Ray tracer failed to launch error is costing me time and money

Add me to the legion of people angry about this bug. Doing a search for it here and everywhere else basically leads me to the conclusion that Adobe knows about this problem and does nothing about it to fix it. I'm working on a project for a client with a deadline that's coming in a few days, and I have to constantly close AE and open it again, sometimes even reboot, to get it to work for a few minutes, and then it crashes again. So something that I could have been close to finish by now, I'm still not half way through because of this horrible bug that Adobe doesn't fix. Of course some people can't complain because they're running it on an unsupported card, but I'm running it on a GTX570 with 1.2 GB of RAM, so there's no reason why it shouldn't work. The machine also has an i7 3930k CPU with 32 GB of very fast RAM, and it's a fresh installation of Windows 8.1 Pro from less than a week ago, with all the latest drivers.
The project is very simple, a solid layer acting as a floor with a grid generator, a layer of text, and about 8 pictures sitting a few pixels above the floor. Nothing overly complicated, and it still crashes all the time. And this is not even a 1080p project, it's 720p.
And to add insult to injury, After Effects does not respect a custom layout when there was a comp viewer in the secondary monitor, so each time I restart AE I have to open a new comp viewer, drag it to the second monitor and resize it. Did nobody at Adobe think that people would be using two comp windows open at the same time, one in each monitor?
Adobe should focus less on adding new flashy features and instead making their software reliable, and not force people to buy CC. They should fix CS6.

I am having the same issue, though today I tried something that helped a lot.  I am working on a mac pro with a flashed Quadro FX 580 and a slower Quadro 4000 card, and two displays.  I've always plugged one display into each of the cards and lately frequently gotten the "Ray Tracer failed to launch" error. Today I plugged both displays into the less-powerful graphics card, leaving the 580 untaxed by running a monitor and so presumably entirely free for Ray Tracing.  And so far today I haven't gotten the error we both know too well.  You mention being on a PC and don't mention having two cards, so this may not help you.  But if you still have the card you swapped out for your 570 and can pop it in your rig it might be worth a try.

    Hi lilnikeair!
Since iTunes uses QuickTime to play audio/video content in iTunes, that error message most likely indicates that there's a problem with your Quicktime installation.
Check out this knowledge base article for information about the issue:

  • Backup failing without any errors in sys prefrerences time machine

What happens: Time Machine scans, prepares, but does not actually back up. It does not report any errors through System Preferences > Time Machine.
I've used Disk Utility to verify both my local disk and my time machine disk (external USB drive).
I've done a full reset of Time Machine ("A4").

    Thanks for your help.
I added the entire Time Machine disk to the spotlight privacy exception, waited for a bit, and removed it. From this line, I assume that it triggered the re-indexing of the drive:

    Yup.
I think one of the issues was that I had the power settings to shut down disks.
That shouldn't be a problem, as they should "spin up" when necessary. Some external HDs respond to that setting, some don't -- they have their own settings. But unchecking the option sometimes fixes the problem, so at least you know what it is.

    Any ideas?
The UUID mismatch message sent by backupd in your first post is because TM hasn't completed a backup, and isn't sure what's changed on your system and needs to be saved. So it does a "deep traversal," comparing your system to the backups (that's the "scanning" in the messages). That has to be repeated every time, until a backup is completed. On subsequent backups, it can use a log of changes that OSX keeps, and will be much quicker.
It sounds like something is corrupted, somewhere. Exclude your TM drive from Spotlight again, but leave it excluded. Verify your internal HD and Repair the TM drive again. (Unfortunately, those will find directory errors and the like, but not necessarily problems within files.)
    Then try another backup.
How old is your external HD? Are you just starting with TM or that disk, or have you been backing-up successfully for a while?
Are you running any kind of Sync application? A couple of the messages mention some sort of sync, but I don't know enough about Spotlight to know whether that's relevant.
Are you running Windows via Parallels, VmWare, or the like?

  • Access Connections fails to launch - "has encountered a problem and needs to close..."

I have an R61 with XP, SP3 installed.  The underlying functionality of Access Connections appears to be working properly (I have access to both Ethernet and wireless using profiles previously established), but when I attempt to launch Access Connections (from system tray icon, Programs, etc.) I get the error message,  "Access Connections has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience," and the option to send or not send an error report to Microsoft.  This makes it impossible to create or edit location profiles.  I first encountered this error several months ago with AC version 5.33 (might have also seen it under 5.3).  Subsequently I have upgraded to version 5.50 and have the same problem. Today I uninstalled AC, restared, reinstalled ver 5.5 (from a fresh download), and restarted.  I still encountering the problem.
Additional information:  Norton Internet Security (2010) is installed.  Microsoft and ThinkVantage patches are up to date.
Please recommend "next steps" in troubleshooting or a way to resolve this issue.
    Thanks

Hmmm... could be a corrupt profile.
    Try this.
    1.  Uninstall Access Connections (but don't delete the profiles)
    2. After the reboot, open REGEDIT.
    3. In the left pane, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, then Lenovo
    4. Still in the left pane, right click on Access Connection and choose export
    5. Assign an appropriate filename and click Save (I suggest somewhere on the Desktop).
    6. Right click on Access Connections again and choose delete.
    7. Open Windows Explorer and go to C:\Program Files\Thinkpad\ConnectUtilities directory.
    8. Delete any files in this directory.
    9. Reinstall Access Connections v5.50
    10. Try and create a profile.
If you still get an error trying to create a profile, then something else is broken.  Be sure you have .NET 3.5 SP1 (it may be under optional downloads in Windows Update).
If it works fine, then you have a bad profile.  Unfortunately, there isn;t an easy way to figure out which one other than try and error of delete profiles and trying one at a time.
    To restore your profiles.
    1. Unistall Access Connections. Reboot.
    2. Double click the saved .reg file on your Desktop and answer Yes to merge it into the registry.
    3. Install Access Connections. Reboot.

  • Launch apps one at a time and disable iTunes at startup

    Hey guys
    I have two questions:
The first one is, is there any way to launch apps at Login but one after the other and not all at the same time? For instance, I would like to launch Adobe Ps, then Ai after Ps loaded, then Mail, and then others. Is this possible?
The second one is, how can I disable iTunes from launching at Login? I've checked my Starup Items and iTunes is not on the list. Also, I've right clicked the icon in the Dock and "Open at Login" is disable as well but it keeps launching every single time I start up my computer.
    Any helps is much appreciated.

In my case, I do need to launch Adobe Ps, Ai and Br, Mail, iChat, Safari, Pages and Cinema 4D every single day for work. Almost everything opens up fast, but like you said, Adobe apps take a lot of memory so they take longer to open. I really hate waiting for these to open up, so I'm looking for a way to make them launch one at a time as soon as I get into the office while I take care of some paper work.
In that case I don't think you need to put in a delay in between the apps to make sure the next only opens after the earlier is finished. I open 5 apps every morning with no delay in between and it always goes smoothly and very fast. Try that first then you can go back and edit the workflow to add the pauses in if you need it.
Is Automator user friendly? I've never used it before. Is it very easy to understand and setup?
It's very user friendly. I've only made about 3 apps (each workflow can be saved as it's own application), the launching multiple application being the last one and it was very easy, took about 5 minutes to create. Of course, someone on here had told me how to do it so that made it very easy.
Unfortunately, I haven't upgraded to Leopard yet and it looks like the interface is very different from Tiger. In Tiger when you open Automator it gives you a list of applications on the left, click on one to select and it will then give you a list of actions available for that application just to the right of that. Double click on the action and it adds it in as your workflow in a large space on the right.
In this case the app I chose was Finder, then Launch Application action. When that is added to the workflow I then had a popup menu of all my apps in my Applications folder so I would just choose the one I wanted. There is even an Other at the bottom to choose an app from elsewhere in case you have any outside the main Applications folder.
To add the pause select Automator from the left hand list of apps and you get a new list of actions, double click on Wait For User Action, which it will put right under the app you are launching as the next step. You can then set the time for how long you want it to wait.
Then go back to Finder and Launch Application and repeat the process for each app you want to open. All the actions in the workflow can be dragged around as much as you want to create a different order.
Very simple. Leopard's interface works differently but I suspect you still need to choose Finder to get to Launch Application and Automator to get to Wait For User Action. Each app has it's own set of actions it can perform but they can all be added together for a workflow.
Then save it as an app and put it on your desktop, or where ever you want, so you can double click to run it then walk away until it's done. Even after saving it you can go back in and edit it at any time, if you wanted to take an app out or add one in, for instance, or want a shorter or longer pause time, etc.

  • I am trying to launch Aperture for the first time and it won't open.  Any tips?

I am trying to launch Aperture on a MacBook Pro for the first time.  It displays "Opening Aperture Library" with a moving wheel... but nothing happens.  Any thoughts on how to trouble shoot?
    Thanks.

on a MacBook Pro for the first time.
What do you mean? Have transferred your Aperture Library from a different machine to a MacBook Pro, or did you just upgrade from a previous version of Aperture?
If it is hanging on opening your Aperture library, your Aperture library may need repairing.
Make a backup of your Aperture library.
Double click the Aperture Library while holding down the option-command key combination ⌥⌘.
From the First Aid panel that appears, select "Rebuild database" (if you upgraded Aperture), else start with "Repair Permissions" and "Repair Database". See this section in the Aperture manual for how to run the First Aid Tools:
Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
If none of this helps, post back please and tell us more about your Aperture library, where it is located, the type of images: raw or jpeg, if it referenced, the exact version of Aperture 3 you have.

  • Ray Trace Render problem

Why do I get  Ray Tracer failed to Launch part way through the render/ram preview? I have done this many times with no problem, the render or ram preview goes 2/3 of the way through and stops with the error. I just can't figure out what's going on. I have deleted layers where the render stops to see if that is the problem but to no avail. This is a project that is due Monday and I have been trying to figure this out for 2 days. Any idea of possible problems? The only thing is at the point where the error stops the render I have some PNG files, although I don't know if that is it, as I take them out and I still get the error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
