RAW images in CS3 won't open

I have just started taking RAW images with my Canon camera. I have several CR2 images on my computer that I would like to open in CS3. I am getting an error message that says "Could not complete your request, because it isn't the right document." Can someone please tell me what I need to change in order to get these pics to open in CS3 so that I can work with them?????
Thanks so much...

Photoshop CS3 uses version 4.x of the Camera Raw plug-in, which opens raw files.
What camera is it?  Is it newer than your version of Photoshop?  Adobe may not have known about the raw format for your camera back then, and they stop updating the Camera Raw plug-in when they do the next major release (which would have been CS4 in your case)
The good news is that prior to that release, they do make updates to the Camera Raw plug-in.  You can find the list of supported cameras (along with a link to download the latest Camera Raw update) here:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4040
Look in the Camera Raw 4.6 ReadMe file for the complete list of supported cameras.

  • Elements 7 & Camera Raw 4.6/CS3 - won't open

    Here's my dilemna:
    1 - click on a RAW/CR2 image file in PSE7
2 - click on Edit --> Edit with Photoshop
3 - File opens in Photoshop as a CR2 file with an "-edited-1" suffix added to the file name (still in CR2 format).
PSE5 Used to open the CR2 file in ACRaw and then hand off to CS3. Somehow, the ACRaw step has gone away with PSE7. ACR still works from Bridge, is installed only once in CS3, etc.
Also, I tried 'downgrading' to ACR 4.5, but the same thing happened (no ACR when going to CS3).
Plus, right clicking on the CR2 image in PSE7 and choosing "FULL EDIT" opens ACR 4.6, which allows me to edit the RAW file - but then hands off to PSE7's full editor (not CS3). Again, ACR is working fine.
Net: somehow the ACR step was lost in the PSE7 handoff to CS3. Any suggestions on how to get it back?
    Thanks,
    A.J.

    A.J.,
I am seeing the same thing you are. It seems that this is new to Photoshop Elements 7 Organizer. All raw files (I have confirmed with .CRW, .CR2, and .NEF} open in Photoshop CS3 with no opportunity to adjust any of the camera raw options. I would assume that the raw file is being processed with some default setting and immediately opening in Photoshop CS3.
If I ask the Photoshop Elements Organizer to do a 'Full Edit' in the Photoshop Elements 7 Editor the Camera Raw window does open.
I would also like to learn how to restore this function.

  • New install of CS3 won't open NEF (Nikon RAW) images

New install of CS3 on my new PC laptop won't open NEF (Nikon RAW) images. Same PC product opens them on my older desktop, and CS5 for MAC opens them on my iMAC.
What am I missing? CS3 has been registered and activated. Thank you

    Hi, Again, John,
I followed the instructions to the letter, and nothing worked. I still got the wrong kind of file message. After I tried to use the plug-in, I could no longre open pages in IE or Firefox. I have to wipe my new computer and reinstall everything. This time, I made CS3 the first thing I installed, and followed the instruction again as follows:
    "Windows
    ®
    1. Exit Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Bridge.
    2. Open My Computer.
    3. Double-click Local Disk (C:).
    4. Navigate to Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats.
    5. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to anot
her location (for example, a new folder on your
desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
    6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, fr
om the download into the same folder as Step 4.
    7. Launch Photoshop CS3 or Adobe Bridge."
Still unable to open RAW images in PS. I did notice that the two files I copied to the desktop folder were the same, although one was slightly larger than the other. I chose to keep both.
Why is CS3 working on my desktop from the same disk with no plu-in, but not on my new laptop? Is it Windows 8.1 instead of XP? That doesn't make much sense. PLEASE help. This is insane.

  • RAW images in Lightroom aren't opening in camera raw in Photoshop.  Instead, I have to open the image in Finder before it will open in Camera Raw in Photoshop.  How can I correct that?

RAW images in Lightroom aren't opening in camera raw in Photoshop.  Instead, I have to open the image in Finder before it will open in Camera Raw in Photoshop.  How can I correct that?

Your question is a little unclear. In a "normal" Lightroom/Photoshop workflow the raw images do not open from Lightroom into Camera Raw. Lightroom has all of the Camera Raw functionality in the develop module. When you choose to open an image in Photoshop, and Lightroom and Photoshop are synchronized (i.e. referencing the same version of Camera Raw) then Camera Raw is simply used to interpret the Lightroom adjustments as the image is transferred to Photoshop. If Camera Raw is an older version then Lightroom offers you the choice to open the image or create a PSD or TIF file that includes all of the Lightroom adjustments. But in either case, opening in Camera Raw is not part of the workflow. It is possible to open the image as a smart object or convert the image to the smart object in Photoshop and then open it in Camera Raw. That is done from within Photoshop or is one of the open options in Lightroom. If you choose to go the smart object route the image first has to be opened in Photoshop and then from there you can open it in Camera Raw.

  • Help! My CS3 won't open RAW files from my Canon EOS 7D..

I have always used Photoshop CS3 - I like it and am quick with it, and I shoot RAW files on Canon EOS.
I don't want to upgrade to CS5, however since upgrading my camera to a 7D, Photoshop will no longer
open my RAW files. I've tried to update plug-ins, I've tried to work through DNG [it won't open those either]
and I've tried for hours on end to get an answer from Adobe on the phone. Nothing is working. Does anyone
have any advice for me please? I'm begining to tear my hair out!! Emma

    Hi,
Are you saying your Ps CS3 won't even open the sample DNG file (/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS3/Samples/Doors.dng)? If that's the case then you need to make sure you have the correct Camera Raw 4 plug-in installed properly.
If it is just DNGs generated from your 7D files, then maybe the DNG Converter options need to be tweaked.

  • Problem with opening raw image in CS3 extended

I just installed my CS3 Extened on my new Windows 8 Desktop and when I tried to open a Nikon raw image I get an error telling me it's the wrong type.  How do I fix this ?  It was working on my Windows 7 computer.

This just started when I installed the CS 3 Extended on my new Windows 8 computer.  It only affects my ability to open Nikon D90 Raw files. Everything else (standard JPG) works fine. I also have NX Capture 2 from Nikon and it opens the RAW files fine.  I also have Adobe elements 9 and it opens the same RAW files without any problems.
The same problem developed when I installed the CS 3 on my HP laptop last year.  It still will not open raw files.
    Thanks

  • Illustrator CS3 won't open EPS.

I have had a problem recently of large EPS files not opening in CS3 on my new work PC.
The following error comes up when I try and open the file:
"Can't open the Illustration. Could not complete the requested operation."
When I click Okay, I'm greeted with either a completely blank page, or a page where some elements are missing - usually embedded images, which are presumably what's causing the problem.
Before you ask, I've tried the following:
Placing the unlinked EPS into a new document - no love.
Placing the EPS in InDesign and exporting - I just get a blank, grey image and a file that won't open.
Opening the EPS in Acrobat - again, no love.
If I PLACE the file in a new document as a LINK, I get a preview image - it's when I try to embed it that it fails.
Now, I'm not after a way to fix my file, because I know it's corrupted and probably can't be saved. What I would like to know is why it keeps happening and how can I stop it?
I've noticed that it happens mainly when I place large image files into a document. I've also noticed, after some testing to try and find a fix, that if I save as an AI file, it opens fine, large images and all.
This kinda doesn't help me, as I need to save EPS files so that the files can be opened in other applications. Unfortunately, not everybody has Illustrator.
My computer is BRAND NEW and it can't simply be a memory issue because I have 8gb of RAM. Full specs are listed below.
I would appreciate an answer to this as it is becoming increasingly frustrating, especially given it never used to happen on my OLD work PC, with the exact same version of Illustrator.
    PC Specs
    Intel Core i7-2600 3.4GHZ
    8GB RAM
    64 bit OS
    Adobe Illustator CS3 (v.13)

Sure it can. AI CS3 is a 32bit app and only uses 2.something GB of memory. Only CS6 is natively 64bit and can use more memory.
You're right, Mylenium. It seems to be a compatibility issue.
I changed Illustrator's compatibility under Properties to an earlier version of Windows, in this case Windows Vista, and it now works fine. Or at least for the moment.
If any more problems arise I'll post them here, but the problems I listed in my previous post are no longer occuring.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Installed 10.6.3 and now Photoshop CS3 won't open

Ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, Photoshop CS3 hasn't been the same. Whether it is the OS or the new drivers to manage my printer and my scanner, I don't know.
Today, I had been working on Photoshop all day and at some point the computer got slow and it told me it had a software update. I decided to save everything I was doing, quit Photoshop and install Mac OS 10.6.3 hoping it was the answer to all the glitches.
Instead, Photoshop won't open at all anymore. I have restarted, shut down, repaired permissions, reinstalled the program, updated everything and it still won't open. It's the only program affected from my design suite as far as I can tell, but it's also the one I use the most!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also happened here with all of my CS3 apps on my Mac Pro. Also, Quark XPress v8.16 exhibited the same crash at startup. *_Not Good_*! Lightroom loaded properly with no issues. Haven't had a chance to run through every app yet, but as a Graphic Designer, those are the ones I need to work. An interesting tidbit was that this did NOT occur on the installs of CS3 and Quark XPress on my MacBook, which also was updated to 10.6.3. Just the Mac Pro.
Re-installed CS3 suite and Quark XPress to no avail. Also cleaned font caches.
I "fixed" this by re-installing Snow Leopard from the DVD which brought me back to 10.6, which just installs over itself, keeping all your apps and settings intact. I then downloaded the older 10.6.2 Combo Update, and installed that, which brought me back to the point I was at prior to 10.6.3. I also ran a software update after the 10.6.2 update, and installed all the found updates EXCEPT for the 10.6.3 update it found.
    No problems as of yet...
I'll report back if any do arise.
My gut feeling is that this is some sort of color profile or font issue.

  • Loss of thumbnails of RAW images in Photoshop prior to opening them in Camera Raw

I recently purchased and started using a Canon EOS 7D Mark II.  I found that with my Photoshop CS6 I was unable to open my RAW files in Camera Raw, so I downloaded an update of Camera Raw, viz. version 8.7.1 from the Adobe website.  Now I can open the RAW images from my new camera in Camera Raw.  However, I have lost the capacity to display a thumbnail image of a RAW file when using the open function of the file drop down menu in Photoshop. Now when I single-click on an ID number of a RAW image from the list of images, I see only a blank thumbnail.  I save lots of time using image thumbnails for selecting images for editing in Camera Raw.  Is there some way to restore the ability to see RAW image thumbnails in Photoshop prior to opening images in Camera Raw?

Which operating system are you using?
Are the blank thumbnails only for the files from the canon EOS 7D Mark II camera?
An alternative is to use Bridge CS6 or Mini Bridge to see the photos before you open them in photoshop cs6.

  • Processing Canon G10 RAW Images in CS3 and Lightroom 2.1

I've not found a post on point. If I've missed one, sorry.
Contemplating getting a G10. After research here's what I understand. Please, correct me if I am wrong:
    1. To process a G10 image in ACR, one has to have 5.2. One cannot use 5.2 in CS3. To process the image in CS3 one has to first convert to DNG. This can be done by way of a separate converter OR in Lightroom 2.1, on import.
    2. Lightroom 2.1 will process the image in either RAW or DNG formats.
So, since I own both Lightroom and CS3 -- I will be able to use ACR in Lightroom if I don't want to convert to DNG first.
    Am I right?
I don't want to buy the camera if I can't use my usual workflow.
    Thanks.
    sjh
PS. I think my CS4 Master Suite will arrive tomorrow. But, there is a lot of odd information about ACR and the G10 out there so I thought I'd take the time to clear it up and see if I got it right.

Lightroom 2.1 does NOT support native files from the G10. LR 2.2, which will be released in December will. So for both programs you need to use the Adobe DNG converter 5.2 to convert to DNG for the time being. It is unclear whether when you have LR 2.2 and CS3 installed whether "Edit in Photoshop" will work correctly with files from cameras such as the G10. It will always work fine if you use dng.

  • CS3 won't open

    Hi
I have had CS4 and CS3 on my intel macpro for a long time now. I use CS3 for scanning purposes only. Today I went to use it and it would not open. Just one little bounce in the dock. I restarted the computer and then reinstalled and it still won't open.
Can anyone give me some advice on how to bring it back?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Photoshop CS3 Won't Open Files in Windows 7 64-bit

    Hi All,
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit on my desktop. When I try to open an image file in Photoshop CS3, the program hangs and never opens it. I have attemped PSD's, JPG's, GIF's and PNG's.
I have right-clicked on the program and selected to run it as an administrator. I have set up a compatibility profile as Windows XP SP3. I have tried both at the same time and there's been no change.
Any thoughts how I can conquer this beast??
    Thanks!

Change the default printer to something local, and that you know is available (either a PDF print, or an attached printer).
The most common cause of this is a remote printer that isn't available, and the driver takes it's sweet time returning.
