RAW Images using Adobe RGB

This appears to not just be an issue with iPhoto but more of the RAW image support in OS X itself.
All RAW images that are opened in preview have the color profile Adobe RGB attached to them - this goes for all RAW images that I export to JPEGs from iPhoto. While this isn't really a problem if I am to keep/view/print images from my MacBook alone - but the colors of my images get messed up when I export some images for my wife to view on her PC - or when I use the Facebook feature of iPhoto to upload images to my Facebook account. The conversion to sRGB makes them look all washed out.
Is there some way to have OS X use a different color profile when processing RAW images... so I know that what it will look like after I make adjustments and export them? Like I say - this isn't an iPhoto issue - but a OS X RAW Image issue... so forgive me if this is not the correct forum.
Cheers!

Thanks TD,
I think that applies to JPEGs that are brought into iPhoto as opposed to RAW images that OS X processes.
I am sure Facebook does process the file somewhat... mostly resizing the image to meet its specs. But as for the color I am sure it is to do with the color profile used. As I a say, the images look the same (washed out) when opened on my wife's PC (or my two PCs for that matter).
I tested this by exporting a RAW image to JPEG in iPhoto... open it in Preview - the color profile used is Adobe RGB (as this is what OS X RAW Processing is using). I apply (convert) to sRGB and the colors become washed out (just as when uploading to Facebook). So it's apparent that it's a Color Profile issue. I just wanted to know if the OS X RAW processing be set to use another Color Profile.... Adobe RGB looks good... but not so great if the file is to be viewed with or exported to sRGB.
Cheers!

  • IPhoto export images w/Adobe RGB

I shoot in RAW (Nikon), import image file to iPhoto, do some minor edits, and export to JPG (max quality) or TIFF. When I open with Preview and do COMMAND-I, I noticed the exported file now has Adobe-RGB as the color space.
How I can export (from iPhoto) to sRGB color space?
Can I convert/re-assign the color space from Adobe-RGB to sRGb in Preview or any other appication?
    Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Where do you export the file to? Are you using iPhoto to do the editing or a 3rd party editor like Photoshop?
Is there a menu option in the camera's settings windows that lets you assign a color profile? If there is what is it set to. Does editing a photo that hasn't come from your camera result in the Adobe RGB profile?
How is your iPhoto Advanced preferences set up?
If it is not checked then check it, import a RAW file, do you edits and check the profile. If it is checked, uncheck it and run the same text.
For photos already edited and exported out of iPhoto you can use this Applescript to losslessly embed the sRGB color profile in the files: *+Embed sRGB Profile-Applescript+*. You can download it from Toad's Cellar. It must be applied to image files outside of iPhoto.

  • Colours wrong when RAW file with Adobe RGB profile printed from iPhoto '08

I've taken some photos on my Nikon D300 with the colourspace set to Adobe RGB. These import and display fine in iPhoto '08 but when printed it looks like the printer (Epson R2400 with the Epson 6.12 driver) is using the sRGB colourspace. The only option I can find relating to colour, is the Color matching dialogue which gives the option of Colorsync or Epson Color Controls. I've tried both with the same results. Preview shows the profile of the .nef file to be Adobe RGB (1998).
Has anyone any ideas of what I need to change?

    AndyMn:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Most inkjet printers are geared for the sRGB profile. The Adobe profile is used by professional printers. Apple's services also recommend the sRGB profile. You need to reassign the sRGB or sRGBIEC1966-2.1 profile. I'm not sure about the raw file but you can use the ColorSync Utility to assign that profile to the file.
I have an Applescript that will apply the profile to files or folder of files dropped on it. I'm not sure if it will work on RAW files but it does on jpgs and tiffs. You can download it from  Toad's Cellar. It takes about 6 seconds per file but does not apply any additional jpeg compression to jpg files.
Assigning the profile is considered better than the Applescript way but can only be done one at a time. You can test each method and see what gives you the best results.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How can I edit a RAW image in Adobe Bridge and/or Photoshop?

Whenever I drag and drop a photo or group of images from iPhoto. it automatically converts them to jpegs. Even when taken as RAW images. With iPhoto 09, you could do a search of the IMG_#### listed in iPhoto, and a normally-hidden folder full of the original downloaded RAW images turned up in the search. Now, in iPhoto 11, the RAW images newly downloaded DO NOT show up in any system searches (using 10.8.4. It was bad enough when they were hidden... now they are virtually gone.
I want to use iPhoto for organization and some editing, but some photos I want to work with in the RAW format and save as TIFFs. How do I do that?

Whenever I drag and drop a photo or group of images from iPhoto. it automatically converts them to jpegs.
Drag and Drop and Media Browsers access the iPhoto Previews only. No conversion, just the previews.
With 10.8 Spotlight no longer searches within packages, that's to protect the inexperienced user from trashing his or her library inadvertently - as directly accessing the file can do.
To use Raws with an external editor:
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
    But there's a kludge here.
iPhoto sends a copy of the file to Photoshop. In the case of a Jpeg you simply save and it all comes back to iPhoto seamlessly. However, if you use a Save As then Photoshop is creating a new file and iPhoto knows nothing about this.
Now here's the catch with Raws. You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.

  • Creating a PDF from an image using Adobe Reader 9.0

Hi, I've converted a bitmap image to Adobe PDF using Adobe Reader 9.0. I was able to open and read the file but not to modify it. The resulting file ended up being password protected. I do not have a password. I am using Adobe Acrobat X. Can you help?

I used an application called Bloomberg (feed with investment info) from where I was offered to convert an image into a PDF to save it. The laptop on that station is loaded with Acrobat Reader 9.0.

  • How to retain zoom position of an image using Adobe Flash Builder?

    Hi,
I have created an Adobe Flash Builder Mobile App. I placed an image in the Homeview. I allow the user to zoom out or zoom in the image using GestureZoom.
The problem is each time the user zooms, it does not retain the previous position.
For ex., If I have a map image, I zoom the Bangalore area. After the zoom, I don't see the Bangalore area in the visible portion of the device screen.
Can anyone help me in this? I feel this is a very basic requirement of zoom but I am missing something really.
I have seen few samples of this requirement in Adobe Flash which does not work for mobile apps.

I don't understand what you mean, but to give you a sample file so you can see what I am talking about:
    link to fla file: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/48932382/Untitled-1.fla
    link to swf file: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/48932382/Untitled-1.swf
As you can see in this file, I am turning the green page, but when you should be seeing behind the page, it's actually transparent and you end up seeing the page underneath it.
Here is a picture of it: (if your wondering, the pages have the same text, it's just the color of the pages are different)

  • Cropping and resizing Images using Adobe Photoshop Elements 12

I am trying to edit pictures for my web site and previously used adobe photo shop 4 which I liked very well. When I try to crop and resize in photoshop 12 have been unable to adjust the images using pixels. As every photo on my website needs to be in pixels then this is a big problem for me! Is there anyway to change the preferences in the settings?  Thanks Tess

  • Has anyone found a way to convert the Canon T4i raw files using Adobe DNG?

I just purchased the Canon T4i and us PE9. PE9 doesn't support the new raw format. I tried using Adobe DNG converter as Adobe recommended. That didn't worl either. Has anyone managed to convert these raw files so that PE9 will recognize them?

    Steve,
Have you tried it or was that just from reading the description?
I noticed that the T4i seems to be omitted from the list shown on the download page and on the readme file. The full list of camera raw files supported does list the T4i as being supported by 7.1
    See http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
I got hold of a sample raw file, which I processed by the DNG converter as was then able to open it in PSE 9. The file properties said that it was from a T4i. It could be that I got hold of an incorrect sample.

  • How to use Sprout to do vector image tracing of jpg images using Adobe Illustrator or Canvas?

How can you project jpg images on the touch screen and trace from them into a vector draw program such as Adobe Illustrator or Canvas?  Can one do such tracing with the magnetic pen on the touch pad.  Can one use the magnetic pen on the touch pad much like a mouse in such programs?
In general how well can one use Sprout with programs like Canvas and Illustrator?

I believe if you export it to wmf or emf you will have a Vector file that can be used in word or powerpoint and can be placed in other programs as can ai files which can be placed in word or powerpoint documents as vector files.
Flash (swf) is another way of saving it and it is also vector.
However even though you say you will never have use for Illustrator which is what I thought in 1995 when I use it to create a logo, I soon found more use for it and every year since have found a project that has rewarded me many times the cost of the application once I had purchased it. Most of which I never thought I had the need for and probably would not have even made the attempt to make the effort and the profit if I did not own the license.
And every time I say to myself what do i have this application for the opportunities arises yet again.
I thought I would share my experience with you.

  • Need help in quantizing an image(using adobe photoshop CS3)

    Hi All,
I am using window and adobe photoshop CS3 extended. I had an image whereby i had already perform histogram equalization. I would like to quantize the image obtained into 2 bits per pixel, per channel. Can anyone advise me? The image is a 24 bit colour BMP file whereby the bit depth is 24 bits. Pls advise.

Hi, I managed to find the refresh cached option. However there is still one thing which i need some clarification on.
The problem for me is to quantize the image into 2 bits per pixel per channel. I understand from the previous post that i need to use posterize and set it to 4. My questions are as follow.
    1) why must the value be 4? if the value is 4 then there should be 8 bits, but my question require a total of 6 bits only
    2) After saving my quantized image, the properties of the image still show me the bit depth being 24, thus is there any where whereby i can check that each color pixel is exactly represented by 2 pixels?
    Hope you can advise. Tks

  • Processing RAW image using Lightroom 3

    Hi,
I am shooting RAW with my Nikon D90. One thing that I am not sure is that, when we first import the pictures to a catalog. Once the import is done, I go the library and click on any of those pictures, I first see the picture looks pretty sharp and bright for 1 to 2 second, but then seem like some preset has applied on top of it and the picture looks different. Anybody know if I can disable any default preset that come with lightroom 3?

  • Camera raw images change colour in adobe bridge

I have photoshop CS4 and import my camera raw images into Adobe Bridge.  When I view the thumbnails in bridge my raw images look vibrant and exactly like they appear on the camera but when I go to open them in camera raw edit they change colour and look washed out before I've made any changes.  Can anyone help me figure out how to correct this?

    ssprengel wrote:
My camera is set to shoot sRGB JPGs and is set to all zeros for the brightness/contrast/saturation parameters.
What is your camera set to as far as these basic toning settings, as well as any automatic things like DLighting or highlight compression and perhaps any custom curves or whatever that is called for Nikons?
First paragraph - so is mine.
Second paragraph - all other settings are neutral/zeroed/turned off, as per my post to which you responded. That is, no additional tone curves - Active D-Lighting turned OFF (why anyone would let the camera decide what to do do with highlights and shadows is beyond my level of trust) , Jpg compression is Optimal (least possible) et cetera.
Think I now have an explanation for the different displays in ACR (and Bridge) that I have been experiencing. Took a new duplicate Jpg/Raw shot with the in-camera Picture Control set to Neutral. Now, when both the Jpg and .NEF Raw are viewed in ACR, with the ACR Camera profile set to Camera Neutral, they appear, ASAICT, identical. Saved Camera Neutral as the default ACR Camera profile. Now back in Bridge, the images also appear pretty much identical.
I think what was happening previously was that I had failed to save Camera Standard in ACR as the default Camera profile, and it was defaulting to Adobe Standard, and hence it was rendering Raw thumbnails for Bridge to that Camera profile - hence the difference in appearance between the Jpg and Raw in Bridge. Unless I have got it completely wrong,  I think my problem is now solved.

  • Is it possible to process raw camera images using PSE 9?

Can someone advise me if it is possible to process camera raw images using Photoshop Elements 9.

That depends. Photoshop Elements 9 is compatible with Camera Raw up to version 6.5. So the files from any camera supported by that version of Camera Raw can be opened. Camera Raw 6.5 is quite old, and a lot of new cameras have been released since then. Newer versions of Camera Raw are required to open those images. But you can download the latest DNG converter and create digital negative copies of raw files from newer cameras. And those DNG files, which contain the raw image data, could be opened with what you have now.
