RAW images in iPhoto

I have just began shooting in RAW and don't see anyway in iPhoto to convert them. What am I missing?
Is it worth having iPhoto '11 ?

Processing Raw in iPhoto
When you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically creates a jepg preview of the file. Why? Because you cannot do anything with a Raw: you cannot print it, use it a slideshow and so on. However, with this preview you can work with the photo immediately.
You can, however, also process the Raw in iPhoto simply by editing it. The Raw processing engine in iPhoto the same one used in Aperture, but with less fine control. (Think of the differences between Word and TextEdit, iMovie and Final Cut). The output from the processing then replaces the preview. You can choose to save your output as either jpeg or tiff in the iPhoto Preferences.
When you are processing Raw in iPhoto you will see the Raw badge on the bottom of the iPhoto Window

Note: After you have processed a Raw, subsequent edits to the photo are carried out on the processed jpeg (or tiff) not the Raw. If you want to go back to the original then you need to use the Photos -> Reprocess Raw command.
Processing Raw in a 3rd Party Application
You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop. But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:

Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
Now for the kludge:
You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you *must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file*.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.

You'll need to install the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.5 - Search the Support/Downloads site for that.
It still may not work. Iphoto 6 is an elderly piece of software now and predates your camera by several years. If it doesn't work you'll need to update to iPhoto 09 or later.

How do i preserve RAW images in iphoto

I store my Canon Raw images in iphoto.
But when I retrieve them for printing they have turned into jpegs.
How do I turn them back into RAW images so I can play with them?

You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor.
Next, in the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced tab check the box at 'Use Raw when using External Editor'.
Now, when you send a pic to Photoshop it's the Raw that will go there.
*Note: When you've finished processing the Raw you must save it to the desktop and then import it to iPhoto again.*

Cannot view raw images in iphoto 11

Hi there, I have just upgraded to a new imac running Mountain Lion and iphoto 6.
Now I can't view the latest raw images I have taken (on my canon eos 550D) - When I scroll through the images they appear for a second or so, then they disappear and are replaced with empty boxes with dotted lines around the outside, when I double click on them, I get an exclamation mark inside a triangle.
?? Any idea why this is happening? I saw that my camera is one that is supported by iphoto so am confused as to why this is happening.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

RAW IMAGE IN iPHOTO

i have raw image in my iphoto that i would like to drag into adobe or at least on to my desktop, it will not let me do either.
so then i tried to go in to adobe and do file/open but when i choose iPhoto as my option it does not give me my folders in iPhoto or library as an option.
how do i drag raw images out of iPhoto?

true that few applications support RAW. however, recently i purchased an older model Canon digital(G5) that shoots RAW. i used iphoto 6 to import them and when dragged out of iphoto they appear as blank files with labels. i then use photoshop elements 3 to open and resave them as TIFF. i then burn the resave RAW files which are now TIFF files onto a CD(2 copies) and delete everything from iphoto.
the dragged out files carry the .CRW extension not .jpg as for shooting RAW, the current camera(records jpg/RAW/TIFF) i am using isn't supported by iphoto(doesn't import RAW or TIFF) and there is no manufacture support. i have to shoot TIFF files which only image capture can "see" to download.

Help with viewing raw images in iPhoto 6

Hi:
When viewing raw images from my camera (a Canon 20D) in a large or full screen format, after about 5 seconds I see at least a dozen tiny white dots on the image. These occur 100% of the time.
If I "retouch" the image and save it, they go away.
Also, they never appear if I shoot and import JPEGS from the same camera?
Is this a bug in iPhoto 6 and, if not, can someone explain or help me with this?

IMPORTING NEF (RAW) IMAGES INTO iPHOTO 6 FROM NIKON D80

I have just got my self a Nikon D80 and find that I cannon import the NEF(RAW) images into iphoto6 - the files are not recognised - if I shoot in jpeg format it is fine
Bit of a disappointment as I was really excited to see what the ophotos would come out like! I have not imported the software that came with the camera - but I didnt think that was necessary.
Any help gratefully received

What kind of computer do you have? What version of the OS? What version of iPhoto? Have you applied the RAW updates from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads?

Can't transfer RAW images from iPhoto to desktop

Hi,
I have imported RAW photos from my Canon EOS camera into iPhoto. But when I try to drag them over to a folder on my desktop, they atomatially converts to jpeg. How can I import the RAW images to a folder without converting them to jpeg?

You mean "export".
When you import a Raw to iPhoto the app makes a jpeg Preview of the file. When you drag from the iPhoto Window you get that Preview.
To get the Raw you need to export the Original, so select the Pic(s)
File -> Export and in the resulting dialogue set the Kind to Original

How do I Export Raw images from Iphoto to Adobe Photo Elements 4

I recently purchased Photo elements 4 because I could import images from Iphoto in Raw format and work with them. Everything I have read and the instructional video sent to me by Adobe make it look and sound very easy but so far I have had no success.
I have been able to open Bridge and view photos from Iphoto so it seems to me that everything that I have in Iphoto is automatically transfered to Elements 4. However I can not find my Raw images. What am I doing wrong or failing to do and is there some logical sequence that I have to follow to import Raw images.
I am using a Nikon D200 and just to be safe I have been shooting so the images are saved both in JPEG and RAW.

iPhoto and Adobe Bridge are incompatible, so you need to decide which one you want to use (for which photos). iPhoto is a database, with many flexible features for organizing your library and finding your photos. Bridge is a file browser with some organizing capabilities. You absolutely should not use Bridge or any other application (Finder included) to browse the files inside your iPhoto Library folder, as it will damage the iPhoto database. To verify, click on iPhoto's Help and read the section "About using the iPhoto Library."
If you want to keep your RAW files in iPhoto, then you'll need to open them from iPhoto. As Dave E said, this can be done by setting the iPhoto pref to export RAW files. You also need to set PE 4 as the external editor in iPhoto's preferences. With this setup, you can select photos using iPhoto, open the RAW files into PE 4, then edit. Now comes the wrinkle in the workflow. Normally, you would do a Save to cause your edited file to be saved back into the iPhoto library. This Save, not Save As, requires that the filename and extension stay the same. Works great with jpeg files. However, once you edit the RAW, the extension (and file format) must change. Save will not work, because any save at this point is treated like a Save As. So you have to Save As to a folder OUTside of your iPhoto Library, and then import it in as a new file. There will be no link between the edited version and its unedited RAW file. You could organize inside iPhoto to display the edited file beside its original RAW, or keep separate rolls for the originals and edits.
With that in mind, you might not want to save the RAW files in iPhoto at all. You could create your own filing system for them, which you would browse using Bridge. Upload using Image Capture to save your files to a folder of your choice. Once you edit the RAW files and save as another format, you could them import into iPhoto for cataloging or further editing. You'll just have to find the system that works best for you.
BTW, don't save your edited RAW files as Adobe RAW. I tried and discovered that iPhoto refuses to import them at all.

There's no transferring involved at all. Bridge is rooting directly inside the iPhoto Library folder. Did I mention that it's best to avoid this?
However I can not find my Raw images.
When you import a file it is saved into the Originals folder. Your RAW files are there, along with any video clips you may have imported.
iPhoto automatically creates a jpeg version of your RAW files and stores it in the Modified folder. It has to do this in order to display the picture on your screen. With video clips, a jpeg of the first frame is created for display purposes.
I am using a Nikon D200 and just to be safe I have been shooting so the images are saved both in JPEG and RAW.
If you import both versions into iPhoto, then you have
Originals - RAW
Modified - jpeg
Originals - jpeg
(Modified - jpeg - if you edit the jpeg version or if they are auto-rotated to portrait orientation)
I don't shoot in RAW, so I can't really comment about which workflow would be the most efficient. I just played with it long enough to realize that there is no easy way to do it.

Recent issues downloading RAW images to iPhoto from EOS 40D

Hi,
I've been using iPhoto to process RAW images from my EOS 40D for ages without any issues, but I'm now getting an error message saying it can't import the files from the camera as they are in an unknown format. I've reinstalled iPhoto, but no change. I can't recall the last update to iPhoto, but I get the feeling it was fairly recent, and this may coincide with that. Is anyone else having the same problem, or has anyone got any ideas?

As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Poor Quality RAW image in iPhoto

Anyone else having these issues? I'm shooting with the Nikon d70 in RAW mode. In the thumbnail mode the pics look great. When I go into edit mode the quality of the image decreases significantly. No detail in the shadow (blotchy) and it looks posterized. Yet, when I open it in ACS it looks fine.
I've contacted Apple about this a couple of months ago, but nothing's been done.
Just curious if anyone has had poor print results etc.. if dealing with a RAW file in iPhoto.

Hi, Mary. I recall seeing this after I recalibrated the color on my display, some time ago. I thought that would help with the darker color on iPhoto pictures. I went back to the original color profile (in display preferences) and the problem went away. Seems odd that simply changing your color profile would do this, or maybe it was something very specific, like choosing the advanced option or a different white point/gamma value.
I'm not a color expert and this was mostly just experimentation hoping to rid my pictures of the darker tone in iPhoto, so I'm sure I did something iPhoto didn't like. It only happened to my RAW images, I think.

Importing RAW images from iPhoto to Elements 8

I just successfully downloaded Elements 8 (the free trial version). I have an iMac, and until now have used iPhoto for all of my photo file storage and editing needs.
I need to import some of my original RAW files from iPhoto into Elements 8. How is this accomplished?
I got the images I wanted into Elements 8 by selecting all the images I wanted to import, then dragging and dropping. The result? The images all got imported into Elements 8, but they are showing up there as jPegs.
The images were originally brought into iPhoto as RAW files, and I never converted them into jPegs, so they should still be RAW files in iPhoto. Why, then, do they show up in Elements 8 as jPegs? And how do I import directly from iPhoto into Elements 8 and keep the images being imported as RAW files?
Any insights/help would be greatly appreciated.

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.

Raw images on iPhoto for iOS?

Any plans for future versions of iPhoto for iOS to handle raw images?

Thanks for this info, Ralph. I had a suspicion that iPhoto for the iPad would be somewhat limited, much the same way Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are relative to their Mac counterparts. Digital photography is a hobby of mine, and I use Aperture to tweak my RAW photos. Overall, the I've found the iPad is great for showing photos, emailing them, etc., but not ideal for editing or storing.

RAW images on iPhoto to Facebook upload workflow.

Hi! maybe someone can help me out here.
I have iPhoto 7.1.3 with imported RAW images (i shoot RAW with my CANON rebel)
when I drag out images I want to upload to FACEBOOK, (facebook has an iPhoto exporter plugin that doesn't work with newer versions of iPhoto), to convert it to JPGs, they look fine when I preview them on my Mac. they look great.
however, once uploaded using facebooks JAVA photo uploader, all my images look dark, almost has a hint of green shade on it.
I have no idea why this is happening.

You describe the FaceBook file as
colors are bad.
This is because
1. The file has been reduced by Facebook from a *3.3 MB 3,888 x 2,588* image to a *63.6kb 604 x 403* image. About 99% of the file information has been chucked away by FaceBook. The file has been annihilated. There is bound to be a consequence to this amount of compression.
2. As to the colours: The iPhoto file has an Adobe RGB colour sync profile. The FaceBook file has no Colour Sync profile at all.
So, the way the file has been processed by Facebook has wiped about 99% of the data from the file +including the colour management+.
To answer your question from your first post: this is why the pics look disappointing in Facebook. As to what to do about it? Well your first port of call is with FaceBook. You might ask them to leave your photos alone when you upload them.

Importing RAW images into iPhoto

Hi there, I have a macbook with snow leopard running iPhoto 08 and it won't import RAW images from my new Canon T5i. Gets unrecognizable file format error. The T5i is on the Apple list of supported cameras for RAW imports and iPhoto 08 supports RAW (and I checked the RAW box in preferences). Any ideas? thanks!
