RAW(NEF) and Aperture

I'm new to the use of both RAW and Nikon D600. I have been shooting mostly RAW lately. After the image is loaded, is it still a RAW(NEF) file? Because when I  drag an image out to the desktop it takes a .jpeg suffix.
Thanks

Aperture will give you a jpeg when dragging out of the application. If you want to export the RAW file, choose File>Export>Original.
Note: If you are using RAW+JPEG, then you'll want to make sure the RAW file is in front via import settings or set to RAW within the application.

  • Combined raw (nef) and jpegs

By way of introduction, as I am new here, I am a professional photographer in Southampton, England. I shoot just about most things but especially music and other stock, combined with weddings.
I have shot a job using combined raw and jpegs on one card and now want to separate the raw nef from the jpeg version. Is there any way to do this in my Aperture library?
    Thanks!
    Gerry

    Gerry,
One way this works when you have captured from the card or camera, is that the JPEG is not really seen as a separate thumbnail, but is available when you right click or control-click on an image and choose New Version from JPEG Master. Once any are visible, they can be sorted on file size.
One process is nicely described at:

  • Panasonic Raw, DNG, and Aperture

So, I've tried everything I can to get a Panasonic RAW file into aperture without going through ACR and outputting a TIFF. I have tried all DNG converter options (Yes, ALL, in every combination) To no avail.
Here is the interesting part though: Aperture will generate the thumbnail, but when imported it says Image Unsupported. This was even with jpeg preview set to NONE in DNG Converter. SO if Aperture can extrapolate a thumbnail preview, why can't it work with the image?
    Interesting.....
    Dustin.

What would be even better would be support for the
linear conversion that can be embedded in a DNG file
    - that way you could use DNG files converted from
almost any camera under the sun and import them,
    including medium-format backs.
I submitted a request for this and everyone else should too - perhaps then priority for it would increase.
The annoying thing is that Linear DNG is supposed to be the format that ALWAYS works even when other DNG conversions fail. It exists as a fallback, so supporting some DNG files but not Linear RAW is madness.

  • D800's NEF and Aperture 3.3.1

    Hi Everyone,
When I load the NEF from my Nikon D800 in Aperture, I have an black preview of the picture with the message "Image format not supported".
While in theory it should work with versions of softwares installed.
    Mac OS X 10.7.4
    Aperture 3.3.1
I tried to install the "Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 3.13", but during installation, a message tells me I have a newer version already installed.
How could I manage this ?
    Thanks.

Good afternoon everyone! I desperate need a help from someone who can send me or show me where I can download the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.11" ... need the "drive" for the Nikon D800 ... already downloaded the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.12 but it did not work, then i did the OS upgrade to 10.8.2 but it did not work, then i upgraded the apperture to 3.4.1 but....it did not work. I deleted "RawCamera.bundle" and installed the update again "3.12", "3.10", "3.13" but I can not make with the apperture read files from Nikon D800.
My last hope is to get the file Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.11 ... unfortunately he is no longer available for download on apple website (i think)... maybe someone has an address where I can download it or send me it by email ?!

  • Lx3, RAW images and Aperture 3

I recently purchased the legendary lx3, and though I'm quite pleased with the camera I admit being disappointed in the level of distortion in RAW mode. I've read various threads/articles on how the latest version of A3 (which I have btw) corrected the problem so I have to wonder if I'm missing an import setting or something.
    Thanks for your help.
    M

yes I think the LX3 must correct for some of that when your shooting Jpeg's. They must factor it in the processing in camera. Obviously when you shoot RAW that isn't applied. I don't think Aperture has a tool to help you with it but there may be a plug in that might be able to?

  • Sea & Sea DX-2G RAW (DNG) and Aperture 3

Does anyone shoot underwater with a Sea & Sea DX-2G camera? It can capture RAW files in the DNG format and I was wondering if Aperture 3 supports this. The Apple Raw Compatibility page footnotes DNG as supporting "most cameras that can capture DNG".
I am researching underwater solutions and RAW is a requirement for me. Underwater water setups for my DSLR are pricing out from $8,500 and up which is a bit too much until I get good at it.

As I understand it, DNG is the photographic equivalent of a PDF. DNG is supposed to be Adobe standardized, so I can't imagine why it wouldn't work. DNG is a decent format, but I have had some serious artifacts in highlight areas after converting from Canon raw to DNG. Just something to think about. If the camera supports DNG natively, you shouldn't have any problems.
You can read more about DNG and maybe find the compatibility list here: http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/

  • Nikon RAW - NEF and NEF compressed

I have a Nikon D100 with latest updates from Nikon Service Department. I noticed that if I use NEF (RAW) I couldn’t import the photos. If I use Comp. NEF (RAW), everything works just fine. Why is this? Sorry if this has already been discussed, I tried to find some mention in the forum with no results.
    Thanks in advance,
    Hans

Aperture will give you a jpeg when dragging out of the application. If you want to export the RAW file, choose File>Export>Original.
Note: If you are using RAW+JPEG, then you'll want to make sure the RAW file is in front via import settings or set to RAW within the application.

  • RAW image and preview dramatically different

I'm using Aperture 2.1 and am recently finding myself extremely unsatisfied with the rendering of my RAW images created with my Nikon D50.
I am shooting in just RAW (NEF) and sRGB, and am exposing for what I am seeing on the back of my camera. At times I use manual, and others I use the Program setting with a -1.3 exposure compensation since the camera leans too bright; I seem to recall everything exposing correctly until recently. But my memory is shoddy when it comes to how things previously appeared.
The preview before importing shows much the same image that I intended (exposure-wise), as does the quick preview for a second or so during the import process. Shortly after, my pictures all become dull and dark, lacking color and appearing about 2 stops underexposed.
I love photography, but am personally baffled by the issue of color profiles, RAW images JPEG previews, and all that jazz. Nothing seems to explain these adequately, which is why I'm reaching out to those more knowledgeable than me. I am unsure if it's my camera, Aperture, color spaces, or just settings within Aperture or my camera.
Once again, I want to say this is a recent problem, but it may just be that I only noticed recently.

I have exposed to the image on the LCD before and produced wonderful results. Or, at the very least, results that didn't drive me to post on a discussion board.
    As per your questions:
--I use 4 different methods to determine how I am exposing my image. In Manual, I use the TTL metering chart in the viewfinder (usually exposing -0.7 to -1.3 so as to compensate for the tendency for the camera's meter to overexpose), the resulting image on the LCD, the histogram, and the in-camera highlights indicator (since, once again, it has a tendency to try and overexpose an image). In Priority modes, I use the camera's exposure compensation setting to set the compensation to -0.7 or -0.1. The resulting JPEG that I see in the pre-import thumbnails and the brief seconds during import are exactly the exposure I want, but when Aperture finishes importing, it's entirely too underexposed. And it's not just that-- the color seems to be worse than it would if it were just simple underexposure... it all feels grey.
-- I use matrix metering most of the time, with spot metering in the rare instance that requires more precise measurement than just tweaking the aperture or shutter up or down a stop or so. Snow or water pictures are a prime example.
Just so we're clear, I know how to use a camera. I know how to expose properly, and in the past year with my camera, I feel I've figured out its quirks. It takes a lot to drive me to discussion boards, as I usually figure out problems myself. But, since the lingo and strange things of digital photography (Color Space, EXIF data, RAW conversion engines, etc.) confuses me sometimes, I am looking for more human help. I haven't had this problem (or this dramatic of a problem) in the past.
The RAW images outside of the last couple of months seem fine (maybe having something to do with the fact that I upgraded to 2.1 from the 1.0 software about 6 months ago and am finally getting back to photography during my summer break). And the JPEGs that I am apparently exposing for are fine as well. It's just after Aperture imports the RAW file that I am having these problems.
Like I said, I want to continue to use RAW. I want it to work like I thought it was working in the past (that is, without major exposure headaches). But I want the image that I thought I was getting. So how do I make Aperture see the same (or nearly the same) image that I am seeing in the JPEG thumbnail? The difference is just too dramatic to pass it off as quirks and be okay with that. And no, at least as the photography part goes, I do not think it's a short between the floor and the camera.

  • Rate and label both nef and jpg files

Hello everyone, this probably sounds like a silly newbie question, but is there a simple way to rate and label both the nef and jpg files in bridge.
I work on a pc and right now I have to click on the nef file then ctrl click the jpg file then ctrl #(1-9) to rate both. It seems like a lot of work. When I use batch processing to rename my files it processes them both so i get a raw and jpg with the same name, so why not with labels?
I'm trying to create an easy working flow to my folders and pictures. My camera settings are set to raw (nef) and jpg. I like to have access to both incase i need to send out a jpg etc etc.
Can someone point me in the general direction on how to keep my workflow clean and simple and how to affect both files, because this is becoming really tedious!
    Thanks

Well, first of all, it seems to me that you are creating a lot of extra work for yourself by creating your NEF and a JPEG. If any adjustments have to be done then you have to apply to those adjustments to two different images rather than just one. I think it's going a little far, personally, to have a JPEG copy of every image "just in case" you need to send out a JPEG. Why not just create a JPEG from the NEF file when you need one? But it's your workflow and you can do what ever you want.
Yes, I realize my second suggestion didn't solve the problem. But the problem cannot be solved with Bridge, at least the way it is right now. You have to select the images that you want rated. It just seems to me that your are compounding your work by creating both images all the time. If you have a certain need where you need to produce JPEG images in a hurry for someone, I can understand using the feature. But when it is so easy to create JPEG images that have all of the adjustments, I don't understand the need to have a duplicate JPEG of every image. Again, it's your workflow.
You might speed things up a little bit by going into your Bridge preferences and fix it so that you don't have to hold the control key when applying star ratings. Then you can just hit the number and then the arrow keys to move to the next one.
Another very simple method of creating JPEG copies is to use either the Image Processor or Dr. Brown's 1-2-3 processor, which is a free download from his website. Again, I just think you are creating a lot of work for yourself by having JPEG copies of every image. Unless you are an absolute masterful photographer who never has to make any adjustments to your images, you are doubling the amount of postprocessing required. I promise, I won't interfere in this one anymore.

  • Mac mini and Aperture

    Hi!
I would really like to work with RAW-files and Aperture, I have a Nikon d50 SLR.
Will my mac mini be able to handle Aperture? Will it run smooth?

    Hi there Kickfoot
Notwithstanding the minimum specifications, my Mac mini does run "pro" level applications such as Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Final Cut Pro so there is a chance it will run Aperture - however it will NOT be a pleasant experience if my current system performance is anything to go by.
Working with PSD files with multiple layers and FCP rendering takes absolutely ages - you will get very accustomed to seeing the spinning beach ball!
If you can afford it you will need to stump up for a G5 and be wary of the graphics card requirements.

  • Nikon D70 (NEF/RAW), camera adapter and Aperture?

I know that the camera adapter supports NEF (RAW) files, and although can't display them, can move them over to a computer.
So, let's say I have a 60 gig video ipod with a few hundred RAW files that I connect to my G5 after getting back from a trip. Will it trigger my default photo importing app (currently Aperture) when I plug it in? Or is it integrated with iTunes + iPhoto somehow?
    Thanks.

    I'm afraid I can't answer your question.
However, I myself have a Nikon D70 and I'm currently thinking about getting a 5G 60GB iPod (just because my 4G 40 GB isn't supported) and a camera connector in order to store my holiday photos on the iPod. I also prefer to store my pictures in the Nikon "NEF" format. Did you already successful try whether one can really store the NEF files on the 5G iPod?
Please drop me a line on that. I would appreciate that very much!

  • Aperture confuses orf and nef and avi raw files. Suggestions on what to do?

Just used a new Olympus E-M5 in Italy and Germany, after many years of using Nikon products, most recently a D700 with fast glass. I have also used Aperture from version 1.0. Olympus RAW file format is .ORF. As I have uploaded the images into Aperture from the SD cards, I have just found that on one card about 100 files are mis-identified in Aperture's import window as either .NEF or .AVI files, rather than the .ORF files that they are. They are identified as .ORF files on the card itself.
I have not yet imported them and wondered if anyone has any thoughts about the wisdom of: (1) uploading them as they are, as the images seem to be fine; (2) batch changing the file extension to .ORF once they have been imported; (3) trying some variant of drag and drop, or moving the files to a new folder and importing from there; (4) something totally different and better.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
P.S. For those of you tired of tugging around big bodies and fast (and heavy) glass, the move to the E-M5 has been wonderful. Great Zeiss and Leica lenses are available (and much lighter!) and the images are magnificent, though smaller, in the 4/3 format.

How are you imorting from your Olympus? Directly from the camera or from a card reader? With some cameras the results can be different, if imported directly from the camea. If possible, use a card reader.
    My D700 used compact flash, so this SD card has never been in a Nikon camera;
That is not what I meant - I thought that maybe this particular card has a corrupted filesystem and needs reformatting. Can you check with a different card, if all is o.k. for newer photos?
Do you have any thoughts about changing the file extension from .NEF to .ORF?
If it are truely .ORF files, it should not matter, how you call the file. But you need to do it before importing to Aperture. Afterwards renaming may cause Aperture to lose the connection between master and version.
I just made the following test: I renamed a Canon raw file (".CR2") to  Nikon raw (".NEF") in the Finder and reimported the renamed file. In spite of the misleading ,NEF extension, Aperture recognized the file by its attributes as a Canon Raw, as this screenshot ist showing, because of the EXIF, also when I renamed the file to "-ORF"- And the "Raw Fine Tuning" brick shows clearly, that independent of the file name extension the correct raw develepment, that for the Canon EOS will be used.
But the Finder will show the "Kind" of the "NEF" file as "Nikon Electronic Format". So if it bothers you, rename the file.
Have you by any chance set a file renaming preset in the "Import" panel? HAve a look at the "Rename Files" brick in the "Import" panel and check the preset, that is used by going to "Edit".

  • Using the Nikon RAW NEF format and Nikon Capture NX.

This is about using the RAW NEF format in Aperture together with RAW NEF capable editing programs, specifically Nikon Capture NX.
I basically agree with Aperture that it is a "workflow tool" and NOT a photo editor with all the bells and whistles of Photoshop or Nikon Capture. Apple fixed the most basic level of NEF conversion with version 1.1, great!
However, as a workflow tool for RAW images, I cannot seem to figure out how to use RAW (Nikon's NEF) files efficiently with the new Nikon Capture NX.
Nikon Capture NX is quite an interesting alternative to Photoshop. (I cannot wait or the Universal version, as with Photoshop, but that is another matter.) I like the work flow idea it uses, and I like that it edits the RAW NEF files directly, layering the edits on the RAW data. If I open an edited NEF file in Photoshop using the Nikon Plug-in, the result looks great. If I open the same file with Aperture (or using the Adobe RAW plugin) the result is basically an unedited version of the RAW NEF file. This is very disappointing.
It seems I need to export the file from Nikon Capture as a TIFF or JPG. The TIFF gives good results but takes up about 10x more disc space. With the JPG I must give up the 16-bit per channel color depth. Neither allow me to have a "RAW workflow" as advertised by Aperture.
What am I missing? Is this something Apple is going to work on by working more closely with Nikon (and Cannon)? (I figure Nikon keeps their conversion algorithms secret.)
Or are we out of luck here?
    Macbook Pro 17" Mac OS X (10.4.7)
    Macbook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

How do I know? Well if you change the white balance settings in-camera, different numbers come thru in Aperture. But the numbers in Aperture, ACR and the presumed numbers in-camera do not match. I wrote Nikon about this quite a while ago and they wrote back saying we do not know how other people interprete our proprietary WB numbers. See note below for additional insight as how you might look further into it
"The shooting data I referenced is available in Nikon View Browser when viewing your images. Looking at all the images at once, it is easy to compare changes made to the camera by quickly clicking on the separate thumbnails. They displayed the differences I had mentioned before. If you do not already have the software, you can download it here:
Title: Nikon View 6.2.7 Full Version - Windows
    URL: http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=13760&pcreated=1131989543
Nikon Capture will not report a temperature value for White Balance, unless a manual Kelvin setting is selected using the option in the D200. As I mentioned before, Auto White Balance, and other Auto settings in the camera may not deliver a consistent result in a burst or as separate still frames even if the subject has not moved or changed. You have a cast on that one image using Auto White Balance. This is not uncommon, just choose a different value. The value may not even accurately reflect what situation you are in. It may be sunny, and you choose cloudy. The White Balance is not measuring the ambient light, it's used to measure the temperature of the light reflecting off your subject. The closer your subject is to white, the closer the value. This is why a preset is taken with a white or neutral gray card.
Since Auto White Balance covers a wide range of temperature, the exact value is not recorded anywhere that I know of. In addition, all White Balance temperatures are approximate values, as per the manual page 35. Having a cast on an image while using Auto White Balance is very possible, just choose another value more suited to the ambient light.
Set the White Balance to K , and capture an image, and this will be reported by the shooting data in Nikon Capture. I have no idea whether ACR is reporting an accurate value or not, we do not support that software, but check this value against what you see in there software."

    Steven

  • Has anyone had trouble manipulating Nikon D750 raw image (NEF) in Aperture version 3.6 on Yosemite?

Has anyone had trouble manipulating Nikon D750 raw image (NEF) in Aperture (version 3.6 500021000000000.3, Digital Camera RAW 6.0 - Build 761.5, Digital Camera RAW support 6000 - Build 136.1)
I used to be able to manipuplate Nikon Raw (NEF) images from a Nikon D70 and D3200 using Aperture, until the 70 died and the 3200 was stolen about 18 months ago. Recently I did two things: (1) I upgraded OS X to Yosemite and (2) purchased a Nikon D750.  I have successfully imported NEF files from the camera to Aperture, but the images do not render/ cannot be opened/ manipulated. Instead, I see a black thumbnail for each imported image with a cassette recorder play icon in the center of each image.
I can view the NEF image in Finder preview mode, either directly when viewing the images on the camera SD card or after exporting the previously imported NEF image from Aperture to my desktop or user folder.  Previously imported NEF image seem unaffected.
    thanks.
    D.

The current Apple OSX 10.10 Yosemite and the current Aperture version 3.6 do not have support yet for importing Nikon d750 nef/raw files. It usually takes Apple six to eight weeks to release a new digital camera raw update file for new Nikon dslr models. Once that digital camera raw update file is finally released, update your current version of Aperture and that will allow you to import your d750 raw files. In the meantime, you have many workarounds. In my opinion, the easiest is to save images in duplicate nef/raw and jpeg image files to your SD cards.
And for now, just import the jpegs to Aperture 3.6 from your d750.  Process your jpegs in Aperture - and hope your clients are happy with the jpegs and can wait for later nef/raw image processing. Be sure to save and do not erase your original SD cards that include the nef/raw and jpeg files - then when Aperture finally releases a new digital camera raw file update that includes the d750 - just insert your original camera SD cards into the computer platform and import the old d750 nef/raw files and edit/process them.
There are many other ways to proceed in the interim as well. You can always import your d750 nef/raw images into Lightroom (if it has been updated to convert the d750 nef files) and process them there. But for the time being, if you can afford to save and hold onto your original SD cards and wait for the inevitable Aperture digital camera raw update, this is a very easy and simple way to proceed.

  • RAW files and exposure in Aperture

I'm using a Nikon D90 and I shoot RAW/Fine JPG.  Using Aperture 3.4 and OS X 10.8.3, I import my photos into Aperture as RAW/JPG pairs with the RAW file as the master.  I know Aperture quickly imports the imbedded jpg to show the thumbnails and then processes the RAW the file to create a new thumbnail.  I've noticed in most cases, the original imported jpg before processing looks fine, but when the RAW is processed, the image turns considerablly darker so that each picture now needs a boost in exposure.  I try to get the exposure right in the camera, but even when the picture and histogram look fine in the camera, the RAW-processed file in Aperture is always darker.  Is there a way to avoid this and get RAW processed files closer to the jpg's I see in the camera and on the initial import?  Thanks

I've just found a fix, or at least a temporary one until Apple sort Aperture out.
When loading the RAW or NEF file in Aperture, wait for it to over expose the file. Then try this,
1 - click the Adjustments tab on the left of the screen
    2 - click Effects
3 - hover over Quick Fixes
    4 - select either Exposure -1 or Exposure -2
-1 or -2 tends to fix my image depending on how much Aperture blew it out by when I loaded the image. Loading the image in full screen after doing that shows a very minor difference, only just detectable to the eye after a lot of pixel peeping, compared to the file loaded in Preview or iPhoto.
So it seems for whatever reason Aperture is applying too much exposure by default to RAW / NEF files. Not sure how to change this or stop it but it could be a setting hidden somewhere. Obviously you could set up a routine to automatically apply either -1 or -2 to all RAW / NEF files on import if you wished or you can do it manually.
This should help until Apple fix Aperture.
I've also raised an issue with Apple about this to see if they can advise a proper fix.
