RAW Imgs not importing into Aperture

I recently downloaded Aperture 3 and the "Apple Pro Training Series - Aperture 3" book to learn how to get the most of this application.  However, as I followed the first lesson in the book it calls for a simulated import of images which includes RAW images.  All of the JPGs are imported but not the RAW files.  I am not new to using photo editing software nor am I new to working with a Mac.  But I do not understand why the RAW files wouldn't import.  Any thoughts?  Am I missin a setting in Aperture 3 that was supposed to be set upon install?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Mike
p.s. I just recently upgraded to ML too.

What were the raw files? Were they from a supported camera?

Were they matching pairs or Raw + JPEG files? If so, they came in but you have only the Jpeg showing perhaps. You need to select the image and choose Set Raw as Original in the context menu.

  • RAW NEF files imported into Aperture from a Nikon D70 are dark

I imported one roll of images straight from the CF card from my Nikon D70 into Aperture.
I also imported them into Nikon PictureProject. (the current application I use)
All the NEF's in Aperture are darker than the NEF's in PictureProject. Has anyone else seen this issue?
Also, any NEF that I have previously edited and saved in Nikon Capture Editor, do not display any of the changes when imported into Aperture. Interesting that the Finder shows the thumbnail correctly. Has anyone else seen this issue?
    Thanks, Scott K.

I've imported a few of the NEF files I've gotten from my D2X, and for the most part, they look fine. A little darker than when displayed in Adobe Bridge and ACR, but not that much darker. This is probably just the way the image converter is interpreting the RAW data. A couple of minor levels adjustments for me, and they look fine.
As for Aperture not "seeing" the changes made to a RAW file in Nikon Capture. That may be due to the way Capture applies its changes to the file. If when you make a change, Capture simply adds the adjustments to a side car file, etc., and doesn't change the original RAW file (which it should never do), then Aperture is only reading the original RAW data. The side car info is not understood by Aperture. At least not now.
This is pretty much the same way ACR works.

  • .CR2 will not import into  iphoto 08 7.1.5

I have a few hundred photos taken by a friend that i am trying to import into my iphoto library.
    Getting an unrecognizable file message.
I shoot on a Canon XSi in RAW and have no issues importing to iphoto, Apature or photoshop....
her images were shot on a Canon TSi in RAW and will not import into any of my programs.

The fact that you can use the Raws from your XSi is of no relevance.
The Raw from every model of camera is different. Note: that's every model not every brand. So, the NEF produced by a Nikon D40 is not the same as the NEF produced by a D60, the CR2 produced by a Canon 350 is not the same as the CR2 produced by a Canon 400.
Changing the Raw specification is one of the ways of upgrading the cameras.
IPhoto and Aperture support -  or don't -  the same cameras.

  • Metadata written in Bridge partly not imported in Aperture

Just bought Aperture and use it on a new MacBookPro 2.4. Started to import a project with files which had metadata ( captions, keywords etc.) written in Adobe Bridge about two years ago. Aperture imported the files but about one third of the pictures does not show captions anymore. Opening the same pictures in Bridge shows that there are still captions and keywords.
    What could be the reason?

Thanks a lot. That was the first post of my life and I got help with a problem which Apple-Professional-Care was not able to give. But I still have a question. I understand that captions in a RAW-file are not imported into the Aperture library. Captions written with Bridge into a JPG-file are imported. Okay so far! But what about TIFF-files (I do not mean the tif-files (CANONS RAW-files of the EOS 1ds) I mean real uncompressed TIFF-files. Why does Aperture import captions of some of those files and others not. For example I have pictures which are just slide variations of a subject, which were taken within seconds of each other and both turned into a TIFF-file and then captioned and keyworded. There was no difference in working with these pictures before they were captioned.
Nevertheless some files were imported with captions and ohters were not.
That makes me a bit reluctand to use Aperture. I scanned more then 20 years of work for the worlds mayor maganzines and have started to caption them two years ago with bridge after trying to caption them with "Fotostation" which was used by STERN-magazine in Germany, my mayor customer at that time. All of a sudden captions written with this software did not show anymore with Photoshop because Adobe changed something with Photoshop. I promised my self never ever to use another software than that of the marketleader to be sure not to do that painstaking work anymore of captioning old stories.
That is why I am hesitating now although I believe Apple -software will not give me the same problems. Most pictureeditors and customers use Photoshop or another Adobe software. So I want to be sure, that my pictures will always be able to show captions in any Adobe software in the future.
What I like with Apple is the lighttable-mode. It is like handling hundreds of slides on my good old fashoned lighttable. Also the vault system is important for me to safe and backup the daily work of my assistant and me in a quick and effortless way. Handling 4 Terrabit of pictures is fifficult and I do not want to loose pictures in the process to organise my files because they were forgotten to be safed.
That was why Aperture was my choice. But I cannot afford to check every imported file and rewrite the missing captions. Storing my pictures as JPGs is not an alternative. I want to keep them as TIFF files after I worked them out.
To ask the question again: What could be the reason that some Tiff files are imported with captions and others, which are just variations and captioned the same way are not?
Thanks a lot for any sugestion!

  • Advice/howto on disorganised photos that need to be imported into Aperture

I have about 5-6 years of photos that are in different folders across my backup hard drives that I want to import into Aperture.
There are many duplicates as I had working folders that I copied periodically onto external drives into dated backup folders. When the working folders filled up, I'd delete older files to make space, knowing that I had the files backed up. I didn't perform any type of file management. Hence the backup folders contain duplicate files.
    i.e.
Feb 03 backup folder contains files for Feb 03
Mar 03 backup folder contains files for Feb 03 and Mar 03
Apr 03 backup folder contains files for Feb 03, Mar 03 and Apr 03
I then run out of room on the working drive, so delete the files from Feb 03 to free space.
May 03 backup folder contains files for Mar 03, Apr 03 and May 03.
I now want to import all the files from the backup folders into Aperture, but know there will be many duplicates. Is there any way I can manage the import such that I prune out duplicates across the folders? Either within Aperture or using an external program/script. These are all original files that have not been edited.
    Thanks,
    Phil B.

    Thanks for the advice.
I actually searched the archives after I asked the question and this comes up a lot.
I'm currently trying MrClean as a solution to delete duplicates first, and if that does not work out, will try Tidy Up!

  • Photostream - do you automatically import into Aperture?

Interested to hear from some advanced and pro Aperture users as to whether or not you have your Photostream automatically import into Aperture, I've done this without putting much thought into it but its led to having many unneccessary photos in my library, plus I import my iPhone photos manually from time to time (paranoid Photostream has missed some I guess).  Thanks.

So should I be assured that no matter what all photos I take on my iPhone are automatically imported and hence I can stop manually importing them from time to time and hence causing more duplicates etc?
I am not sure, if I understand your concern correctly.
When you are taking photos with your iPhone, they will upload to the photo stream and be stored in iCloud.  But you have plenty of time, befor ethey will upload. Photo Stream will only start the upload, when the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi, when the battery is properly charged, and when the camera.app is closed.
Your mac will import the photos only once. when you import from the iPhone and the photos have already been downloaded from the stream, they will not show in the Import panel.

  • Why do some AVI files not import into iMovie?

Some of my AVI video does not import into iMovie. When I try, it gives me a non-specific error message. Is there a way I can import it? Other AVI files import with no problem.

AVI is a container, not a format; the audio and video in an AVI may use any codec, and some codecs can't be used in Mac OS X. Installing Perian may help.

  • Completely auto import into Aperture

    hi,
i'm looking to completely automate the import into aperture...whether i connect my iphone or the sd-card from my nikon, i would
like aperture to open, import the photos into the pre-defined project and then delete the photos, without answering any questions
    from aperture.
currently, i have it set so that aperture opens when things are connected, but the import process doesn't start by itself, etc.
does anyone know if this is possible?
    thanks,
    pete

Aperture has no built-in automatic import. You would have to program an Automator script.
import the photos into the pre-defined project and then delete the photos, without answering any questions
    from aperture.
This is risky - I'd reconsider, Pete. We have seen many cases here, where the import went wrong, and if you delete the originals from the card, before you check them after importing, you may be deleting your only copies.  The recommended way is to wait until the first backup of your photos has been completed, before you delete photos from your card.

  • Lightroom CC 2015 HDR merge not importing into Catalog

When I use the new HDR merge in LR CC 2015, the new xxxxx-HDR.dng image is created but not imported into the catalog. All of the demo videos I've watched show the image being immediately imported into the catalog and visible on the filmstrip. Suggestions? TIA for your help.

Here is a +/- 3 EV HDR that both LR6/ACR9 and PS-HDR Pro do a reasonable job with, where the only adjustments are clicking Auto in LR:
Here are the three images, EV+0, EV-3, EV+3, where to get a reasonable view out the windows, the interior was nearly black and to get a reasonable view of the interior, the windows are nearly white.
Here is a side-by-side of the EV+0 shot with various adjustments applied vs the LR6/ACR9 HDR result with Auto clicked.  Tonally they look similar.  What is better with the LR6/ACR9 version is the view out the windows has more detail and less clipped, and the noise in the darker areas is much better, meaning LR6/ACR9 used more of the brighter image for the floor and more of the darkest image for the view out the windows, which is exactly what HDR is supposed to do:

  • H.264 will not import into DVDSP?

So I have been searching several discussion forums and the question I have seems to pop up in each of them, but is never answered???
Simply put, I have a FCP 6 project sequence that is 720p24frame which is an editing timebase of 59.94 with an aspect ratio of 960by720.
This is an 8.5 minute piece so I know that it will fit onto a regular DVD-R.
So I go through compressor and compress it into both an MPEG2 and H.264 - each at an HD bit rate.
Then I set up an HD project in DVDSP and try to import the two. The MPEG goes in fine and burns with no problems. My BlueRay/HDDVD combo player is on its way in the mail so I can't test it, but it will not play in my SD DVD player. Then I try to import the H.264 - It states something to the effect of not a compatible format....
That is my question - Why will the H.264 not import into an HDDVD project in DVDSP - all of the settings are correct from the initial edit - through compressor - through DVDSP.
Thank you for anyone who can help - we have a large festival coming up that has the option of 35mm or HDDVDs (we cannot afford a print).

    So...this issue is somewhat solved.
I have done several exports using the provided H.264 presets then tweaking them each to my own set specifics. There are four places in the formats sections of compressor that have H.264 as a codec - one of these is for iPod and web so I disregarded that one completely.
I always applied the same settings as to have a control base when doing this experiement - I haven't done a science project in probably 15 years. I also pushed the bit-rates to the highest level.
After many hours in and out of compressor and DVDSP, I found only one of of the presets loaded properly into DVDSP - the 60min under HDDVD H.264 preset (altered to my higher bit-rate)
I am still waiting on my player to try it out, but it did burn fine. This is all so strange since all of my own settings (bit-rate) and other data was constant.
Oh well...at least I've got one test completely burnt.

  • Problems with iTunes 8: NBC .m4v shows will not import into iPhone v2.02

I am a little confused. I have downloaded some NBC shows that are.m4v format, yet they will not import into my iPhone with iTunes 8. I receive the following error msg in iTunes when trying to sync:
Example "Mr. Monk Buys a House" was not copied to the iPhone
because it cannot be played on this iPhone.
Am I doing something wrong? Do I have to convert shows from iTunes to a different format before I can watch them?
PS Same error msg occurs with iTunes Podcast .mov format.
    Any suggestions?
    Txs

Well, after a little research in the iTunes Support Browser, Apple finally made the answer available.
Though Apple designs all products in iTunes to play on iPod type devices, the new HD programming will not.
The programs that are being "given away for free" are being promoted in HD format, and that's where the links on the iTunes page takes you. The iPhone 3G cannot handle HD programming, and thus the error message. (why couldn't they just have said that in the error msg, rather than have me go and look for half an hour. As my mother used to say, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
A couple of pointers for the free, give-away HD shows from NBC (iTunes way of telling NBC welcome back). These will not work on the iPhone 3G v2.02:
Mr. Monk Buys a House (HD)
    Merit Badge: Pilot (HD)
30 Rock: Secrets and Lies (HD)
Battlestar Galactica, Season 4: He That Believeth in Me (HD)
    etc.
Yes, if you look close enough in the show description, they are also making these available free in SD. Hope this research saves somebody a headache from buying the wrong programs.
You're welcome from a friend in Texas!

  • Importing RAW files from iPad into Aperture

    Hello,
While on the go, I used the camera connection kit to import some RAW files (.NEF from a Nikon D300s) into my iPad directly from the SD card. The files where correctly imported, they display perfectly in the iPad screen and I was surprised to see no lagging when zooming such big files.
Now the bad thing. When I got back home I tried to import such files into a new Aperture project. When I connect the iPad to my mac, although it takes some time, all the pictures are correctly displayed, but when I hit the import button, aperture keeps turning the task indicator wheel without ever importing a single picture! Cancelling the import task does not work and the only way to get Aperture to work again is by force quitting it.
    Any ideas?
Ps.: all my software is updated and running the latest versions (Aperture 3, mac OS X 10.6.4, etc)
    Message was edited by: andreambrosio

The reason why the iPad shows the images so quick is because it is not showing the actual raw data like Aperture does. Instead the iPad does the same as the camera does when showing the photo on your LCD. Each RAW file has an embedded JPG preview. The iPad (and your camera) show that preview image. There is no raw processing happening.
Not sure why copying or importing to Aperture causes you trouble. As soon as I plug my iPad into the USB to my PC it shows up as a folder. I can copy the files from there to my computer.

  • Pictures in Idisc not showing up for import into aperture 3

When I attempt to import photos from the Idisc into Aperture the photo are not visible in the import window.  This is also true for a thumbdrive.  I can see them on the Idisc or thumbnail drive if I open the disc or thumb drive and I can open them directly into finder.  Why are they not visible from within Aperture?

Select a button and see if the asset is set to be the video and appropriate timecode where there's actually a picture and not a black screen (depending on what kind of production this is, obviously..)

  • Considering buying aperture.  Have raw images processed in NIK NX2 software.  What happens to those files when imported into Aperture?

Understand NiK is discontinuing Capture NX2.  Therefore would like to buy Aperture as host for image management.  If I do purchase and import RAW files previously processed in NX2 into Aperture.  Is old processing retained?  Doubtful.  Or is new processing required?  Have an iMac with iPhoto 10 etc.

    Richard and Beverly wrote:

You can import the image files converted from RAW and edited by NX2 but they will no longer be RAW NEF files they will be non-lossy TIFF files or lossy JPEG.
Or you can import the original RAW NEF files into Aperture for Aperture to do the RAW conversion.
To my eyes/brain with the Nikon cameras I use (D2x, D100, D5100) I find that NX2 provides the most pleasing RAW conversions, but I still use Aperture for its great workflow.
