RDS VDI Issues

Hopefully someone has come across this before...
We have configured a 2012 R2 server with Hyper-V and RDS for a VDI deployment.  Our golden image is Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise (32-bit) and is giving us issue after issue when we try to create a collection.  Basically, we receive one of two errors:
1.  If we do not update the Integration Components, we receive an error when creating the collection stating that they are not up to date and the collection is created, but the VMs are not (so it's useless).
2.  If we do update the IC, then sysprep will not work properly (after sysprepping the image it restarts and goes right into Windows or shuts down and looks OK, but when attempting to create the image the wizard says that it has not been "sysprep
generalized").  We have tried performing the sysprep in and out of audit mode as well as stepping into it by doing a reboot into OOBE and then generalizing, etc.
To sysprep we are using the following command (and multiple iterations of the order of the switches):
sysprep /oobe /shutdown /generalize
Any assistance or tips would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
From your description appears that there is some configuration issue during creating an image and manage that image for VDI. There is step by step article which can get you through for your case. Please follow the article and recheck all the related steps

  • Using USB Devices in RDS VDI with Windows 8.1 Scenario

We are currently in a Upgrade Scenario from our old Windows XP/ Citrix XenDesktop Farm to a new VDI Installation. The new Installation is a Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services Collection using Remote Desktop Virtualizaion Hosts on 2012 R2 too.
The VD- Clients are Windows 8.1 ENT and the User Endpoints are HP ThinClients with Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Enterprise.
The user connects to his Virtual Desktop via 8.1 Embedded (RDP8.1)
We want all new USB- Drives to map natively in the RDP- Session (RemoteFX USB redirect) so USB- Sticks or CD/DVD Drives are controlled by the VD-Client OS.
We understand, that there are so called "high level devices" which RDP is using per Default. We also know, that there is a GPO that redirects all "other supportet USB devices". That works well for e.g. Webcams, but we want to override the
"high Level devices" policy an simply map a e.g. USB Stick natively to the RDP Destination.
Currently the drive is mapped as a "high Level usb device" and the usb key has no drive letter, cant be formattet or used in other RemoteApp Sessions initiated on the VD- Client OS.
    The Systems we are using:
Windows 8.1 Enterprise - VD Client on HyperV 2012 R2 FO Cluster
Windows 8.1 Embedded Industry Enterprise as ThinClient OS
Windows Server 2012 R2 as Middleware (RDS VDI Collection, Web Access)
    Thank you in Advance

    Hi Chris,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
The USB devices that you would like to use in the remote session must be plugged in before starting Remote Desktop Connection; devices plugged in during the session will not be redirected.
Have you tried to reconfigure the USB device?
Please try to remove that device and reconfigure with use of following command and check whether issue get resolved.
    Set-RDVirtualDesktopCollectionConfiguration –CollectionName YourCollectionName –CustomRdpProperty "usbdevicestoredirect:s:{6bdd1fc6-810f-11d0-bec7-08002be2092f }"

  • RDS VDI Certificate Mismatch

    Hi,
I have a 2012 R2 RDS farm deployed and users are able to log onto the personal desktops successfully.  However, when the user launches the VDI from RDWEB, they receive a certificate mismatch.  The certificate being presented is self signed from
    the VDI.
Is this normal behaviour for the VDI connection? Or am I missing something here?

    Hi,
When running App\VDI from RD web we have to use the trusted certificate for proper connection. If you are receiving certificate mismatch error then there are certain reason to occur. When publishing RDS externally, you will see a certificate mismatch as the
internal server FQDN’s/IP addresses will show externally during the connection process to RemoteApps or RemoteDesktops.
There are certain solution to resolve this issue.
    • Can create a new DNS zone, .COM to allow split-brain DNS (so that internal clients can resolve external names internally)
    • Create a relevant DNS entry to point to the RDS environment’s internal IP address
    • Create a relevant DNS entry in external DNS to point to the firewall which is publishing RDS’s external IP address
    • Use the following script to change the FQDN of the RDP files provided by RD Web Access / RemoteApp and Desktop connection feed

  • RDS Focus issue with Windows 8.1

This is quite infuriating. I never post on here, so for me to be doing so, trust me, is basically as a last resort. I work for a s/w company, and we have two options w the app- local installation, or cloud, utilizing RDS. Our work database is (obviously)
on the cloud, so I can firsthand feel our customers pain.
Once the RDS session is opened, whether its minimized or not, no matter what you are doing or where you're navigating, after so much time elapses, it steals focus, and i end up half the time inadvertantly overwriting customer info because the cursor shifts
    over, you get the idea.
I researched this for a LONG time. I cannot for the life of me find a fix. I changed the registry key for the foregroundlocktimeout to 30d40 hex, and still no love. Does anyone have ANY other suggestions? Its really making life difficult, but the conundrum
is I HAVE to have it open at all times. Thoughts?

I have exactly the same issue
It has been the same since i installed Win 8.1. just to summarise - very simple
When any Remote Desktop Services (RDS) is active it will assume focus every 60-90 seconds. ie
     reboot computer,
    launch browser,
go to RDS URL an login,
open ANY application (word, excel, Explorere, IE... any of 30 on the server) - so lets say Excel
launch a local app - ANY - say IE, or word or explorer
and within 1 minute while typing in Word - the RDS excel will be in focus and you will be typing into it...
I concur with the OTownMarine above - all the basic fixes have been done, removing  KB2919355
& KB2959977 - caused the same issue as described
THis is not any other service or application except RDS
     - TAKING focus
I do not want to do any more basic testing - but am happy
to do checks or try things that are SPECIFIC to this issue as it is extremely frustrating. However having said this - it would take some one less than 15 mins to test when they apply their mind

  • Windows 2008 R2 RDS Licensing Issue

I have Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 farm (with all of the application servers running Windows 2003) and I have just migrated from using a Windows 2003 server for the terminal services licensing to a Windows 2008 R2 RDS server for the licensing. We have
a number of thin-clients that connect to the Citrix farm and provide a kiosk for users. We have 85 per device licenses however we are only using 15 of those licenses (plans were made but never implemented to use the rest), so we have 70 available licenses.
The licenses are configured per device and as Windows Server 2003 licenses.
After the migration to 2008 R2, the thin-clients connected to the new licensing server without any trouble at all. As I monitored the licenses on the new server, each thin-client was given a temporary license first and then at the
next connection they got a permanent license. All of this I have been able to confirm through the event logs on the server.
However, what I get in the event logs of the new 2008 R2 licensing server an event with event ID 21 that says:
The Remote Desktop license server "ServerName" does not have any remaining permanent Remote Desktop Services client access licenses (RDS CALs) of the type "Windows Server 2003 - TS Per Device CAL". As a result, the Remote Desktop license server cannot issue
RDS CALs of the type "Windows Server 2003 - TS Per Device CAL" to the Remote Desktop Session Host server "vvv.xxx.yyy.zzz". To resolve this problem, verify that the Remote Desktop licensing mode configured on the RD Session Host server matches the type of
RDS CALs installed on the Remote Desktop license server. If required, purchase and install additional RDS CALs as needed for this Remote Desktop license server.
(Note I have removed the server name and IP address due to company policy.) I have confirmed that every server in my Citrix farm has its terminal services configuration set for "per device" licensing and I have also specified the name of the 2008
R2 server rather than allow the servers to automatically find the licensing server. I have confirmed that my 2008 R2 server is configured for "per device" licensing.
The IP addresses I have seen in the event log messages are the IP addresses of a Citrix server rather than one of the thin-clients, and so far every Citrix server we have has appeared in one of these event log messages. I have been able
to determine that this event does not occur when a thin-client is connecting up nor does this event occur when I remotely log into the server.
As I noted above we only have 15 thin-clients using the 85 licenses so we have 70 available licenses for the Citrix servers so why are we out of licenses? What is this message trying to tell me?
    Thanks
    Brent

    Hi Bent,
According the Event ID 21, I think you might have the license connection issues with RDS CALs. I suggest you analyze some relative services and
make sure your network without any misconfiguration.
Hopefully, there is an article describes how to troubleshoot this license issue on the terminal server.
Event ID 21 — Terminal Services Client Access License (TS CAL)
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/library/A98D84AC-B824-4F00-BF58-3CFF23493BF9.aspx
By the way, the license of Windows Server 2003 does not support to assign CAL to allow user to access the Windows Server 2008. You should buy a
new Windows Server 2008 license to meet the requirement above if necessary.
    Hope this helps.

  • Windows 2012 R2 RDS Licensing Issue

I setup RDS License Server role in our domain controller server and installed open license RDS User CAL. From the connection broker server, I setup RDS Deployment's RD Licensing to per user and added the domain controller from the license server
list. RD Licensing Diagnoser output is ok and able to detect the license server. All servers are windows 2012 R2.
Now the issue is, when using RD Web access and launching the application, the license manager is still showing 0 issued license. Tried opening several sessions, more than the number of license seats available and still RDS still works fine. Wondering
whether license server is functioning properly. Let me know if someone experienced the same thing.
    Thanks!
    Joe

    Hi Joe,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Have you find any specific error\event id for this case?
As you have Per User CAL  and to see your Per User RDS CAL usage you need to create a report, save it to a .csv file, and then view the csv file in Notepad/Excel. We can do this in RD Licensing Manager by right-clicking on the server name, choosing Create
Report - Per User CAL Usage, and then after you have the report right-click on it and choose to save it as csv.
    Hope it helps!

  • RDS 2012 issues after disabling SSL 3.0

Hi all, we have Server 2012 R2 RDS infrastructure. I have 2 servers running RD web, gateway, and conn broker using Windows network load balancing. 3 RDSH servers behind them handling user workload.
Last night I disabled SSL 3.0 on both of these servers using the registry key 'Enabled' set to zero in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\SSL 3.0\Server. Servers were rebooted after this change.
I did not disable SSL 3.0 on the RDSH servers yet, but I don't think it matters in this situation because the SSL traffic only passes between the remote computer and the RDGW server, AFAIK.
Today all the remote users were having issues with remote desktop sessions disconnecting them, but they would reconnect after a short time. They all told me this is unusual, normally the connections are quite stable. After I turned SSL 3.0 back on and rebooted,
no more issues, users are happy. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there anything that can be done to stabilize connections while SSL 3.0 is disabled?

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Did they receive any precise error when SSL3 is disabled?
What’s your client OS and RDP version using for your network?
If you would like to continue with SSL3 disabled you may try to change the RDP Security Layer under Security Layer.
When you are using RD Security Layer you are susceptible to MITM attack because there is no Server Authentication. I suggest you re-enable TLS 1.0 and have a ssl certificate from a public authority set on your RDP-Tcp listener.

  • Cant Create VDI collection in server 2012 r2 Transfer location failure

I'm setting up a 2012 R2 VDI install and having problems creating the VDI collection. No matter what target folder I specify as the transfer location, it says "VDI collection failed with the following errors: Unable to copy the virtual desktop to the
export location. Check if the export location exists and if it is configured with the correct permissions."
That has to be an erroneous error because when I type the share location into the Deployment properties, it checks for the share an won't let me specify an invalid location.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling RDS as completely as I can but I cant seem to get rid of this problem. Where are these deployment properties stored and how can I delete them so they get recreated by the install?
    Please help!

It turns out that the error was not a problem with the transfer share. Something in the configuration prevented the hyper-v host server from connecting to the broker where the transfer share was located. Net use commands run the host produced an "error
53". Removing the Hyper-V did NOT solve the problem nor did removing the updated network drivers. The only solution I found was to remove the entire RDS installation from all the servers in the installation and reload Windows server 2012 R2 on the Hyper-V
    host from scratch.
Once those tasks were completed, everything ran as expected.
I found the following article to actually be useful: http:  //blog.itvce.com/?p=1569
It clearly explains most of the steps to install RDS VDIs simply and quickly. I'm still waiting for Microsoft to produce a simple brief step by step that includes component high availability and that explains how the system actually works both from a user
perspective as well as an administrator role. While it may exist out there somewhere, It is obscured by the countless third-party attempts to document these steps.
I'm disappointed that MS leaves it to third parties to document their products.
As for this installation, you must figure out the steps in a test environment and be prepared to rebuild your servers along the way, as uninstalling the RDS product components does not work properly as is typical with many MS products of the past. Also,
make sure all your chipset and network drivers are up to date as many of mine installed using "MS generic" drivers that simply do not work properly in the Hyper-V environment.

  • SCEP 2012 and VDI offline servicing

I've seen this question being asked before in another thread (Best practice to run Microsoft Endpoint Protection client in VDI environment) however the answer doesn't provide enough information (for me at least)
We are planning to use a Citrix XenDesktop environment with Provisioning services providing VDI clients. As far as I know the SCCM client will be installed in the VDI golden image and after some adjustments SCCM client registration will go well. We will
also use SCCM 2012 and deploy SCEP 2012 for anti-malware scanning.
SCCM 2012 provides offline servicing for Software Updates in WIM images, but what is a best practice in keeping the VDI's up-to-date? I can't find any good information about this, so maybe the answer is very simple?... Is there a way to offline service the
VDI image so Software Updates and Anti-Malware updates are injected in the image?
Or do the VDI's get updated as physical systems, at the time they are logged in to the network, discarding all changes when logging off. This doesn't seem the right way to go.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thx. Niels

I struggled with this same problem for a while, and likewise didn't find a great answer anywhere. In our case, this is for an RDS VDI environment, but the solution I ended up employing should work anywhere.
First, set up SCCM/WSUS to download the updates to a UNC share (if you haven't already; here's a helpful guide:
http://blog.thesysadmins.co.uk/sccm-2012-scep-unc-definition-updates-automation-powershell.html). Also, create an antimalware policy for the VDI machines with the definition updates source set to UNC only, and set the UNC Path section accordingly.
Here's the key part: create a scheduled task in your master image to run based on boot or resume (RDS puts the VDI VMs in a Saved state rather than Off). Here are the settings I used for the task:
General tab: I set it to run as the SCCM Network Access Account; Run whether user is logged on or not
Triggers tab: Begin the task On an event; Basic; Log: System; Source: Kernel-General; Event ID: 1 (this pops up on a startup or resume event); Delay task for: 5 minutes (during VM creation, it boots the machine for just a couple minutes, and I
didn't want this task to be interrupted by a shutdown halfway through); Enabled
Actions tab: Action: Start a program; Program/script: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\MpCmdRun.exe"; Add arguments: -SignatureUpdate
I left the other tabs with their defaults
In RDS, the VMs on creation are spun up briefly and then put into a Saved state. It then spins up just a few, waiting for users to connect. By the time a user logs in, the machine should have the latest updates, but even if it doesn't, it should be
no more than ~5 minutes before it does.
    Hope this helps!

  • File editing RDS(?) error

I am having a rather unusual problem while editing CF files
in Dreamweaver CS3. On a number of files, when I try to edit,
Dreamweaver crashes and gives me a generic error message. There's
no real rhyme or reason and it appears to getting worse. At first,
I could edit a file and save it. Then when I try to make other
changes it crashes immediately. In other cases, DW crashes as soon
as I click the mouse on the line I want to edit.
I am not the only user at my company experiencing this. A
remote user is also experiencing the same issue. We use RDS for the
connection. This problem has just started in the last couple of
days. We have rebooted the server, in the hopes that maybe it was
an RDS connection issue, but the problem persists.
Any ideas on what's going on?
    Thanks,

that's affecting our systems. Everything's workingnow.

  • RDS Per Device CAL - Where is it stored on the Client?

I'm having an issue with running out of CALs too quickly. 70 clients with 100 Licenses.
I have Deep Freeze on several of the Thin Clients. After restarting the thin clients the revert back to a default state, removing any changes. I believe that when my RDS server issues a CAL to one of these, the thin client looses the issues CAL to it once
it restarts. SO my question is, where Does the CAL get stored specifically so I can allow that area to be changed.

    Hi Jmair,
When Per Device licensing mode is used, and a client computer or device connects to an RD Session Host server for the first time, the client computer or device is issued a temporary
license by default. When a client computer or device connects to an RD Session Host server for the second time, if the license server is activated and enough RDS Per Device CALs are available, the license server issues the client computer or device a permanent,
RDS Per Device CAL. The temporary license is valid for 90 days.
An RDS Per User CAL gives one user the right to access an RD Session Host server from an unlimited number of client computers or devices. RDS Per User CALs are not enforced
by RD Licensing. As a result, client connections can occur regardless of the number of RDS Per User CALs installed on the license server. This does not absolve administrators from Microsoft Software License Terms requirements to have a valid RDS Per User CAL
for each user. Failure to have an RDS Per User CAL for each user, if Per User licensing mode is being used, is a violation of the license terms.
Client will get a Temp CAL while it firstly logged on the RDS server. After the client logged off and logged on the RDS Server again. The client will get a permanent CAL. So
you could see the temp CALs, it’s expected behavior.

Hi we have a VDI environment with a link clone image for all users. Only one user(admin1) login to the virtual desktop got this error, ....windows explorer stop working and requires restart it. it is the same issue after restart it, change a PC, change another
VDI client version, always same issue. Tried other users with these pc and client and has no issue at all. All use the same pool, same snapshot and same image. Windows 7 32bit OS. also tried to delete the profile folder and let it recreate it , it's redirected

    Hi,
    Please first take a try to run SFC /Scannow command under the user account;
Further, we may take a try to fix the user profile through the steps mentioned in the below article:
    Fix a corrupted user profile
For the error message about Windows Explorer has stopped working, here is a KB article talking about it:
    Windows Explorer has stopped working
The issue might be caused by some applications or services running under that user account, please try the method mentioned in the above article for detailed troubleshooting.
