you hit Save in PS. When the ACR levels are not in sync (i.e. the PS version is lower than the LR version, as is the case using LR4 and CS5) the "ACR Mis-match" dialog appears (though you may have ticked the "Do Not Show Me Again" box after selecting "Render Using Lightroom") and in that situation the derivative file is created by Lightroom, so you see it appear in LR before it is opened into PS. The fact that the filename that you see in CS6 shows the CR2 extension is not an issue (PS always retains the raw file's full name until it is saved as a derivative file....try opening a raw file directly into CS5/CS6 from outside Lightroom and you'll see), and it will change as soon as you select Save, at which point you should also see the PSD/TIFF appear in Lightroom.
So the only question is, why are you not seeing it? Can you confirm that when you are done in PS that you are selecting "Save" and not "Save As"? And that Lightroom is still running when you do that? And what source are you working from: Folder, Collection, Smart Collection? When you import the PSD, is "Do not import suspected duplicates" cheched or unchecked?

  • Images in ACR are softer than when viewed in Photoshop?

    Greetings,
I'm finding that when I view a RAW image in ACR 4.1 that the image does not appear as sharp as when I open the image from ACR into Photoshop and view it in Photoshop. I open my RAW files from ACR into Photoshop as PSD files. The image as viewed in Photoshop looks sharper at values less than 100%. Here's a screen grab of the same image (Photoshop on the left, ACR on the right), side by side at the exact same viewing size (23.1%), and the Photoshop image has more sharpness and clarity to it. It's minor, but noticeable in the leaves and bricks and it gives the ACR image an overall soft feeling.

Do the programs handle interpolation diferrently when viewing images at less than 100%? Or, do RAW and PS files inherently display differently when not viewed at 100%? When both are viewed at 100%, they match. This isn't a major deal breaker -- but the lack of clarity at smaller viewing sizes in ACR is unfortunate, since I rarely view images in ACR at 100% size when I'm reviewing images and images that I think are soft are, in fact, not.
The disparity seems more pronounced with images in portrait orientation.
    I'm using a Mac Pro, Radeon X1900, 23" ACD. Canon 5d images.
Anyone experience similar? I love ACR, but wondering if someone can shed some light on this.

Thanks for the clarification now -- it makes sense. I knew ACR only showed the effects of sharpening at 100%, but had forgotten to take into account Photoshop shows the effects of sharpening at all sizes, including under 100%

  • Why does LR name my images "Edit8bit" When opening into Photoshop?

I have preferences>external editing>Bit Depth set to 16 bits/component.  So why when I open my images is the file name saying they are 8 bit?  Photoshop shows them as "RGB/16".  The image mode shows 16 bit inside of photoshop.
These images start out in Lightroom as 12 or 14 bit RAW (NEF) images.  I'm just concerned that some sort of 8 bit conversion is happening before my images get loaded into photoshop and I am losing some color information in the process?  Am I?
I am currently on LR 5.2 and Photoshop CC 14.1.2  But this has been happening for many versions of LR and Photoshop

What have you got set as the External Editing File Naming scheme, bottom of the External Editing tab in the Lightroom Preferences? That's where the file name is (user) controlled:

  • How do you export a Premiere Pro screen shot without distortion when importing into Photoshop?

How can I take a screen shot in Premiere Pro (CS6 or CC) without it becoming distorted? Lately, when doing this, the images are elongated. Then, when I bring the image into Photoshop, it looks fine, except that the Pixel Aspect Ratio has been automatically engaged. I seem to not be able to do anything to the image to correct it and when saved, it goes back to its distorted form. What am I doing incorrectly? What is the fix for this? Is this a Premiere issue or a Photoshop issue? BTW, I posed the same question on the Photoshop forum. SIDE NOTE: I tried to resolve this via a chat session...that was an exercise in futility.
    Thanks!

The MTS files that I imported into my project are 1080i 29.97 fps, upper field first, 1.0 pixel aspect ratio.
I tried encoding an AVI with the Lagarith codec with these settings and had better results this time but the frame rate still stuttered.
I even tried making an MOV with the H.264 setting and had strange results.
I can make an H.264 MP4 at 1920x1080 with no problem.
What are the exact settings for an MOV or AVI just in case I missed something?  I really want to have an uncompressed file to archive that can be easily edited later on.  I'm thinking that MOV would be the most flexible format.

  • Vector Smart Object fades when pasted into Photoshop

I have a group of vector objects in Illustrator.  I am trying to copy and paste them into Photoshop just as I have done many times before.  This time, however, everytime I paste them, regardless of if I choose Smart Object of Pixels, the image appears on the Photoshop document but then fades to what appears to be less than 40% opacity as soon as I hit return or deselect.  The opacity still remains 100% and there aren't any other layers on top of the new one.
Does anyone know why this may be happening?  I'm running both Illustrator CS5 and Photoshop CS5.

The left side is Illustrator, the right is what happens in Photoshop.

  • Why are my images created in Photshop cs6 blurry when insterted into Premiere Pro

I create beuatiful still images in photoshop CS 6  to use in my videos.  They are high resoultion raw files that are reized to 16x9 ratio.  Once I put them into Premiere Pro they are still fine.  When I place them in my timeline and press play on my sequence they instally become blurry.
    Please advise?

There could be a few things at play here.  But if, as you say, your images go blurry only when you press play, you might take a look at your playback resolution settings.  I'm not sure how the most current release works (I haven't installed it due to the several new bugs posted here), however in recent versions there is a separate quality setting for the program monitor when the video is stopped vs. when it is playing back.

  • Photoshop CS4-Outer glow changes specs (spread, size etc) when dragged into another ps file of similar size

Hello. I'm trying to add an outer glow to multiple photoshop images that have (at least one) of the same file dimensions as the original photoshop file. I'm doing this by dragging/dropping the original file's outer glow into the new files. But the size/spread/etc. of the outer glow changes once in the new file. Trying to automate this process and have to redesign the drop shadow for every batch of images I get. Anyone have any advice on why this is occurring? Or any advice on how to automate if this method does not work? I'm trying to keep the look of the outer glow consistent with every new batch. Thanks for looking! Yea, I know, still working in CS4 unfortunately.

    Try resetting the printer subsystem.

  • Camera RAW 6.2 sharpening isn't used when open with Photoshop CS5.

    Greetings,
Lately I've noticed when I sharpen a photo in Camera RAW 6.2, that sharpening isn't carried over when I open it in Photoshop CS5.  It doesn't mater if I open or open as a Smart Object.
Also, I don't know weather this is associated or not, some adjustments don't appear to take effect.  Color or detail adjustments don't seem to take affect.

  • CS5 - Image set at one size shrinks when dragged into another image?

I have Photoshop CS5 for Windows (just purchased this week). I am working on a school project in which I am editing an image and then dragging it into a calendar.
While working with the original image, I size it to 4.627"w X 4"h. Then when I go to drag it into the calendar layer, which is the same size, it shrinks drastically.
Why is this and how do I stop it?
For one image I was able to move it and it did not change size. But with all the others, I am having this shrinking problem.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!
    Britt

The change in size is due to different resolutions.
You can set resolution in the Image > Image size dialog.
