RCA vs. S-video

Being that the new displays only work with the new generation MBP's (I think, right?) I found a great compromise.
I'm now looking for a great t.v. that will serve two purposes. Being my television and main display for the MBP. I just need to know who wins the battle? RCA or S-video.
I'm almost positive I'm not the only one who isn't curious about this, so why not post some recommendations on displays? inches and price aren't a big concern. Though I am not Job's himself.

RCA refers to the shape of the plug. There are two common video formats that use RCA: composite and component.
Composite is an analog signal that combines luminance, hue, and saturation on a single cable using a technique called frequency-division multiplexing. The mixing of the signals introduces some distortion and noise which leads to lower picture quality. A modern HDTV will convert the signal to 480i resolution. The aspect ratio of the picture is not transmitted, but it's basically standard 4:3 TV.
S-Video is similar to composite, but uses a 4-pin DIN connector that separates the luminance from the chrominance (hue and saturation) into two different signals. The result is that the signal is clearer and there's more definition. A modern HDTV will convert the signal to 480i resolution. The aspect ratio of the picture is not transmitted, but it's basically standard 4:3 TV.
Component video uses RCA-style connectors like composite video does, but it uses a separate connector for each portion of the signal (again, luminance, hue, and saturation). The result is the highest possible definition for an analog signal, provided the source. It comes in two flavors, but only one is used in modern TVs: YPbPr. This gives the highest definition of any of the analog video formats and the best color reproduction, though perhaps not as true as RGB composite video (what's used in VGA computer monitors). It's standard-definition 480i like the other 2 above.
If you are going to buy a digital TV, however, you probably want to use a digital input. This has the advantage that you can use the native resolution of your digital TV set, have a perfectly sharp picture, and have the maximum range of colors available. There are two common standards found on HDTV sets: DVI and HDMI. HDMI is the most common. DVI is the native standard for Macs prior to the new display-port MacBook Pros. Adapters to go from your Mac to DVI or HDMI are available. The digital standards provide the best possible picture, but at the cost that the cables need to be <15' in length (less than 10' is best).
One thing to note: the resolution and color range of an HDTV is generally much less than that of an LCD monitor, and they typically cost much more (they incorporate tuners and other controls). The highest resolution of an HDTV is going to be 1920x1080@60Hz.

  • Screen says "use tv as display" have vga out and tv has rca or s-video in can I?

I have old ze4935wm laptop with XP
Quick button properties screen says "use tv as display"
It only has vga out and tv only has rca or s-video in.
    How can I do this?

    I solved that problem.
If your tv also has component imputs- the red/ble/green cables that look like ordinary rca cables-
as a matter of fact you can use the regular rca audio/video cables, I do.
Tiger direct has an item called.PC2Tv.
It has a box- (size of a deck of cards) connect the vga wire from the box to your computer,
connect the usb wire from the box to your computer.
Then run the rca cables from the box to your tv.
It comes w/ a remote, you can adjust contrast, color, sharp & brightness, etc.
It's powered by your pc/laptop and cost about $20.
I use one on my patio where the rear projection tv has an hdmi input, but it doesn't work for computers-
the tv's manual says that the hdmi input is just for dvd players.
I also use one in my garage, where I have a crt tv.
    Works perfect.

  • RCA or S-Video connectors for Mac - was (TV tuners are there any?)

    Hi all,
I don't know if this is the right forum for this post, if not please direct me to the right one. Ok, I was wondering if there is any way to hook up my Play Station 2 to my Mac so that I can play the games useing my display? Is there any realtivly inexpencive tv tuner, or something that I can use to hookup eather the RCA (red, yellow, white plugs) or s-video out's on the Play Station 2 to my Mac? Normaly I would hook it up to a TV, but I do not have a TV where I am and wil not for a while. Bellow is a link to the only one that I have been able to find.

    Hello Malcolm,
Thanks for the responce. I did not even think about that. So do think that it would be better for me to get the ATI 9200 video card that has a s-video plug built into it. Bellow is the link to it here on the Apple site. Thanks again and any help will be great.

  • N8 RCA output, No Video!

    Hi!
I wanted to see some videos on my TV, so I tried to use a 3.5mm Jack - RCA cable I had at home.
I set the TV out option as default, left the default TV settings (Normal size, PAL code, and Unactive filter) and plugged the cable.
On a CRT TV I see a stream of blinking white stripes and no audio.
On a LCD TV I get the "no signal" message all the way, and audio works fine.
    Am I doing something wrong?
(The cable is not a Nokia cable, but as far as I know those cables are all the same, isn't it?)

Okay, it was my cable architecture that was kinda stupid, trying to play a stereo song, I figured out that the 2 audio cables, were a mono sound duplicated... So my phone seeing only 2 channels thought that they were a stereo output. To be sure of that I plugged the yellow cable (the video one) in an audio input (red or white), and the output was a sound signal!
I went to a friend's to ask him to borrow me his CA-75U, and everything works fine!
I'm sorry for this nearly useless topic

  • ?? I thought there was a mac-mini, DVI to RCA /S-video adapter. If no, can I get 37.5mhz on display to composite video out?a composite video

?? I thought there was a mac-mini, DVI to RCA /S-video adapter. If not can display be set to 37,5 hertz then my crt can accept composite video. Thanks.

    12. Can I output via Mini DisplayPort to an RCA or S-Video connection?
No. The Mini DIsplayPort connector allows output to Mini DisplayPort, DisplayPort, VGA, DVI, and HDMI connections when using the proper cables and adapters. However, output to RCA, Component, or S-Video connections is not supported.
    But see:

  • Satellite P300-18M - VGA to S-Video / RCA cable - No Picture on TV

    Hi,
First of all, I am trying to use my other laptop (Dell Lattitude D630) I with my TV, however, this other laptop only has a VGA output.
So I bought a VGA to S-Video and RCA adapter from e-Bay: [Picture|http://members.lycos.co.uk/jtfearnley/Hosting/Images/RCA%20To%20S-Video%20RCA.jpg]
However, this does not work, the laptop in question does have "TV Out through VGA", so it should work according to various websites, and the seller....
However, I then tried to test it with my Satellite P300-18M, and it does not work with this either, I have tried both the composite (yellow port) and S-video port, in three different TV's, and there is no picture.
I have tried changing the settings in the ATI Catalyst Controll Centre, eg, forcing TV detection, and it detects the TV, however there is no picture on the TV, only grey lines.
If I cange the resoution and Refresh rate I can sort of get an image: [TV Picture|http://members.lycos.co.uk/jtfearnley/Hosting/Images/TV.jpg]
But this is the best thing.
In the past I have used all three television sets with my P300 using direct S-Video, so I do not understand why it will not work with this adapter.
Also, I know that this isn't a Dell forum, but I am not a member there, and this question is also concerning my Toshiba notebook, as it would be useful to be able to use the adapter for RCA instead of S-Video.
    Thanks

    Hi
From my knowledge the VGA port can be used only in connection with an external monitor/LCD but not with the TV.
The point is that the common PAL TV (not LCD or plasma) supports a max resolution of 720 X 576px at 50Hz (NTSC 720 X 480 at 60Hz).
As far as I know only the s-video port provides such resolution.
The VGA port provides higher resolutions which are supprted by most external monitors.
However, I never connected the notebook to TV via VGA port so I can provide only some assumptions.
Of course it could be possible that the VGA to S-Video and RCA adapter is not fully compatible.
I read on different pages that cheap no-name adapters dont work as it should.

  • S-Video to Digital TVA RCA ports

I have a V5000 3 yr old Compaq Presario notebook and I am trying to connect a 4 pin S video cable (with an audio line) from the notebook s-video jack to the RCA ports on a sony digital TV.  The sound comes through, but no picture.  When I hit function F4 there is a flicker, but no picture on  the TV.
I also tried the dual monitor in Display to no avail.
Any ideas?  Anything that needs to be changed in the setup?

I have an older Analog-to-Digital/Digital-to-Analog converter box I bought many years ago to do just what you describe under Windows.  It has RCA and S-video in as well as firewire in, then it also has the same on the output side.  This allows me to take an alaog video signal in through this boix and send it to my computer to capture using my sodftware of choice.  WHen I first bought the box, I was using a Dell laptop & Vegas Video (version 4 to date it).  Now I am using my MacBook Pro and iMovie (it came free with the OS X 10.7 license).
The devie I bought was from Pinnacle, and I believe they are still in business, but I don't seem to see the firewire devices any more.  They do still have plenty of USB ones, but you will relly want the Firewire if you can get it...

  • Using Front Panel Composite Video 2 RCA Jack on the HP m8000 Media Center PC

I have a HP M8000 Computer with front panel RCA jacks, composite video 2 and Left and Right Audio RCA jacks.  I have been unable to determine how to select  these jacks for inputting video recordings to the computer.  Any ideas on how to use these jacks to input video from my VCR?

The front composite video jacks did not have software support for the release of this PC.  The analog video software was not compatible with Windoze-Vista so there was no software given with this PC model that supported analog video input.

  • Audio bad: Sony analog video, RCAs into converter, firewire into PowerBook

    Using iMovie HD 5.0.2 and OS X 10.4.9 on a PowerBook G4.
Importing video from a Sony analog video camera by running an RCA cable for video and an RCA cable for audio from the Sony camera into a Formac converter. From the converter I run a FireWire line into the PowerBook. With this set-up, iMovie captures the video okay, but the audio is only a rapid buzz; sounds like a perfectly regular square wave.
I can confirm that the audio signal is being sent from the Sony camera through the converter and on into the FireWire cable by using the same hardware set-up but using Final Cut Express to capture the movie. But I don't want to work in FCE, I want to work in iMovie.
What might be going wrong with the audio capture in iMovie?
    several   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
As far as I remember, some of the Formacs (..I've never used one, but there was talk of this here..) exhibited this "chainsaw buzz" around the time that iMovie was upgraded to Version 4, I think.
(..Something to do with Formac's non-stringent interpretation of the Firewire spec, perhaps..)
Formac did post info about it on their website, and offered two kinds of upgrade; a firmware download/upgrade for some models ..which you could do yourself.. and a factory upgrade for others.
I don't know if they still offer either of these options, sorry..

  • Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter

I have just purhased a new Macbook. My first mac ever
My question is regardng the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter.
Do I read that correctly that I can hook my macbook up via rca and s-video but not composite? Does Apple make one cable that will do both?
I would like the ability to hook up to a projector which will likely be composite. As well RCA/S-video via t.v or DVD inputs.
    Thanks
    Tig

For VGA you will need the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter. For composite video you will need the Mini-DVI to video adapter. If you want sound while using the video adapter you will need a 3.5mm to rca stereo cable. This is a y cable like this Example of 3.5mm to RCA Y cable
FYI the RCA output on the video adapter is composite video.

  • Mini-dvi to video does not work

I have the 13-inch white macbook purchased in 2008. I just bought a mini-dvi to video cord and tried hooking it up to my TV using RCA and S-video and neither work. When I plug the cord into my computer, the resolution on my computer changes and then when I plug it into my TV it does not appear on the TV. When I change the display resolution on my computer to the lowest option, I can see the display from the computer on the TV rapidly moving across the screen and it is extremely distorted and doesn't appear to have any color. I chose detect displays and this did not do anything. Am I doing something wrong? Why won't my computer image display on the TV?

I also have the same issue. SVideo / RCA adapter purchased from Fry's Electronics. Apple Brand. Worked the week I bought it, and after a couple of updates, stopped being reliable.
Now, after some trial and error, I can get it to work, its just painfully convoluted.
The trick for my system is to keep trying it, (re-seating the adapter at the mini-dvi connection) and eventually it works.
Iv found that It only works when it "latches" to the video adapter instantly.
Sometimes its 3 times. Sometimes its 15. Quite random.
Seeing as how I don't like watching movies on a 13" screen. I just have to be patient.
I have been searching/waiting for some kind of apple firmware, or video adapter update that adresses this, as I dont believe its anything more than a software bug.
Any useful info would be much appreciated.
