Raw support in Aperture

Please see earlier 20D posting.
However please note:
Re-start Aperture and your Raw images will appear!!!!
Mike

Hello,
Unfotunately it doesn't work at all with the DSC-R1. The new OS system as well as Aperture 1.5 don't provide support for RAW format coming from the DSC-R1.
A few months ago though, you could see on the list of supported camera for Aperture 1.x < 1.5 a possible support for DSC-R1 (the name on list was followed by a star). This was also before the entry on the market of the alpha-100 Sony-Minolta. This is sad, as I guess they preferred tp support a wider spectrum of sold camera with the alpha, on the hypothesis that Sony would sell a lot of them, in fact much more than the DSC-R1.
Personaly, I will try to crack the system to include the DSC-R1, following the instructions provided on this forum.

  • Canon 7D Raw Support in Aperture 2 after installing Aperture 3 trial

    Hi!
I'm having a really weird problem! A few months ago I purchased Aperture 2 and have been working with it ever since. About a week ago I installed the Aperture 3 trial to see what the general differences are. After playing with it I noticed not enough "useful" changes compared to Aperture 2 to actually purchase Aperture 3. So I removed Aperture 3 and went back to my good old Aperture 2.
Two days ago I bought the Canon EOS 7D, but when connecting to my Mac the Raw files are not supported by Aperture 2! While I was trying out Aperture 3 I used software update to update Camera Raw as well and it seems that Camera Raw Update 3.2 enabled Aperture 3 to work with my 7D's raw files but disabled Aperture 2 to support them! I searched the Apple support pages for older versions of Camera Raw and came across version 2.7 which should enable Aperture 2 to work with the EOS 7D. But as expected, I cannot install 2.7 because 3.2 is already installed!
Does anyone know wether it's possible to "downgrade" camera raw to version 2.7? Or is there any other solution to my problem? It can not believe that an innocent Aperture 3 trial forces me to actually upgrade to Aperture 3 because Aperture 2 now refuses to support my brand new 7D?! Is there anyone on this forum familiar with this problem and able to help me? Many thanks in advance!
    Kind regards,
    Mick van Jaarsvelt

I am running with same type of problem. I have Aperture 2.0 and can not work the Raw files from my Canon 7D. I have no problems working Raw files from my old Rebel Canon camera. Did you solve your problem?

  • No Nikon D3100 raw support with Aperture 2

I have Aperture 2, and have recently bought a Nikon D3100. All updates have been made, and I am able to see the raw files with Preview. But they are still not recognized by the Aperture 2 application.
Is it a bug? What gives?

With all due respect this has nothing to do with "gaming". LR2 users can't update to ACR6 either, same situation.
I feel frustrated. Now I'll have to start using other application, since I will not continue to invest on an application that does not update raw support and tries to game me into upgrading.
So you're willing to buy a whole new application instead of paying for the $99 upgrade? And this application will offer you lifetime support for any new camera bodies, no upgrades required, ever? Hmm...
It's the reality of software: at some point, you need to upgrade. Like it or not.
The advantages of AP3 over AP2 for any serious photographer are well worth the minimal upgrade cost. The RAW updates last for the life cycle of the product they're aimed at. When a new version comes out support usually follows. This isn't necessarily fun but pretty standard all around.

  • HT200219 Just got Olympus OMD EM-1, very hot camera. No RAW support from Aperture. When?

Just got Olympus OMD EM1, no RAW support. When?

Support for the camera came out earlier today, in fact.
Run software update and install camera raw update 5.0.2.

  • Sony Nex-C3 Raw Support in Aperture

Any idea when this will be supported? Any workaround to support the ARW format now?

As we're just users like yourself there is no way anyone here can know when a particular camera's RAW format will be supported. You can use Aperture->Provide Aperture Feedback to alert Apple to your needs.
In the meantime you could convert the RAW files to DNG and import those. Keep the original RAW's safe someplace for when the format is supported

  • RAW support in Aperture for Sony R1

For Aperture 1.5 the Tech Specs indicate that it supports RAW format for Sony DSC-F828, DSC-V3 and DSLR-A100.
Does anyone know if it then also supports Sony's DSC-R1 digital camera?

  • How long does it usually take to get added raw support (nex5n)?  i pretty much just use aperture 3 and love it but why does lightroom from adobe seem to get raw support faster than Apple's Aperture 3.  Also FCPX lacks v Adobe on 60p.

How long does it usually take to get raw support for Aperture 3?  Is it slowed by Apple or camera company.  I only ask because Lightroom has support for nex5n raw but Aperture 3 does not.  Also direct import into Adobe premiere  and ability to edit in 60p.  However, support for 60 p not as easily worked with in FCPX.  I am just surprised Apple does not keep pace with these type of updates that Adobe does.  Don't get me wrong I love and use Apple software  when I can but I wish Apple was ahead of adobe in getting this support.  I guess more of a vent than a question.

    Yes, more of a vent.
    FWIW I agree.
Camera companies keep RAW specs confidential so firms like Apple and Adobe have to (sort of) reverse-engineer to develop RAW converters for each new camera. The good news is to my eyes/brain Apple usually does a slightly better job at it than Adobe does. The best RAW conversions (logically) come from the camera manufacturers.
Apple gives up market share with slow support for new cameras. IMO really DUMB. It has at least been improving...

  • How can I use EOS 6D RAW files with Aperture 3.2.4?

The EOS 6D RAW support for Aperture requires Aperture 3.4 or later. I tried to update to Aperture 3.4 but that requires OSX 10.8.3. I am stuck with OSX 10.6.8 for a while because I use Adobe CS5.5 and it is not compatable with newer OSX. So i do not seem to have a path for 6D RAW support. I can use my EOS 20D RAW files just fine. What is it about the 6D RAW file that necessitates OSX 10.6.8 or Aperture 3.4?

The common way is to try converting to DNG and then use the DNGs with Aperture. The drawback (other than the format conversion) is you lose camera specific optimisations with the DNG (mostly noise reduction tweaks for specific ISO values and colour tweaks).
In the past it would have been easy to edit a few config files to get Aperture to recognise new cameras with similar sensor tech as existing cameras, but this data is now encoded so can't be changed. It is a bit frustrating when you know there is nothing special about the sensor and Aperture would be able to process the data just fine.

  • No new raw support in 3.4?

As far as I can tell, the update to 3.4 and to iPhoto 9.4 offer no new support for recent cameras.  I still don't have Aperture support for the SONY RX 100 (I do in Lightroom, but not in any products that depend on Apple's raw support - iPhoto, Aperture, Pixelmator, etc..  I understand the no support for the Nikon D600; the camera just started shipping two days ago, but I can't understand why Apple hasn't upgraded the support for dozens of cameras released over the summer.
    Just a gripe.

Aperture menu -> Provide Aperture Feedback
Gripe to them, they can do something about it.

  • New camera raw support in 10.5.7

But unfortunately still no Leica D-LUX4 or Panasonic LX3.

nerowolfe, no, of course I don't "know for a fact that information was submitted to Apple and was ignored." I used reason and logic to conclude that it's more likely than not that information has been supplied. And I could just as well be wrong. But here's what I based my thinking on:
Leica announced both the M8.2 and the D-LUX4 on the same day last September, and I believe the DLUX4 was actually available before the M8.2, which is now supported. Indeed, I think every Leica digital camera is supported now, except for the DLUX4. In order for us to conclude that Leica is the problem, we'd have to suppose that, unlike all of its other cameras, Leica is holding back on this one specific model for some reason. Is that a reasonable supposition? I don't think so. Further, their predecessors are supported (both the M8 and the D-LUX 3). So at least the history here suggests that Leica does cooperate. But it's certainly possible that this camera was singled out for special treatment. Who knows, maybe they made a deal with PhaseOne, makers of CaptureOne supplied with the camera, not to give the secret sauce ingredients to Apple.
But no, I don't know for sure that information was in fact supplied and was ignored. I simply was hoping for support for this camera that's been out for many months now without raw support in Aperture.

  • New RAW Support in 10.5.8?

I noticed that they new OS X 10.5.8 update includes new RAW compatibility. I am not home at my Mac right now and would like to know what cameras this update adds (I'd be very happy if it added the Olympus E-P1!). I checked the official list, but it hasn't been updated for 10.5.8 yet.

  • Fuji X100 raw support ?

Fujiguys on twitter indicate that there is no plan to bring X100 (.raf) raw support in Aperture, but only to 3rd party Mac software. Why that ? Does Apple has plans to bring this support to Aperture users ?

I hope Apple and the other lot get their act together soon.
I believe Fuji has to make the specs available first in order for others to support the format. And although it was announced back in September, those specs weren't final until the first production units started shipping - this month. From what I've seen and read the Silkypix based software that comes bundled with the camera is far from perfect - I've seen serious problems with highlights on one example. So for me it's a question of getting it right and not simply getting it out the door.
I agree the jpg's from it are impressive, but they don't give you the raw file.
Totally agree with you. To me, shooting JPEG only is like throwing away negatives. But it's nice to know they've done such a good job internally. It makes the camera that much more interesting and the wait a little more bearable. RAW+JPEG a must though.
This camera is a game changer in the bigger scheme of things, and will be used by a lot of influential photographers.
Looks that way but time will tell. I for one am totally sold and can't wait to pick up my pre-order. I haven't been this excited about a camera in a long time.

  • Fujifilm RAW support?

When will we have RAW support in Aperture for images from the Fujifilm cameras X-Pro 1 and X-E1. These cameras use a totally new designed X-trans CMOS sensor with a 6x6 color filter array. This makes the job much more complicated for Apple I assume, but it's been more than 9 months now since the release of the X-Pro 1 so I think it's about time. Switching to a different RAW converter is not the solution I prefer.
Ps. I know the support is in OS X rather than in Aperture.

According to an article at Fujirumors today, Fuji is working with Adobe and Apple to make their software compatible with the RAW-files of the X-Trans sensor.
    Billy from the Fuji Guys:
"They recently signed a non-disclosure agreement with both Adobe and Apple and provided them with specs for supporting the X-Trans sensor! He said he is also pushing strong with Fuji to add support for TIFF in the camera so that could be another good thing for some."
Apple released Digital Camera RAW Compability Update 4.01 for 11 new cameras just two days ago, but the Fujis were not amongst them. Question is, will it be later or never?

  • Mechanism for Requesting RAW Support

Is there a way to request RAW support in Aperture for a new camera? I recently bought a Fuji HS10 camera that takes RAW + JPEG. The RAW format for the HS10 doesn't appear to be supported by Aperture (I am using Aperture 2 with OS 10.5.8, but I plan to upgrade to the latest system software and Aperture 3).
I thought that it might be useful to Apple and to us Apple customers if there were some routine mechanism (for instance an email address or a web page) for drawing Apple's attention to a need for support.

    Hi dkherron;
You might try submitting feedback report here.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html
But I would not hold me breath on seeing any results really soon.

  • Does anyone know when Aperture will be able to provide RAW support for the Nikon 1 J3 ?

I have just bought Aperture to support my new camera, a Nikon 1 J3.  I then discovered that this is not one of the Nikon camereas yet supported by Aperture for RAW format pictures.
Does anyone know when this may be addressed in a later version of Aperture?
    Kind regards
    Simon

    Léonie
Thanks very much for your help.  I see from the discussion threads on this that I am not alone!
I will be visiting my local Apple Store today to see if they know when my camera will be fully supported.
I got it through Cutio in Germany and the instructions were in German which I learnt at school - which is great for travel and holidays but not for reading technical manuals!
    Kind regards
    Simon
