Re: Apple AirPort drivers only support a WEP key index of 1

This article may be published at Apple's leisure.

Are you entering the WEP key in ascii (just a word) or hex pairs? If you were using ascii, try switching to hex pairs and see if that works (just click the menu in the password window and it should appear as something like "128 bit WEP hex"). I know you said the password is correct, but if using ascii, sometimes the keys don't match on the router and computer (or something like that), so the router thinks the password you gave is wrong. When this happens for me, it just cites "problems joining network" or something similar, rather than citing an incorrect password. Hex pairs bypass this problem.
Also make sure that you are using the same bit encryption as your router, so 64 or 128 bit WEP, when you enter it.

  • WEP Key index other that "1"

    Hi All:
I brought a new macbook, i have switch from Dell to MAC, im pretty happy so far, except for the following...
You can only setup Airport on to send and connect to wireless networks on WEP Key index 1, i have several customers that we i came into their locations, the main Wireless key index in other than 1. They use 2, 3 or 4. Unfortunatelly it seems to me and to rest of people i found on the new, apple only supports 1.
This as no sense to me, and i think there needs to be a workaround to fix this.
Can anyone tell me what we can do in order to connect to wireless networks that use other that WEP #1???
    Thanks and all the best!

Ok... I have a wifi here at home.... and probably in the modem settings there are 4 keys Just try one and put it on the password asked. And you shall get internet connection right away... Hope i helped you!!!

  • HNAP WEP Key Index

Does anybody know how to get the WEP key index from a router using HNAP? What method to call and what is the schema?

Haven't tried it, but if this driver supports your cards, then I hear it allows you to change the "key slot"...

  • WEP key index?

Hi, recently switched to a Macbook pro. The problem is that I can't connect with the wireless network in Mac OSX. When booted up in Windows XP on the same machine it works fine.
The problem seems to be the inability to select a WEP key index in Mac OSX? Am I the only one with this problem? Did i some how miss this setting? Please help!
    Thanks in advance.
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

If you can switch to WPA this will easily solve the issue and make your network secure.
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

  • Apple AirPort Express - not supported by BT Home H...

The mystery of the vanishing AirPort Express makes the above conclusion inevitable. I have two, old and new, solely for iTunes music distribution. Even when they do show on my wireless network, I get the famous AirPort Utility error 10057.
They do work from time to time, sometimes for long periods; then resetting the Home Hub usually brings them back (or not).
I'm so exasperated by the Home Hub that in the recycling bin it goes. I'll buy a proper wireless router.
Wake-up BT - Apple are bigger than you!

I thought I'd post an update on my odyssey to get an Apple AirPort Express working under Windows 7 for iTunes
The new ASUS dual band ADSL router is nice... though network setup was not entirely painless
More flexible firmware than the BT Home Hub is a real plus
Getting the AirPorts configured was not Apple-easy. The AirPort Utility does not like a thing called "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" - find your wireless adaptor Properties via Network and Sharing Center and uncheck the offending item. Beware, Windows 7 homegroups like it, so you may have to switch it on again later. Pro-tem, that should get your AirPort found by the utility.
This left me with working AirPorts which disappear from the network when not used - so you have to switch them off and on every time you want to use them.
The only solution I've come across (set Wireless Security to WPA2 Personal on AirPort and Router) hasn't worked...

  • HT4221 Is it a concern that a software company such as Apple wouldn't automatically support multiple sort keys for photo albums (such as filename, last modified, date taken, etc.)?!

Other than 3rd party apps, has anyone found a work-around for Apple's goofy album sort order limitation?

That's a comment in the file. It has no effect at all.

  • I have an old JVC video camera and wish to import videos however the driver only supports windows.

I have an old JVC digital camera and am trying to upload videos on to my Macbook pro. However the device is not recognised and the drivers only support windows.

I have an old JVC camera, i would like to transfer the video which is on mini DV cassette
It would help if you give us the exact model JVC camcorder you have.
That said, nearly all miniDV camcorders (including JVC miniDV cams) transfer video via Firewire (aka iLink or IEEE 1394), not USB.   And no drivers are required, at least not on a Mac.  If you have a more recent Mac that has a Thunderbolt port (no Firewire port), you can use an Apple Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter to connect your camcorder to your Mac (although you may also need a 4-pin to 9-pin FW cable).
Also, on miniDV camcorders that have both Firewire and USB connections, the USB connection is almost exclusively reserved for transferring still photos from the memory card in the camcorder, not video from the miniDV cassettes.

  • Airport won't connect with WEP active

I have a Netgear router (the one Sky issue that everyone seems to have) and my Mac Mini refuses to connect to it when I enable WEP security, even when I select 'Other' from the Airport menu and input the WEP key.
I have to turn off WEP to be able to go online on my Mac. Is there a way to fix this?

You might try resetting your connection settings using the steps listed in this message:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10695921&start=1
They're not guaranteed to solve the problem, but they'll only take a minute or so to try.

If there are any neighbors near enough to connect to your network, you could have trouble from them sharing your bandwidth or worse.

  • WEP with key index 3

In my organization the WIFI is set on key index 3. Is there anyway to connect the IPAD as I do not find any possibility to set the key index 3 on the WIFI settings?
    thanks

    The following article says:
Check the wireless security option of your Wi-Fi router:
If you are using WEP security and have multiple WEP keys on your Wi-Fi router, try configuring your Wi-Fi router to use only a single WEP key in key index 1.
Consider using WPA or WPA2 instead. WPA and WPA2 encryption protocols are newer, more effective security options for wireless networks than the older WEP protocol.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3237
Thus, it appears you may only be able to use key index 1

  • "Invalid WEP Key" Error on 7410 All-in-On Wireless Set Up

My 7410 has been connected wirelessly for over a year but I just installed a new router (Linksys N600) and can't get the wireless connection back up.  All other wireless devices are connecting to the new router.  Using WPA2-PSK[AES] security on router.  Using installation wizard on front panel of printer and it is locating network SSID fine.  But only allowing for WEP key and giving me error code every time it is entered.  Have tried to change length of key on router to 5 or 13 characters and also tried 10 HEX digits.  Have powered off/on the printer and restored to factory network settings.  No luck with anything.  The Cisco router I previously had installed was also an N router - no problems connecting the 7410 wirelessly but swapped it out because of too many lost connections.  Any advice?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

If your WEP key is all alphabet then it is not WEP, it is WPA or WPA2.  As discussed above, this printer will not accept WPA2.
Get into your router settings and change your wireless security type to WPA or WPA/WPA2 (you can keep the same passphrase).

I am tyrying to link our xbox and PC int oour wireless network.  I am using an apple airport express and it is asking for my WEP Key.  Where do I find it?

You should be able to setup WPA / WPA2 access, rather than WEP - which is old an less secure. (Unless your devices are too old for WPA??)
    Try this link: http://spotlight.getnetwise.org/wireless/wifitips/apple/apple-wpa.php
    **Edit
Airport does support the WEP protocol.

OK, as always I waited before downloading a new OS and I'm sure glad I did. On the APP store I sorted comments by most critical...and WHOA...what is Apple doing? No support for Logic 9, MS Office? Is Apple only trying to reach the iphone/iTouch crowd? HELP! I was going to buy a new Mac pro & two 27" monitors but until I see some real problem addressing by Apple...I'll keep what I have and see how everything pans out. If anyone has any comments to ally my fears, I welcome them. I've been a devoted Mac user since 1993. 7500; G4; G5; and my latest Mac Pro...Where do I go? Again...HELP!

    Hi there,
If you look through ALL the reviews, they are mainly good. I feel that Lion is an excellent upgrade, although not essential.
There have been some issues with MS Office, but right now, it is up to Microsoft to issue a Lion compatible update, which will come in time. Saying this, MS Office has been working fine on my mac, it seems to be an isolated issue.
Logic 9 seems like a strange issue. Again, an update looks to be coming soon, with Lion support.
I do not feel that apple only focusing on the iPhone and iPad user base. There are many features carried along, but the machine can still be used for pro tools and use just as well. It still is a fantastic, reliable, fast, easy to use OS, which I have had very few problems with. Some additions you may not use, but they don't get in the way. You will love the new Exposé, Mission Control, as it is great for pro users who have many windows open at once, and the new spaces. You may however, never use Launchpad, but you don't have to, just drag it away from the dock!
I really reccomend buying a mac with Lion, although if you are worried about bugs, wait a few months for the issues to be ironed out, and updates to be given. Because the update is so very cheap, I really think you can hardly go wrong. Try it out with your current mac, and if you like it, go ahead and buy your new ones.
Lion is fantastic, albeit maybe rushed.
    Any other queries, just ask,
    Nathan

  • Late 2013 15" rMBP Can not DL Windows drivers. Get this pop-up "This Mac only supports Windows 7. Do you want to continue?"

Whenver I try to DL the Windows drivers from Bootcamp Assistant, I get a pop up that says "This Mac only supports Windows 7. Do you want to continue?".  I click continue, but the download always fails stating "Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server." and the utility shuts down.  This has happened for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 iso's.
I've chatted with support online and they basically led me through the steps of resetting the SMC and PRAM, but this has not worked.
The odd thing is, Bootcamp assistant was able to download the drivers successfully the first couple of times, only to fail during the installation of Windows, with the infamous "Can not load boot configuration" error.  Ever since those first couple of times, I am unable to succesfully download the drivers.
    Frustrating...any ideas?

The first time I installed windows 7, I had no issues what so ever. Then I decided to installed windows 8.1. So I went ahead removed the windows 7 partition via BootCamp. When I tired to install windows 8.1, I ran into the exact same issue. I went ahead and tired to reinstall windows 7 and the issue persisted.
Would be nice to find a solution for this problem.

  • Why does apple only support mp4 videos?

It's not really a problem, i usually use my friends computers to convert my videos since mine is so slow.
But why does apple only support MP4 and MOV formats? Why not MPEG or DivX?
I know they cannot use WMV because it is a Microsoft format.
It's just sometimes when i convert videos, the audio becomes out of sync or iTunes complains it's not playable on my iPod.
I would just like to know why?
    Thanks for your time.

If Apple chooses to go with H.264 or MP4 or whatever else they want to support, maybe it would be real nice if iTunes could automatically convert to those formats. So if I dropped my universally standard (and supported by most DVD players) DivX video clip in the library, iTunes would convert and format the video to an iPod friendly format.
So, let me see if I understand this correctly. You want Apple to pirate proprietary codecs from DivX and build them into iTunes QT access. Tell me, does this mean that Apple is working as your agent and you will be the one spending time behind bars or paying the fines. Or, are you saying that Apple should act as an agent for DivX and charge you for a version of iTunes with legal codecs installed. How about Windows Media? Want to double the cost? What about Real? Or maybe Apple should have different versions of iTunes -- one for you and one for the guy who lives next door who uses old Indeo files?
I have tried several 3rd party converters and they all suck.
Perhaps you should be more selective in choosing a converter or invest in a commercial product which is supported by the people selling it.
