Re: 7th day of Sysmas sweepstakes! Feelin' lucky?

An EMP bomb...
* New gear (Iphone, laptop, switches, servers,...) payed by the insurance...
* Long holiday during shipping off the gear, without any interruptions because nothing can be wrong, there's no gear left...
* Clean start in sharepoint, datastorage, finally removing all the old files that some employees keep just in case but never never never ever going to use again because all the data is so ancient and allowing me to build it in a logical structurized way.
And offcourse, because I did such a great work, installing the new gear and spending so much time at work, a pay raise that doubles my present wage...
So only possitives...
If anyone has a spare EMP, give me a pm, I will be very gratefull.
@Spiceworks, maybe you can include one in the goodies?

All I want for Sysmas are vendors that supply what we need when we need it, rather than 4 - 8 weeks time.
Seriously, I could fly home, buy it in a local store and fly back the next day. But everything here takes 4 - 8 weeks to arrive!

  • How do you get notified that something is down?

My servers are setup to let me know when something fails and another part of the server takes over, or when something fails over to a different server entirely... but the other day I had a network failure and didnt find out until my cloud based wireless management solution notified me that it could no longer communicate with our APs. I tried to remote access anything on the network and couldnt.
What can I use to remotely monitor my infrastructure so this doesnt happen again? What does everyone else use? I have a couple linux vps I use to code/test things on and could setup something simple like if unreachable send email... would that work? I guess I'm unclear on what possible solutions there are.

The job market is always changing, and the last decade has seen a huge shift in high paying careers that previously did not exist. They are new but extremely important in today’s economy. These jobs will exist well into the future, and employees who make the commitment will be well paid for years to come.
    Programmatic Marketing
Many companies have realized the importance of digital marketing. Pretty much every company can benefit from a solid digital marketing program, but many are spending too much time and effort. Programmatic marketing is the process by which companies automate their media buys and make data driven decisions. Programmatic marketers specialize in these areas. Right now programmatic is more popular at bigger companies with larger budgets, but even small businesses are going along with the trend. As more and more people...

  • Run Crontab based on Business Days

I need to set up a job in the crontab to only run on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 8th BUSINESS day (Mon - Fri) of the month. Does anyone know how to do this?

    <pre>
I am not sure whether I got it correctly. OK, which I
interprete is you want to the job (lets say it run_my_prog)
to run on 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 8th day of the month provided
it falls between mon-fri. So it say 4th of the month falls on
sunday, then it should not run. Or otherwise if Friday falls
on 7th day of the month then also it should not run.
I could not find direct way (quickly), so I made a intermediate
    script as :
    Put this entry in crontab:
    15 3 * * 1-5 /etc/myscript
This will run /etc/myscript every mon-fri at 3:15am.
And /etc/myscript would be like this:
    #cat /etc/myscript
    x=`date | tr -s " " " " | cut -f3 -d " "`
    case $x in
    2|3|4|5|8) ./run_my_prog ;;
    esac
rnu_my_prog will be your intended job. I have not tried this,
but looks like this will work.
    Thanks

  • Engineer not showed up - wasted day, still got fau...

Reported a line fault on 14th Feb - told would be fixed by end of 19th.
Not fixed - got a test saying to phone for engineer visit.
Phoned call centre - had to wait for ages in useless PRESS X for this, that and the other.
Finally got to an operator after 5 minutes of waiting. Explained problem. Operator confused, had to explain again.
    Was passed to someone else.
This person booked an engineer visit for next day between 8am and 1pm but told me I would have to pay £120 if there was a problem in my house, even though I'd had a text from BT to book an engineer vist!
Waited in the next day ( now the 20th - 6 days with fault )
Of course, no engineer turns up, no phone call to cancel or anything. Half a day wasted.
    Phoned call centre.
Takes 6 minutes to get to a human. That human can not help me. Transferred to another human. By now I have been 25 minutes on the phone. I am fuming.
Have to explain problem ALL OVER AGAIN!!!
Human apologises ( that makes me feel no better ). Says he can book me a new visit the next day.
I go mental at this point.
    I am fed up.
BT has the worst customer service in Britain.
Now 7th day with phone and broadband fault.
Top CEOs and managers at BT should be ashamed of this appaling level of service.
It is only that they have a monopoly on infrastructure in non-cable areas that they get away with this lousy level of service.
    Can anyone help ?

It has come to my attention tonight due to another caller also on my local exchange phoning me at home that there has been a massive mess-up at KINGLSEY exchange in Cheshire ( Openreach id: LVKIN ) and loads of peoples lines have been transposed. i.e. I am receiving incoming calls for the number 01928 787XXX and *that* number is receiving *my* incoming calls for my number 01928 788YYY.
Also my caller id is given out as the swapped line number and thier caller id is *my* number.
Apparently this has happened to scores ( hundreds? ) of numbers out of the Kingsley exchange and happened last Monday ( the day before I reported my fault ).
This is SERIOUS and *no info* at all has been given out in the local area except by word of mouth of neighbours who experience the problem.
This needs relaying to BT call centre that anyone reporting a problem with a Kingsley exchange number ( 0192878 ) is probably a victim of this mess-up and needs an engineer visit A.S.A.P.
It is not *anything* to do with the customer's property but a major issue at the exchange that needs to be sorted.
Never mind how this will affect bills ( swapped bills ? ) or broadband ( I can't login even though I get an ADSL sync - probably due to the phone number reporting itself incorrectly to the broadband login computer ).
BT - if you are listening. This is *serious* and I am *not making this up* - it is a very serious and big problem at an exchange KINGSLEY, Cheshire. And there needs to be an information campaign in the area as people are completely oblivious to the problem until you start to get what you think are a lot of incoming wrong number calls.

    Hi all,
Fairly new to BT Infinity 2 here, had absolutely no problem with my Internet until 4 days ago, when my Home Hub 5 started restarting every 5 minutes. After about a day of this, it finaly stabilised 3 days ago, only to start again by night. Then, from my normal 78Mbps I started getting lower speeds at every restart. first to 74, then 68, 59 and now 52.
I guess this is because I was affected by the restart issue, and from what I read I am now on the interleaved path.
I also noticed that the "fix" was supposed to go out on the 19th, yet I had another restart this morning. How do I know if I received this fix, and that this is not a line fault?

    Hi mate,
Think you've got it spot on - your stats look great, sounds like your Profile is being reduced due to the hub restarting itself.
If the patch sorts out the restarting issue thenDLM should adjust you back to full speed in a few days (in theory).
Just for your info, DLM can take up to two to three weeks to increase speeds. if it does it in a few days you will be exceptionally lucky.
    Oh, I know
Currently experiencing just how slow it is after a fault on my line dropped me from ~44Mbps (before the issue) to ~12Mbps (now the issue is sorted).
I've been graced with an extra 1500Kbps every 48hrs since last friday: currently enjoying a blistering 16Mbps

  • Finding Day from Date i.e. Monday, Tuesday etc

    Hi,
I need to find out the day from Date. i.e. Monday, Tuesday etc. This is because if the date falls on Saturday or Sunday need to charge difference rates and on weekdays having normal rates.
    Thanks,
    Amol

We should probably add a function for this as I've certainly seen the requirement before.
Fortunately it's pretty easy to calculate using a simple rule - the trick is to pick a date in the past that was a Monday, and then use the modulo operator.
    For example:
The day of the week = (the given date - 1980-01-07) modulo 7
ie the 7th of January 1980 was a Monday, so every 7th day after that is also a Monday - so combined with the modulo operator this will give you:
    0 monday
    1 tuesday
    5 saturday
    6 sunday
The only downside is that dates before 1980-01-07 will give a negative modulo (this is distinct from the mathematical modulo operator, but is necessary to be symmetric with the integer division operator truncating towards zero) - so dates before the baseline date will give:
    0 monday
    -6 tuesday
    -2 saturday
    -1 sunday
You can either choose to write the rules to take this into account, or choose a baseline date so far in the past that it's unnecessary.

    Andrew

  • Does de-authorising reduce the authorisation count?

I have heard rumour that de-authorising previously authorised PC/devices doesn't actually reduce the activation count for ADE.
    I this true?
I got a bit carried away when I 1st started and authorised 3 PCs at home and my bebook reader. My bebook reader had to be returned due to fault - unfortunately I didn't de-authorise it before it  - adobe support tells me that there's nothing I can do about that (so that's one activation gone) and when the replacement reader turns up another activation will be used - that will be five in total - so if de-authorising does nothing to the count I'm left with one authorisation till the end of time - I've asked suppoort about this and haven't had an answer - I'm a little wary of buying more ADE books if the authorisations run out (due to pc failure or reader failure or uprades of either) and being stuck with a library I can't access.
I've checked around the forums and it looks like exceeding the authorisation count is not an uncommon problem and there appears little progress on fixing the problem on Adobe's part.
I am still waiting for a reply to the last post.
Following is my discussion with support -
Ok I understand that I can't de-activate the reader now it has been returned but assuming I keep using digital editions for years to
come, as PCs die or need the hard-drive replaced/reformated and the breakdown usually occurs without warning (ie I don't get the ch
ance to de-activate the PC) won't I eventually run out of activations? (I've already lost one to the returned ebook, one on the PC I
download with and one to the new reader when it arrives)
Under those circumstances do I have to then create a new accounbt and lose access to all my previously purchased ebooks?
I would have thought the record of authorisations would be held by adobe and therefore able to be removed/reset by adobe.
I'm just trying to understand the authorisation process before I invest too much in digital edition ebooks.
The number of authorisations is something else I'm little confused about I read in one place that I could have 6 PCs AND 5 ebooks de
vices but I think I reade on the adbode site that it is only 5 PCs or devices in total.
Thanks for your assistance with these queries

Hi, I'm new to digital editions and I tried installing and authorizing three PCs and one ebook reader while learning how to use digi
tal editions (got a bit carried away).
My ebook reader has a fault and I'm returning it and expect to recieve a new unit soon. My question is how do I go about deactivatin
g the ebook reader prior to return and can I deactivate the PCs so I can authorize only the PCs I need. I assume without deactivatin
g something I will run out of activations at some point.
I suppose if I could de-authorize everything and start again that would be great - assuming I don't lose the rights to the books I h
    ave already purchased.

    >I have heard rumour that de-authorising previously authorised  PC/devices doesn't actually reduce the activation count for ADE.
    >I  this true?
Yes, you only want to deauthorize when getting rid of a machine (as a step remove your personal information), or when directed to by a competent tech support person.
If you run out of activations you will need to contact tech support by going to http://www.adobe.com/support/digitaleditions and clicking on 'Submit a web case'

As per IT dept we have to deduct TDS at the time of crediting the vendor or any other suspense a/c and deposit it by next month by 7th day . To avoid non deduction of TDS against such provisional expenses we used to reverse the same entry on the 1st of next month:-

The entries are huge and so many Exp get debited & GR/IR A/c get credited. Thus there is a very much possibility that the IT person or IT Auditor treat it(GR/IR) as suspense a/c and can give comments on his report about non deduction/deposition of TDS.
In SAP there is an option to transfer all these credit open items into an clearing a/c and reverse it in the 1st of next month. But that time entry will be a sunder:-
On the last date of the month
    GR/IR Account   Dr
C/L Prov Clearing A/c  Cr    (It will be created)
On the first date of the month
    C/L Prov Clearing A/c  Dr
    GR/IR Account           Cr
But again C/L Prov Clearing A/c can be interpreted as a supense A/c.
    We need entries like under:-
On the last date of the month let all credit open item of GR/IR as it is.
On the first date of the next month all Credit Line items document to be reversed and again reposting of same on the same day.
I,e all Exp to be credited
         All GR/IR to be debited
(Revarsal of all open GR/IR credit line items) on 1st of next month
On same day again the original entries which are reversed to be created
    All Exp to be deited
    All GR/Ir to be credited.
Whether above is possible, if not then how other companies in India are handling the issue.

    Alok

  • SolidWorks x64 Edition up and running on Mac Pro

I have the 64-bit version of Solidworks running on my Mac Pro and it's a screamer!
I used Solidworks 2007 x64 Edition on Windows XP x64 Professional on my Mac Pro for a solid 3 hours today at work. I had no problems other than a slow SATA hard-drive issue that is well known and remains unfixed on my machine. However, once Windows has loaded the registry with the program guts it runs like a top, just don't expect it to load up a program for the first time blazingly fast and you'll be fine.
Be that as it may, even with all the hardware issues I still have, SolidWorks is AWESOME on the Mac Pro, even better than any other Intel boxes I've used previously. To be fair, I don't have any experience with SW 2007 x64 on real XP x64 box.
(I posted this on another thread earlier, but at the time I didn't know what I was doing. I felt this information would be of better use under this category.)
For those who want to do this and run the x64 version of XP here's the drivers and the drill:
My Windows software is sourced from a free download of x64 120 day trial version from Windows.
Interestingly enough, I called Microsoft and asked what happens after 120 days, the answer was...."I don't know"...
    weird.
Anyway, for those who don't know how to get the format of the download file to be correct for Boot Camp to recognize it as a Windows CD, here's the procedure.
This is all done on the Mac Pro.
    1. Download XPx64 from: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/facts/trial.mspx
    2. Open Disk Utility
    2. Double click downloaded file: WS03SP1RTM_1830_PX6EN.iso (this will allow you to see it in Disk Utility)
    3. In Disk Utility select the WS0...EN.iso file mentioned previously and click the "convert" button.
    4. When the "Save as" box pops up set the location to wherever you want ( I named the file the same name w/o the .iso extension and put it on my desktop) and set the Image Format to "DVD/CD master", Encryption to "none"
    5. After saving the file, it will show up with a new extension *.cdr. Double click this file in the Disk Utility drive list.
    6. After Finder finishes launching the file, go back to Disk Utility and select your new *.cdr file and click the Partition button to the right.
    7. Once in the partition window, select Options and set the partition scheme to "Master Boot Record", hit OK.
    8. After getting back in the partition window, select Volume Scheme and set to "1 partition", The size should be around 558.62 MB (don't worry about the format set to mac OS extended and the other greyed functions)
    9. Select the Burn icon, insert your CD-R, set your post burning options, and have a Coke and a smile. Verify the file format is ISO 9660 file system by selecting the "get info" on the CD under "Finder".
**TIP #1 - make sure you've printed out the e-mail from Microsoft outlining the setup instructions and including the CD-Key. Don't be like me and get 98% through the Windows setup where it asks you for CD-Key and have to power off the computer and get it out of OS X.**
**TIP #2 - Since you are using an Apple keyboard Windows doesn't seem to be able to use it on the blue screen portion of the install. My remedy (after assuming the install locked up 6 times in a row) is to go find a cheap-o usb keyboard and mouse lying around (probably standard Microsoft stuff in your closet) and plug it in to be back of your Mac Pro tower. You do not need to go through the Mac OS hardware setup thing that pops up.
    10. After printing out your MS instruction e-mail and plugging in your keyboard and mouse (see above), launch Boot Camp (don't even try to use the driver CD it makes, it's useless for XP x64) and install XP x64.
    11. Have a beer and a smile, you will need the alcohol in your blood from here on out.
**TIP #3 - go buy 2 or 3 magazines and get a comfortable chair.**
    12. Install Windows, follow the Boot Camp Beta instructions carefully until you get to the part where you install the driver CD. It won't work.
    13. Follow these links to get the x64 drivers:
    Audio: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlhd-2.aspx?lineid=2004052&famid=2004052&ser ies=2004061&Software=True&title=HD%20Audio%20CODECs
Nvidia Graphics driver for the 7300GT (remember, this is for Win XP x64 edition so it's not the same as the regularly posted 32 bit version):
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp64_91.47.html
LAN drivers (Be sure to get the x64 version):
Download PROEM64T.exe from the Intel website
    13. Update Windows.
**NOTE: I am still having the same driver issues as others that have installed XP x64 on a Mac Pro, for example the Apple keyboard and mouse function, but the CtlAltDel and Eject CD disk remain non functional.**
    14. Install SolidWorks 2007 x64 from the included DVD in your software update box that came in the mail last week.
    15. GO TO BED...IT'S 4:30 am!!!
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Microsoft XP x64 Professional
Please correct me on any driver postings if they are in error or missing. These are the ones I used and they are working for me. I do not claim to be a guru (this is only my 7th day of using Macintosh in my entire life), I'm just a CAD guy that has a MacNut for a boss. It was either adapt or die, so I'm hapilly adapted.

    Alright CT, here's the deal.
You'll need to update windows first, they have the HD USB audio device driver update on Windows Update. After this, install the RealTek driver you downloaded earlier. Don't worry about windows saying it found a device but can't find the driver for it, that'll be fixed when you run the Realtek install program.
As far as the broken stuff in Device Manager, it's the usual stuff everyone has (be sure to go to "view", "show hidden devices" to see all the stuff) :
    -USB human interface device
    -Other device
-unknown device x3 (you will note there is also one unknown device on the Mac os)
    -Intel(R) 5000 Series Chipset PCI Express x4 (Port 3 thru Port7)
As far as performance goes, BIG IMPROVEMENT! I did the slipstream fix using the 64bit drivers (obviously) and found out the hard way that you do infact have to use Boot Camp and delete and recreate the partition for a reinstall.
(tried to install on top of existing installation twice...failed twice. Suck!)
I used the picture guide located at:
    http://st118.startlogic.com/~macproxp/index.html
I don't understand all the super-geek evaluation stuff when using the recommended evaluation SiSoftware Sandra, but it looks like the drive is listed as a:
    ST3250824AS (P)ATA
I thought this driver was supposed to turn it into a SATA drive. Maybe it did and I'm just an idiot. So, I downloaded HD tune (give me a chart anyday over a bunch of gobbledy-gook numbers & letters) and installed it.
Here are the numbers after making about 40 copies of a 59.8 MB file on the desktop to the desktop (to try and tax the processor/hd):
    HD Tune: ST3250824AS P Benchmark
    Transfer Rate Minimum : 0.6 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 66.9 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average : 20.2 MB/sec
    Access Time : 13.0 ms
    Burst Rate : 152.4 MB/sec
    CPU Usage : 1.5%
This is no where close to 3GB/sec, but a helluva lot faster than 35KB/sec like before, pretty dang fast nonetheless.
Hopefull someone smarter that me can figure out if I'm at the fastest I can go or not.
