  • Repackaging Android Viewer App for BlackBerry PlayBook

    Hi,
Does anyone have tried this? If yes, then was repackaged Viewer working OK on the PlayBook? What tools/utilitiies were used for repackaging as there are few available:
    https://bdsc.webapps.blackberry.com/android/
    http://crackberry.com/how-install-android-market-and-other-applications-your-blackberry-pl aybook
"The BlackBerry PlayBook is a tablet like no other. The powerful QNX Real Time Operating System embedded within allows it run an entirely different operating system as another application on top of the standard PlayBook OS. This is how the PlayBook will run repackaged Android applications. For the most part, though, repackaged apps will appear to run just like regular PlayBook applications."
    Thank you,
    Gennady
Update: This compatibility test determines how compatible your app  is with the BlackBerry PlayBook OS:
    https://bdsc.webapps.blackberry.com/android/bpaa/apk-compatibility-check
And this is a result for Android Market Installer build with Sprint 19 Viewer Builder:
Your application is not compatible with the BlackBerry® Runtime for Android™ Apps.
Your application uses a feature which is incompatible with the current version of the BlackBerry® Runtime for Android™ Apps. We recommend that you download the BlackBerry® Plug-in for ADT to test your application and remove features as required.
    4. Severe incompatibilities found
    Impact     Type     Reason
    3     uses-permission     com.android.vending.BILLING
So if In-app Billing would be optional checkbox for Android app with the optional use of com.android.vending.BILLING in the code, then I guess it will be possible to repackage Viewer for PlayBook. And yes, Amazon Appsstore Installer is compatible with the BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps.

OS2 for the Playbook is still in beta at this point, should be released sometime next month.
So your problem is not that you can't find any apps, you just can't find the one(s) you're looking for.

  • Can I use my Android tablet charger for the PlayBook?

    Hello,
I got a PlayBook and it came with the wrong charger plug. It's for the US that I can't use here in Germany.
Can I use my Android tablet charger for the PlayBook instead?
The information on the chargers are similiar but for the output it's a bit different: (They both say 5V but than 1.8 instead of 1.5)
    PlayBook charger output: 5V = 1.8A
    Android tablet charger output: 5V = 1.5A
    Thanks for any feedback.

It'll charge slightly slower, but yes.

  • Android Apps on Playbook.

Does anyone know of any other sites apart from Goodereader to download Android Apps onto playbook?
i have had a look on web but can only see the Good e reader site.
    any ideas please.

There is http://playbookbars.com/ but from there I once picked up an illegal copy of a paid-for app and was told in no uncertain terms by the owner to unload it right away.  I would stick with your first choice. We tend not to go into too much detail on sideloading because of the implications of picking a bad one

  • Here's a tease from a RIM PM on the status of BB10 for the PlayBook

This is a table scrap of positive news from a RIM Project Manager that something is in the pipes for the PlayBook for sure...when it will arrive is the unknown factor though. The question was: "So hows BB 10 for the PlayBook coming?" The reply says: "My lips are sealed! Good things to come. John" (If you right click on the image below and select view image it will enlarge in the same window in FireFox - most likely IE or Chrome too.)
I mean, we've heard nothing for quite some time officially that BB 10 was coming to the PlayBook. So, to me at least, this states that something is indeed coming to the PlayBook and reinforces that fact. It doesn't say anything else obviously. But reassurance is comforting.

RIM has stated all along that BB10 would be coming to the PlayBook sometime AFTER the launch of the BB10 for the smartphone devices. They've not been silent on that, and John's is just the latest in confirmations.
Thanks, can't wait to have it on the PB!

  • Wifi for the playbook

I just bought my husband the playbook and we dont know how to get our phone to act as a wifi hotspot in order for us to use our phones for internet - we live in SA - help anyone??

    1. You can use the Bridge function on your BlackBerry handheld device to send a signal to your PlayBook.
    2. You can use the PlayBook > Options > Tether to your BlackBerry handheld device for a signal.
    or
    3. IF your handheld BlackBerry has the function of Mobile Hotspot, you can use that for the Playbook to connect via WiFi. I don't know what exact model of the Curve you have.
What is your exact model number of Curve?
And, What is your Operating System loaded to your device? Look at Options > Device > About, third line down beginning with a "v.7.0.x.xxx", What is yours?

  • Digital Editions for BlackBerry Playbook

    Hi,
I tried to download Adobe Digital Editions for my playbook. But I later leaned that it's not compatible with Playbook.
Can somebody please let me know other way to check out books from public digital library for playbook.

There are two possible issues.  One is whether the file is in .epub or .pdf format, the other is whether it has DRM (Digital Rights Management) applied to it.
It seems there are Blackberry apps for .epub files.
    http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/50823/?lang=en
http://forums.crackberry.com/playbook-apps-games-f243/best-epub-reader-726698/   talks about some.  I don't know if the name crackberry means they are for a cracked Blackberry only.
Both these threads talk about NON-DRM .epub files.
There are lots of non-drm .epub files for download: including almost all classics that are out of copyright (try project Gutenberg).
Most bought books and library books have DRM applied.
I haven't seen anything that says you can read DRM books on the Blackberry.
There are hints one might be coming.
    http://nerdberry.net/2012/10/23/adobe-drm-for-epub-now-supported-on-blackberry-playbook-ta blet-and-blackberry-10/
    http://www.berryreview.com/2012/10/23/devs-adobe-reader-mobile-sdk-for-epub-drm-now-availa ble-for-playbook-blackberry-10/
I would avoid converting to .pdf for reading if at all possible.
pdf format files don't flow to match your screen size and chosen font size, and are a pain for anything apart from their original application in printing.

  • Is JavaScript "enabled" in Adobe Reader for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Playbook, ... ?

I think it would be nice if Adobe Reader on mobile devices had JavaScript "enabled". I wonder, "does Adobe have any plans on 'enabling' JavaScript on mobile devices?". Thanks. - john

  • Can i use icloud on android for itune apps

Can i use icloud on android phone to use snapsave and other purchased apps from itunes?

No.  You can only sync iCloud contacts and calendar on an android phone using
SmoothSync for Cloud Contacts and SmoothSync for Cloud Calendars, as well as set up your iCloud email account on an android phone using these settings: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864.  You can't use iCloud to use apps purchased from iTunes as they only work on iOS devices.

  • No Direct support for BlackBerry PlayBook tablet - why not I just bought it?

I've just bought a playbook. It says it comes with complimentary technical support for 90 days form the date of purchase. I have attempted to register the device using the S/N number as required and I get the following:
Unfortunately, your BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet does not qualify for Complimentary Support. You can, however, get assistance using incident based support from Research In Motion.
    Why? grrrrrrrrrrrr

It should be. The complimentary support is just for help setting it up.
If you visit http://blackberry.com/support and follow the link for PlayBook you should get a phone number you can call, and RIM support will be able to help you.

  • After using Firefox/Android for a while, it just shows a black screen.

Asus TF701 tablet (with keyboard dock)
After navigating through several sites, Ffox-Android (v.34) displays only a black screen. When I look at the tab thumbnails, however, the sites seem to be rendered. But each time I select a thumbnail. the tab's full display is blacked out.
    Help!

    Hi ChuckSott
Some questions to help us help you!
    # Which websites are causing this problem? A few examples would be grand!
    # Does this problem occur in FF35 for Android?
    # If you could post a screenshot of the tab's full display being blacked out that would be super helpful
    # Have you tried temporarily uninstalling all the add-ons in Tools -> Add-ons? Sometimes add-ons break Firefox!
    # Finally what version of Android OS are you using? (ice cream sandwich 4.0, jellybean 4.1-4.3, kitkat 4.4? etc)

  • AIR app on Android for live chat crashes

No matter which streaming server I use, I regularly have a crash. My scenario is:
One side is on browser on PC, the other side is on android air app. Application is receiving a live stream and publishing a live stream at the same time, using two different Netstreams. Half of the time the application crashes. Crashes are rearly occuring during chat, but most of the time after a chat session is ended, and some time after netstreams are closed. There is no exceptions.
If I run the same AIR application on Windows Desktop, no problem occurs.
My application also records video and views recorded video. No problem occurs there. So, play("recorded.flv") and publish("someFLV", "record") has no problems.
When it comes to live streaming, problem occurs.
I use netstream.buffer = 0 for publishing live content, and netstream.buffer with its default value for playing live content.
When chat ends, I detach camera and microphone from netstream, remove eventlisteners from netstream, remove camera from Video object, set microphone and camera to null.
I tried closing and not closing netstreams, but nothing changed.
I tried sound only and video only streams on both sides, but nothing changed.
I compiled with AIR on Android 2.6 and 3.0, but nothing changed.
I tried compiling with Flash Builder Burrito and Flash Builder 4.5, but nothing changed.
I investigated Android adb logcats, but nothing useful is traced.
Application just crashes without any message or warning.
Is there a bug for playing and receiving live content at the same time on AIR on Android?

For those who are interested in this crash, I'll give a few more experiments and hope for an answer.
I investigated a few adb logcat deeper and noticed something about AIR runtime:
    1. The crash does not happen all time, but randomly. Followings will explain the reason.
    2. If I try sound-only streams, and if app crashes after disposing resources, logcat has messages related to Android microphone. After painful research, I found that logs mean: "someone requested microphone data, but it didn't consume microphone data fast enough."
    3. If I try video-only streams, and if app crashes after disposing resources, logcat has messages related to Android camera. After painful research, I found that logs mean: "someone requested camera data, but it didn't consume microphone data fast enough."
So, maybe, only maybe, because AIR doesn not support multi-threading, when we dispose a microphone or a netstream, AIR stops receiving microphone data immediately, but until our calling function ends its execution, AIR does not notify Android OS about dispose. So, in Android's point of view, it sends microphone data but nobody consumes that data, thus nobody empties Android's buffer. Hence Android OS thinks that something is wrong and kills AIR application. That may explain why we get crash randomly: If Android's microphone, or camera, buffer is nearly empty when we dispose, buffer is not get filled until we fully dispose resources and everything is fine. But if the buffer is nearly full when we call dispose, buffer gets filled to its maximum until we finish our disposing and Android OS suspects about buffer and AIR app is killed with a signal 11, a segmentation fault.
This is only a theory, and I found one evidence that supports the theory: Android developers are suggested not to use camera and microphone resources directly. Instead, they are advised to create another thread to consume camera and microphone and use that thread for their needs. That is impossible in AIR as AIR don't have multi-threading.
Well, is there anybody now who has an idea?
