RAW Photos are "Unreadable" by iphoto6

I can no longer import RAW photos into iphoto?
I could import them just a few weeks ago?
It won't import any kind of RAW file now. From my Canon, or my Sony or Photoshop RAW.
I can even export an old RAW file from iphoto and it won't re-import this.
The RAW files are okay. They open fine in Photoshop.
I tried re-insalling using the combo update for 10.4.8 but that does not help.
I also am having the same problem my Powerbook G4 too.
Preview app will display the RAW files properly.
Also, Aperture will not read the files either.
Any suggestions?
Does anyone else have the same problem?

From what I understand RAW photos are supposed to open in raw in photoshop CC. I don't understand why my RAW photos don't open in RAW in photoshop CC or Lightroom 5

Has the behavior changed compared to how it used to open ? If so, do you refer to the Camera RAW window similar to this: http://screenshots.en.sftcdn.net/en/scrn/78000/78026/adobe-camera-raw-22.jpg
What is the file extension of your photos ?
In Lightroom, there is no special way of opening a RAW file vs. JPEG. They all open the same. What is the Lightroom behavior ? Can you post a screenshot ?

  • Raw photos are corrupted on import

some of my raw photos are coming in completely corrupted
the original files in aperture are fine and have a backup elsewhere but am wondering if there's anything that can be done to prevent the problem?

There are so many possible problems here, that we'll need much more information.
    1. What camera? What file type? Is the camera fully supported?
    2. How are you importing? Direct from the Camera? Via a USB Card Reader?
    3. What's the nature of the corruption? What's the difference between the corruption in Aperture and the problem in iPhoto?
Any more info you can add will help.

  • RAW photos are purple when imported

Aperture has just added RAW support for my Olympus E-M1.  I took several photos in JPG+RAW.  When importing them to Aperture the JPGs were fine but some, not all, of the RAW images became purple.  Is this an Aperture problem, an SD card problem, or camera problem?  Someone told me to reformat my SD cards because I had been using them on my Nikon camera, so I did.  Could this be the problem?  Also, when I put the SD card in my MacBookPro again, it showed up in Finder but not in the Import menu.  Could this also be related to not reformatting the card before taking RAW photos?  I haven't had the problem with JPGs with this camera.
    Thank you for any help.

There a a number of different issues at play.
This is the embedded preview extracted using Exiftools. The preview is 3200 x 2400 which is 4 x 3. (I resized it here upload speed).
However, the embedded preview when seen in Aperture, is squashed into a 3 x 2 format image:
When the raw is loaded, this is what is seen.
As well as the purple issue, the file is cropped at the top and bottom and stretched back to 4 x 3 format. Very weird!
Aperture is mis-interpreting the files data, especially the blue channel which is all hunched into the image midtones.
If you add a curves adjustment and use auto (the coloured version) it will get the image a bit closer, I then tweaked the curves (and also used WB and Levels) to get the image closer:
However, obviously, the image is still cropped.
Here are the curves for each of the RGB channels. I added a second curve, to tweak the blue becuse it was hard to work with with the data all hunched up.
You don't need to be concerned about your raws. I checked them in RawTherapee and they seem fine and corruption-free.
I'm convinced this is an Aperture issue, where one of the settings is confusing Aperture (look for a common theme in the affected images, did you choose to shoot in 3 x 2, is it just the long exposure ones, etc).
When Apple releases a fix, your images should return to normal.
In the mean time, you can use Exiftool to extract the embedded previews to have 3200 x 2400 jpegs to play with, or use an alternative convert to create TIFFs for using in Aperture.

  • IPhoto 11 tells me Nikon Coolpix 5700 RAW files are "unreadable".

So, how can I import my pictures?
    I haven't got Photoshop yet.

You can't without converting them to a format that iPhoto will understand.
The Raw from every model of camera is different. Note: that's every model not every brand. So, the NEF produced by a Nikon D40 is not the same as the NEF produced by a D60, the CR2 produced by a Canon 350 is not the same as the CR2 produced by a Canon 400.
Therefore the Raw for every camera model needs to be added individually. If yours is not supported then let them know you want it:

  • Raw Photos not Visible in CS5 Bridge

I have been using CS5 for several years with my Sony a100 DSLR.  I recently purchased a Sony a99 DSLR and my Raw photos are not visible in Bridge.  How can I correct this issue?

If you are referring to the Sony Alpha SLT-A99V (the EXACT model numbers are important) Camera Raw 6.x for Photoshop CS5 will never get updated for the Sony Alpha SLT-A99V.
Your options are to upgrade to Photoshop CS6 and ACR 7.2 (the first version that supported the Sony Alpha SLT-A99V) or download the free DNG Converter 7.3 (current version) and convert those files to DNG. Go to the Digital Negative (DNG) page and scroll down to Downloads to download the correct platform (Mac/Windows).

  • Canon RAW Photos Corrupted in iPhoto

In the last few weeks my Canon RAW photos are importing with some photos corrupted (half good half another photo or unrecognizable), Anyone experiencing a similar problem recently?

It's an SL1 but as the photos import fine into other photo apps I don't believe it's the camera. It (and all of my Canon cameras imported fine prior to the last raw update)

  • Using PS 9 with RAW photos

Am I right in thinking that RAW photos are not acceptable to PSE 9? These are .nef  files from Nikon.
Is is therefore necessary to update to a later version of PSE?

You could use the 8.6 DNG Converter to convert the D3200 files to dng copies, which pse 9 should then open.
Of course, you could also upgrade to pse 13, which would open the D3200 files directly without the need for the dng converter.

  • I imported about 300 RAW images yesterday and worked with them for about an hour. iPhoto locked up on me and I rebooted. After I did the event icon is now gray and it says there are no photos. I know the photos are there. Any idea how I can recover them?

a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

  • Why are Panasonic GX7 RAW photos not visible in Aperture but in OS X Mavericks and iPhoto?

My Panasonic GX7 RAW photos seem to be visible in OS X Mavericks and iPhoto, but bizarrely not in Aperture (3.5.1).
Does anyone know why this would be? Any solution greatly appreciated.
I've been unable to mange a significant number of images for almost 7 months now due to Aperture's lack of GX7 RAW support and am seriously considering migrating to Lightroom 5. Aperture has been my workflow application of choice for the last 7 or 8 years, but I feel the current situation has become unacceptable and deeply disappointing .

That camera was supported in digital camera Raw 5.0.1 and Aperture 3.4.5 or later. As you say the files are supported in iPhoto it seems you have the right Raw file.
Have you tried it with new imports in Aperture does it still fail? What if you reprocess the Raw files in Aperture, any change?

  • I burned my first iDVD andpicture quality is not good.  Originals are excellent.  My photos are shot in raw or jpeg, both are not sharp when I view my DVD.  I viewed it on my 1080 dpi tv and my new apple computer.

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico:  http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie  as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast,  for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 7 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

  • I have Lightroom 4.4 and a Nikon d800 with firmware upgrade 2.005. raw files are now since upgrade, unreadable. any plugins or advice? Thanks

I have Lightroom 4.4 and a Nikon d800 with firmware upgrade 2.005. raw files are now since upgrade, unreadable. any plugins or advice? Thanks

I select the images I want uploaded, NEF files, click the "IMPORT" button, process bar comes up and shows work in progress, but no progress. after about 2 minutes, dialogue box appears with message: "unable to import because the following files are unreadable: NEFxxxx, etc."

hi cannot import RAW photos from my canon eos 5d mark 3 to iphoto 9.6 with iOS  X Yosemite. Fotos are black. Did you have a solution for that?

Thanks. Once ImageCapture had accessed the photos, THEN iPhoto began to pick up the data, so I was ultimately able to do both. It only worked with the cable, though, not the card readers. Weird.
And I really appreciate the ImageCapture tip. Any idea why it worked?

  • My photos  are in Raw Format when I open in Bridge and they appear very clean but when I transfer them to Photoshop they are full of noise. What should I do to fix the problem? Thanks.

are you sure its not just the way you are viewing the photo? you don't even see noise on the preview in Bridge and when I say preview I mean when zooming into the preview window. My thought process being in PS you are zoomed in more

  • I cannot get the iPhoto to read an old restored I photo folder. I can see all the pictures in the folder but iPhoto says they are unreadable.

I have resorted all my files following a hard drive crash. I can see all my photos in an iPhoto folder but when I try and import to iPhoto it says all the files are unreadable.

One should never import an iPhoto library into another iPHoto library.  What you should do is place the restored library in your Pictures folder (move any new library out of it) and launch iPhoto.  It will find the library in the Pictures folder and open it.
