RAW / NEF problems

I am using two iMacs latest models (27 inch quad-core i7) with on one iPhoto 09 and on the other iPhoto 11.
On both Macs I cannot copy RAW (NEF) files and even some JPG files to the hard drive.
While viewing the photos still on the memory card does not pose a problem. Within Adobe Bridge I can select the option to open in Camera RAW and this all works fine. Same goes for JPG files. It also opens to Photoshop. I just cannot seem to be able to copy the files to the hard drive.
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “DSC_0004.JPG” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)

Are just some examples to show you that I get those errors with both file types.
The photos were shot with a Nikon D200. Already quite a old model by today standards and as far as I know supported by OSX.
So why can I access the files from the memory card and why can't I copy them to the Hard Drive?
....Most of the photos. While attempting to copy the photos of my sons first birthday (100 JPGs and 100 NEFs) I was able to copy 6 out of the 200 files....

I will format the card.... but I would like to have the photos first. Specially as it is the first birthday of my son. And what struck me was that as long as I try to access them from the card that there is no issue. The issues start as soon as I would like to save them on the hard drive.
** Found that O can open them in Preview and then use Save As... but one by one. This then only goes for the JPGs of course but it is a start. **

Will upgrading elements to a newqer version solve the problem?

  • RAW (NEF) photos from my new Nikon D750 will not open with Photoshop Elements11 Camera RAW.

RAW (NEF) photos from my new Nikon D750 will not open in Camera RAS with Photoshop Elements 11. This has not been a problem with previous Nikon cameras. I'm using a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.9.5. How can I solve this problem?  Thanks.

Aside from upgrading to pse 13, you can use the 8.7.1 adobe dng converter to convert the files to dng copies, which pse 11 should then open.

  • PSE 7 & RAW/NEF for us dummies

While using PSE 7 and my Nikon D40 I had no problem with the program recognizing my RAW files.  When I upgraded to a D90, PSE7 no longer recognized the RAW files. Doing a SEARCH on this forum *technically* showed me the cure. Alas, at times I think instructions are made by techies without a clue how some of us non-techies think.  What I found:
1.)  Go to the Adobe site and download the .zip RAW 5.5 file (I have a 32 bit OS, but they have one for 64 bit too).
2.)  If you have WinXP or better DO NOT open this .zip file in a third party program like WinZip or PKZip, use Windows.
3.)  Once extracted you should have a new desktop file labeled *Camera_Raw_5.5, Double click this file.
4.)  It will open up to a window that has three files in it.  Double click the CameraProfiles.
5.)  You will have a couple of prompts, just click Okay.  Then click Finish.
6.)  You will notice that the Icon for CameraProfiles has changed.  Double Click this new Icon and proceed as in #5.
7.)  Once done (as I understand it) the second file in this folder (Camera Raw 8BI File) is now ready to be installed, but just reduce the size of this whole file, (keep it open though) and slide it to one side of your screen.
8.)  Now open Windows Explorer and Open the Drive that has Program Files.  Open Adobe.  Open PSE7.  Open Plug-ins.  Open File Formats.
9.)  In File Formats, find the file labeled *Camera Raw 8BI File* and Right Click it.  Open *Send To* and highlight Send to Desktop in New File.
10.)  Now, in Step #7 above you have a reduced box with the NEW Camera Raw file, highlight and drag it into the Windows Explorer Box where you just send a Copy to the Desktop.  You will be promted, There is already a file named this, do you want to replace it...YES replace the old file.
Shut all these programs down and go load RAW/NEF files using PSE7 :-)
I hope this is of help to those who are having problems (like me...errrrggggg, should have been easier).

I have to quibble with a few of these.
#1. The Adobe Camera Raw 5.5 plugin for PSE is located here. (Would have been nice in your instructions for Dummies to include the proper link) There is no 64 bit version of the download file.
#2 is wrong. WinZip works fine in this situation.
    # 9. The instructions from Adobe ask you to "move" the Camera Raw.8bi file, not send it to another location. When you use "Send To", a copy remains in the File Formats folder, and this has been known to cause problems.

  • Importing Nikon RAW .nef files into iPhoto

I am using iPhoto 8.0.3. I can import RAW .nef files from my D90 without a problem. I also scan my older slides/negs using a CoolScan V and saving those files as RAW .nef format. Problem is that iPhoto does not recognize the .nef files that are scanned. Anybody have some thoughts? I can convert the scanned files into jpg using Nikon View and then bring them in to iPhoto, but would prefer to leave them in the RAW format so I don't have replicant files all over the place.

iPhoto will only work with RAW files on this list

Unfortunately there are no Scanners on the list.

  • Nikon RAW NEF files have white balance blown out (iPhoto 7.1.4)

I had no problems opening my Nikon D200 RAW NEF files in iPhoto until about a month ago. I think I downloaded a patch for compatibility of camera files? After that when ever I open A raw file, the colors and white balance are blown out.

I was unable to get my images to appear as I shot them. I shoot with a Nikon D80 and shoot with a Vivid setting. Now after shooting a wedding of more than 1500 images I have to find a way to color correct them all. I have attempted the downgrade to the previous version, unsuccessful. I have forwarded on my comments to apple and find that this issue effects tens of thousands of photos. As a MFA student at a major university, and studying color management and workflow, I feel I need to look elsewhere for file management as iPhoto is not able to do the job and the fact that it affects my entire library system of photos... simply unacceptable. I have always found the discussion groups extremely helpful, but this issue has effected so many of us and is such a huge integral part of the photographic process that I need to look to other programs to effectively handle my color management.
    Disappointing.

The above list show the current camera models supported by Adobe Camera Raw (plugin for PS CC) and Lightroom 5.3.
You will see that the Df Raw support was provided in the latest version of LR 5.3.   Support for the D300s was introduced in LR 2.5. (the NEF files are different.)
Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw can only be updated after the camera manufacturer has produced the camera and made it publicly available. If you are using an earlier version of Lightroom then that is your problem.
Please post details of the version you are using at present.

  • Raw conversion problem

I have Photoshop Elements 6 (Camera Raw 4.2) and a Nikon D7000 (Camera Raw 6.3 minimum).  I am using DNG converter 8.1 to create DNG files, but these still will not open in Elements.  I am selecting compatibility of Camera Raw 4.1 in the conversion program.  What else can I do?

Sorry it took me a long time to reply.  If I send to dropbox (which I can), can I restrict the images to specific email addresses, or will it be accessible to anyone?  Not that I care about the image particularly, as it was only a test.
Once I have an idea of this, I will do a final test & send the data to dropbox.

It seems like you're doing everything that you're supposed to be doing, and it is not working.  I don't have an explanation why that is, but can you share an original NEF and its DNG via www.dropbox.com or similar and others can test with a newer version of ACR to make sure there isn't something corrupted wtih the files.

  • Import of RAW (nef) from camera to organiser

I have been using PSE7 and PSE8 for a long time without problems. Now I have installed the PSE9 and as usually I wanted to import my raw(nef) photos directly from the camera to the organiser, but this was not possible, it says: unsupported file format.
I have downloaded a camera raw plug-in, but this did not help the problem.
Can ony one suggest a solution?
    Happy new year form Denmark.

You may want to un-install and re-install again, but delete the plug-ins folder in Common Files before starting.
With PSE9 there is no need to update to ACR 6.3 manually. Simply click Help >Updates
    Everything will be done automatically.

  • My RAW(.NEF) files not rendered in A3

i have a Nikon D700 & Aperture 3.1.2    i am new to aperture.  when i imported my files from my hard disk(i don't use iPhoto) my TIF & JPG files are rendered buy my RAW(.NEF) files are not.  says "unsupported image format"   but, in aperture help it says the D700 & .NEF are supported.  anyone have any idea what's going on and what can i do?  i have "Lion" OS.
    Mike

The fact that Preview also is not able to render the RAW file but that Capture NX can really points to a RawCamera.bundle problem.
Both Aperture and Preview as well as iPhoto and any other OS application that processes RAW file all use the same code provide by the OS (the RawCamera.bundle). Third party software like Capture NX provide there own RAW code.
Since rolling back the RawCamera.bundle to 3.7 have you tried to re-import any of the RAW files that are currently failing? Or you can try importing a new RAW file from your camera.
I wish I had more to offer you but if rolling back the RawCamera.bundle to 3.7 isn't fixing the issue I'm not sure what else to recommend.
Of course you should  run the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics steps just to rule that out if you haven't already done so.
    good luck

  • Raw + JPEG problem

When I set my Nikon D50 to Raw + JPEG the JPEG files will not show up in Import only the RAW (NEF) files do. I have to move the JPEG files to another folder for Aperture Import to recognize them. If the Raw and JPEG files remain in the same folder than only the Raw files are recognized. Has anyone else had this problem?

In the german speaking forum www.apertureforum.de the same situation was asked (if I understood you right): http://www.apertureforum.de/viewtopic.php?t=99&highlight=raw+jpg
Select the imported picture an select "New Version From Master JPG" (Alt-J)
    Does that work for you?

  • How to Install Plug-in for PS cs5 to open RAW (.NEF) file for Nikon D810 Camera

I need someone to walk me through how to install a Plug-in for PS cs5 to open RAW (.NEF) file for Nikon D810 Camera.
I haven't used photoshop in ages and I got a new camera. I have been on the phone with Adobe (no help) and spent a couple of hours online trying to figure this out. I'm confused, frustrated and about to throw my computer out the window.
Also, I placed this in the "Photoshop for Beginners" since Photoshop CS5 doesn't appear anymore. I know CS5 is outdated but I spent hundreds of dollars on this program and you would think adobe would still honor its product.
    Any guidance is much appreciated.
    AJ

Odds are cs5 is too old. If you do a search on my the main Adobe website there is a list of compatible cameras for the last known update to camera raw for cs5.
Each version of Photoshop only gets so many updates for camera raw then it is necessary to upgrade Photoshop to get the next update for camera raw.
So you currently have 4 choices.
    1 upgrade Photoshop
2 get Lightroom - latest version
3 get Photoshop elements -latest version
4 get dng converter - this will download the latest version an is the only option that is free.
The dng converter can be found by searching Adobe website.

  • Photoshop CS2 RAW (NEF) Issue

    Hi,
My RAW (.NEF) files will not open in Photoshop CS2. Everytime I try to open a raw image it says...
"Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file"
Don't know what to do. CS2 on OSX 10.5.8 with Nikon D90 photos.
I'm going to take a guess here and it has something to do with the Nikon software provided to transfer the photos from the camera/sdhc card?
I'm assuming the software (Nikon Transfer/ViewNX) has overwritten some Adobe plugin or driver?
Anyways, someone please help! I need to edit my photos and this is a pain in the A!
    Thanks
    Cheers
    Mike

Your camera needs the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in version 4.6 or 5.xx.
Neither will work with CS2 – you need to upgrade Photoshop or use the DNG converter.
    Get it here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4619

  • Exported masters (RAW nefs) have been lost

Hi there, hoping you might be able to help.
I use Aperture everyday to organise my photo workload as referenced files - storing the original RAW nefs in Pictures, I stress I am a basic user.
After star rating a batch of approx. 500 photos I wanted to edit I decided to make a new folder in Pictures for them by exporting the originals.
Aperture did the exporting thing and then showed up an error message that the export had failed.
So I assumed the originals would not have been moved and found when looking in the original Pictures folder that they were not there anymore. The Aperture previews are showing up the yellow triangle that the master file is missing. I have searched by date and name but think they have all been lost.
I have tried the drill disk software which found the files so I happily paid the upgrade fee to recover them.
Once recovered I could see the files in Aperture again without the yellow triangle this time, but when try exporting then they are sadly all corrupted.
I know I can try rebuilding the Aperture database but thought I should seek help first on what I should try next.
I have the original flash cards with half the images on which is good, but the other half were on a card I have since reformatted and used for other jobs.
Learning the hard way that I really should be backing up!
    Thank you

Just to clarify, I imported 2000 masters, I edited them a week later (this beng last Friday) getting approx. 500 ready for export.
After the export failed the other 1500 masters were still in the original location - as they still are now.
I don't see how only the 500 that I chose to edit could have been missing before I performed the export - that doesnt make any sense. The 500 images I exported are exactly the files that have been lost.
Sadly I can't re-import all the masters. They were shot on 2 x CF cards and I only have one available.
I have reimported the ones I do have and spent the afternoon relocating the referenced files. So thankfully I have some back but not all.
I suppose if I had them all I wouldn't be needing to ask for help here
The 'reprocess original' command is greyed out for the files still left with a yellow triangle, so I guess as the master really has been lost this isn't an option either.
I am stumped and really quite worried about Aperture now, its bee a fantastic application for me over the past 18 months but has sadly resulted in a big disappointment.
The discussion on Aperture Expert that I have been having the last few days seems to confirm that this is a confirmed bug by Apple - gutted to say the least.
Many thanks for your input though Leonie, anything else you can suggest as I am almost all out!

  • Raw/nef not visible in organiser

    Hi,
I just upgraded from Elemets 7 to Elements 10 (since Win 7 and Elements 7 are not fully compatible). I installed full version Elements 10 and updated this directly, ADR 6.7 is installed.
In the organiser the raw/nef (Nikon D5000) are not visible, the pics are show as errors (broken files), all jpg and psd are shown correctly. Opening a raw/nef in the editor and ACR there is no issue, picture is perfectly visible.
What do I need to do to have the raw/nef visible in the organiser?
    Regards,
