RDP client for Xfce (without heavy Gnome/KDE dependancies)

I'm looking for a easy to use RDP client for Xfce, and am avoiding Gnome/KDE dependancies. I am avoiding them so I can get a nice fast system. So does anyone know one?

I underwent the same exact scenario. Installed MS Office (Home and Student), and also installed the RDC client. Worked for several months, and then gave me the "license expired" problem. Since it went a few months longer than the previous installation, which was not part of Office, I erroneously thought that the licensing problem was gone. Not so. Six months after install, it is dead. I think the Office version just gives you six months or so of usage, instead of three.
It's awfully "nice" of Microsoft to pull this, without giving the user any means for resolution. It says you have to buy a license, but from who?, where? How much?

  • RDP client for MacBook

    Hello!

    Hi-
Have you looked at "Chicken of the VNC"?
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/
(apparently playfully named after a brand of tinned tuna, here in the States, "Chicken of the Sea"...go figure
Whatever -- it is not precisely RDP, since you are going to be controlling the desktop, and not making a virtual desktop connection. But if you only need one person to connect to the Win Machine, this might do it.

  • Official RDP client for all major platforms and certificate issue only on windows

We have been fully embracing RDS and remote apps(working great internally). On the four major platforms OSX iOS Android and Windows we are using the official Microsoft application to connect to "Remote Resources" through VPN. Every platform besides
windows just popped up a certificate error you could accept. The windows client from the windows store was a miserable experience by going to the webpage and installing the certificate into the Trusted Root Certification Authorities. Something no end user
    will be able to achieve.
Why is the windows experience worse then the other 3 platforms. I am by no means certificate expert. Is this where we purchase an offical certificate and not have this issue? Still doesn't explain the lack of user friendliness on windows compared to the
    other OS'es

    Hi,
I understand what you mean.  One thing to keep in mind is that making it as easy as it is on the non-windows clients for end users to simply choose to trust the certificate and proceed is a security risk.  If the end users would contact their admin
via phone and verify that the thumbprint shown matches the cert thumbprint on the server then it would be okay, but people generally will not do that.

    Hi,
I'm using English keyboard layout so I'm not quite familar with others  - do you mean that in another layout the right Alt key will change to [ALT GR] (I searched and it is for typing special font)?
First will this work on a Windows system by default? If it will only work in MacOS, then it is not an issue but just not supported in Windows.
I tried to instore DE (Germany) and only rightALT+Q could get @ but nothing with asdfg.
With RDC in a MacBook, Alt+Q = œ, but still no asdfg.

  • Mac Menubar applet for Xfce/GNOME panels!

    AUR: for Xfce 4.4 | GNOME  2.16
    It's in my repository ("xfce4-macmenu-plugin" and gnome-macmenu-applet):
    [AqD]
    Server = http://people.os-zen.net/aqd/repository
You also need gtk2-aqd >= 2.10.6-2 from my repo and xfce 4.4 from shadowhand's or gnome 2.16
To move or remove the applet, move mouse pointer to the rightmost place of the menubar, where you will see something appearing like a flat button, then: (for Xfce) right-click on it, or (for GNOME) left-click on it, don't release button until you select the menu item.
You can right-click to get the panel menu (for restart/quit) if there is no window focused.
Problems and solutions: · GNOME/GTK2 apps' menubars cannot be restored to the original state once you use this applet. However, they wouldn't die even if the applet/panel crashes - restarting panel will catch them back.
    · After you restart the panel, the menubar of currently active window may not be visible, unfocus/focus (or shade/unshade) the main window will make it appear again
    · Restarting WM may cause some menubars to disappear - restarting panel will solve this
    Cheers!

I have the clients with Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003, Windows 7 and HP Neoware thin client CA21 with SO 5.0. On my client 2008, Windows 7 able to connect RDP but on the clients Windows Server 2003, and HP Neoware thin client CA21, when connect
to RDP to Terminal Server 2008 r2 receive the error. "Because of a security error, the client could not connect to the remote computer. Verify that you are logged on to the network, and then try connecting again".
My question is, How to Fix this error? and able to connect RDP from my clients 2003 and HP thin client to Terminal Server.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Which version of RDP client you are using for your client systems?
Please update to the latest available RDP client for machine.
On RDS Server 2008 R2, please check following setting and verify. (Part 1 from below article)
    1. Start the System tool. To start the System tool, click Start > Control Panel > System Icon and then click OK.
    2. Under Control Panel Home, click Remote settings.
    3. Click the Remote tab. Under Remote Desktop, Select either option depending on your security requirements:
Select the option “Allow connections from computers from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)”
    4. Click OK and verify.
Apart the issue may occur if a certificate on the terminal server is corrupted. Please try to
delete the registry key for “X509 certificate” to verify. (Part 4 from below article)

  • What's the difference between gnome, kde and xfce?

What's the difference between gnome, kde and xfce? Today I heard someone said gnome and kde have more software than xfce. Is that real?
    Thank you.
Last edited by thesimpsons (2009-04-02 01:50:28)

Its really a matter of taste, really. KDE is know to be configurable like hell, GNOME very easy to use, and XFCE lightweitgh.
Keep in mind that whatever desktop environment (DE) you choose, you can use any application in any DE. For example, firefox, a "GTK" application, works without problem under KDE. Or Kile, a latex front-end for KDE, works perfect under Gnome.
Personnally I prefer KDE. But I mostly prefer KDE applications like the editors (Kate/Kwrite) and file manager (dolphin).
KDE is slower to start on my EeePC (really small machine) but because it is full featured, I can cut on number of packages installed, so in the end, with the same functionality, I have more room on my disk then using XFCE!
Just try them, and choose the one you like

  • Install gnome/kde/xfce to /usr?

Why don't we just put everything into /usr? The /opt serves no purpose since all apps are installed/removed by pacman and not untar/rm. And where should you install an app that needs both of kde and gnome?? /opt/kde+gnome?
The reasons people are against this are summarized below:
    · The standard says "Large software packages must not use a direct subdirectory under the /usr hierarchy": BUT kde and gnome are not large packages (like openoffice), but many small packages, just like the rest of linux. The "GNOME" or "KDE" is just a conceptual name for end-users. Any app or user could use 1% of gnome/kde packages and keep away from the other 99%.
    · Puting all files into /usr is slow: There isn't any benchmark to confirm that. And a nearly-complete gnome 2.14 installation contains only about 100-200 files in /opt/gnome/bin/, compared to more than 1000 in /usr/bin. It just can't cause any slow down on modern linux filesystems. (it's 1,100+ not 11,000+)

once upon a time, it was simpler and certainly cleaner to put things in opt as we do, and we didnt have a standard telling us what to do. Time have changed since, and it's quite a monumental and time consuming task to move all of gnome, all of kde, and all of the various programs back to /usr, something that just doesnt seem like it will reap any benefit for all the effort.  That's the sole reason why things are in opt. Simple.
Sure, there's the standard -- but because there's a standard, doesnt mean we must follow it. Plenty of people get caught up in the word 'standard' and instagib-flame-kinghit-ko-up-left-right-right-down anyone who speaks against a standard irrelevant of the quality or applicability of the standard.
It's not like most distros actually observe the standard anyway. I havn't seen a single distro having httpd serve out of /srv. The standard itself is out of date and contradictory. Xorg moved from X11R6 to /usr a while back now. Besides, why seperate  X into X11R6? what makes it so special that it must be seperated yet kde and gnome cannot?
And is having kde and gnome seperate actually a violation of the standard?
It's no difficult stretch of the mind to consider them "Add-on application software packages" after all, they're not required for a system to run, and nor are they installed by default, they are addons after installation.
If we now look at the /usr section of the FHS, we see that:
/usr is the second major section of the filesystem. /usr is shareable, read-only data ..... Large software packages must not use a direct subdirectory under the /usr hierarchy.
It isnt difficult to consider KDE and GNOME large software packages. Saying they aren't large because they're split, is like calling OOo small if we split it up into each of it's components, libraries and programs. If you do decide to use any particular KDE and GNOME app, there exists something known as dependencies. For kde, you'll get a minimum of 30mb from kdebase, and that's just the tarball, not the extracted size.
The desktops themselves are quite large anyway. pacman -S gnome. I havn't got a clean install on me here, but it's surely a reasonable size to install to get a functioning GNOME desktop, KDE is definitely quite big, with kdebase alone being 30mb.
If you look at the actual standard, it's pretty flexible, and it's definition of /opt's purpose is very lofty. The rationale for it, is that "The use of /opt for add-on software is a well-established practice in the UNIX community"
    http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3 … REPACKAGES
And we can take their approach here too, not only is it fine to put kde and gnome in opt as they are addon packages, but we can use their own rationale and say "that's how we've always done it"
By no means do I remotely agree with the standard, but if you can use it to argue for putting them in /usr, you can also use it to argue for putting them in /opt. Either way, it negates this standard because of the ambiguity in this area and doesnt change the sole reason why things are in /opt in arch, which I explained first.

  • RDS 2012 Disable HTTP transport - Enable only RPC over HTTP for both pre 8 and 8 RDP clients

  • Execute client for Session Bean without appClient

    Hi,
I want to execute a standalone client for a Session Bean in a Application Server 8 platform but I dont want to use the "appClient" script that is used in the J2EE 1.4 Tutorial.
For example, for the Converter example I want to execute ConverterClient directly.
For this I suppose that I have to include the following lines of code:
    java.util.Hashtable env = new java.util.Hashtable();
              env.put( Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "XXXX" );
              env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "YYYY");
    Context initial = new InitialContext(env);
    Context myEnv = (Context) initial.lookup("java:comp/env");
BUT WHAT XXXX AND YYYY SHOULD BE IN SUN APPLICATION SERVER 8?
    Thanks

When you are inside a container these are setup as properties automaticly. When you are outside the container you can setup these properties just the container does, but it is not done for you. When you use that HashTable you are giving it the properties instead of it getting them from system properties. Also, it looks like you need to change the lookup. Once you get the InitailContext you will see that you can't lookup java:comp from outside. You will have to use the fully qualified name. Something like "nodes/node1/servers/server1/ejb/myEjb". Just keep that in mind.

  • RDP prompting for password

I am trying to setup an rdp connection that will connect to a windows
2003 domain server without being prompted for credentials. The server however is constantly prompting me for a password.
So far have checked the following
     1) Group Policy in "Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal
Services\Encryption and Security\Always prompt client for password upon connection" is not configured.
     2) The registry key "fPromptForPassword" in both DefaultUserConfiguration
and WinStations is set to 0.
     3) Credentials are stored in the local credentials cache
I presume the problem is that on the RDP-TCP properties of
the server I am trying to connect to, "Always prompt for password" is ticked
and is also greyed out so I am unable to change it.
Can anyone tell me how this box is ticked and greyed out given the
above settings and if this will be the cause of my issue.
    Thanks

    Hi,
It sounds like the setting is configured via group policy.  Please log on to the server as a domain admin and use gpresult to check the group policy settings that are being applied using the following commands:
    gpresult /z>gpresult.txt
    notepad gpresult.txt
    Thanks.

  • RDP Client Issue

    Hi all
We have a strange issue with the Microsoft RDP Client - Every day at some point a user will contact us with this and its driving me insane.
What happens is - the User will click the RDP link on the desktop Enter their password and hit enter - what happens then is the program minimizes to the taskbar ,cannot be maximized and I have to kill the mstc process in Task manager and either log off ,
restart and or delete the registry key MSLICENSING
Its not happening with everyone but it happens on a daily basis  - Terminal Server is 2008 R2 and all clients are Window 7
The users have a shortcut on their desktop to resourses in another office using the format \\192.168.100.100\Server\Share\
I cant help feeling this issue is attached to this as , when one works the other doesnt and vice-versa  only a restart will get both working . If the remote desktop session is open , users clicking the Resouirses link get the circular "Working"
Icon and the link never opens
There are no relating events either on the local client or the Terminal Server and it has me stumped
really appreciate some help or guidance of what to try
    Thanks

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Have you apply any permission to the users?
Which version of client RDP you are using?
Initially suggest you to install RDP v 8.1 on your client system. Then create new user without any permission provided (Just get permission for remote control-Add under Remote Desktop User local group). After this check whether he is facing any issue.
As it seems to be like authentication issue from server side. Please consider following below points.
    Configuring authentication and encryption
Use the following procedure to configure authentication and encryption for a connection.
    1. On the RD Session Host server, open Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration. To open Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, point to Remote Desktop Services, and then click Remote Desktop Session Host
    Configuration.
    2. Under Connections, right-click the name of the connection, and then click Properties.
    3. In the Properties dialog box for the connection, on the General tab, in Security layer, select a security method.
    4. In Encryption level, click the level that you want. You can select Low, Client Compatible, High, or FIPS Compliant. See Step 4 above for Windows Server 2003 for Security layer and Encryption level options.

  • Problem with Mac OSX version of Microsoft RDP Client 8.0.10 (Build 25189) connecting to Linux host running XRDP

    Hi,
I have an issue when using the Microsoft RDP client on Mac OSX 10.X when connecting to a Linux host running the XRDP service(XRDP host is authenticating to an AD DC).
Exactly the same connection parameters work when connecting to the XRDP host from a Windows server using the local Microsoft RDP Client and the same authentication credentials, so I am confused as to what might be creating the issue.
I have also checked that I am able to connect from my Mac to the remote linux box that is running the XRDP service, by using another App on OSX called CoRD. This also connects without issue.
Are there any differences in the way the Mac version of Microsoft RDP authenticates compared to its Windows counterpart?
Any advise appreciated. Happy to provide any logs.

    Hi,
As this case has been quiet for a while.I need to close the case and will mark it as Answer. If you still have any issue,I suggest you ask in a new thread.
