RE: Adding original slideshow photos to DVD-ROM option.

I want to be able to burn/save a slideshow .TS file or burn a slideshow DVD using iDVD and I want to be able to add original slideshow photos to the DVD-ROM using iDVD's "always add original slideshow photos to DVD-ROM". I also want to use Ken Burns pan/zoom effects which iDVD doesn't have as an option. I have been able to makeup my slideshow in iPhoto with Ken Burn effects and then send it to iDVD and retain the Ken Burn effects. However, when I do that, then I lose the ability of using iDVD's "always add original slideshow photos to DVD-ROM" option. Is there anyway to do/have both options retained in iDVD, Ken Burns effects and always add original slideshow photos to DVD-ROM using iDVD? If not, does any know if it is possible to do this using DVD Studio Pro?

Yes but all you lose is the "automatic/always" part,
you can add them yourself to the DVD ROM portion.
Under the "Advanced" menu in iDVD, you will see "Edit
DVD ROM Contents." Then create a new folder in the
window that opens, and you can drag photos from
albums (but not slideshows) into the DVD ROM
portion.

Saving photos to DVD ROM with iMovie

If I create a slide show with iDVD, I can set up an option (in preferences) to "always save slide show photos to DVD ROM". With this option selected, when I write a DVD, the photos are writen to a directory along with creation of VIDEO_TS files etc.
I like this option, since it gives me a way of storing the JPEG along with the same slide Show DVD. So at a later date if I want a single JPEG, I can get it from the same DVD as the slide show.
I want to use iMovie to create a slide show, since I want to put animated titles, various transitions between slides, and Ken Burns effect etc. But if I create an iMovie, is there a way to store the JPEG to the same DVD in a directory? I do not see any option, I am willing to take the iMovie to iDVD to get it done, even with this, I do not know how to save the JPEG to the same DVD-ROM.
Can some one help me with this.

there's no single-click option, but you have an option...
in iPhoto, create an album with your pics (we need that later in iM...)
"export"/share this album to a new folder on your harddrive (don't forget where...)
create your iM project, using that album
when finished, create new iDVD project, use your iM project...
when finished, in "expert" (<< english nomenclatura? the menu option between Project and Windows...) you can choose "dvd rom content"
in that dialog, choose your exported folder with pics to add it as pic.files ...
done.

Adding H.264 Files into DVD-ROM Folder

So here is the problem:
I have 10 hours of footage and I want it all on one DL-DVD that will only be used in Dell/IBM laptops with QT installed.
Here is where I am at:
I converted footage into 10 one hour H.264 files, and I plan to use DVDSP4 to create a DVD-ROM folder.
Here is the question:
Is there any way to create a menu that will allow me to create chapter markers to open each file when clicked? I read about DVD@ccess, but this does not seem the way to go for PC users. And if there is no way to do it, should I just use Toast and make a data DVD? (not sure if DVDSP4 will do this). Seems silly to make a Menu to Just tell everyone to go back to the DVD drive and look in the folder for the chapter files.

It's not the topic is inappropriate, it's just not a direct function of DVDSP and, as you might guess, folks like me have neither experience nor patience with PC applications. That it can be done at all without using something like HTML amazes me. Thanks for the heads up on this technique, Chris, hopefully the OP will research it on his own.

IMovie slideshow (Photo) to DVD quality issue

Hi Folks,
I'm hoping that someone out there can help me out with this one. So y brother recently had a 4 week tour across the US and he took a LOT of photos. I saw this as a good opportunity for me to have a good go at iMovie. So I offered to put together a DVD of some of his photos for him. After working my way through all these photos etc and putting a half decent (For a first attempt) slideshow I went to put it onto DVD. That was my first issue, I didn't realise that without iDVD that iMovie could not burn your slideshow to DVD. So to combat this I downloaded MiDVD from the app store and things seem to go well... right up until I played the DVD. The image quality of the photos has degraded on a huge scale! My brother used a rather nice expensive camera on his trip and when we looked at the images on my iMac (27 inch) the picture quality was amazing! and that goes for when we viewed them in the iMovie viewer. So what is with the poor image quality on the DVD?
I'm using the latest version of iMovie (10.0.4) on a 27" iMac running Mavericks.
If anyone is able to help me out with this one it would be greatly appreciated

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto (see this: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2423 ), iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:

Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast, for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!

Changing to Wide Screen, skews slideshow photos on DVD

I created my slideshow in iMovie, I then sent it to iDVD, where I created the theme pages in a widescreen format and burned to a DVD at 16:9 ratio. This skews the photo images. The theme pages look the way they should, but the photos in the slideshow are stretched horizontally making everyone look fat and squatty. What I’m wanting is to be able to play the DVD slideshow movie on a HD TV, keeping the Theme pages filling the widescreen, but also keeping the photo images in the slideshow in normal proportion. How can this be accomplished?

I want to prevent anyone from printing my photos. What do I need to do to prevent this?
Tell them they shouldn't print them, that the photos are your property, and you'll have to trust them not to violate that trust. And if you don't trust them don't work for/with them.
There are very few ways if any to really protect this kind of stuff. I'd put watermarks on the photos before making the slideshow. And since slideshows are 72 dpi, and good photos need much higher resolution for printing, don't worry about it so much.

When I am importing photos from DVD rom, iPhoto shows " not enough free space on the volume containing your iPhoto library", but i have over 200G free in hard drive? how do i fix it?

How much free space do you have on your hard drive? Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

DVD ROM Empty

I'm new to apple and idvd. I am making a dvd of some slideshows I made in iphoto, I have the box checked for "Always add original slideshow photos to DVD-ROM" in idvd preferences. I imported the slideshows into idvd, and checked out the dvd-rom file, and to my dismay it was empty, I was expecting and hoping to see that the pics of my slideshows would have automaticly showed up there. Did I do something wrong or will they show up after I burn the dvd?

They should be there. Go to Advanced/Edit DVD-ROM Contents... If not there add them. I don't use iPhoto so I'm not sure how you'll get them in... Sorry.

Adding images files to DVD-ROM

By adding image files to the dvd-rom when burning my slideshow and movie. Can the photos be put on a desktop for printing after burn is done?

Remove "Slideshows" from DVD-ROM

In Preferences I selected to have the images saved on the DVD-ROM. Now my slideshow is too big and I want to remove those images to free up space, but "Slideshows" is grayed out. Is there any way to remove them so they won't burn on the disk separately from the actual show? I am hoping I won't have to do the whole thing over after changing the option in Preferences.

I set up a test project and I, too, was unable to remove the "Slideshow" folder from DVD-ROM contents.
If you created your slideshow in iDVD, then to create a new iDVD slideshow project you would have to start from scratch. In my test project I was not able to drag the photos from DVD-ROM, or the slide show itself, to another iDVD project.
I never create my slideshows in iDVD, precisely because of the lack of flexibility and lack of editing options. For me it is much easier to create the slide show in iPhoto or iMovie, then export it to my desktop as a Full Quality Quicktime Movie, and drag that movie into the edge of the iDVD main menu window. It will import right in. That way if anything goes wrong, I can create a new iDVD project and drag the slideshow quicktime movie into the new project. I would still have to manually add any menu photos or menu music, but that's about it.

Including Photos on DVD

I've used iPhoto to create a slideshow will serve as the main content in iDVD. I would also like to have folder on this DVD that contains all the full resolution photos from the slideshow in a folder called something like PHOTOS (and possibly with subfolders) at the same level as VIDEO_TS or elsewhere if deemed necessary. This would allow anyone who has the DVD the ability to use the full resolution photos outside of the slideshow for printing, e-mailing, etc. Is this possible to set up and include content of this type before the DVD is burned in iDVD? Any assistance on this is genuinely appreciated. TIA

You need to add the photos as DVD-ROM file so that the viewer can download the photos when the disk is put into a computer. From iDVD Help:
+You can let viewers copy files directly from your DVD by adding the files to the DVD-ROM portion of the disc. These files are burned onto the DVD and are accessible when the disc is viewed on either a Windows PC or a Macintosh computer, but not a DVD player.+
+You can add any kind of file to the disc. For example, if your disc contains a slideshow, you can add the image files to the DVD-ROM portion of the disc so viewers can download them to their own computers and print them. You can also add a file containing your movie production notes and other “extras.”+
+To manually add files to the DVD-ROM part of your disc:+
+Choose Advanced > Edit DVD-ROM Contents.+
+The DVD-ROM Contents window opens.+
+Click Add Files, or click New Folder first if you want to create a folder to put the files in.+
+Browse to select your files or folders, then click Open to add them to the disc.+
+You can also drag files directly to the DVD-ROM Contents window. When you are done, just close the window.+
+When you add a file to the DVD-ROM portion of your disc, before you burn the disc the project contains just a reference to the location of the file on your hard disk, not the actual file. Is it possible to create a Photo Gallery DVD with downloadable content?

I am looking for a way to create a photo gallery, distribute it via DVD, and have the end user be able to download the photos from within the photo gallery. This would function exactly like the iPhoto web galleries, but would be distributed on DVD rather than posted to the web. Is this possible? I am looking for a way for a user to download the photos, in low res and high res, from within the DVD player.

My first suggestion is to use Apple's Pro apps (ie, DVDSP) if you plan to use this DVD commercially. You'll get far better results and you will also be able to meet nearly all of the above objectives.
If on the other hand you don't have the time to learn apple's pro apps which does have a large learning curve compared to the i-apps, and you are currently working with a shoestring budget, then you can meet at least some of these objectives within iDvd by adding your content to the Dvd rom section of the Dvd. The app that one uses to play the slideshow from this data section of the Dvd depends largely on the available apps on the host computer system having access to this data in terms of what software is available to play its content. Hope this makes sense but if not, just come on back. Good luck.

I need some drivers for my CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive

I have been going through the apple site for a few hours here and I would really like to speak to a human being about this. This is not hard. I have a Pismo PowerBook G3, which I purchased online, used. Wiped the HD when I got it, installed 10.2.8. Updated iTunes to version 6.0.5. I get an error message when I try to burn a CD, missing software or incompatible drive. The drive is an apple brand drive. I am not certain where to find the serial number on it, there are a lot of numbers on it, but it can be provided if someone will tell me where to look. It's not a hardware problem, I can watch DVDs and play CDs, just can't burn. The drive says "CD-RW/DVD-ROM" right on it, and my computer is able to recognize it as such in the system profiler. I am led to believe I am missing a driver(s) that will allow iTunes to burn CDs with the drive.
It'd be great if I could get this on a disc, but if I can just download it from somewhere (willing to pay for it/them!), as long as I can burn it to a disc or download it again if I install a larger HD, that's wonderful. Or, say, I could wait on downloading it until I HAVE upgraded the HD, which I will probably do in the coming year. This would not be as wonderful, but I'm willing to do it.
Please, can somebody help me?

If you can, I'd recommend upgrading to 10.4, as it usually recognizes any 3rd party CDRW/DVD or DVD burner, without the need for Patchburn.
You can check the xlr8yourmac website for reports from Pismo (and other PB) users who have added aftermarket CD/DVD burners to their Pismos, etc.
I too love the Pismo (have had and upgraded at least 10 over the years, some for me and some for family members). The expansion bay was a great idea back in the day. I've found that most if not all aftermarket notebook, a.k.a. "slim" burners fit in the expansion bay. And the Pismo, coupled with Tiger 10.4 (I find 10.4.7 to be outstanding and haven't updated beyond it), is highly usable still today, given that big hard disks and DVD burners and 54g wifi PCMCIA cards (Airport compatible, no drivers needed: e.g. the Motorola WN825G cardbus card) have plummeted in price from a couple years ago. Too bad that compatible RAM is still expensive, as are new Pismo batteries (new, they cost more than many Pismos on eBay!).
As to brands/models, I like the Sony-Nec Optiarc AW-G540A 8x DVD burner (recognized as Master, ID=0 right out of the box, very fast, fairly quiet, priced @ $50-60) because it just works; and the UJ-8xx series DVD burners from Panasonic, which are pretty reliable (and very cheap on ebay if they're older models), because you can swap the faceplate/bezel with the original bezel from the DVD-Rom in your Pismo (if it was a Panasonic model; Apple also used LG drives).

Missing DVD-ROM content

I am using a freshly built MacPro with 10.5.1 and iDVD 7.0.1
I have a 19 minute video from iMovie 6.0.4 ( I do not like iMovie '08).
My problem involves about 270 high resolution images in .jpg format want to include as 3 slide shows and as DVD-ROM content.
No matter how I try when I make the DVD (or now I make an image) from iDVD it fails to provide the DVD-ROM content correctly. In each case I MAY get a single image from each of the slideshows in the DVD-ROM/Slideshows subfolders.
I have also tried for each slide show to deselect the "Include images as DVD ROM content" and then add each folder using the "Edit DVD-ROM Content..." menu item and get very similar results. I've even added a simple readme.txt file that fails to get added to the DVD-ROM contents folder.
Each image is between 2 and 5 MB. According to the "Project Info..." window all file statuses are checked as fine and the total size of the DVD should be 1.93 GB.
Any ideas why iDVD is failing to add my desired images to the ROM content?
I also thought of changing the created .img file to a larger size and then Read/Write so I could then drag and drop in my own ROM content. However it appears Apple's Disk Utility does not resize UDF volumes. So if there is a suggestion on how to resize the UDF then send that along and I'll try that also.

This issue comes up from time to time and SO FAR, the issue has always been trying to exceed the total capacity of a DVD. I'm not sure the Project Window accurately includes the DVD-ROM size.
A 19 minute movie and menus could easily add up to 1.3GB; then you have to figure in the space for the slideshows so your 'normal' DVD contents could easily be 1.9GB (or more).
If you put all 270 high resolution images in one folder, what would the folder size be?

Slideshow on a DVD questions

2 questions about the adding a slideshow to a DVD using iDVD 08. Are you only able to allow one type of transition for the slideshow? I really would like to have an option where it randomly switches between types of transitions. Seeing the same transition for hundreds of photos is boring to me. Also, I chose the page turn transition to test out the slideshow on a DVD and it seems that right before it turns the page the picture goes blurry. Has anyone else noticed this? Please tell me there is a fix for this... and also a way to do multiple transitions on a finished DVD slideshow.

I have the same issue, and it happens with several different transition types (I tried dissolve, page turn, and cube and they all had the problem...) To me it looks like a glitch in the rendering process as it happens right before every transition starts, and the last picture of each slideshow (which has no subsequent transition) has no blur. Sadly, I have this problem with iDVD 6.0.3 and I was hoping that upgrading to iLife 08 might bring a fix.
I did notice, that the problem is most evident on my HD tv with a Panasonic DMR-EH75V DVD player. On my Macbook the problem is still unacceptably noticable, but not quite as bad. On a G3-powered slot loading iMac, the picture blur is nearly imperceptable. Finally on my old standard TV with a Samsung DVD-V1000 there is no hint of the blur problem.
It may be that changing settings on the DVD player can reduce or eliminate the blur, but for me that is not really an acceptable solution because I am creating a Wedding DVD for some clients and I have no idea what kind of hardware they will end up playing it back on.
