I'm having the same issue as well - I'm using an External Seagate 400GB Drive that's USB Firewire combo. If I connect using firewire, the drive works, but I need the firewire port for another device. I did the update with the Seagate connected on a Mac Mini when things stopped working using the USB port. I unfortunately updated both my Mac Mini and my MacBook Pro at the same time. I tried connecting the drive via USB to my MacBook Pro and it didn't work. It's wierd - sometimes the drive will show up in the System Profiler, but haven't been able to get it to show up in Disk Utility. Things work fine when I connect via USB to my Windows system though. I'm on the phone with support right now. If we figure it out, I'll be sure to post... I doubt support will be able to provide me with a fix since this obviously has something to do with the 10.4.9 update.

I have a LaCie 3.5" 250G external drive which is working fine on my MBP 2.16G. I am however connecting this via an Apple USB keyboard.

Basically, the only way I've been able to get this to work is by connecting it via the Apple USB keyboard.
It would appear certain USB Mass-Storage devices stopped mounting when connecting directly to the USB ports on Intel machines once upgraded to 10.4.9.

I tried your suggestion, and it's been giving me the message "Preparing for Backup" for the past 8 hours. Does this mean TM is backing up my hard drive? The Events and Projects you want to update have to be in a Final Cut Projects folder and a Final Cut Events folder at the root level of the Hard Drive on which they are stored. Then in FCP X under file menu select Update Projects and Events and navigate and select the Hard Drive where they are stored.

I can't seem to find any other posts about this problem.
I have three external hard rives connect by a USB hub to my iMac.
Problem is that if I turn on the hard drive(s) AFTER start up I get a message that the drive either was not recognized by the OS or that it was ejected unexpectedly.
I get the same issue but not all the time if I turn them on before I boot the iMac.
I used the disk drive utility to "repair" the drives but they always come back as "probably ok".
If I restart the iMac with the drives connected (on), it seems to work but not all the time.
A bit annoying as I am wondering if the drives are OK or not.
I don't always need the drives as they are for backing up images from my camera using Apreture.
This all began after i did the latest security update.
is the update to blame?

Yes, you can still use those instructions to reset the PRAM.
You said that you booted to your install disk and that your primary drive did not show up at the Select a Destination screen? That usually means that the computer is either not recognizing your partition, or it's not recognizing the hard drive itself.
Start with this article and follow all the steps even if you already tried them. I suspect that you'll get to step 4 and you'll end up having to call Applecare. If you haven't done those steps, they're most likely going to make you do them anyway, so you might as well get them done before the call.

La cie external hard drive problem

just bought a new G5 mac pro after my old G5 gave up on me.
installed all the software and attached the external hard drive ( la Cie,I reformatted it for Time Machine ), scanner and printer.
In the first week had a few freezes and twice, after a long start-up, found corrupt files. The files that were corrupt were files that I worked on that day, not older files, of course also the files on my back-up Hd were corrupt.
After reading some threads I found that maybe the scanner or external drive could be the problem.
So detached those and so far no problem. My guess is that it has to do with the La Cie external hard drive. I don't have a serial# for that drive, but it is a design by F.A.porsche. I read that the drive has to be a FAT32 formatting??
Is there something I should do with that drive so it would work in a normal order?

Just to clear things up, the G5 was PowerPC and had "PowerMac" name. The Mac Pro is Intel only and only an outside resemblance.
You never want to migrate applications from G5 PPC to Intel, causes problems. Install fresh and avoid the pitfalls.
LaCie is really the most common culprit. Their power adapters, but also their poor cables - both USB and FireWire.
You don't mention, but just in case, don't daily chain; or mix hard drives and other types - get a separate PCI controller even.
TimeMachine must be GPT and HFS+ and there is no such thing as a case that must have Master Boot Record and FAT formatting.
Invest in Disk Warrior to handle disk maintenance - preventative.

USB Hard Drive no longer recognized after SW Update

I just updated Cisco software and my external hard drive is no longer recognized by Cisco. It is a Seagate drive that is listed on the Cisco tested - passed - approved list. It worked prior to this update. I have disconnected the drive. Reconnected it. Rebooted. Turned machine and router on and off and its still not recognized. Any ideas? Thank you, Jim S.

It's great to hear that everything is back up and running.
However, just in case you missed some step while upgrading Cisco Connect or Firmware. These are the steps.

HP Envy m6, Updated for Windows 8.1, hard drive needs to reboot

I've just updated my software to get the new Windows 8.1. On completing my updates, I recieved a message saying my hard drive has changed and that I need to reboot it. How do I do this? Do I risk losing my files? HELP

Hello hpenvym6beats. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. I understand the computer provided a message, indicating the hard drive has changed. It shouldn't become a huge issue, as it does occur sometimes, after completing updates. Just turn off the computer and turn it back on. Your files should not be lost, after completing this task.

USB Hard Drive Disappears after 10.6.3 update

My Samsung S2 640 GB USB portable hard drive is missing from Desktop, Finder and Disk Utility-- but visible in System Profiler after 10.6.3 update. It was fine before the update.
Plugged directly into rear of iMac, I changed cables and slots-- no joy. Even tried a double USB cable as there is no external power supply.
Four other USB HDs work just fine in all slots om the iMac , and this Samsung S2 works fine in my MacBook SL 10.6.3
I bought an identical Samsung S2 and it had the same problems-- so it's not the drive.
Suggestions?

Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer when done.

Lastest Update 10.4.3 & External Hard Drive Problems?

My problems started 2 days ago when I could not copy new music to my ipod shuffle. I kept getting error "...could not be read from or written to..." I had run the new ipod update 1.1.3 so I restored to factory settings and used previous updater 1.1.2. Seemed to be fine for the time being. Later I tried to import music from a CD, wouldn't import, same message. Tried to download a song from the Music Store, same thing.
(For some additional info, I have 2 external hard drives. On hard drive One I keep my iTunes media, iPhoto media and a mirror backup of my Documents folder from my internal drive, and miscellaneous other big files I don't want to bog down my internal drive. My second external hard drive is just for digital media when running final cut pro. I dont' use this drive much. The first hard drive is not partitioned but the second one is and I noticed yesterday that only one partition was coming up.
I began to realize that my problem with iTunes was not with iTunes itself but a drive issue. I did a quick test and set the internal drive as the main drive to store iTunes music to and did a test download from the Music Store and it worked just fine. So now my problem is something related to perhaps the latest update to 10.4.3 and my external drives.
Just a couple things I tried this morning before I had to leave for work.
1)Tried to copy a file to the external drive one and it wouldn't copy. Got a message saying the file name was too long, which no matter how short I make the name, nothing will copy to the drive.
2) Tried to open a photo from the external drive in Photoshop and it wouldn't open.
3) Strangley, I can still just play music in iTunes even though coming off the same drive as the above issue #2.
4) General question. When I do updates is it wise to not have external drives turned on when updating. I remembered that I did have them turned on when I did lastest update.
Perhaps this is my error.
Anyone else having external hard drive issues, please send your ideas my way...

I did install the combo update 10.4.3 again and it helped one of my drives. Luckily it's the one I use everyday with my iTunes, and iPhoto libraries and all my other important stuff. The second drive that's partitioned into 3 parts still had problems. One more partition came back bur the third part I just couldn't retrieve and had to blank it. I also had an issue with a corrupt iphoto library and had to rebuild my library.
So I'm almost back up to having my problems resolved. I have also noticed speed issues. Things seem a bit slower since the update. I'll keep workin on it.

Windows 7 64-bit update won't run after hard drive replacement HP G62-144DX

Replaced hard drive, ran recovery discs, everything OK except that windows 7 64-bit would not update. Services showed windows update to be running, but update gave error message: service not started. Reinstalled old hard drive which before all tests had showed drive to be defective and tried again, this time all ran Ok and windows update ran. This time all tests showed the orginal hard drive to be OK.

La Cie External Hard Drive has trouble mounting!

I have a similar problem to some of those that have posted,but any help is appreciated. I have a 160GB La Cie Porsche external hard drive that will not mount on my desktop of either a G4 running 10.3 or an ibook running 10.4.4. In both instances, I try and run Disk Utility in which the device appears, however I am unable to verify or repair it due to an "Input/Output error." I tried Disk Warrior but the drive does not appear.
I have gotten some advice that the device is probably formatted as MS_DOS/Fat32 device and that I should reformat as Mac OS-extended. Fine. But I at least need the information that is on that drive before I do anything. Any advice or any programs that will allow me to do so? Thanks

Try a few things:
attach the drive to your cpu with a different cable.
attach the drive to your cpu thru a different firewire port on both the cpu and the drive.
Have you been using this drive long? If it's new, outta the box chances are this is merely a formatting issue. I recall the LaCie website and the literature that comes with their drives covers this stuff.
I hate to add this but the Porshe design drives are famous for their failure rates - Sometimes right outta the box they are DOA.

After updating ram and to SSD hard drive bluetooth no longer works

Updated my two sets of hynix 2GB ram to two sets of Crucial 4GB ram (8GB total), and then also installed a Samsung 1TB SSD hard drive.
Now my Bluetooth does not recognize any devices at all.
I'm using a Mid-2010 Macbook Pro 17" 2.53 ghtz on the most recent version of Mavericks.
(In order to update to the SSD drive, I inserted the blank drive, formatted it using my install discs, then did an internet OS install of Mavericks, and used Migration Assistant to import all my old data. Everything else is working perfectly fine.)

I do not know what happened, but try resetting the SMC (might help, cannot hurt).

In need of a script that will update tv shows on external hard-drive

Hi everyone I have a really specific question about scripts. Okay, so my dad regularly downloads various TV shows and movies etc
and I have a neighbor named Darian who once a week gives me an external hard drive and I update a whole bunch of TV shows. Now my problem is that each time he gives me the hard drive, it takes me about 20-30 mins to update all of the TV shows because they
are in different TV show folders, I was wondering if it is possible to make a script that when run would automatically copy all of the shows onto Darian's hard drive and then all I have to do is copy the movies which is pretty quick, here's another problem,
all of the movies and tv shows are not on my computer but on my dad's computer, so when I copy the stuff I have to access his pc through the network and I always have to type his username and password to access his pc, so if someone could tell me if it is
possible, the code I need and how to run it or pretty much any help, I would be very gratful, thanks in advance (:

I also believe that it would be good for you to get a book on how to use Windows in a home network. All of what you ask can be done without any scripts. It is all part of basic WIndows and is designed to make this possible and easy for home users
but you stil need to study how the system works.

Can't update to Mavericks, says my hard drive is backup

When trying to update to Mavericks, the system won't do it and only says that the selected drive is used for time machine backups. This is my hard drive, and I don't use it for time machine backups.

You have got the "Backups.backupdb" folder in the root level of your hard drive, and this is the folder used by Time Machine to create backups. Because of that, the OS X Mavericks installer thinks your hard drive is being used by Time Machine.
To fix this, you need to remove the folder:
1. Open a Finder window, select the Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type:
2. Delete "Backups.backupdb", and if there was nothing in it, empty the Trash.
3. Run the Mavericks installer and follow the steps
