RDS CAL License Conversion

Hello,
We have a customer who is running remote desktop services with ~500 "User based" client access licenses. As part of capacity planning, the customer have procured an additional ~500 "Device based" client access licenses. The environment
is requrired to have all User Based CAL ONLY. Is there a provision to get the new Device based CAL converted into User based CAL? If yes, please let me know the procedure.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
NOTE: We do not have an active SA agreement with Microsoft.
Thanks,
Koushik

The only way to do this would be through your licence reseller or through Microsoft clearing house. But AFAIK they don't allow this to happen.

    Hi,
RDS 2012 CALs can license 2008 R2 and 2008 session hosts. However, RDS 2012 CALs only can be installed on the 2012 Licensing server.

  • RDS Cal Licenses not recognized

Available and Issued should add up to 10, but is instead showing 0 available, 0 issued, and using “Built-in-overused” instead of the legitimate CAL.
This causes an error in the licensing diagnose:
Screenshot will not post until "verify your account" but no instructions about how to accomplish this.

Dharmesh, this is a single machine for a Proof Of Concept application, therefore the licensing server and RD session host are on the same machine.  Though it is part of the domain, the Group Policy for RD Licensing is in
the default “not defined” state.  This should not be an issue, as quoted from your link (emphasis added):
“If you disable or do not configure the License server security group policy setting, the Terminal Server Computers group is not deleted or changed and
the license server issues an RDS CAL (if an appropriate RDS CAL is available)
to any RD Session Host server that requests one.”
With no changes to GPO defaults, the licensing server should issue CALs to itself without issue.  In fact, CAL’s are being issued, they’re just being issued from the built-in overuse account instead of from the purchased
    license.
TP, this is 2012 R2.   licmgr.exe displays the following:
License Version and Type / License Program / Total Licenses / Available / Issued / Expiry Date / Keypack ID
    Windows 200 Server – Built-in TS Per Device CAL / Built-in / Unlimited / Unlimited / 0 / Never / 2
    Windows Server 2012 – Installed RDS Per User Cal / Built-in OverUsed / 0 / 0 / 8 / Never / 4
    Windows Server 2012 – Installed RDS Per User Cal / Retail Purchase / 10 / 0 / 0 / Never / 3
This agrees with the raw numbers (10/8) listed in the results of the CAL usage report below, the report isn’t too helpful as it doesn’t note which CAL is being used (as above), which is the problem:

  • Using Windows Server 2012 per-User RDS CAL on Server 2008 R2 Session Host

I have a Remote Desktop Licensing Server setup on my domain controller running Windows Server 2012 R2. I have installed a
’Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services per-User CAL’ there and activated the licensing server already.
Currently I use ONLY Windows Server 2008 R2 machines as RDS Session Hosts (in the future I plan to transition them to 2012 R2, hence the CAL I bought is
    already in the newest version).
I have already configured my WS 2008 RDS Session Hosts: set
Per-User licensing mode and specified license server address. The connectivity between my Session Host(s) and my License Server seems to be ok as the
Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration window on the Session Host correctly lists the 2012 per-user
license (CAL installed on server) from the license server.
On the License Server I can also see event logs entries (in
Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-Licensing/Admin), indicating that the user has been issued a license.
The issue I am having is that the license being issued is
2008 Per User CAL license (Build-in OverUsed - temporary) and not the 2012 Per User CAL license which is the only license installed on the server. According to the RDS CAL interoperability matrix at
social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/14988.rds-and-ts-cal-interoperability-matrix.aspx, I was expecting the 2012 license to be backward-compatible with 2008 client (and that
in the absence of legacy licenses, the (only) 2012 license would be used for all clients connecting to the licensing server)
Before I bought my license, I found this document:
    download.microsoft.com/download/3/D/4/3D42BDC2-6725-4B29-B75A-A5B04179958B/WindowsServerRDS_VLBrief.pdf
which says that - "newer version RDS CALs can be used with an older version of the server software" (In section FAQ, Q4), which means to me that
the 2012 license would work as-is for the 2008 Server and gives me flexibility when upgrading to the new server version.
How can I make this CAL work in my environment?
    Note:
    I have already explicitly disabled
Prevent license upgrade Group Policy setting which I assumed would fix the issue but nothing has changed.
Then I have enabled License server security group Group Polity setting
and added computers from my domain to RDS Endpoint Servers AD group. I have also created new AD group called
Terminal Server Computers and added the computer accounts there, but it changes
    nothing. Reference - technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee791761.aspx , technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725704.aspx and blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2009/09/17/control-the-issuance-of-rds-cals.aspx.
I found one potential ‘workaround’ which involved manually downgrading my CAL license by calling
Microsoft Clearinghouse. I am very reluctant do to so because, as I upgrade parts of my infrastructure to Server 2012, I’d need to then ask Microsoft to manually upgrade a part of my license back as well.
Am I missing something? What should I do to get my 2012 CAL to be issued to 2008 R2 server

Hi, I have tried several other possibilities.
I change expire date for my temporary assigned license (2008 CAL overused). It can be done, by changing Active Directory user properties – msTSExpireDate. When I restart my Session Host server and logged again, my license was renewed
for next 60 days (event ID - 4145).
I also delete information about license for this user (clear msTSExpireDate and msTSLicenseVersion). And the license was successfully removed from License Manager. After another SH restart it gets the same – 2008 overused – license
(event ID 4143 - license server has successfully issued …)
I now, that changing info in AD attributes is a little trick, and this is not a real value - only a reference, but it was useful to delete or change expiration date of license. But it didn’t change type of license as I expected.

I have found your post with information:
If you have a Server 2012 RD Licensing server you may install your 2012 RDS CALs on it (no downgrade necessary) and then set your Server 2008 R2 RDSH to
use the 2012 RDL server.  The 2012 RD Licensing server will automatically issue the CALs as 2008. -

  • Windows Server 2012 RDS CALS on Windows Server 2008 R2 Licensing Server

    Hi,
at the moment we are installing the first couple of Windows Server 2012 in our infrastructure.
Some of them have installed RDS.
Now we are wondering whether it is possible to use our existing Windows Server 2008 R2 licensing server for serving the licenses we have (yes we to have new Windows Server 2012 RDS CALS) or whether we have to install a new host based on Windows Server 2012.
We tried to add the new license to the 2008 R2 licensing server, but it is not possible. The licensing manager's error message: "The license code contains invalid characters or not enough characters."
    Is there any other way?
    Thanks and regards
    Matthias

    Hi matt_will_fix_it,
    How about Windows 2012 R2 ?
Will a Windows 2012 RD Licensing server provide licences to a Windows 2012 R2 server?
I have not tested it, but it should work.  Server 2012 R2 requires the same RDS CAL version as Server 2012.  If you try it and have an issue please reply back.

  • 2008 RDS user cal License moving to 2012 server

    Hello ,
We have moved the 2008 RDS User Cal Volume License to the 2012 server .
In the RDS license Manager it is showing usage is showing as Zero even though users are using the service.
It is issuing the temporary license.
Does anyone have document how to follow the migrations process from 2008 RDS User Cal Volume License to the 2012 server.
    please provide the resolutions.

    Hi,
Please describe in more detail you current server configuration and what steps you have performed so far.
    1. Are the users logging on to a Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH) server, or Server 2012/2012 R2 RDSH server?  If the RDSH server is 2012/2012 R2 then 2012 RDS CALs are required.  Additionally you need to configure the
licensing mode of the 2012 RDSH server to be Per User.  From your description it sounds like it is set to Per Device.  The licensing mode is set in the RDS deployment properties: Server Manager -- RDS -- Overview -- Deployment Overview -- Tasks --
Edit Deployment Properties -- RD Licensing tab.
    2. If the users are logging on to a Server 2008 R2 RDSH server, did you set its licensing mode to Per User and point it to the new 2012 RD Licensing server?  You can do this by logging on to the RDSH as an admin and opening RD Session Host Configuration
(tsconfig.msc) or by setting the appropriate group policy.
    Thanks.

  • How can I know if my CAL license is valid for server 2012

    Hi everyone,
I have a domain where all the server are  Windows Server 2008R2, Due to certain progams that are about to enter the organization I have to deploy several new servers that will run server 2012R2 and possibly upgrade a few existing ones to 2012R2 as well.
That is however not the problem.
I recently found out the remote desktop servers that run the RD licensing role, Don't serve windows server 2012, but if I deploy a new RDS with server 2012 R2 it can serve both my old 2008 R2 servers and my new 2012 R2 servers. First I'd like to know if
it's correct and if any of you have tried that in the past. Furtner, I need to know if the CAL license that's installed on my 2008 R2 server is valid for 2012R2 servers as well, is there a way to find that out?
    Hoping for a quick response.

    Hi David,
You are correct, a 2012 R2 server can license your 2008 R2 servers, but your 2008 R2 CALs will not work to license connections to 2012 R2. A good wiki here...

  • Windows 2012 RDS CALs - OLP NL downgrade to Windows 2003 TS CALs

    Hi,
Hope someone can shed some light on this inquiry
I plans to purchase the following:
2x Windows 2014 SQL STD 2 Core License OLP NL
30 Windows 2012 RDS CALs (User or Device) OLP NL
               Breakdown example
                Site A = 10
                Site B = 5
                Site C = 15
Existing servers are Windows 2003 R2 STD running Terminal Services
Tried setting up a Windows 2003 R2 TS Server and install TS Roles & Licensing Manager
    Questions.
     1. When I tried to add Windows 2003 TS CALs - OLP NL, the activation screen requires to enter the Authorization & License numbers.
Can I use the Authorization and License number of the newly purchased Windows 2012 RDS CALs on the Windows 2003 TS Server?
     2. Should I get a separate Authorization & License number per site? (In the example above 3x Authorization & License numbers). Or can we use a single Authorization & License number for all sites? Each site is independent from each
    other.
     3. As I understand, SQL 2014 can be downgraded to any prior previous version at the same editions. (as far as SQL 2000, provided he has the installer), If client has an existing SQL 2003 STD activated already, does he need to change the license key?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server forum.
Yes, you can use newly purchased server 2012 RDS CAL on server 2003 terminal server.
RDS and TS CAL Interoperability Matrix
For detail regarding the licensee issue I suggest you to contact MS Volume Licensing.
As per my research, I think you don’t have to change the old license key if client already have the key. And in regards to SQL server you can have a look over beneath article.

  • Server 2008 R2 RDS HA Licensing configuration best practices

    Hello
What is the best practice for setting up and HA licensing environment for RDS?  I'm using a mixture of RDS CALs for my internal/AD users and External Connector license for my external/Internet users.
    Daddio

    Hi,
To ensure high availability you want to have a fallback License Server in your environment. The recommended method to configure Terminal Service
Licensing servers for high availability is to install at least two Terminal Services Licensing servers in Enterprise Mode with available Terminal Services CALs. Each server will then advertise in Active Directory as enterprise license servers with regard to
the following Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) path: //CN=TS-Enterprise-License-Server,CN=site name,CN=sites,CN=configuration-container.
To get more details on how to setup your License Server environment for redundancy and fallback, go over the "Configuring License Servers for High Availability"
section in the Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server Licensing whitepaper

  • Do RDS CALs Have a Tombstone Life?

Is a 2008 R2 RDS CAL an actual AD object? This question is penultimate to: do the tombstone policies of AD objects apply to RDS CALs?

    Hi,
Permanent RDS Per Device CALs expire between 52 to 89 (exact number is random) days after issuance, temporary RDS Per Device CALs expire in 90 days, and Per User RDS CALs expire after 60 days.
You may open RD Licensing Manager (licmgr.exe) to see what Per Device RDS CALs have been issued, when they expire, etc.  For Per User RDS CALs you must first create a Per User usage report, then right-click on this report, save it as csv file,
and then view the csv in Notepad, Excel, etc.

    Hi Venkatesh,
As Diramoh suggested, we do not need to install CAL in Windows Servers unless it is RDS CALs. You can put the document into your administration papers.
However, if you need further assistance about license, it is recommended to visit the Volume Licensing Microsoft Licensing Center.
