RAW photo editing for the Panasonic GF1

I've noticed posts about this issue on other sites, but I just wanted to make an official request here. Basically, iPhoto currently does not support the RAW files used by the Panasonic GF1 (and other newer Panasonic cameras). I'm just wondering if and when this support will be added, as I use iPhoto constantly, and I'd like to be able to take all my pictures in RAW without compatibility concerns. Thanks.

Let us say that you are taking a wedding gig for your best friend because he thinks you are a great photographer. You accept and pop off about 400 photographs with a bluish tint because YOU forgot to white balance (tisk tisk). You catch your problem and move on but what about those 400? You already have to enhance them in a graphics program but if they are in JPEG and you messed them up... not me. No way!
RAW is not bound by presets in the camera. You dump the blue tinted image and recolor then enhance and you are done. And, you still have a friend Okay
well maybe not that dramatic but you get the idea.
No matter how beefy iPhoto is RAW is advanced and you should upgrade. You get 3rd party software in the camera called Silky Pix which I believe is Apple compatible or graduate to Aperture, Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Bridge & Photoshop CS4.
Good luck!

When will newcomers notice there is an ACR Forum?
Drollery aside, it is of course understandable that many people seem to perceive ACR as part of Photoshop, but it is, if I understand correctly, maintained and developped by a team of its own and there is a Forum dedicated to it specifically. (edited)

  • Photo editing on the iPad?

Setting asidde why one might want to do photo editing on the iPad, are there any apps for that? And if there are, where do the photos get stored? Thanks--

I also looked into editing the photo in iPad ,and I agree with the previous reader the t it luck the pixel level control. The only thing it good for is just a quick color correction and some sort of easy editing. My other concern is that, even if iPad is terrific tool to see a photos , there is no way to categorize, rate or sort them without using the big brother MAC! why? I can't get it why can't I star's rate the photo?

Check, if you have the "Primary Only" option enabled. Then keywords will only be applied to the "Primary Image":
See:                  Keywords or ratings are applied only to one of the selected images - why?
Uncheck the little square button with the "1".

  • Preparing my photo library for the beta Photos is taking the better part of a week. Is this normal?

The process of "preparing" my photo library for the beta Photos is taking the better part of a week. Is this normal?  I have around 2000 photos the iPhoto library I am uploading.

How are you preparing the library?  The only thing I would do to prepare for converting to Photos once it's released would be the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - run Option #1, Repair Permissions.
    3 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.
Do this just prior to launching Photos for the first time.

  • Raw Photo Editing

I am new to Raw but have been advised it is the way of the future so am embracing it.
However when I am editing in iPhoto and Photoshop I am coming across loads of issues.
    1. Cropping images - when I return to the image to look at it, it gives me the ! sign as thought the image is lost but will be there when I go to edit. This does not happen every time - I have tried doing the same thing to another image and it doesn't happen.
    2. When I crop a portrait images to landscape or vice versa in Photoshop and look at the image in iPhoto it has squashed the image like a fairground mirror trying to push or squeeze it back to the right size.
    3. I duplicated a photo and the copy version does not show up in thumbnails
    4. The thumbnails of images I edit in Photoshop show thumbnails that are on the side or as if the images have been solarised
These are all I can think of for now - I turned them all back to originals so am back to square one as it were!
    Thanks

How are you using iPhoto and Photoshop together?
Processing Raw in a 3rd Party Application
You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop. But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
    Now for the kludge:
You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you *must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file*.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.
Raw is not "the way of the future", it's the way of more work for those who want to take it on. A Raw is an unprocessed dump from the sensor of the camera. Because you have access to the dump from the sensor you can correct more of your mistakes in post-processing than you can in other ways: these include your errors with White Balance, exposure settings and so on.
Some Pros shoot Raw. Others - especially those in News or Sports - shoot jpeg and get the settings right in the camera.
If you're cropping photos it matters very little if the source is Raw or Jpeg.
All of your specific queries might be caused by a damaged database file, damaged plist file or not using iPhoto and PS together correctly. So, until you explain your workflow it's hard to suggest specific fixes.
    Regards
    TD

  • How does Apple process Raw Photo's for Books?

Shooting in Raw I recently made up an 80 page book, all of Raw photo's about 7meg each. However the PDF File that was uploaded to Apple was only 20megs in total. So a massive compression was used. This surely happens every time.
If so is there any point in Shooting Raw, and would Big Jpeg files suffer a simular compression?
As the process is all about up load time for files, surely what ever we shoot will be degraded by the very nature of online ordering? Or will it?
Love to know the best working practice for optimum results. Apple are so secretive no useful information is available.
    Thankk you.

I do not have an answer for you, but I share your pain.
I, too, used raw files to create a book. Some of the pictures in the book appeared soft and in some instances there was noticeable stair-casing.
I recently heard from apple regarding issues I had with the quality of the book printing. Regarding image sharpness, I received this cryptic message from the folks at apple.
"3) We have also examined the PDF file submitted with your order and noticed that a few of the photos were very dark, and the resolution was off which made a few of the photos not sharp"
No explanation was provided as to why the "resolution was off". Since I was working with Raw files, I assume it's aperture's responsibility to set up the resolution properly?
Resolution was there, I know that because I use a 16.7 megapixel camera.
In this forum, one person mentioned that he exported jpegs then imported them back into aperture to create a book. In doing so, he achieved the sharpness he desired. Obviously, though, that isn't an ideal workflow.

  • Photo settings for the web

I wish to find the best setting for editing photos to be published to the web.  I previously had cs3 and had no problems, but now I have cs6 and have noticed that the pictures lose color saturation and just plain look faded when I upload them to my website.  I have been all over the internet looking for information and have made some changes according to what I have found, but the photos still look the same on the web.  Can someone please help?  Thank you.

Ok I just found the place to change the information on the google chrome settings but still not any different.  I guess I am expecting my pictures to look exactly how they look in photoshop when I post them to my web page.  I have always just saved my photos.  I have made all my settings in CS6 to sRGB and I thought that would fix the problem but its not.  Is there anything else I am missing?  Can you believe, all of this over one stinking photo because I am a perfectionist.  I am trying to get my photoshop settings perfect (at least the way they were in cs3), when I should be in my studio designing jewelry.  LOL!

  • Video/Photo Editing on the Mac Mini (question mark?)

I recently discovered the Mac Mini and immediatly thought "what a great thing, a cheeper version of a mac that i can use to edit things like video and potentialy pictures!"
However, it has been brought to my attention that the mini might not be the most powerful machine and potentialy incapable of handeling video/photo editing due to a less powerful graphics card.
My question pretty much is, can I effectivly edit on a mac mini or is there a way to upgrade the video card to make it more capable?
    thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
One of the users in my system bought a mini specifically for video work - and it works extremely well. The on-board graphics don't obstruct effective use of the system for this sort of work at all, and in fact video work is perfectly feasible on systems with vastly inferior graphics cards than the one used in the mini, so that should not be a concern. The same is true of photo editing.
It's certainly true that the mini isn't the most powerful Mac of course, but to put that in context, the current Intel minis are on a general par in processing power to the top of the range G5 powermacs of 3 years ago - many of which are still in use in demanding circumstances. The mini's drawbacks are the lack of internal expansion options and the relatively slow hard drive, but a the former can be largely overcome by adding desired components externally, such as extra hard drives and burners, and the impact of the second can be mitigated to a significant degree by maxing out the RAM. Thus a 1.6 mini with 2Gb RAM will perform rather better than a 1.8 mini with the stock 512Mb.
In practice, the video card is good for all tasks short of 3D gaming - which is just as well since it's embedded on the logic board and thus cannot be replaced!

  • What are the format settings for the Panasonic HDC-HS9 on Final Cut Pro?

I have the Panasonic HDC-HS9 and I have recorded a load of stuff; however when it comes down to editing it I can't seem to get the right format setting/easy set up in Final Cut Pro.
    Can anyone help?

Have you used the Log and Transfer window and transcoded the AVCHD files that that camera records to ProRes? If not try that. AVCHD has to be transcoded in order for FCP 6 to work with it, and ProRes is a lossless compression so it's the way to go here I think. You open the preferences in the Log and Transfer window (opened by typing shiftcmd8). The prefs are in a button with a little gear picture on it in the Log and Transfer window. You navigate to the original files shot by your camera and choose ProRes 422 as the codec. Then set sequence settings to be ProRes. You also must have the latest FCP software to all to work.

  • Basic photo editing for new I-Mac packages to add faces on to pics etc

I have recently bought an i_mac and getting on great with it. Only bought to use for family computer and we add holiday snaps etc and make the odd photo album.
Is there an inexpensive photo editing package i.e. where I can impose photo faces onto other images - somehting similar to Windows Paint when we had the PC - although I would imagine with the Apple this would be a little more sophisticated!
    Thanks

Well, there is Photoshop Elements for Mac (cheapest version) - don't know how much it is because I got it free when I bought my Wacom tablet. And, there is Graphic Converter - excellent app for a lot of stuff including adding text - cost is reasonable. I've used that for years. Those are the two that come to mind at the moment.
