RDS license server failover

Hi
I have a question regarding adding a second RDS license server in my environment. I am using per device mode and want to keep all licenses on my current RDS license server instead of splitting them up. If I add a second server and I loose my primary server
what happens to clients already holding a license and trying to authenticate? Will they be issued a temporary license from the secondary RDS license server or will they be declined since the secondary server is unable to validate the issued license?
Thanks

  • Windows 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Service Role pickup 2012 RDS License Server.

I am installing Citrix onto a Windows 2008 R2 server as part of this I need to setup the RDS Role on the same box and then point it to the Windows RDS License server.
Our plan is to have a Windows 2012 License server for RDS Licenses i.e. install 2012 RDS Licenses.
I was wondering if it was possible for a 2008 R2 RDS role to pick up 2012 RDS Licneses from a Windows 2012 RDS Server?
    Many thanks,

  • Cannot license RDS licensing server

On trying to activate a remote desktop licensing server at https://activate.microsoft.com I receive the following message in a modal dialogue box.
Remote desktop services is unable to process your request.  The License Server ID provided is not valid for the Microsoft Clearing House.  Please re-check your entry and try again.
The License server ID is cut and pasted from the RD licensing manager so there is no typographical error.  Any ideas how to get around this?

    Hi,
From the error message, it seems that the ID you input is not recognized - as it is copied from licensing manager, the issue could be caused on the activation side.
In such situation is it recommended to directly call the support for this issue. We may not able to provide much help on forum. Thank you for your understanding.

  • Server 2012 - Problem with multiple instances of RDS looking to the same license server. Server Pools requiring the wrong servers.

    Hi All,
I have two domains, prod.local and test.local.  On prod.local, I have a license server living on the connection broker.  I have created a two way trust between the domains so that the RDS instance on test.local can use the license server on prod.local.
When I first setup the RDS instance on test.local and point it to use the license server on prod.local everything appears to work, all servers recognize the license server.
However when I log off and back on, and click the RDS dashboard in test.local, the Remote Desktop Services overview states I need to add every server from prod.local to the server pool.  This is bothersome because the Remote Desktop Services on test.local
is still functioning, but I am no longer able to manage it.  When I add the servers from prod.local to the server pool I am displayed the setup for prod.local instead of test.local
Is there a way around this?  Can I use the same RDS license server key multiple times?
tldr: Using a different domain's license server causes my RDS instance in Server Manager to display the wrong RDS farm.

    Hi Nathan,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server forum.
Please check the required ports must be opened on firewall.
    - To issue RDS Per User CALs to users in other domains, there must be a two-way trust between the domains, and the license server must be a member of the Terminal Server License Servers group in those domains.
    - To restrict the issuance of RDS CALs, you can add RDS Host Servers into Terminal Server Computers group on RDS Licensing servers.
    - Configure RDS licensing server on all RDS Host Servers in each domain/forest. You can do it through RDS host configuration snap-in or through a group policy.
    - Add administrators group of each domain/forest in the local administrators of RDS licensing server. This way, you’ll not get a prompt to enter your credentials when you’ll open RDS host configuration snap-ins in trusted domains/forests.

  • Grace period after activating licensing server

We currently have a windows 2008 server R2 installed in one of our servers. We are basically using that server for connecting via RDP and its currently in 120 day grace period ( terminal server licensing). This is getting expired in another two days. We
currently have only 40 user cal license with us. It seems we require RDS cals to connect via RDP. Currently the licensing server is currently not activated.
My query is will there be any additional grace period once I activate the licensing server, during which I will procure the RDS cals. Or any other way to extend it.
    Its little urgent kindly helpp.!.

    Hi,
Based on my knowledge the user logging on the RDSH (Remote Desktop Session Host servers(s)) that query/get the CALs from the RDS Licensing server) will have issues or stop logging in.

  • Windows 2012 R2 RDS Licensing Issue

I setup RDS License Server role in our domain controller server and installed open license RDS User CAL. From the connection broker server, I setup RDS Deployment's RD Licensing to per user and added the domain controller from the license server
list. RD Licensing Diagnoser output is ok and able to detect the license server. All servers are windows 2012 R2.
Now the issue is, when using RD Web access and launching the application, the license manager is still showing 0 issued license. Tried opening several sessions, more than the number of license seats available and still RDS still works fine. Wondering
whether license server is functioning properly. Let me know if someone experienced the same thing.
    Thanks!
    Joe

    Hi Joe,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Have you find any specific error\event id for this case?
As you have Per User CAL  and to see your Per User RDS CAL usage you need to create a report, save it to a .csv file, and then view the csv file in Notepad/Excel. We can do this in RD Licensing Manager by right-clicking on the server name, choosing Create
Report - Per User CAL Usage, and then after you have the report right-click on it and choose to save it as csv.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Permanently Lost RD License Server - Regain Access to CALs

A RDS License server running Windows Server 2012 used to have two license packs installed (50 user CALs and 50 device CALs). The server was running in a Hyper-V virtual machine and is currently no longer available due to a human error, i.e. the VHD has been
lost. We installed a new RDS License server and activated it. Now I want to install the two license packs on the new server but as they have already been used, this is not possible.
I called the Microsoft Clearinghouse and opened a support request. They requested the License Server ID of the old server. I explained that I do not have access to this ID. Microsoft states that without the ID they cannot deactivate the old server and
release the license packs. Is this true? Is it possible to find this ID somewhere in Active Directory? Or is it only accessible through the Properties menu in Remote Desktop Licensing Manager? Overall, can I regain access to these CALs without the old server's
ID or they have been lost forever?

    Hi,
If the server is destroyed I do not know of any way to retrieve the old license server id.  As long as you have the authorization numbers, license numbers, agreement numbers, paperwork, emails, etc. for the original licenses there is no problem.
You provide the information about the original licenses and explain to the Clearinghouse that the old licensing server has catastrophically failed and they will re-issue the licenses.

  • RD Licensing server not issue license

    Hi
I'm building Windows Server 2012 R2 VDI infrastructure using RDVH that will host Personal Collection Type. I Installed RDS Licensing server and added Windows Server 2012 -RDS Per Device CAL. When user connects to his VM it does not consume RDS Per Device CAL.
    Any idea why?

    Thanks for your answers
I uploaded picture with the status of my licensing server:
    https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=F265A2FD38D6565E!122&authkey=!ADYEwwRWftTt_H4&v=3&ithint=photo%2c.jpg
I can't use RD LIcense Diagnoser because we don't use RDSH in this implementation, only RD Virtualization Host.
Other roles are implememented RD Web, RD Gateway, RD Connection Broker.
I also ran Get-RDLicenseConfiguration on RDCB and get valid output where my mode is PerDevice and fqdn addresses of my license servers

  • RDS Licenses

    Hi All,
Another RDS licensing question but with a twist.
    Background
I have a new client running Server 2008 R2 with RDS Cals. All this was setup by one of their ex employee's. It appears they have no documentation as to how anything was setup including licensing. As part of my fact finding for the documentation I'm writing
I asked for details about licensing and have been unable to find anything relating to licensing regardless of how I have checked.
I was only able to confirm licensing for the server because it was bought with an OEM server license and the COA is in tack on the server.
They are adamant licensing was purchased and from looking at the RDS licensing server it would appear to be the case but I don't have vast amounts of RDS experience.
So the question I am asking
Is it possible to recover the "MSDN Subscriber ID" from the server? I was hoping with this information I could work backwards to verify licensing?

Can you check with your purchasing department where and when licenses were bought? that should give you the information you need because the PO would include references to the delivered products. And even if they don't, you could still contact the company
you bought the licenses from to work things out.
Or perhaps you could take the RDS license server ID
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd759257.aspx
And contact a Microsoft licensing center. They can tell you exactly what has been activated on that server and provide you with the licensing details.
Afaik it is not possible to discover the MSDN subscriber ID, simply because there can be many places where the licensing could have come from, other than MSDN.

  • Windows 2012 R2 License Server and Firewall Ports

    Hi,
I have setup a Windows Server 2012 R2 as a RDS license server, and I have installed the necessary CALS.  This server is on the domain and in AD.  We have a separate VLAN that is isolated but can join domain for authentication purposes only,
but it is behind a firewall.  What ports do I need to open on the firewall in order for the Windows 2012 Servers to aquire a license from the 2012 R2 server in the domain?
    Thanks,

    Hi Mike,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
    Remote Desktop License Server
o RD License Server Port RPC
o TCP 443: Communication over the internet to the Microsoft Clearing House
o TCP 5985: WMI and PowerShell Remoting for administration

  • Server 2012 R2 RDS- Only want the Session Host, Connection Broker and Licensing Server!

    Hi all,
Wondering if anyone has experience with implementing Remote Desktop Services (RDS) on Windows Server 2012 R2.
I am doing an RDS design for a platform where we only need an RDS Session Host, Licensing Server and Connection Broker. We do not need web access as these servers will simply be jump boxes internally!
However, implementing this correctly in our test environment has proved to be tricky. The options are:
Use the Server Manager and do a traditional install via Roles and Features ( specifically add the Session Host, Licensing Server and Connection Broker). The installation process seems to go through ok in this scenario but when I head over to the Remote
Desktop Services section of the Server Manager I simply get the message 'An RDS Deployment does not exist in the server pool. To create a deployment head to Roles and Features'.
Use the specific ‘Remote Desktop Services installation’ option on the Server Manager and do a Session Based Desktop deployment and Quick Start. This installation process seems to go through correctly and the Remote Desktop Section seems to be working
correctly via the Server Manager. However this process is ‘hard locked’ i.e. it installs the session host, web access and connection broker. I can then remove the web access component later from Roles/ Features.
Is there a best practice (if any) for installation? i.e. Will there be any issues down the line if I remove RDS Web Access from my server while following method 2?
There is a complete lack of documentation from Microsoft here so not sure what to do! Just need a basic RDS session based deployment.

    Hi,
As I know from server 2012\R2 the best deployment skill is to perform via “Remote Desktop Services” installation mode with Standard deployment and don’t let single role to install. Because when we install through RDS mode, there are specific extra tools and
services activated along with that deployment which you can’t find with single role installation. And that is for sure, when we install RDS role as of this, by default we will get install RDCB, RDSH and RDWA role installed.
Sorry don’t have any option to try to remove that role as that role basically needed for RemoteApp and Desktop purpose. But if you want then you can try it with help of “Remove-RDServer”Powershell command.

  • Windows Server 2012 RDS CALS on Windows Server 2008 R2 Licensing Server

    Hi,
at the moment we are installing the first couple of Windows Server 2012 in our infrastructure.
Some of them have installed RDS.
Now we are wondering whether it is possible to use our existing Windows Server 2008 R2 licensing server for serving the licenses we have (yes we to have new Windows Server 2012 RDS CALS) or whether we have to install a new host based on Windows Server 2012.
We tried to add the new license to the 2008 R2 licensing server, but it is not possible. The licensing manager's error message: "The license code contains invalid characters or not enough characters."
    Is there any other way?
    Thanks and regards
    Matthias

    Hi matt_will_fix_it,
    How about Windows 2012 R2 ?
Will a Windows 2012 RD Licensing server provide licences to a Windows 2012 R2 server?
I have not tested it, but it should work.  Server 2012 R2 requires the same RDS CAL version as Server 2012.  If you try it and have an issue please reply back.

  • RDS 2012 R2 cannot add 3rd party (parent domain) licensing server

    Hi,
I have a RDS 2012 R2 farm and i cannot add a 3rd party licensing server that is in a parent domain (forest root domain - hosted by our corp HQ). I will edit deployment properties for the deployment in the first CB server to add a licensing server in per
user mode. Seemes to work, however no licenses are given to SH servers. Have made GPO aswell to explicitly specify licensing server and mode, however i think this should not be neccessary.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
    1. In Server Manager -- RDS -- Overview -- Tasks -- Edit Deployment Properties -- RD Licensing tab, please make sure that the Licensing mode is set to match the type of licenses you purchased, and that the FQDN of your RD Licensing server is listed.
    2. In Server Manager -- RDS -- Collections -- <your collection> -- Host Servers, please make sure that your RDSH server is listed.  If you have more than one server with the RDSH Role Service in your deployment make sure that all of them are
listed.  If they are not you may click Tasks -- Add RD Session Host Servers (make sure the servers are part of the Server Manager server pool prior to this).
    3. On Server 1, please open an Administrator PowerShell prompt and enter the following command:
    Add-WindowsFeature RDS-Licensing-UI
    4. After the above powershell command completes you should be able to open RD Licensing Manager (licmgr.exe) on Server 1 if you need to.  Please note that it is more important to have the licensing configured properly in deployment properties and your
RDSH servers part of a collection than it is to be able to open RD Licensing Manager on both of your servers.
