  • Connecting to a RDBMS on Windows Platform from a Linux Java Client.

    Hi All,
I want to connect to the SQL Server 7.0 (or for that matter of fact any RDBMS) running on Windows NT environment from my Java Client on Linux. From the web, i came to know that we can use ODBC Drivers on Linux but not sure how to implement this.
Could you guys please help me in solving my problem ??
Even links to the articles on the web would be great.
    Thanks,
    Gaurav.

Use the JDBC driver for SQL Server from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/SQL/downloads/2000/jdbc.asp. Alternatively, you can use the drivers from http://www.freetds.org and http://www.thinweb.com

ORA-01078 failure in processing system parameters..
i've exported oracle base, oracle home, oracle sid.
In the server i 've 2 db instances, but to launch dbca i've set the sid of the interested instance for the modify.
    What's goin' on?
    Could someone help me?
    Thanks...

Do you refer to parameters in the init.ora or the parameters that I export with my environment on launching dbca?
And which parameters could cause this issue.. My db is up and running and I need to run dbca only for add java enabled option and sample schemas..

  • Is ORACLE slower on Windows then on Linux ?

    Hi,
I'm suppose to choose the platform for Oracle .... Linux or Windows 2008 Server ...
Ones we've installed Oracle on Windows 2003 Server and it was really slower like 200-300% ..... we did simple default install
Does anyone know if this is a fact that Oracle will run slower on Windows platform then on any other ? Any experiance with that ? If we are talking about 5-10% then this is ok and I'll stick with windows ...
Cause I know how to deal with windows much more then how to deal with Linux admin, install and other stuff ...
    Thank you...

Also, I've seen high demand screensavers (fractals) clobber Oracle performance . . .
Oracle on Windows uses a thread modelThat's actually one of the few "positives" about running Oracle on Windows . . .
rather than providing a performance comparison between Linux and Windows.Fine, try here:

"Roby Sherman performed an exhaustive study of the speed of Oracle on Linux and Microsoft Windows using identical hardware. Sherman currently works for Qwest Communications in the data technologies group of IT architecture and transversal services. He is a recognized expert in designing, delivering, tuning, and troubleshooting n-tier systems and technology architecture components of various size and complexity based on Oracle RDBMS technology.
Sherman concludes that Linux was over 30% faster:
"From perspective of performance, RedHat Linux 7.2 demonstrated an average performance advantage of 38.4 percent higher RDBMS throughput than a similarly configured Windows 2000 Server in a variety of operational scenarios." Sherman also notes: "Another point of contention was Window's lack of consistency between many database administrative functions (e.g., automated startup, shutdown, service creation, scripting) compared to what DBAs are already used to in many mainstream UNIX environments (e.g., Solaris and HP-UX)."
Mr. Burleson's comments seem to be out of line. No, I'm right on the money.
*I've seen enough companies get burned by Windows (unplanned outages, data corruption) to speak with confidence.*
Bottom line, it's malfeasence to recommend any OS platform for a production database application that has an unsavory history.
It does not take a genius to figure out that an OS with this kind of history should not be used with any data that you care about:
    - "blue screen of death"
    - legandary security vulnerabilities
    - memory leaks you could drive a truck through
    - Patching weekly

Good point on the screen saver.
Comparing Windows 2000, released in March 2000, with Red Hat 7.2 which was released in ... sorry, forgot the date, but I put in a couple servers running that release of Linux into service in 2001. I was kind of hoping that you would have an article which pits Windows 3.1 against the original Linux release. :-)
You might be happy to know that things have changed significantly since Windows 3.1, and also significantly since Windows 2000. There were many improvements in Windows 2003 over Windows 2000 (I happened to read a couple large books on the subject of Windows 2003 Server a couple years ago). This page contains a couple links that you may want to browse:

Regarding blue screen of death, those are rather rare with versions of Windows since the release of Windows 2000. The last blue screen that I saw on a server happened when an ECC memory module started experiencing multiple hardware bit errors which could not be corrected by the ECC memory logic. The server hardware forced the blue screen to prevent data corruption. The previous blue screen? A Windows NT 4.0 Server (circa 1996) when a new RAID controller was added to the server.
Regarding legandary security vulnerabilities, well I don't think that it quite qualifies as legendary. However, given the wide usage of Windows (particularly by people just starting to learn to use computers), there will very definitely be more security issues to contend with - Windows often offers a larger attack surface than other operating systems. Yes, there have been many security problems over the years.
Regarding memory leaks you could drive a truck through, I have to say that in a server environment I have not experienced that problem. On a desktop environment, I would say that it is typically the fault of poorly written applications which cause the memory leaks. Windows will often clean up after the poorly written applications when they are closed.
Regarding patching weekly, yes there are typically frequent security and bug fixes released for the Windows platform, but I suggest that if someone is patching weekly on a server, there is probably a larger problem to be addressed.
Regarding the world's most incompetant tech support, I am not sure that I follow your logic:
    define:incompetant

    "Did you mean: define:incompetent
No definitions were found for incompetant.
    Suggestions:
    - Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
    - Search the Web for documents that contain 'incompetant'"
As previously stated, consideration should be given to the operating system which is most familiar to the OP.

  • Oracle 11gR2 certification for Oracle Linux 6

    Hello,
According to Oracle documentation, database certification and support for Oracle 11gR2 under Oracle Linux starts with 11.2.0.3.
I was wondering if this might have anything to do with the i386 software prerequisites. Speaking of Oracle 11gR2 x86_64, the need for i386 libraries was removed with 11gR2 11.2.0.2. Or in other words, one can go straight to 11.2.0.2 without the need to install any 32-bit libraries.
Under Oracle Linux 5 x86_64, the "oracle-validated" package triggers the installation of several i386 packages. Under Oracle Linux 6 x86_64, the oracle-rdbms-server-11gr2-preinstall package uses x86_64 only. Under Oracle Linux 6, i386 changed to i686.
For what it's worth, I have installed Oracle 11gR2 database 11.2.0.1 under Oracle Linux 6.1 to 6.3, both x86_64, simply by using the oracle-rdbms-server-11gr2-preinstall package, and so far have not noticed any problems. Is there some information available, why 11.2.0.1 (x86_64) should not be used or is not certified for Oracle Linux 6 (x86_64)?
    Thanks.

I was afraid of that. Since the question is Oracle Linux 6 specific, I thought I'd try my luck here, thinking that if I get an answer, then probably here. Maybe it was not very realistic to get an answer anyway.
For what it's worth. Using "oracle-validated" under Oracle Linux 5, and "oracle-rdbms-server-11gR2-preinstall" under Oracle Linux 6, I was able to install Oracle 11gR2 11.2.0.1 just fine, both platforms x86_64 and 32-bit. I have not found any operational issues yet and it seems to run perfectly well.
The only trouble I had was with Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.1, and here 11.2.0.3 is indeed required for it to install. I made a custom patch, just a few lines and after that 11.2.0.1, both x86_64 and 32-bit installed just fine and is fully operational.
I'm though I could post the patch. I guess it might make those people happy who do not have access to Oracle support and download 11.2.0.3. The patch will allow them to use the 11gR2 OTN version and install it under Oracle Linux 6. It won't be certified, but it is good enough for the purpose of education.
    I'm closing the thread.

  • Character sets - UTF8 or Chinese

    Hi,
I am looking into enhancing the application I have built in Oracle to save/display data in Chinese & English. I have looking into how to change the character set of a database to accept different languages i.e. different characters.
From what I understand I can create a database to use a Chinese character set (apparently English ascii characters are also a part of any Chinese character set) or I can set the database to use a unicode multi-byte character set (UTF8) - which seems to be okay for all languages.
Has anyone had any experience of a) changing an existing standard 7 byte ascii database into database which can handle Chinese and/or b) the difference/ implications between using a Chinese and unicode character sets.
I am using Oracle RDBMS 8.1.7 on SuSE Linux 7.2
    Thanks in advance.
    Dan

If the data is segmented so that character set 1 data is in a table and character set 2 data is in another table then you may have a chance to salvage the data with help from support. The idea would be to first export and import only your CL8MSWIN1251 data to UTF8. Be careful that your NLS_LANG is set to CL8MSWIN1251 for export so that no conversion takes place. Confirm the import is successful and remove CL8MSWIN1251 data from database. Oracle support can now help you override the character set via ALTER database to say MSWIN1252. Now selectively export/import this data, again make sure NLS_LANG is set to MSWIN1252 for export so that no conversion takes place. Confirm the import is successful and remove MSWIN1252 data from database. And then do the same steps for 1250 data.

    Hello joy,
So, still looking for solution. I suggest you a sloution and it works well only if as you mentioned (in your previous post) that file causing error is temp file. So, get rid of this better you create new temporary table space and drop old one and then delete the old files manually.
But this will work only for Temp Tablespace not for normal tablespaces and datafiles. Prepare new temporary tablespace at different location from the previous one, try to make it on different disk beacuse it may be due to corruption of physical medium too.
Try this. If it works... you are through... otherwise i have no other options...

  • Detect of Oracle Server is available

I need a very primitive way to detect the existence of an Oracle Server, preferably by
opening a port via a TCPClient call with ASP.NET.
With SQL Server you can telnet to port 1433.
I've used ASP.NET and just connected to to the port to see if the server responds.
    This is all I need.
I need a similar solution for an Oracle 10 Database Server.
I really don't know Oracle at all.
PLEASE UNDERSTAND THE FOLLOWING before responding
    1) I just need to basically do a crude ping to see if an Oracle Server is at a given IP address/host.
    2) I am not looking for the best/correct/proper/canonical solution.

  • Oracle Database Authentication against Microsoft Active Directory

    Hello
Does anyone know if it is possible or can point me in the right direction of some documentation that discuss Oracle database user authentication against and Enterprise Directory Service, in my cases MS AD?
My environment consists of Oracle RDBMS 10.2.0.3 on Linux Red Hat AS 4. Our users connect in from Window clients. I would like to know if there is a way to autheticate users from Windows to the database using LDAP based (AD) authentication. In oters words how do I configure authentication to be done for "identified globally accounts"? I know that the identified by globally accounts require the use of the CN which I have done, but it seems like there is some piece missing. Perhaps an Oracle schema or modification to Active Directory??
    So my questions are
    1. Is it possible to authenticate users against AD without the implementation of OID?
    2. Is there documentation someone has or can point me to that outlines the required steps?
    3. Anything I should know?
I appreciate any help. The documentation I have found so far doesn't seem to be what I need... So I am looking for some advice.
    Thanks.

Sure, two methods to auth from Oracle DB to MSAD:
    OID and OVD
I am working on our own proof of concept configuring EUS connect to OVD with an MSAD as auth at the moment. OVD basically is presenting the database with OracleSchema and OracleContext info. And when you connect via netca (ldap.ora), you assign it as OID directory authentication type.
Here's an OVD manual on Integrating with EUS (chapter 7 is for MSAD)http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/id_mgmt/ovds/pdf/e10286.pdf
And this would be what the EUS config should look like:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/security/database-security/howtos/eus-how-to.html
If you've done everything in the first doc...
    Hope this answers your questions.

  • Running multiple oracle versions on the same server...

Hi, I have a server that is currently running oracle rdbms 10.2.0.3 on linux Itanium platform and the database that is currently on that server uses oracle ASM for it's files.
We have a need to also run a oracle rdbms 10.1.0.3 on the same sever and I would like to know if this is possible and will the 10.1.0.3 database be able to use the already installed and running ASM instance that has been created during the 10.2.0.3 install?
    Thx.

Because it is not just a new database we are trying to migrate an exisiting database to this new server and there is too much data which is time sesitive and the original machine is not very powerful and the only way I can foresee us being able to migrate in a time that would meet our requirements in to use dataguard to setup a physical syandby on the new server and then perfrom a failover to get the database live on the new hardware.
Thats why we are kinda stuck with the 10.1.0.3 database at this point in time until we can get it moved onto a server and staorage platform that will also allow us to upgrade in a timely fashion as welll. So your next question is why don't we just upgrade the existing database where it is know well the reason I am reluctant to upgrade on the existing server is because we only have access to tape backups on this system and I do not have alot of faith on the tape restore as it take a long time to complete and can be error prone.

  • How to 'move' databases from one server to another

    Hi there
Here is a brief description of my assignment.
We have two Redhat Linux 4 64-bit server where two Oracle 10.2.0.4 64-bit database are running (one on each server).
<li>DB on server1 is using Filesystem for storage.
<li>DB on 2nd server is using ASM.
<li>Size of both is between 75-80GB.
<li>I have to move both the databases to new servers (same platform) with minimum downtime.
<li>There is no upgrade required during this move/migration. Both DBs have to be brought over as-is.
<li>The new servers may be on VMWare - I am not sure it at the moment. But please let me know if that will make any difference.
I would highly appreciate if someone could please provide me with some high-level guidelines to perform this move.
    Best regards

    Hi Srini
Thank you so much for sharing the valuable URLs.
I am reading through "Cloning An Existing Oracle10g Release 2 (10.2.0.x) RDBMS Installation Using OUI [ID 559304.1]" and I have few questions.
    <li> This MOS says:
NOTE: This note should only be used for cloning single-instance (non-RAC) homes. It should not be used for cloning RAC, CRS or ASM homes. If that is the case, how should I clone ASM-Home?
One of the environments that I have to migrate to a new server has ASM installed as well. And couple of oracle databases (10.2.0.5) on that server are using ASM for storage.
<li>If were to do a fresh installation of 10gR2 RDBMS and ASM homes (on Redhat Linux 64-bit), I guess I need to contact Oracle Support (open an SR) to access the software, right?
<li>How to check from existing installation which patches I need to download and apply to this fresh installation in order to make it same as the existing installation? "opatch lsinventory" gives me a long list of number/fixes - I don't know which patch(es) to download.
    Please advise!

  • Gap sequence in alert log, but not according to v$archive_gap

I'm pretty certain i'm missing something straight-forward here, but just not seeing it at the moment, so any assistance would be useful.
I'm using RDBMS 11.1.0.7 on Linux RHEL 4.
    I have a Physical standby.
The alert log is showing a gap in the sequence of approx 100 files. However, if I query v$archive_gap I get 'no rows returned'.
Logs are continuing to be shipped from the primary without any issues, but are obviously not being applied waiting for the 'gap' to be restored.
I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion I will have to re-build the standby, but any pointers that may help prevent this would be useful.
I have re-built the broker configuration.
