PSE 8    How do save a raw photo too JPEG

If you just want a JEPG:
1. Export through PSE-Organizer File>Export and have a JPEG, In this case you need to reimport the file into Organizer
2. Open the file in Editor and Save as JPEG.

  • How good is RAW photo editing in iPhoto '08?

Can it compete in any way with Aperture? Is it worth it? I was settled on Aperture until this came out. It has some feaures that make it seem a little Aperture-ish, or Aperture-lite.
I don't do much RAW editing, but I up the saturation, play a little with contrast, batch-adjust white balance sometimes with the eyedropper and/or lift and stamp (this could be a deal breaker)...stuff like that.
Is the editing intuitive? Is the quality good? Is it worth it? I didn't like the editing of RAW in iPhoto '06, by the way...
PS: do I break the terms of agreement if I post a similar question in the Aperture boards?
    -Scott

    Scott:
Unless you have an external editor that you use for RAW editing, I believe iPhoto creates a jpg version of the RAW file on import that that's what you'd be editing. iPhoto 7's editing tools have been improved over V6 but I have no experience with Aperture. I believe it saves edits in tiff format.
Posting in the Aperture forum would be acceptable.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Raw Photo Editing

I am new to Raw but have been advised it is the way of the future so am embracing it.
However when I am editing in iPhoto and Photoshop I am coming across loads of issues.
    1. Cropping images - when I return to the image to look at it, it gives me the ! sign as thought the image is lost but will be there when I go to edit. This does not happen every time - I have tried doing the same thing to another image and it doesn't happen.
    2. When I crop a portrait images to landscape or vice versa in Photoshop and look at the image in iPhoto it has squashed the image like a fairground mirror trying to push or squeeze it back to the right size.
    3. I duplicated a photo and the copy version does not show up in thumbnails
    4. The thumbnails of images I edit in Photoshop show thumbnails that are on the side or as if the images have been solarised
These are all I can think of for now - I turned them all back to originals so am back to square one as it were!
    Thanks

How are you using iPhoto and Photoshop together?
Processing Raw in a 3rd Party Application
You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop. But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
    Now for the kludge:
You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you *must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file*.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.
Raw is not "the way of the future", it's the way of more work for those who want to take it on. A Raw is an unprocessed dump from the sensor of the camera. Because you have access to the dump from the sensor you can correct more of your mistakes in post-processing than you can in other ways: these include your errors with White Balance, exposure settings and so on.
Some Pros shoot Raw. Others - especially those in News or Sports - shoot jpeg and get the settings right in the camera.
If you're cropping photos it matters very little if the source is Raw or Jpeg.
All of your specific queries might be caused by a damaged database file, damaged plist file or not using iPhoto and PS together correctly. So, until you explain your workflow it's hard to suggest specific fixes.

  • Which edition of photoshop for basic raw photo editing?

I recently bought a Nikon D7100 and will be doing more portrait and wedding photography. I don't have a big budget and wonder what edition to buy and they all include camera raw? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you Bill. I have a good deal of experience with landscape and some portrait photography so I know my cameras well enough. Now I have been asked to do a couple of weddings for friends and family. My weakness is in digital editing, though I have been studying Lightroom tutorials recently and am taking advantage of Adobe’s free 30 day trial on CC and Lightroom. I’m surprised how relatively easy it is to perform basic editing tasks such as colour balancing, straightening, cropping etc. So I’m thinking that will be my best option. I don’t think I need all the extras that come with PS. Thanks again.

  • RAW photo editing for the Panasonic GF1

I've noticed posts about this issue on other sites, but I just wanted to make an official request here. Basically, iPhoto currently does not support the RAW files used by the Panasonic GF1 (and other newer Panasonic cameras). I'm just wondering if and when this support will be added, as I use iPhoto constantly, and I'd like to be able to take all my pictures in RAW without compatibility concerns. Thanks.

Let us say that you are taking a wedding gig for your best friend because he thinks you are a great photographer. You accept and pop off about 400 photographs with a bluish tint because YOU forgot to white balance (tisk tisk). You catch your problem and move on but what about those 400? You already have to enhance them in a graphics program but if they are in JPEG and you messed them up... not me. No way!
RAW is not bound by presets in the camera. You dump the blue tinted image and recolor then enhance and you are done. And, you still have a friend Okay
well maybe not that dramatic but you get the idea.
No matter how beefy iPhoto is RAW is advanced and you should upgrade. You get 3rd party software in the camera called Silky Pix which I believe is Apple compatible or graduate to Aperture, Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Bridge & Photoshop CS4.
    Good luck!

  • Editing raw photos in CS4 and returning to a specific event in Iphoto '09

I wish to edit raw photos in CS4. I have set CS4 as my preferred editor in preferences. When I am finished editing in CS4, I wish to to return the edited photo to the same event from which it came. How do I do this without saving the photo to the desktop (or where ever) and then importing to Iphoto and then dragging to the appropriate event. Please be specific.

I don't use CS4, but I may be able to help. I also shoot in RAW and use iPhoto and I use NX2 as my external editor. Here's how I do what you're asking about.
    (1) In iPhoto->Preferences: select send RAW to external editor.
    (2) In iPhoto->Preferences: select Capture NX2 as external editor.
    (3) Import all RAW photos into iPhoto.
    (4) Double click on a photo to send it to NX2. (iPhoto sends a link to the original RAW file in this step.)
    (5) Make any desired edits in NX2.
    (6) in NX2 select "save". This overwites the original RAW file in iPhoto's library.
    (7) in NX2 select "save as JPEG". Navigate to the iPhoto "modified" directory and overwrite the existing JPEG (The one that iPhoto made when it initially processed your RAW file). You should always get and overwrite warning at this point. It means your in the right place!
All done. After this iPhoto automatically updates the corresponding thumbnail to match. At this point, you modified RAW file and it corresponding JPEG are both stored in iPhoto. I can't think of any reason why this wouldn't also work with CS4.
If at any point you'd like to go back to the RAW file and edit it some more simply select "reprocess raw" or "revert to original" in iPhoto.
In order to be able to navigate into the iPhoto library you first need to make an alias to it by right click and "create alias". Then just place this alias anywhere you like. Browse here in Step 7.
This solution is not for everyone. If you mess up and save your JPEG in the wrong place you may get unexpected results from iPhoto because it's library is not supposed to be messed with by users. But if you are careful you will be fine. It all depends on how comfortable you are with computers. The choice and risk is up to you. I just wanted to make sure you knew a solution existed.

  • How can I move one years worth of Raw photo files to a different hard drive and perserve the edits

How can I move one years worth of raw photo files to a different hard drive (to manage space) and preserve the develope module edits and still see them in  the Library module?

The easiest situation, is where this year's worth of images is grouped physically inside one parent folder (something many people build in from the start, in any case).
If there is a parent folder on disk, but you are not currently seeing that inside LR's Folders panel, you can make this visible to LR by right-clicking on one of the folders which live immediately inside that, and selecting "show parent folder". This gives you a single "handle" by which to manipulate the whole grouping.
Then it is just a matter of moving this parent folder. It's usually as simple as dragging it from one place to another inside LR's Folders panel, however this is a little more difficult when it's a question of another drive which does not yet appear there.
So an alternative method will likely prove more straightforward: physically move the whole year folder into the other drive using your operating system's Explorer/Finder. The folder (and subfolders, and all the contained images) will change with ? icons inside LR, and it all goes "offline". This is because LR's records of where everything is, are known not to currently work (the former location is now not available). But all the edits, thumbnails, keywords, collections etc are still in place because these things are still remembered in the Catalog - and the fullsize previews are still cached also.
Then right-click on the parent folder in LR's Folders (the top folder which shows a "?") and select Update Folder Location. Then browse to the other disk and identify where this folder is now to be found. LR updates all its records and the whole grouping carries on just as before, only using a new  storage location for each image concerned.

  • Can't edit RAW photos in Elements 6

    Hello,
I imported my RAW photos from my Nikon D80 to iPhoto '08 (v7.1.4) When I try to edit the photo in Elements 6 (by double clicking on it), the photo opens as a JPEG in Elements. Same thing happens if I try to drag the photo from iPhoto to my desktop - it automatically converts to JPEG.
    Any thoughts are appreciated!

    Ozark
iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced -> Check the box at 'Use RAW when using external editor
Dragging to the desktop will always get you the current version. Try exporting (File -> Export) setting the kind: to Original.

  • Can I edit Nikon D5100 RAW photos in iPhoto '09?

I recently shot photos for an event with my Nikon D5100, using the RAW + jpeg setting. I uploaded my photos into an iPhoto event, and both the RAW and jpeg photos appeared in the event. I have read that iPhoto '09 supports lossless RAW file editing, so I selected one of the RAW photos and attempted to edit it. iPhoto entered the edit window, but the image appeared blurry and all of the editing tools were grayed out. Photo editing works fine with the jpeg files in my event. Also, when I double click one of the RAW images it opens it as a gray exclamation point icon.
More information: I am running OS X 10.6.8, and iPhoto 8.1.2. The page at the below link indicates that the D5100 is supported in 10.6.8, without mention of a specific RAW Compatibility update that must accompany the OS. I am assuming that since iPhoto '11 requires OS X 10.7.5 or later this information applies to my use of iPhoto '09, though any RAW compatibility updates on the Apple site for download are either only for iPhoto '11 or already installed on my computer.
Any insights on what may be going wrong? Thanks.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3825

I believe that the 5100 will work on iPhoot 09 and 10.6.8 and these issues:
I selected one of the RAW photos and attempted to edit it. iPhoto entered the edit window, but the image appeared blurry and all of the editing tools were grayed out. Photo editing works fine with the jpeg files in my event. Also, when I double click one of the RAW images it opens it as a gray exclamation point icon.
are due to the fact that iPhoto cannot find the Raw file - that's what the ! means.
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • How do I edit RAW photos and save as jpeg?

HI! I have some RAW photos that I want to edit and save as jpeg. Will the edits compromise the file and how do I then save these edited files as jpegs and will that compromise the files? THANKS!

What do you mean by “Will my files be compromised“?
When you edit a photo with iPhoto you’re Original file is preserved exactly as it is, there are no changes made to it whatever.
will I be able to make a readable disc?
Why not? But what do you mean by “readable” Readable by who?

you are not doing anything wrong but it looks like the editor preference file is corrupted.  You can recreate the settings by doing this:
    1) Close everything on your computer that is open and launch PSE to go to the welcome screen like this:
    2) Now before clicking on anything, press:
CTRL+ALT+SHIFT with one hand (left hand) and keep it pressed while also clicking on the editor icon (with your other hand on the left mouse click) shown in red box in the above picture .  Keep it pressed until you see another window like this:
When you get this window, just click on Yes button and hopefully it should correct itself.
    good luck and post back.

  • Lr3 photo - edit in PSE8 - no raw option?

To edit a raw photo in the Lightroom 3 Library - into PSE 8 - is there not an option to Edit that photo in its raw format?
I only have one option, which is: Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments, and its to edit in PSE8 at a TIFF or PSD file
can I somehow choose to edit the raw file?
    thank-you

LR 3.2 uses the equivalent of ACR 6.2 so its possible to do your full edits to the raw data there.
PSE 8 has limited functions of ACR available, so why would you wish to use that instead of LR which has the full functionality?
