RAW vs OCFS for Clusterware files

Hello All!
I would like to know your experiences using ocfs or raw devices for clusterware files & voting disks in a RAC enviroment. Which do you think is better?, what are the advantages that you experienced using them, disadvantage, issues, etc.
Best Regards & Many Thanks for your help in advance.

using ocfs or raw devices for clusterware files
Raw Devices
Linux provides raw device access with a pseudo filesystem which presents a file-like
interface to read and write actual disk partitions. Normally reads and writes to files
go through the Linux filesystem buffer cache; however, raw device IO bypasses the
buffer cache and directly deals with the underlying hardware devices. There is one
raw device for one partition.
OCFS is Oracle’s open-source filesystem available on various platforms. This is an
extent-based (an extent is a variable contiguous space) filesystem which is currently
intended for Oracle datafiles and Oracle RAC (real application clusters). In terms
of the file interface it provides to applications, OCFS balances performance and
manageability by providing functionality that is in-between the functionality
provided by raw devices and typical filesystems. While retaining the performance
of raw devices.
http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/linux/pdf/Linux-FS-Performance-Comparison.pdf
performance??? ... i think ... not different
What should you use ... OCFS or RAW ?
It depends on your design;)
if you have plan to share ORACLE_HOME... use ocfs2 and then you can share OCR + VOTE on OCFS.
if you have plan to use ASM... I think you don't need to use OCFS, you can make OCR + VOTE on raw devices.
By the way... if you use ASM and you don't want to perform on ocfs2 ... use raw ...
Good Luck

Hi there! Because the forum you originally posted in is for beginners trying to learn the basics of Photoshop, I moved your question to the Photoshop General Discussion forum, where you'll get more specialized help.

  • Configuring Storage for Clusterware on Raw devices

    My proposed system is:
    - Sun Solaris 10
    - Oracle 10G RAC
    - Oracle Clusterware
    - Raw devices for Clusterware files
    - ASM for database flies
Assume I have appropriately sized LUNs assigned on my SAN for OCR and voting disks. My question is, how do I configure the raw devices required for these Clusterware files?
I have read the Oracle RAC/Clusterware installation guide (Sun Solaris, SPARC), which goes as far as identifying the requirements but does not give the procedure. If I wish to use raw devices for ASM, it gives a procedure for creating partitions on the LUNs. Is anything like this required for the Clusterware files (OCR and voting disks)?

As far as I know, Solaris follows the traditional raw device definition, which basically says that a raw device is a disk or a partition on a disk that does not contain a file system (yet). Given your question, this would mean that any device that you can find that does not contain a file system would be a raw device.
    Message edited here:
However, you need to find the right link to this device in order to use it as a raw or character device. Otherwise, the device would be used as a block device, which means it will be buffered.
On Solaris, those character devices should be listed under /dev/rdsk, while the block device would be listed under /dev/dsk. (Please, refer to: http://www.idevelopment.info/data/Unix/Solaris/SOLARIS_UnderstandingDiskDeviceFiles.shtml)
    End of update.
Therefore, you have 2 options in your case. You can create LUNs in your storage that would be just suitable to host your Voting Disks and OCRs OR you can create a bigger LUN and put an OCR and a Voting Disk on this one, AFTER you have sliced the disk (LUN) using the format command.
There is only one thing to remember: If you follow Oracle's recommendation to use multiple Votings and mirrored OCRs, it would obviously be better that those devices do not all share the same LUN (for availability reasons).
Last but not least, you may want to have a look at the following forum for a similar discussion on using RAW devices under Solaris: http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5073358&messageID=9267900
    Hope that helps. Thanks.

Sorry, I am on a MAC. I downloaded the link you provided and it's giving the same error message as above. Running CS5.
The error message you gave is from Camera Raw. I thought you said that DNG Converter didn't work?
The link I gave you is an article on getting your raw files to open in Camera Raw. Did you read it? I lazily gave you the link because this is one of the most common problems in this forum, and I get tired of saying the same thing over and over again. I could break it down for your specific case, but I was hoping you could read through the article and work it out for yourself.
    But, here goes:
Your cameras are newer than your raw converter, so it won't understand them.
CS5 comes with Camera Raw 6, which can only be upgraded as far as 6.7.1. You can find out which version of Camera Raw you are running in three ways: in the settings title bar (Cmd-K), in the plug-in title bar (press F to start/stop full-screen mode to reveal the title bar), or Photoshop's Help menu (About Plug-ins).
Downloading raw files from newer Nikon cameras with old versions of Nikon Transfer will actually make them unreadable in Adobe software. They can be fixed with a free utility. Again, it's all in the linked article. You should be using up-to-date Nikon Transfer, or Adobe Photodownloader to avoid this problem.
All being well, you have good raw files on your computer. You can convert them to dng using Adobe DNG Converter. IF you are on OSX Leopard or Snow Leopard, you CAN'T use the latest version, because Adobe stopped support. But, if you ARE on a later OSX, you can download DNG Converter 8.6.
DNG Converter is designed to convert FOLDERS of raw files at a time. You select a folder of raw files, and tell it to create DNG copies. BUT, you have to set up the converter before you start using it...
If you load up DNG Converter, you'll notice a button labelled "Change Preferences". Clicking this, you'll see the first option is "Compatibility". Here, you must select the appropriate setting for the version of Camera Raw you HAVE (see above). If you can't work this out, just pick "Camera Raw 5.4 and later". THEN pick a folder of raw files and convert them to DNGs.
All the above is already in the article, but I gave you a personalised response. If you still can't get it to work, please give us more than one sentence. Tell us exactly what you tried, and describe exactly what happened. Which version of OSX you're running, what device and software you downloaded your raw files with, how you used DNG Converter, and so on.
I really should be in bed.

You need Adobe camera raw version 8.7. Unfortunately your software pre-dates the camera. ACR 8.7 is only compatible with PSE13. But it is possible to download and install the free DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.7
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.7
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

Hi, does anyone know when there will be a camera-raw plugin for NEF files made with the new Nikon D7200?

I think that camera is too new. Even the DNG converter will not support it. If you have Nikon software with the camera, you could convert to tiff and then use the tiff files in Elements whilst awaiting the next Camera Raw update for PSE13.

  • Does Airport time capsule work well as a storage for large files, such as RAW Photos and HD Video?

If Airport time capsule can work as a storage device, how reliable is it?  Are downloads into Airport dependent on internet speed, or on the time capsule wifi?

If Airport time capsule can work as a storage device, how reliable is it?
The Time Capsule was designed to be used for Time Machine backups, but can equally be used for storage. Like any network storage device it is relatively reliable. However, you should always have a good backup strategy for important files.
Are downloads into Airport dependent on internet speed, or on the time capsule wifi?
Data transfer rates "into" the Time Capsule are dependent on a number of factors. Which factors depend on the original source of the files. Regardless, the common factors will be the TC's internal hard drive interface and data write speeds of the drive itself.

  • Suggestion to store clusterware files

We are installing 5 node 11g RAC on OEL5.
    1. All Oracle (clusterare, asm and oracle) binaries are in local disks
    2. database datafiles will be in ASM (in SAN)
    3. Oracle log and tracefiles will be in NAS
    4. Now i need help/suggestion regarding clusterware files (ocr and voting disk) - Can somebody guide me whats the best practive to place OCR and Voting disk (I only Know they need to be in some shared file sytems, so that all nodes can access). But would like to hear from some one who really implemented.
    Please guide me.
    Thanks,
    Reddy

    Hi ,
can i use just raw/block devices and can be seen by all nodes without using any clustered software (like OCFS2)? Yes,
In fact, in my opinion based in my past experiences, it's the best option. OCR and Voting are not a kind of files that You'd need to alter, change and grow up all the time, due to this, putting it in Raw devices won't increase Your administration's efforts.
You must know that, anyway, all LUNS that You'd use to OCR and voting disks must be seen in all member of the cluster and the Raw devices name must be the same.
Here is the documentation that explains how to configure it [Configuring Disk Devices for Oracle Clusterware Files|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/install.111/b28263/storage.htm#CDEBFDEH]
In my architecture, we are planning to use clusterd file system only for ocr and voting disk because binaries will be > stored in each server's local disk for redundancy and able to do rolling upgradesGood choose! I've been doind it in all my cluster installations, except for the ocfs for OCR and voting disks.
So, i am trying to find out if i can get rid of whole clustering (ofcourse i am going to have CRS) to store the ocr and > voting disk.Storing OCR and voting in Raw devices, binaries in local filesystem and database in ASM a very good option. I've been deploying this kind of configuration and It's been working very well. If I were You I'd go ahead in this way.
    Hope it helps,

  • How to determine raw disks configured for OCR/voting disk, ASM spfile

I have a two-node Oracle 10gR2 RAC configuration using raw disks. Basically, raw disks are used for CRS's OCR/voting disks, ASM's ASM spfile and disk groups.
Is there a better way to figure out what raw disks are configured in Oracle using methods other than those shown below:
    - To find out votedisk:
    # crsctl query css votedisk
    0. 0 /dev/ora_crs_vote1
    1. 0 /dev/ora_crs_vote2
    2. 0 /dev/ora_crs_vote3
    - To find out OCR:
    # ocrcheck
Status of Oracle Cluster Registry is as follows :
    Version : 2
    Total space (kbytes) : 525836
    Used space (kbytes) : 3856
    Available space (kbytes) : 521980
    ID : 1603037329
    Device/File Name : /dev/ora_ocr_file1
    Device/File integrity check succeeded
    Device/File Name : /dev/ora_ocr_file2
    Device/File integrity check succeeded
    Cluster registry integrity check succeeded
    - Is there a way to figure out what disk device is used for ASM spfile?
    - To find out raw disks configured for disk groups:
while connected to the ASM instance in sqlplus:
    SQL> select name,path from v$asm_disk where name like 'DG%';
    NAME
    PATH
    DG_DC_ASM_0000

  • How do I install camera raw 4.6 (for Nikon D90) in Elements 6 for a Mac?

I need to install camera raw 4.6 (for Nikon D90) plug-in on Elements 6 for at Mac?  I'ved downloaded the plug-in but it does not seem to work.  I've got Elements 10 on my desktop Mac but I am using Elements 6 on an older iBook G4.  Any help will be appreciated.  thanks.

For PSE 6, get the .plugin out of the download, then go to your hard drive>library>Application Support>Adobe>plug-ins>file formats and remove the old plug-in, then put just the new .plugin file in there instead. Older versions of PSE can't update ACR from the help menu the way PSE 10 can.

  • Still Looking for Camera Raw Plug-In for CS4

I have Adobe CS4, and, after extensive searching, cannot find the correct version of the Camera Raw plug-in for my Mac (OS 10.6.8).  I just did successfully download and install the DNG converter 8.1 for Macs.  Today I downloaded version 5.4 for mac then it told me to quit before proceeding with the installation, that there was a newer version available.  Adobe states my camera's minimum requirement for Camera Raw is version 5.4.

Can anyone guide me to the right one?  Camera Raw only been a dream until now.  I finally have a great DSLR that supports raw, I've been playing around with it in iPhoto, but it's now time for me to take this to the next level.
    Thanks very much.

Ask such specific questions on the Camera RAW or Photoshop forums and include info about your camera. If it's a newer model, this may ber perfectly normal and the files may require you to upgrade to CS5.1 so you can use the latest versions of Camera RAW or use the standalone DNG converter...

  • How do I access Camera Raw Plug-in for PSE 11?

I can't figure out how to access the Camera Raw plug-in for Photoshop Elements 11 ( on a Macbook Pro OSX.)  I recently installed  PSE 11, and when I select "about plug-in" within the app, it brings up a box that shows version 7.1.0.354.  Does that mean it's already installed?  If so, how do I access it to edit a photo? In past PSE versions I simply chose "Open file / as Camera Raw" but that option doesn't come up.

In the File Open dialog ensure you have All Readable Documents selected for Enable.
Click on the file you want to open

  • Camera Raw not working/recognising CR2 files - CS5, Mac

I cannot get Camera Raw to work. It worked before but took some fiddling around to get it to work. I am using CS5 on a Mac. My camera is supported by the version of Camera Raw I have and it is the latest update for CS5. Help please.

    Hi there
    Thank you for your questions.
    I am using Mavericks.
    Camera is a Canon 6D.
Camera Raw is 6.7.1.340. According to Adobe my camera should be recognised by this.
This is the message I get when I try to open a CR2 file.
Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw. Please visit the Camera Raw help documentation for additional information.
Yes, all Readable Documents is selected in the first drop-down menu. Bottom drop-down menu is Camera Raw.
In Bridge the CR2 files appear as white rectangles instead of images.
I realise that I can convert my CR2 files to DNG but from what I have read on Adobe information I understand that this is not a requirment as Camera Raw should work without having to convert every image to DNG first - or am I completely misunderstanding this?
