RCA to USB

I would like to import my music library from my reel-to-reel tape recorder into iTunes. The line out on my recorder uses RCA jacks. I've tried looking on-line for a RCA to USB cable, but I can't find one. Does anyone know if such a beast exists, or if not, some work-a-round?
Thanks for any help.
Dave

Just plug a dual-RCA to stereo 1/8 minijack cable, available from just about any electronics, audio or computer store, into the audio input on your iMac. No additional cables or adapters should be needed. All you'll need then is appropriate audio recording software (iTunes cannot record audio inputs). GarageBand will do it, or you can use something simpler such as Audacity (freeware).
Regards.

I don't think the dock can support the HDMI dongle. I know it will do Video Out via Composite cable.
The actual dock itself has not been updated for a few years, so this may explain your problem. The packaging was changed last year to include the new remote, dock adapters, and a wall charger. The dock itself is still identical to the 2009 model.

I want to convert my 8mm cassettes to dvd. My only question is, if I use a RCA to USB and hook it up to my camera and macbook air, what will happen? will it work with any app? will imovie open up after plugging it in? will the device even be recognized?

Easy to do, I used to do same long ago.
You will need to have a video converter APP installed, Imovie, or otherwise.

  • Capture videos from rca to usb?

trying to capture videos off the vcr. i'm using an RCA to USB cable. i  don't see the option anywhere. is it a limitation of the trial version  or it's not possible with premiere elements? is there an adobe software that will allow me to capture from my vhs? or do i have to use another software to capture then use PE to edit?

You can't use most low-end capture cards or devices or capture video via USB if you plan to edit it in Premiere Elements, w. The resultant video won't be a format the program can work with.
The FAQs to the right of this forum discuss DV bridges, devices which can capture almost any video as DV-AVIs, the video format Premiere Elements and virtually all PC-based video editors prefer to work with.

  • RCA to USB Problems

I am trying to put some video from my parents camcorder onto my ibook G4 to use it in imovie. However their device is a couple of years old and only has rca audio/video outputs. Just in case it matters they have a Sharp VL-AH30 camcorder.

You can use a dedicated device (Elgato eyeTV 250 and eyetv hybrid are examples).
Or use a camcorder with digital pass-thru. This will convert component video to DV (digital video) and provides a FireWire output for iMovie use.

  • RCA capture cable to Flash Media Live Encoder

    Hi,
Last year I streamed a live event through a capture cable to Flash Media Encoder. Unfortunately I can't locate that cable and cannot remember the model we used. Can anyone advise on the best capture cable to use?
RCA to firewire or RCA to USB?
I have a startech SVID2USB2 cable (with female RCA to USB) which is giving me a blank or green preview window in Flash Media Encoder.
    Would RCA to firewire work?
    Regards Bruce

    Hi Brusca,
I am not sure which capture card are you using. FMLE should work fine with Firewire input and with any capture card that take input from RCA cable. Input throgh USB is generally not preferable for very high quality input.

  • Log and Capturing from USB device?

I have a VHS connected to my G5 using an InterView RCA to USB device. Is it possible to log and capture into FCP5? I seem to be getting the sound okay, but can't get the video.

You can't capture to FCP without timecode.<<</div>
Not true. You can easily capture non-timecoded footage from any number of sources, including VHS. Set FCP's device control to "Non-Controlable Device" and use "Capture Now." The source player will need to be connected to your DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter).
    VHS decks don't generate timecode<<</div>
Also not true. Most pro VHS and S-VHS VTRs have both VITC and LTC capability.

  • Updated to 10.4.5 and now keep getting Kernel Panics

I keep getting a kernel panic at start up, or shortly after reaching the desktop. I have tried both repairing permissions and repairing the start up disk using Apple's Disk Utility. Ran Disk Warrior, and Techtool Pro 4.1.1, all to no avail. No matter what I do I can't seem to rid my hard drive of the kernel panic.
The Kernel Panics started after I installed the OS 10.4.5 PPC Update and the iTunes 6.0.3 update. Prior to installing the updates my machine ran flawlessly with all of the below hardware.

All I can tell you from the panic log is that there's a problem either with the video card and/or the video drivers. You might try the following:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If this doesn't help then visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on kernel panics.

  • Connecting Laptop to Mixer

There seem to be several ways to connect my laptop (MacBook Pro) to my mixer (Yamaha MG166CXUSB) but I don't know which one would be best for just playing into my IEM's.
Using the Search function I've read several suggestions for connecting the two including Headphone to RCA and USB to USB.
I'm using a Roland TD-12 with electronic toms and kick pad to trigger sounds on my laptop (Superior Drummer 2.0 VST's) along with an acoustic snare and cymbals that are mic'ed and connected directly to the mixer.
    Signal path,
    1) Roland TD-12 pads/kick->MIDI to USB cable->Laptop->Mixer->IEM's.
    and....
    2) Mic'ed acoustic snare/cymbals->Mixer->IEM's
On the MBP, I have tried connecting the headphone jack or USB, both seem to work ok. The mixer can receive the signal from my laptop several ways that I know of, what I don't know is which way 'should' it should be connected. So far, all of these connections seem to work (ie I can hear the drums play in my IEM's)....
    1) Headphone out (MBP) to Mixer '2TR In' (RCA Jacks), or
    2) Headphone out to 'Line Input' (TRS Jacks), or
    3) Headphone out to 'Insert' (TRS Jacks), or
    4) Headphone out to 'Line Input' (RCA Jacks).
I can also use the USB 2.0(MBP) to USB 1.1 (Mixer). I think the USB port on the mixer is there more for connecting a computer for recording purposes rather than playing live, I could be wrong though. I know USB 1.1 is rather slow but how does it compare to using the RCA or TRS jacks in terms of speed?
I have a Firewire port on my laptop, should I be using that to connect to the mixer?
I don't have much experience with mixers and I really don't know from reading the manual what the connection should be. I can hear the drums in my IEM's using any of the above, but which connection 'should' I be using?
Here's a list of the connections on the mixer and the corresponding Page/# in the Yamaha Manual.

    That's embarrassing.
it happens more often then you'd expect, don't worry about it.
Does it matter that I'm using the computer's line in rather than a USB/Firewire?
you could debate this for hours, really. a good quality firewire interface could, in theory, get you a better recording, but my stand is that your technique and skill as an engineer will affect the quality of your recordings far more.
in particular, if you're just starting out, you've got a lot to master (recording, mixing and perhaps mastering if you're willing to go that far). concentrate on that. if it sounds good to your ears, then you're fine.
look at it this way, apple has sold, what, over a billion songs via iTunes? most people are quite happy with those, and they are far from high quality. as long as your ears are satisfied, you're gold. if you're not, we can certainly offer suggestions for a FW or USB interface.
(the only other reason would be if you wanted to record more than two tracks at a time, for that you'd want a FW interface for sure)

  • Import from camcorder to Mac

Hey everyone, I've got a bit of a problem here. Here's what I'm trying to do:
I need to import video from a Sony TRV815 Hi-8 camcorder to one of two computers: The first is an eMac running OSX v10.3.9 and iMovie v4.0.1, and the other a Macbook running OSX v10.5.4 and iMovie HD v6.0.3. The eMac has about 30 free GB of hard drive space, whereas the Macbook only has 7. I'm thinking of editing most of the movie on the eMac, then moving the shorter clips to the Macbook to do the final cut w/ effects and music.
The problem is, the camcorder only has regular RCA/S-Video output. I have an ADS Tech Instant VideoMPX RCA-to-USB converter, but I just found out that it was made for use with Windows and not Mac.
Likewise, I also have a Sony DVDirect VRD-VC10 DVD Drive. This only works on Windows, but it also runs standalone, which would allow me to record from the camcorder to a DVD, then rip from the DVD to my hard drive using Handbrake.
Basically what I'm asking is: Is there any way for me to get the video from the camcorder to the Mac, possibly using a program other than iMovie? Thanks!

I don't see your import problem as the biggest obstacle here. Your lack of sufficient hard drive space makes this impossible. DV, the required format for import, will consume 13GB per hour AND you need at least 25GB of extra free space to prevent crashes and freezing of the programme.
    Resolve this problem first.

  • Hook Ipod Touch to tv?

    Hi,
I have a 2nd Gen Touch and the firmware version is 4.0.2 (I believe!). I'd like to get a cord like this, but can't figure out if it would work with my product given the requirements it states. Would it? Should it?
    http://cgi.ebay.com/AV-TV-RCA-Video-USB-Cable-iPhone-3G-iPod-Touch-Nano-/2206677 42890?pt=OtherMP3_PlayerAccessories&hash=item3360d28aaa

iOS 4.0 is referencing a major version "upgrade".
IOS 4.0.2 is referencing the second minor "update" to iOS4.0
iOS 4.1 is the newest/most recent "update" to iOS4.0
    Does that help?
Also, you should be able to find either "component" (RGB+audio) or "composite" (1V2A / RCA / YellowRedWhite) video cables in the Apple Store for about USD $50.00.
You need to know which types of available input connections you have on your TV.
If you have a choice, you should choose component, as that will produce a superior image.
If I remember correctly, that cable includes an additional USB power cable/adapter, so your iPod battery wo t drain/die during playback.
    Have fun with Netflix!!
