RAW + Olympus =/= iPhoto 6?

I have an Olympus E400 (european release only) but the same as an E410 AFAIK, and OS X sees the DSLR and .ORF files but iPhoto can't import them - any fix for this?

Yeah and I'm supposed to believe that Olympus changes the contents of its raw files from camera to camera?
Do you really that a range of cameras that use different hardware and software produce the same RAW files? Do you think all the Canon or Nikon cameras all produce the same RAW format. Read around a bit, you may be surprised.
If that was true how come the thumbnails are displayed correctly?
Many RAW formats carry a jepg thumbnail preview. I don't know about your camera, but that would be my guess, especially since neither iPhoto nor Preview can, as you say, "see into the files". If they can't, then they would have no way of generating the thumb, ergo the camera must have done it.
Secondly since Olympus doesn't make professional imaging editing software why would they block raw files?
It's not a question of blocking, it's a question of sharing. Why they haven't chosen to facilitate their Mac users in the same way that they have their Windows users is, simply, a question for Olympus.
And yes, you are right, it is annoying, but if you want things changed, best to focus on the people who can make the changes.

Raw in iphoto

I read that you can open raw files in iphoto and seached for compatible cameras. To my surprise I saw that the olympus e1, e300 and e500 are not supported. What's up. Is it that olympus don't want us using iphoto and use their viewer instead? Is there any way my raw pics can be put as raw on iphoto? I tried a card viewer but that only made a jpeg from my raw pic. Help please

I should have been more clear. Importing from the camera or a reader is the same. If the camera is not supported, it won't work from either as its the RAW file format that determines compatibility. If the RAW files imported into iPhoto the format is supported and you will now have an iPhoto generated JPEG for each RAW file imported.
If you double click on a thumbnail, it will open in edit mode (or an external editor if configured to do so) in its JPEG form.
To edit the RAW file you need to drag the thumbnail into your favorite RAW editor and save that converted file in your choice of format outside of the iPhoto library.
If you double click an image and then want your RAW file back to drop into a RAW editor, you need to select the thumbnail, right/control click, and select "Revert to Original".
Also, I believe the E1's RAW format is supported since the 10.4.3 update.

Workflow with RAW files iPhoto iOS

I shoot in Nikon RAW (.nef) and want to use my camera connection kit and new iPad to do a first pass on editing/deleting photos before I pass them to my Mac. I tried shooting a few photos in raw and then edited them but when I sent them via the "Send to iTunes" feature in iOS iPhoto they only sent a small JPG version of the photo. What I like to happen is the RAW file sent with editted embeded JPG. What process/workflow should I take so I don't get a bunch of duplicates (RAW + JPG) files?
Any best practice appreciated. I find that using iPhoto iOS is a more intuitive approach to first pass editing/deleting sort of like a cutting board.

iPhoto for iOS does not edit RAW files. When it encounters a RAW file iPhoto for iOS works only with the embedded jpg. If you only shoot RAW the embedded jog is a very small file.
My suggestion is to keep your photos on your camera's card. You an copy them to you iPad for a look see and decide which you might not want to keep but I'd do all my editing on the Mac side for those RAW files.

Can't edit RAW in iPhoto - grayed out

My system recently crashed and after installing a new hard drive and reinstalling programs I find that I can no longer edit RAW pictures within iPhoto. I see both the RAW and the jpg thumbnails (I shot in both formats side by side) in iPhoto. When I click on the jpg it allows me to edit. When I click on the RAW it will not allow me to edit. I can click the Edit button but once on the crop, enhance, rotate adjust page all options are grayed out. Prior to the crash I could edit RAW in iPhoto - I want to get back to that. I can edit RAW in an external editor but want to do it in iPhoto. Using a Nikon D90. A secondary issue if you care to comment.... all thumbnails are in place when I reinstalled the program however the jpgs are only place holders. When I click on the thumbnail I get the dread exclamation mark. I have to go hunting for the file in the "Show Package Contents" command. The RAW thumbnails will allow me to explore in an external editor (see above) but I cannot edit in iPhoto. Thanks, Craig

Your Library is corrupted. That's what you need to sort out.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

HT5182 Raw and Iphoto

I have just purchased a Fuji X10 and shooting in Raw they come up in iPhoto with the dreaded ! mark, what is the problem. they also will not go into Aperture.
I have never had a problem shooting Raw with Nikon, they transfer in ok, I have had to delete a lot of photos because of the ! problem, it looks like there is a
problem with Raw and Iphoto, can anyone help me.

You might want to Google on RAW. There’s a wealth of learning to be done on the subject. Here’s a pencil sketch.
You can only do one thing with RAW files, and that’s process them. RAW is not like other files. It’s a dump from the sensor on the camera. In the more common Point and Shoot cameras when you take a pic the camera processes the sensor dump by a predefined set of rules and saves the result as a JPEG.
What you’re now doing is creating your own set of rules for each pic. This is what you do when you edit the pic in iPhoto. The tools for doing this are on the Adjust pane.
You’re not seeing the RAW in the camera. Your seeing a jpeg preview.
As to colour matching, what colour profile have the pics and does it match what‘s on your printer?

The RAW support for the Camera is built on Mt. Lion, see:
OS X Mountain Lion: Supported digital camera RAW formats - Apple Support
and requires *Aperture version 3.4.5 or later, or iPhoto version 9.4.3 or later. You'll need at least to upgrade to Lion, to be able to run these versions of iPhoto or Aperture.
How about installing a newer MacOS X version on a separate disk? This way you can keep Rosetta, but upgrade your photo library to a newer MacoS X version?

Anyone using RAW in iPhoto?

I am considering shooting more in RAW and wondered about iPhoto's RAW capabilities. I know iPhoto can handle RAW images, but with concessions (that I can't quite understand.) I do own Aperture, but have been slightly intimidated by it and wanted to hear from some other people before I dive in. Any advice/suggestions would be much appreciated.

I use iPhoto with Nikon .NEF rawfiles, and I have been very happy with how it works.
Basically, your RAW file stays as the "original" in iPhoto, but a jpeg version is created when you import. (Importing is much slower for RAW than for JPG -- each shot can take several seconds on my core 2 duo iMac.) I find the performance (in terms of quality of outcome) much better in RAW when doing whitebalance, sharpness, and contrast adjustments. (This makes sense: these are all parameters in the RAW processing rather than physical adjustments to the photo-taking process. I am not positive that iPhoto really reprocesses with the new parameters, but my qualitative impression is that the performance is better!) Otherwise, there aren't too many practical differences.
On the downside of shooting RAWs, your iPhoto library can become quite large (and your camera memory quite "small") if you're shooting files that are 3+ times as large -- plus most cameras have slower burst rates when taking RAW than JPG shots due to the time needed to flush the memory buffer to SD or CF card. (Also, there's the slower import times as mentioned above.)
I believe Aperture has many more photo adjustments available, but I think these are equally available for RAW and JPG. It may have a "higher quality" algorithm for processing RAW files, but then again I thought these algorithms were part of OS X rather than iPhoto, and I'd be surprised if Apple maintains two sets of RAW processing algorithms (particularly given the number of different RAW formats supported). RAW in iPhoto vs Aperature

Hi,
I am a newbie to using RAW (new Olympus e520) and use iPhoto 09 in OS 10.5.6. I generally like my pictures from iPhoto (after I tweek them a bit) but am contemplating Aperture. Indeed I like the results I get from iPhoto better than what I can get using the latest Adobe RAW (via Elements 6) even though it has a nice interface. The iPhoto renderings seem just a bit better to me.
My question is: is the RAW rendering afforded by Aperture significantly different/better than that in iPhoto? I.e., is the RAW rendering a function of the OS or the specific program? In the Mac world this is not so clear. I'd download the Aperture trial but I tried Aperture some time ago (in the v 1.0 age) and did not like it. So I cannot now use a trial of the new version, alas.
Pardon if this has been discussed before but I could not see it.
I enjoy learning from these boards, thanks in advance.

First of all congratulations on purchasing an Olympus E520. You will simply love the Olympus DSLR cameras. I have a been a long time user Aperture and the new version Aperture 2.2 is simply superior to the initial version of Aperture. I shoot everything in RAW, and I find the ability to work with the photo's in a non-destructive format, amazing. You can't underestimate the value of not impacting your original RAW image. After all, that is why you shoot in RAW in the first place.
I have found the interface much easier in Aperture 2.2 and it is really worth the money. I have just purchased an Olympus E-30 so I am still awaiting for a RAW format capability for Aperture.
I understand your concerns about the previous version of Aperture, but one of the best features is that you can store your Aperture library and therefore referenced pictures on an external drive. This was not available in version 1.1.
For my money, Aperture is head-and-shoulders above everything else, and I have tried them all, Adobe Element, Olympus Studio, Capture One, and several others.

RAW Olympus e-620 support, when?

I have purchased the camera, and the RAW is not available Through Apple for iPhoto for instance. When will this be available?

It's good to know that this works. I have yet to try it, or even decide whether or not ever to try it, as I am so very disappointed with the lack of support for the Olympus E-3 .ORF files in the latest OS X update as well as A2, and am really feeling pushed by Apple toward Adobe. I don't want to go there (other than to continue with my long-standing use of Photoshop), but I also really don't want to add another step (conversion to .DNG) to my workflow, so I haven't even downloaded the A2 trial. The .DNG stuff really feels like being relegated to less than equal, second-class status when it comes to obtaining the very best possible image quality from native RAW files. Maybe I just don't understand .DNG very well; I'd welcome further enlightenment in this area. It seems sadly ironic to me that to get any sort of RAW file access in A2 right now, I'd have to use an Adobe product (the free .DNG converter), but if I went to A2's Adobe competitor, my Olympus E-3 .ORFs would be handled natively. This just seems crazy to me.

Raw files - iPhoto and Photoshop Elements

I am shooting raw files on a Canon 400D. They upload into iPhoto 6.0.6 ok but I can't open them in PE4.0.1 for editing. I can drag the .CR2 file onto the desktop but PE doesn't recognise it. Am I missing something or am I going about this the wrong way? So far as I can see, iPhoto and PE should both recognise .CR2 files.

Also, you will need a more up to date version of ACR than the one that shipped with PE 4. Go to adobe's site and download the next-to-latest version of ACR (some problems with ACR 4.4 so I'd hold off on that and get 4.3.1):

RAW and Iphoto 09 help?

I recently purchased my first camera that uses RAW and I have read that Iphoto 09 helps with the RAW process. My problem is printing the pictures I have taken. I had my camera on Jpeg and tried to print but the pictures were grayer then a normal pic. I recently changed my cameras settings to RAW, so now Iphoto takes 2 images (as I read it should). So how can I print a picture from the camera in Jpeg or Raw the way I see it on screen? Do I need use another program like Apeture (plan to buy when I have the $), I have Photoshop CS, but I use that for edits mainly. I am looking for a simple way to print these nice pics. When I would "edit" the Jpeg pic in Iphoto it turns out nothing like I want on screen, since the original pic is what I want to print anyway. I tried "help" in Iphoto but was not really much help.
This whole Raw thing is new to me and I want to use it in the best way, like I use Final Cut.
Any help would be great!

Raw in iphoto 6.05 indication?

I recently downloaded vs 6.05. What happened to the designation RAW at the bottom of the window which I always got before? "The first time you edit a RAW-format photo in the main iPhoto window, the RAW badge appears at the bottom of the window." ( From Help)
I also noted that under "Photos" in the pull down it now says "Reprocess Raw". Anything changes?

RAW and iPhoto 6

Recently I have this problem that some (not even all from the same CF card) stored RAW images in iPhoto 6 shows in the software as RAW but when I am moving them to a folder on my desktop to process in Photoshop they have changed to jpg without my involvement. I am then unable to use the RAW adventages. Any ideas on what's going on?

iPhoto converts RAW images when dragging out of the iPhoto browser into the Finder, by default. You can get the original RAW images by dragging the photos with the Option key held down.
I think if you opt to use RAW with external editors (Advanced prefs) this behavior changes and you can drag RAW out directly, or option-drag a JPEG. Not 100% sure of this part, but Option-dragging the photo(s) in your case should work.

Open photo in Camera Raw from iPhoto 08

Can anyone advise me on how I would open into Camera Raw (Adobe PhotoShop CS3) from iPhoto 08? If I open directly, i.e., double clicking, the photo becomes a jpeg. How do I get it to stay "Raw?" Thanks.

Set photoshop as the external editor in the iPhoto preferences and set the advanced preference to Use RAW when editing in external editor

Is there a simple work flow?

No. When iPhoto imports a raw file into the library it creates a jpeg version for display and use in other apps. The raw is used only for editing which will create a jpeg file.
If you use an external editor to edit the raw files you must save the edited version to the Desktop and import it as a new image file. If you edit with iPhoto just edit normally.
