Raw image size 2.147 Gb?
Hello,
Is there a dng specification raw image size limit? I would like to save huge raw images. We changed the kMaxImageSide from 65000 to 300000. I know the dng's which are bigger then 65000 per size can't be opened in other dng readers. But also if you just have a raw image 30000x30000 it can be bigger then 2.147Gb. It's depends on bits per pixels. For now we have images like 7500 x 60000, but soon we want to save raw images like 7500 x 314169 or better 7500 x 628328. That means for the first image we have raw image data like 4.4Gb and for the other 8.8Gb. Of course this is just possible on a 64bit system.
Is there any plan to support huge raw images (64bit dng sdk)? If so when will you release it?
Best regards,
Marius
For #1, if you look at the image in Bridge you can note the dimensions and resolution...you would then need to put that same resolution in the ACR resolution field.
For #2, no...as you note the ACR Preference controls whether or not Camera Raw will be used to open the image. You can use the Shift key when double clicking in Bridge to open the image directly into Photoshop and bypass the ACR dlog, but Camera Raw will still be used if it's set to be used in the Preferences...
You'll need to keep your image resizing just in Photoshop because Camera Raw is not designed to do that sort of resize/resampling...it's designed first and foremost as a raw processor and later added the ability to open and process camera JPEGs and TIFFs. Putting those kind of controls into Camera Raw wouldn't make sense since the end result of an image opened into Camera Raw is supposed to be an image processed and opened into Photoshop. So, what you are wishing for is really outside of the scope of the development design...sorry.

With Adobe Camera RAW in Photoshop CS2 I can choose what size I want to open an image at from my Canon EOS 1D MKII. This produces a 72Mb file at the highest setting (8-bit).
When I have the same image in Aperture and select edit in external editor, the largest size it produces is 19.8Mb.
Is there a way to get Aperture to out-put the larger files?
Is the Camera RAW size achieved using re-size, adding in data that never existed?david
if i understand your question correctly are you preparing photos to hand over to a graphic artist or a client for their use in brochures etc.
of course a graphic artist will always ask for the highest possible resolution. however do not up-size photos at your end. also it is not a good idea to deliver the actual raw file itself (as you as the photographer should be in control of how the raw-fine tuning is set). the best bet is to send the client a tiff file in 16 bit and let the graphic artist decide if he has to up- or downscale it for whatever they use it for.
also - while everything is printed in cmyk - do not convert your images to cmyk, leave it in your native RGB and let also the graphic artist do this. he knows the exact print details, paper/stock, the printer itself etc etc.
oh - and if you deliver to a client that has no clue, your best bet is to send him a jpg in original camera resolution. to make sure the colours render correctly at his end, you are best of to convert it to srgb and 8 bit and save it as a jpg.
if for whatever reasons the client demands a specific size that is way higher than your native shot (such as for gigantic posters, wallpapers etc), you can use photoshop to a certain degree, however depending on the final size you might want to have a look into specific tools and ps plug-ins that handle up-sizing much better. having said that, this is only for extreme situations, in normal cases, deliver the camera native resolution.
i am a graphic designer myself and while i always ask for the highest resolution, i always mean "at the highest SHOT/native resolution of the camera", not an upscaled version. and i hate it if files are blown-up and in the last minute we have to scale them back down because our client changes his mind. in such cases, the image will loose in quality (again). much better to always start from the native pixels at our end.
hope this helped.

How do I change the JPEG image size in PSE-12 when opening from RAW
Switching from PSE-9 to PSE-12. When a JPEG image is opened RAW in PSE-12 the size is 18.72" Wide x 12.48" high 300 DPI. The same image in PSE-9 is 23.4" wide x 15.6" High 240 DPI. How do I get PSE-12 to open the image as in PSE-9?
Uncheck the boxes at the bottom of the dialog Scale styles and resample Image so that only constrain proportions is checked. If you the change the resolution box from 240 to 300 you will get back to your original dimensions.
This is a meaningless thing to do, you still have the exact same number of pixels, you have only changed the metadata number in the file for ppi, and your prints are not affected by this number.
You could also use the same method to change the dimensions to 6 x 4 or 9 x 6 etc.
There are some cases (actually most cases) where you need to CROP the photo to change the dimensions, when the aspect ratio of the original photos is different than the aspect ratio of the final photo; the specific case in 99jon's example is the only case you ever want to change dimensions using Image->Resize->Image Size, where the aspect ratio doesn't change from 6x4 to 9x6 (or 12x8 or 18x12 or ...), and even then, you could do the same thing simply by telling the printer the size you want, you don't really need to do anything in PSE. -
How set image size open raw file?
How to set image size/resolution when opening a raw file in pse 11 editor??
win 7 pro; pse 11 settings: edit>preferences>print resolution = 337.596, screen resolution 109 dpi( 27 inch, dell U 2711). Originally print resoltuion was set to 240 dpi but was changed in case this was causeing a problem. CRAW v 7.4.0.137
Camera alpha 65, image size is: 6000x3376 dpi; (83.33x46.88 inch)
Problem is: Currently when I edit a RAW file in CRAW and then open in pse editor image size is: 6000x3376 px; 25x14.667 inches at 240 dpi ( by ration this corresponds to:17.773x10 inch at 337.6 dpi)
I am trying to change settings so the raw file opens as: 17.776x10 and anywhere from240 to 337.6 dpi
whatever works or is esiest to set.
My settings are for use in creating blue ray dvd movies and with cropping and editing printing high quality pictures for family.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. That's a Sony Alpha SLT-A65?
Are those pixel dimensions of 6000 x 3376 the size the camera raw files came out of the camera?
You can't really change the resolution that the photoshop elements version of camera raw opens the the files into the pse 11 at.
(i think 240 is the default for most cameras)
You can however set the resolution with Image>Resize>Image Size if you need to for printing or other uses.
In the Image size dialog uncheck Resample Image and enter the resolution. -
Opening jpgs as raw... image size
My office color corrects thousands of images per day for newsprint. These come in mostly as jpgs and some tifs and eps files. Most of these need a lot of color correction work, and I've found that opening jpgs with the RAW dialogue box and tweaking them there can be a huge time-saver (one menu with a bunch of sliders, versus opening curves, shadow highlight, hue/sat, color balance, etc.)
However! There are two things preventing us from utilizing the ability to open jpgs and using the raw dialogue box:
1. Image size. We are dealing with images from several customers who need us to maintain their original image size and dpi, whatever that may be. Other customers want us to maintain the width/height and rasample the image down to 200dpi. (example: take this 3x5" @ 956dpi and make it 3x5" @ 200dpi) If I open one of their images in raw, I don't know what the original width/height were because the file has been resized to whatever I used on the last image. I've noticed it defaults to 240. The original jpg dpi changes with each image we get. Is there any way to make the raw dialogue box not change the image size? Which leads me to...
2. Once I've opened a jpg using the raw dialogue box it will always open up again in raw (always changing the image size.) If I want to just open my jpg as a regular image in photoshop, I have to go to camera raw preferences and disable the ability to use raw on jpgs. Is there a faster way to ignore the raw settings on a jpg once it has been altered as raw?
So this is why we don't use raw, even though it'd be a huge advantage for us to be able to make these color corrections. If anyone has any ideas how to get around these, or even an easier workflow, I'd appreciate it!For #1, if you look at the image in Bridge you can note the dimensions and resolution...you would then need to put that same resolution in the ACR resolution field.
For #2, no...as you note the ACR Preference controls whether or not Camera Raw will be used to open the image. Image Size Bridge vs Camera Raw
When looking at an image in Bridge (Fav Workspace), the size is different that what the same image shows in Camera Raw (blue lettering at bottom of image). I need to submit images of a certain size - which size is correct?
eg: Bridge indicates 480x320 at 180 ppi 50 KB
Camera Raw indicates 480x320 at at 400 ppi .2 MP
My company wants images submitted in "MB" not "KB".480 x 320 pixels is your key here. Multiply them out: 480 x 320 = 153,600 pixels. The "standard" photographic "image size in MB" terminology assumes 3 bytes per pixel (one each for red, green, blue), so that 153,600 pixels x 3 bytes / pixel comes to 460,800 bytes, or roughly 0.5 MB.
If 0.5 MB is too small to meet your company's standards, it sounds like this image is too small for you to use.

Does Web Module size and convert RAW images to jpeg?
I have never used the Web module before. It looks pretty straightforward but I have one question:
What about images? Does Lightroom take the original RAW images from the library that I've chosen to go into the web site and 'pare the down' or re-size them to be appropriate size for the web site and I assume it would also convert them to jpegs in sizes needed for preview and for thumbnails?
I assume that when you start the 'machinery' for Lightroom to build the web site that it will put all of the images needed as copies from the originals into a proper folder that can be then uploaded to the web?
Thanks,
Ken
PS: if I choose a flash template, which are pretty nice, does it also include the flash module so that people can run the flash presentation on their computers? It will convert all images to jpegs, resize ... however you set it up ... and yes, it is so straightforward as it seems to be .
It makes no sense to upload RAW files to the web for public use in the first place. Second, LR does not touch/change the RAW files. Therefore, how would it be able to integrate your dev settings when using RAW on export?
You can add the ftp target in LR and it will upload directly to your web server.
If you choose Flash-based, people need to have the Adobe Flash player installed on their computer. The Flash player itself is not part of the LR setup. Most of people already have it installed and who doesnt will be asked to install it. -
Camera raw reducing image size
All of a sudden Camera Raw is automatically reducing my image sizes. I cannot figure out why. The images were shot with a Nikon 5100 if that has any value.
The original jpg size is 15MB (jpg) and have a NEF extension.
I've tried opening the image in Photoshop and then going through Bridge to Camera Raw, and opening the image through Bridge to Photoshop and the image gets reduced from 16 inches to 5 inches keeping 300 dpi.
Thanks in advance.!The only important “image size” is pixel dimensions.
JPGs have a JPG extension. An NEF extension means it’s a raw file.
Things that affect DPI/PPI and pixel dimensions are in the workflow options link at the bottom of the main ACR window, and only if you output the images to some other format in ACR. -
15MB raw image but only 256x192 size available
I downloaded raw images to aperture 2 before I added raw patch for Canon G10. After downloading RAW patch I can't view these images larger than 256x192 thumbnail size, but file size appears to be 15 MB. Can this be corrected?
Thanks, unfortunately it is not possible to do this since I've already formatted the card. I'm afraid I was hasty more than once during this process (new camera and software update). The only thing that gives me hope for a solution is that the file size indicates that the files are there, and when I use the loupe it only magnifies a small portion of the thumbnail as if it is seeing the image at full size.

Photoshop crashes when opening RAW images
Hello!!
I've been having problems when trying to open RAW images in Photoshop CS5 (it crashes), but not in Lightroom 3 (I have both installed in my computer). My RAW images come from 2 Canon cameras: a EOS 5D Mark II and a Canon G11. Can anyone help me? (below the crash report).

Marcelo,
While Eric Chan or another member of the ACR team will undoubtedly have infinitely more insightful input on your issue, I feel compelled to point out that having two non-identical graphics cards in the same Apple machine is a recipe for guaranteed grief.
Apple's support for multiple, non-identical video cards is simply abysmal.
At the same time, I have to confess that I have no clue as to how one manages to have two cards in a MacBookPro laptop.
I'm completely ignorant when it comes to laptops and iMacs.

When I am opening a .jpg image not an actual raw camera image from Elements 12 it is being opened as a camera Raw image and the image is cropped, I can't find anyway to get the image to uncrop or zoom out so that the entire image is visible so that I can actually edit it to something that is useable. The images were taken with an iPad and copied I suspect using the organizer from Elements 11 but I can't be sure. If I could just uncrop the opened image so that the entire image is visible this would not be a big deal.
Is there a way to uncrop the image that is being opened by Camera Raw? Am I going to have to get my hands on the source of the images (the iPad) and copy the images again using explorer and not let them be copied with the organizer?Uncheck the boxes at the bottom of the dialog Scale styles and resample Image so that only constrain proportions is checked.
Why won't my edited RAW images show after a LR re-install onto a new Hard Drive?
Hi there. Recently my hard drive took a (hike) and crashed - data may or may not be recoverable (Geeks are working on that), and I needed to reinstall my CS5 and Lightroom software to a new hard drive (I had to buy a new one). All of my RAW photos are stored on an external drive and were not harmed, thankfully. Here is my dilemma. Most of the presets I used also went crashing with that hard drive, (yes I believe they were backed up but also on that hard drive...stupid I know-trust me I know!!) but most of them were the free ones from the adobe recommended users on this site. I actually found many of my favorites still posted on the Adobe site and re-downloaded and installed the presets I'd been using the past year and a half, and imade sure those presets were housed properly in their folder via Preferences in Lightroom. Great. I can continue on with my work. WRONG! When I went to go import a recent shoot that I had already edited, it imported the RAW files but none of the previous edits I had worked on for these photos were showing up...it was as if I didn't even touch them and they came right from my camera. What in the world is going on? I'm baffled...and freaking out as I have thousands upon thousands of edited shoots in RAW, and I fear that none of the edits and enhancements made to those photos are going to be present and I'll have to start over. Please tell me that all of my last 2 years of editing photos are still with the RAW files?!!!
I found a deal on a an HP Intell Core i7 processor) 2 TB hard drive tower, so I ended up needing to install the 64 bit versions of CS5 and Lightroom 3.6.
I did test out the RAW (.NEF) file in Photoshop CS5 and my edited RAW image came up "correctly" - so I know that the information is still with the RAW image...I just need it to work and show in lightroom, as it is easier to export the files to the sizes I need them to be.
Please be kind in your replies...I appreciate any help/guidance I can get on this. Plus the photos I need are for Seniors graduating in a few months here so you can imagine the panic mode is just a bit higher than normal. Many thanks. The default location for the backups created by Lightroom on exit is in the same folder as the catalog itself (i.e. that would be on the same faulty drive). It is, however, possible to redirect those backups to a different destination, such as a different hard drive.....but only you know if you did that or not. Do you have any other backups, e.g. drive level backups?
Just to be clear, if you are importing afresh into a new catalog from Raw files that do have XMP sidecar files, you should see the final edited state from the previous catalog, but you won't see the individual history steps that got you there (as that's one of the things that are not included when you write XMP data from within Lightroom). If there is no XMP sidecar, you'll just get the original OOC image. -
Ok.
My workflow is
RAW > Aperture Library > export jpeg high resolution 300 dpi's > one file on PS > edit > Save us jpeg. The I realised that files from PS were being save in a smaller size from the ones exported form Aperture. That is when I went o see <image size> on PS and files were with 72.
Since ten I've trying different things
1. Aperture > export as PSD > open on PS > edit > Save us jpeg = small file (around 15 MB)
2. Aperture > export as jpeg high resolution 300 dpi's > open on PS > CHANGE dpi's to 300 on <image size> edit > Save us jpeg = big file (Huge, actually)
What am I doing wrong? Would someone give me guidance and tell me what is the best workflow, considering I edit photos to deliver to my clients and I shall give them 300 dpi's.
Thank youThis is a known Aperture issue: Problem with Aperture 3.6 preset exports. | Apple Support Communities

Can't locate RAW images in Originals folder
I shoot in RAW+JPEG.
Well, I uploaded two batches of photos (two separate "Events" in iPhoto) a couple of months ago and am now looking to edit them in Lightroom. In iPhoto, these "Events" show both the JPEG and the Nikon RAW image. Each photo is labeled accordingly in the Information box.
However, when I look in the iPhoto Library packages, these two events do not show up in the "Originals" folder. They only show up in the "Modified" folder, and only as JPEGs! Where have my originals gone??
All of my other RAW images are present in the "Originals" folder. It seems as though only my last two uploads are missing.
Help! What you're viewing in iPhoto are jpgs that iPhoto created for viewing the image. You're not looking at the the raw file itself.
To determine if you have any raw files in your library search in spotlight for the extension of your raw files. Like ".cr2" or whatever it is. If you don't get any hits that will indicate that the raw files have been removed from the hard drive.
Are you using a managed or referenced library?
If you're running a reference library is there any chance it could have been a managed library when the raw files were imported. That would explain having the jpg file for viewing and no raw files.
I would also download and use Find Any File to search for the file extension. FAF can search inside packages and areas of the hard drive that spotlight can't.

Hi All-while importing 5d mark II images into LR2 I've noticed they are very soft, almost to the point you think they are out of focus. At first I though it was a camera problem, but after reviewing the forums I see I'm not alone. When using Canon's DPP the images are sharp. While I do notice the colors are off slightly, I am more concerned with the image quality and was wondering if anyone had any ideas. Thanks
Maybe I can provide you with some examples.
I have not noticed any major sharpening differences between DPP and LR 2.4 with 5D MkII images.I have uploaded two example JPEGs, one rendered and converted with DPP 3.5.2.0, the other one rendered and exported with LR 2.4 (without any export sharpening in LR):
1) Image rendered in DPP 3.5.2.0 (21MB)
Default settings
Picture Style "Standard"
Sharpening 3 (Default)
ALO switched off
2) Image rendered in LR 2.4 (18MB)
Camera Calibration "Camera Standard"
Sharpening 25/1.0/25 (Default for Camera Calibration)
No export sharpening
The underlying RAW image can also be downloaded from here (34MB).
There is a slight color shift between the images (due to different rendering parameters as discussed in several threads in this forum), but I cannot see any relevant difference in sharpness.
