RD480 Neo2-Fi Bios-level Overclocking with Opteron 165

I have an inquiry regarding my ability to overclock my CPU (Opteron 165) with the RD480 Neo2-Fi motherboard via the motherboard.  The settings for FSB, CPU voltage, Chipset Voltage, Ram Voltage are all locked out on the latest revision of the bios (V3.20).  I am wondering whether this is simply an issue in that the Opteron 165 was just recently added to the list of supported CPU's (it works perfectly at the stock settings and o'c settings through CoreCenter) and the CPU ID just hasn't been added to the last bios.  The overclocking options available to me through CoreCenter (which I dislike using very much, as it is very buggy and simply ugly) are all available and fully functional although somewhat limited(obviously you cannot change core voltage).  If anyone has any advice please reply.

  • K8t Neo2 won't run dual channel with Opteron 165

    Hi,
I have a K8t Neo 2, and was running a Newcastle 3500+ on it, with 2x1GB PC3200 memory sticks (Buffalo memory) in dual channel mode (ie DIMM 1 and DIMM 3 populated) without any problems.  I replaced the 3500+ with a new Opteron 165, and the system would not post.  One of the red lights on the D-bracket was red, the rest were out.
To troubleshoot, I removed one of the memory sticks, and the system booted fine.  I then put the 2nd memory stick in a non-dual channel setup (DIMM 1 and DIMM 2 populated), and it booted fine.  If I try booting the system with the RAM in any dual channel enabled configuration, it will not post.  I verified that it isn't a RAM issue, because I have 2 sticks of 512 MB ShikaXRam, which has always worked fine, and I got the same behavior as I got with the Buffalo RAM.  I have tried changing the RAM clocking in the BIOS, and that also doesn't help, because it seems it reads the speed automatically no matter what you set the DRAM clocking page to.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Is this board not Opteron 165 compatible with dual channel memory?

Alright, I tried all of the steps mentioned, setting optimized defaults, even tried changing all memory timings to the most conservative available.  The only way the system will boot with 2 DIMMs installed is if they are in the two slots furthest from the CPU.  It will also post with 3 DIMMs installed in any configuration.
I also have a generic 500 w PSU that is rated 32a on the 12v rail that I tried quickly plugging in (just plugged the 2 PSU connectors to the motherboard without hooking any of the IDE devices to it)  It still exhibits the same behaviour.  With no hard drives, optical drives, etc plugged in, wouldn't that pretty much eliminate the PSU as an issue?
I don't want to just spend $100 on a new PSU if it's highly unlikely to be the issue.  Does this sound like something I'd need to replace the motherboard to fix?  Is the performance difference between dual channel and single channel enough to even warrant buying a new board?  The reason I want to avoid replacing the board right now is because I still have an AGP card, and don't want to replace it right now as well as the board, and getting another AGP based board seems to be stupid.  Also, AGP boards are really hard to find now, and most of them available locally run on the ULi chipset

  • RD480 Neo2-FI only detects 3 out of 4 gigs of memory HELP!!

Hi guys, I just put together a barebones PC from Tigerdirect. I have 4 1024Mb sticks of ULTRA DDR400 memory, the bios and operating system will only detect 3. I have swapped the sticks around, removed one at a time, ect, and they all seem to work by themselves. Has anyone had an issue like this before? My troubleshooting has been limited as I feel consulting with this forum for ideas is probably better then a day of easter egging the problem. Here are my specs. The Bios is the original that came with the board. I havent updated it because I havent heard of any update fixing this problem nor do I have a floppy drive and the MSI update utility is incompatible with the 64 bit version of windows.
-Motherboard type and model (MSI 7194, RD480 Neo2 FI)
-Bios type and revision (American MegaTrends Version 8.12, SMBIOS/DMI Version 2.30) From SISsandra
-CPU type and model (AMD Athlon 64 3700 SanDiego Core Socket 939)

thanks any help is better then no help...I'm hoping I am just missing a setting or something..thanks again,
    Gene

I think this may be an issue with the processor not the motherboard.  Athlon 64 processors have the memory controller built-in on the cpu.  I dont think the 939 socket A64 rev E6 memory controller can support 8 banks (4 double-sided ddr modules) at 400 MHz.  Try to manually force the memory speed to 266 MHz or 333 MHz and you may be able to access all 4gb of ram.
EDIT: I looked around a little and I see suggestions that the problem of being able to max out the banks at 400mhz was already remedied by the E6 revision memory controller, so this may not be helpful  Earlier cores had significant memory controller constraints and could not run 4 gb unless you turned down the memory speed or ran single-sided ram (most 512mb and 1gb  modules are dual-sided).

  • MSI RD480 Neo2 : HT Link Speed

I've just discovered the HT Link Speed limitation in the current 3.2 bios for the MSI RD480 Neo2 and was wondering if MSI is able/going to fix this issue? and add if possible the 2x,3x,4x,etc HTT links??
Previously this was not an issue since i had an AMD Athlon 3400 (with an AMD set 4x HTT multiplier), this created a HT link of 1,000Mhz when running my cpu/memory to 250 mhz. However with my newer X2 4200 which is factory set at 5x, I'm hitting the HT max mhz limit pretty quick..
For the moment i can set the HT Link from Auto to 200, however the limited bandwidth is really chocking the system.
    Regards,

    Thanks for the reply Bosskiller.
In the RD480 3.2 bios there are only two options for HT Links. Auto and 200...  (it's interesting, the popup menu gives the feel that there was plans for more options.)
From my testing, "auto" seems to take the HT speed burned in by AMD. (800 HT (4x) or 1000 HT (5x))
I've dropped the cpu divider down to x8 on the x2 4200 (11x factory) and the memory divider to 166 speed (i've ran this pc4000 at 250mhz ddr with this exact mb, just with the single core 3400 (800 HT 4x) cpu. But just to take them out of this issue.
    (auto)
    215 = 1079.4
    220 = 1104
    225 = 1129
    230 = 1153.8
235 = bios hard lock... (cmos reset)
    (200)
235 = 235 (boots just fine, currently running prime on the cpu's.)

  • New Radeon 5770 1GB and old MSI RD480 Neo2 motherboard incompatible?

    Hi,
Am having problems getting my machine to post after inserting a new graphics card: Sapphire Radeon 5770 1Gb.  Have no problems with my old card in the PCI-E slot (X800GTO) - it works fine.  But when I insert the 5770, the machine won't even post.
The core of my machine is ~4 years old, with a MSI MS-7194 RD480 Neo2 motherboard.  I've updated the PSU to a Corsair 650W and as the light on the graphics card is on and ATI recommend a 450W PSU I doubt it's a power issue (and yes, I have attached a PCI-E power lead to the 5770)...
Is the issue that my motherboard is too old? Or is there a newer BIOS for it? I tried the MSI LiveUpdate tool which said there wasn't.
So I'm a bit stumped! Am in the process of putting a new machine together, but can only buy 1 or 2 parts each month - I was hoping to make the most of the graphics card before I had to cough up for a new CPU/Mobo!
All help gratefully received - thanks!
    PS
    Here are my system details:
    Mobo: MSI MS-7194 1A RD480 Neo2
    Bios: 26/2/2006 version (from msinfo32)
    CPU: Athlon 64 X2 3800+
    RAM: Crucial, 4x512Mb
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 1Gb VaporX (no drivers installed as machine won't even post!)
    PSU: Corsair TX650W +3.3V: 24A, +5V: 30A, +12V: 50A. Max combined +3.3/+5: 170W.
    HD: SATA1: WesternDigital 200GB, SATA2: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB.
    DVD-RW Sony IDE0, DVD-ROM Sony IDE1
    OS: Windows XP SP2

There has been an on going problem with that model # in general and that brand & model in particular not working on a wide variety of MB's. On some MB's that have 2 16x slots it will not work in slot 1 but will in slot 2.

  • RD480-Neo2 FI RAM issues

    Greetings,
I've come across a bit of a RAM problem and I'm hoping someone can help me with it. I've had an RD480-Neo2 FI motherboard with an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ CPU for about two years. Originally I had 2 1gb sticks of OCZ PC3200 DDR in slots 1 and 3. The box has been rock solid the whole time running XP x64. This week I purchased the exact same 2 stick matched set to upgrade to 4gb total. However, when I first installed the two new sticks in slots 2 and 4, I was getting nothing at all when turning on the PC. No beeps, no video, etc. After some fiddling I was able to get it to boot (still not sure what was wrong) but both BIOS and Windows XP only displayed 3gb total, and I was having some serious stability issues culminating in a BSOD. I ran Memtest and was seeing some pretty horrific failures.
So I took 3 sticks out and tested each stick one at a time in slot 1, all passed. Then I took 1 stick and tested it in the other 3 slots. In slot 2 and 4, I'm getting failures on the 7th and final test, "Moving inv, ones & zeroes, no cache." I assume these slots have just been bad since the mobo was new since I've never used it before, now I've learned something I need to test in the future when buying new mobos. Was this a valid test to perform? IE, is it possible to test these slots without RAM in slots 1 and 3? If not, is there some other way I can test this to make sure this is the problem? I don't expect that MSI can really do anything for me a year outside the warranty period, and I wasn't planning on spending money on a new mobo right now...

    Hello!
I have not a ready and final answer to your question, but here is a good start to help you help yourself.  Please read the FAQ:s about memory you find here:
    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodfaq&prod_no=219&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=
A summary might be that nothing is wrong with your motherboard still, but that your combination of sticks winds up in a problematic situation.
PSU details, too, please. Two years is a long time, and wear and tear and dust is always something to look out for.

  • 945P NEO2-F bios update

    Hello! I need an advice.
I have the 945P Neo2-f mainboard and Pentium D 805 processor. I noticed there is a recent bios update for 945G Neo2-f that resolves the compatibility issues with Pentium D 805 but there is still no update for 945P Neo2-f.
My question for a moderator or msi support staff is - Do you know when will an update for 945P NEO2-F be done?
I also heard that the bios from 945P and 945G match. I don't know if that is true but if it is, can I use the new 945G bios to flash it to my 945P board?
How much does those BIOS' differ?
Also is there a way to read the bios from cmos on the mainboard?
    Thank you for any help.

    Hi everyone!!!!
Sorry for my bad english i'm french...
I've tryed to overclock with this mobo(7176-945P NEO2-F) and i've got different problems!!!
1.With the original bios, settings for FSB can be saved, but not on the new one!!!!
        I'ved done max 218 FSB!!!and won't boot....I'ved done 265fsb same cpu but with an ABIT AA8XE!!!
    2.Can't really control RAm settings!!!!
3.Core center limit the fsb to 11% more, need really more than 11%.....Wake up MSI!!!LOL!!
and the bios can take the value of 500mhz!!!!May be someone can move up this value by patch the software....
4.Clockgen can work on this bord,i've done it using a close ppl....
I've read on this forum that someone have flash is board with 945g bios!!!the lastest....Any one else i'ved try this???
I've read somewhere that 945g support conroe!!!!May be with this bios 7176 can to.......

  • Biometrics Log-In For HP Envy Laptops Should be at the BIOS Level

The Biomentrics Login for the HP Envy Laptop is Implemented in Windows 8.1 and is Effective only for Login Security to the Windows 8.1 OS --
If we have a Multi-Boot System ... anyone can break in still into your Laptop or System by simply Rebooting the System and accessing one of the other Partitions --
It would perhaps be a better security mechanism if this Biometrics Login feature was also implemented at the BIOS
Level with the additional Flag to enable or Disable for the User if so desires !!
    Cheers !!

    Hi,
    Have we tried the
    printer troubleshooter?
Meanwhile, please enable the Operational log of the PrintService, follow the below steps:
    1.   Open
    Event Viewer
    2.   Expand
    Application and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\PrintService.
    3.   Right-click
    Operational and choose Enable Log.
Note: The PrintService Operational Log will log a great number of events on a busy print server and should only be enabled for troubleshooting purposes. Disable the log once troubleshooting is completed.
You can increase the log file size if necessary to accommodate the amount of data you need to collect to troubleshoot your situation.
For more troubleshooting information, we might take a look at the following TechNet blog(The method could also be used in Windows 8):

  • K9ND Speedster board won't work with opteron 2212

    Hello,
Does anybody know if this board is compatible with opteron 2212? I am building a computer and when I plug both cpu's all I get is a black screen. If I plug in one cpu (it does not matter which one) the system boots.
Has anybody built a PC with this board using dual CPUs (Opteron 2212)?  I checked the numbers and I have a matching pair. Am I missing something? I checked MSI's Qualified Vendor List and I don't see this particular CPU. They only show Opteron 2210, 2216, 2218, and 2220, does that mean that I can only used the CPU's on this list?
    Please help!
Here is the link for the motherboard that I have. I have the workstation type, which does not have a built in VGA.

How are placed your memory sticks?
Do you use 8pin CPU power cable rather than 4pin?
Hello, thanks for the fast replies.
My memory sticks are placed in DIMM one and two of CPU 0 and it's working with one CPU. If I plug in both CPUs with I memory stick on each (DIMM ONE) or 2 sticks (DIMM one and two) the system does not boot.
I also noticed that If  i plug in the 4 stick (4gb) of RAM in CPU 0 the system does not boot either.
Quote from: Hans on 24-August-08, 06:47:28
Let's go simple with this one:
    1. The bios is NOT the isue here. 1.3 simply works with the 2212.
    2. You installed your stuff onto another K9ND Speedster and that booted. Was it a K9ND Speedster V1 or V2 that your friend has?
    3. The board was RMA'd, right? Are you 100% sure that you didn't receive the same board back as you sent? Did you mark the old board in a way that you can actually tell that it was the one you RMA'd?
    * Yes, I installed all the stuff to my friend's board and the same thing happened. He bought the board at the same place... :(
    * Yes the board  was RMA'd. I am sure that I got another one because the first board that I had before did not work with one CPU plugged in either and the new one does.
Quote from: Bas on 24-August-08, 22:22:54
You did connect all power-plugs properly did you?
Yes, I did. I plugged in the 24pin and the other next to it 8 pin.
Do you guys have any idea what could be wrong? Is it something that I have to change in the set up to tell the bios to accept 2 cpus or igb memory sticks? or is there something I have to change in the board on the board?
I really appreciate your help and effort. Thank you.

When MSI could update 6330's BIOS ?

My Geforce card is running well on win32 system. So It will be in order.
I use the offical FC4 release, also the kernel is FC4's release version 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4. The Nvidia's driver is recompiled with Kernel's(2.6.11-1.1369_FC4) source, So there is no compatibility problem. There is no problem on compile-time, But errored while loading nvidia.ko.
As I know MSI-6330 had BIOS peoblem working with Geforce card historically, According to the BIOS update notes:
e.g.: on 2000-09-13 relaseed v1.5 BIOS to fix problem on Geforce 256 and MX card
e.g.: on 2001-08-03 released v2.9 BIOS to fix problem on Geforce2 AGP card ( I use this card )
So It already released serval BIOS updates up to v3.6, I'm afraid there are some hidden problems.

  • Is the K8NGM2-FID compatible with Opterons ?

    Hello,
I intend to buy the MSI K8NGM2-FID motherboard and I would like to know if it is compatible with Opteron 144 ? And what bios version is necessary ?
    Thanks.

After the day I had yesterday I have to say it is not compatible with any 939 pin Opterons.
I spent all day yesterday trying to install Windows 2003 SBS on a MSI K8NGM2-FID with an Opteron 148.  It almost appears to work until you go to set up Exchange and the Fax services, but looking at the event log it is obvious Windows wasn't installed properly.
I reloaded the system 4 times before I swapped the Opteron for an Athlon64.  Installlation completed without a issue using the A64.
I noticed on MSI website that they haven't tested any 939 pin Opterons yet.  When will this happen?

  • No Overclock with PT880 and SATA

OK----well it happened to me too!!!  No overclock with SATA RAID......
Board loaded WinXP like a dream----seems fast as heck----everthing as smooth as glass-----is VERY stable at stock speeds.
    Then I tried to overclock......
    201 FSB was all I could get-----RIDICULOUS!
Have fooled a little with voltages----no go
Will try Vlink settings tomorrow-----am tired and ticked off
Have been doing everything from Bios----will try the dynamic overclocking and core cell tomorrw as well.
Something is not right--------I emailed MSI and will call them as well on Monday.
Am also going to search the Abit forum and see if they have the same problem because if they do-----it's probably a chipset problem------if they don't------it's an MSI problem.
Maybe give VIA a call as well-----this board has so much potential for a $59 expense.
    If it would just overclock.....
Guess you get what you pay for......
    Wish me luck------John

OK----I hosed Windows for the second time last night playing with this board.
Beta Bios 1.42 DID NOT fix the Bios overclocking problem with SATA.
ANY overclock over 220 FSB (at least with my setup) is VERY dicey.  I crashed in windows and no matter what I try----it will not boot. -----Clear CMOS, F8, Last Known Good Config, etc. nothing-----it just restarts.
No big deal----I just rebuild the array and reload Windows------and do Windows update----but it costs me a couple of hours each time.  I won't load any real aps except benchmark applications on this machine till I'm satisfied Ive got stable settings.
    Things I've learned:
I really like "Core Cell"----it's actually a pretty good little overclocking app.  Be careful of the "Auto" setting----for me, it worked once----the 2d time I tried it was when I hosed Windows.  It is supposed to start overclocking your board moving the FSB up 1 Mghtz at a time till it finally is unstable and crashes.  Then it saves the last good setting which was stable.  Then it will use that setting at Startup when the computer boots.
Worked great the first time------I upped my voltages and tried again-----the computer got to 227 FSB and froze----it never recovered.
I haven't been able to check yet if "Dynamic Overclocking" works----or has any value----will try that once I get windows up and running again.
Am starting to get a pretty good "feel" for this board.
Am thinking a stable overclock of around 220 FSB which is dissappointing for a 2.4c----but you know what, a 3.0c or a 2.8c might be perfect for this board.  With the higher multiplier of a 3.0c (15)------a 220 FSB puts you to to 3.3 Mghtz, which is SUPER for a low cost setup----- and you can find 3.0c's for less than $200 now-----and the low price of this board makes a 3.0c very affordable.  I would think the same applies to a Prescott 2.8 or 3.0----but I have no experience with that CPU.
Bottom line-----get yourself this board----an OEM or used 3.0c, cheap RAM that will overclock to DDR 450 with fairly decent timings (most mid-line PC3200 will do that just fine) a $12 Firewire Card and a couple of cheaper Samsung or Hitachi SATA drives to run in RAID 0 as well as a used ATI 9700Pro or 9800Pro off of eBay----and you got yourself a cheap "Barn Burner"  A machine that will run with the big dogs----for about $200-300 less
Here are some additional thoughts so far....
    1. Pretty darn good board for the price!
    2.  I'm not sure VIA's new AGP/PCI lock works----or works as expected.
    3.  Default voltages seem to be low for this board-----raising almost every voltage adds to stability greatly.
    4.  Although I have not benched it-----my SATA RAID (64K Stripe) seems tremendously fast.  Small files copy so fast----that nothing even appears on the screen-----it happens so quickly----you think the computer hasn't performed the operation----but sure enough----the file has been copied.
    5.  Sound seems VERY good and has LOW CPU utilzation for an onboard solution.
Waiting to hear back from MSI and VIA----and will play with this board some more tonight.
    John

  • Overclocking with a cheap ram module.

Hi mi question is as follows, i'm a happy owner of a k7n2 delta2 lsr, and a not so hapy owner of a sempron 2400+,
this is a new world for me cus the last mobo i had was the k7n2 delta with an athlon 2000+ oced to 2000Mhz with no problems.
This new system i have present one problem from the start, the multiplier of the sempron seems to be locked or something because i can't move it just remains in 10 and that's it.
Also for the memory i have found the solution buying a 512Mb DDR 400 Markvision value stick but by doing this i loose the dual channel feature. I have done this because in theory i should be able to overclock with a little more space without the dual channel stress (remember that i have a cheap memory) and in theory i should be able to get the 200Mhz fsb without any problems playing with core and mem voltages and timings and that's where i need your help guys!, i need a few ideas about timing configurations, also voltages to get the best overclocking possible based on the system i have.
Also if you have any other crazy ideas feel free to post them here so i can try them in my rig, let's say that my rig is open for testing
    new ideas.

Now the question has become an answer by itself, in some cases if you're lucky as i was you will get a memory module as cheap as markvision is and also with good quality, here are the result of my tests and what I have achieved:

    high performance mode = Manual
    Dynamic Overclocking = Disabled
    CPU voltage = 1.65V
    MEM voltage = 2.60V
    AGP Voltage = 1.50V
    Adjust CPU FSB = 210Mhz
    Adjust CPU RATIO = Default
    CPU Interfase = Optimal
    Adjust DRAM Freq = 1:1
    Memory timings = Manual (8-3-3-2.5)
This settings drops 2100Mhz in windows and tested with AMDcpuid it drops 2133Mhz stable, tested with prime95 for 12 hours in priority 9
and tested with memtest86 for another 12 hours, no errors, the temperature is quite low which amaze me because i'm only using
the stock heatsink fan (idle 38 - load 43). It is very important for me to say that i was able to achieve this OC by downgrading the
bios version of my delta2 down to B3.0 the B4.0 was really unstable for some unknown reason.

  • MSI RD480 Neo2-FI

Hi, I have a MSI RD480 Neo2-FI, that presents/displays the following problem, when I connect a sata hard disk mother board does not recognize it because it does not appear in the sata list of devices, when I am going to install winxp I install driver that it brings in disket but when beginning the installation says that there is no device where to install win and it leaves to me the installation, if somebody can help me would thank for it , my english is not perfect, sorry...but they answer to me better in Spanish  , thanks...

Likely that one of four things is wrong.
PSU does not have enough 12v amps... Should be 24 or more amps on the 12v rail for even a small A64 system.
Bad process to setup the drive or a bad driver.
    Bad Drive
    Bad MB
Those are pretty much in order of how they would be checked by a tech as well.
If you have a freind with a machine that uses SATA maybe you can test that drive as there is little you will do on your own to test it.
