Re: Audio Input latency over 1 second sometimes.....

This is a BUG in a recent Logic update that I did unfortunately.
Logic Pro 9 on imac24" had been working flawlessly for many months in my studio.
Audio from my various synths is going into the iMac via a fader panel via spdiff. Also main synth (Korg Oasys) is also going midi in to the iMac.
After this recent update from Apple on fresh powerup and Logic started and a Yamaha piano grand selected on Logic and 12String Guitar selected on my Korg Oasys, the following happens.
When I press say the middle C on the Korg, right away the Yamaha plays the C.
Then after about 1 second delay, the Guitar sounds.
Then I quit Logic, then restart Logic and everything works fine till the next time I do a fresh powerup.
This is very silly to have to go through every single day......
Anyone have any ideas?
CPU load always show very low load always.....

I know that you said earlier that you're using spdif. I asked you for more information about this, because your iMac does not have a standard spdif jack. It does not have a standard toslink jack. Your Roland has a toslink jack, and you're using some kind of adapter or separate device to connect this to your iMac. If you have another device here, I am considering the possibility that it's somehow contributing to the problem.}{quote}
From apple.com, my iMac has:
"Audio line in/optical digital audio input (minijack)"
This is where the Roland Toslink output is plugged into. There is no separate adapter needed. The iMac is able to understand the standard Optical frames via the fibre optic cable. We need to move on from this connection as it works as designed.

I don't understand the scenario you're describing. Is the instrument generating the sound a Logic software instrument, or one of your hardware synths? What happens if you press a key on the Caps Lock keyboard, instead of pressing a key on your synth?
} {quote}
I apologize in advance if i am not patient enough and i appreciate all the help you guys are offering... but why would you ask about pressing a key on the Caps Lock keyboard? As explained earlier, in addition to generating music from its own sound engine, the Synth supplies the MIDI data straight into the iMac via USB. The iMac sees the synth Keystrokes in perfect realtime and plays whatever instrument I select in Logic...in perfect real time. Its the Analog being generated from the synth engine that gets delayed until I putz with perhaps the .plist file. (read Eriksimon's comment above). In my very first post I explained that I had selected a Yamaha Piano (a Logic Instrument) and a Steel Guitar (An instrument on the Synth) setup. So when I hit a middle C on the Synth, the Logic Instrument Yamaha AND the Synth Instrument Guitar should sound at the same time. But they don't...until I putz with the .plist file. Hope this clarifies the confusion?
Help me out here Eriksimon. You seem to get what i am faced with.

The Audio Outjack from the iMac is wired to the Audio Amp via an stereo cable with RCA connectors. There is no difference in sound if I use built-in iMac speakers.
I have not tried using a different account. Should I?

  • USB audio input to voice-over tool not working

with FCE-HD on iMac i have system preferences set to USB-122 Tascam box for audio input/output (works great with GB for instance) but when i try using it for audio input on FCE and the voice-over tool set to USB-122, i hear no audio, the level meter doesn't more, etc, its still taking the audio from the built-in mic.
im sure its something simple im overlooking??

  • Audio input is gone. What plug/adapter do I need to plug in a rode mic for fcpx voice overs? Any help will be much appreciated.

    Hi,
First time user.... Bare with me.
My old imac had an audio input and I could simply plug in my rode mic and perform voice overs etc.... Now the new imac has no audio input.
I gather I need an adapter, but am I really stuck buying the iRig Pro at $219? Will this even work for voice overs in FCPX or is there a much cheaper and cheerful option for this problem that apple could have avoided in the first place...
Any advice will be welcomed and appreciated.

    Thanks Very much A Brody!
None of the research I did came up with this option. Really appreciate it.

  • Audio input settings help

I am using a Canon XL-1, and recorded in 4 channel audio with the built in stereo mic on the camera, (channel 1 & 2, it is a stereo mic), and a wireless mic on the subject (channel 3). I know that FireWire can not support more than two audio tracks, but is there a way that I can tell FCE to capture from channel 3 & 4 instead of channels 1 & 2.
I can not find a place anywhere to change the audio input setting in the capture presets or easy setup presets.
Sorry I have to vent a little bit. Feel free to skip the next paragraph since it is irrelevant to the question.
So far I have not been impressed with the intuitiveness of this software. It seems like setting windows are spread out all over the place, sometimes even in different applications (QuickTime?). Also the user manual has all of these parts about standard practices, but very little useful information about the technical functions of the software. I am not afraid of Pro Software but I feel like am using Aldus Freehand again.

    The short answer is No.
FCE only allows capture of the first stereo pair.
You could try an analogue dub to another camera to grab the second stereo pair then import to FCE.
I do know that third party applications can do it. I can't recall the names.
Last time I fiddled with iMovie I could hear the four channels. As iMovie uses a muxed format I'm not sure if you can split the audio successfully. IMO, best to leave iMovie alone and capture and work in FCE.

  • Adjusting Midi Clock/All Midi for Input Latency

First of all - I want to say that I LOVE Logic 8. I feel like I am working really fast, and smoothly with the new interface.
I wanted to ask about adjusting external midi devices delay for input latency compensation.
I have been trying to line up Ultrabeat and TR-606 synced via MIDI clock and a Kenton DIN sync, and have been adjusting the MIDI clock delay and I can get VERY close. Usually -4ms is the magic number, but -5ms is too much, and puts the drum machine before the beat.
My question is, is there ANY way to make finer adjustments? How are other people dealing with syncing midi devices accurately without having to slice up audio after the fact?
I toyed aroung with record delay, and it did not seem to actually do anything.
I am running a Mac Pro Quad 2ghz with an Mbox 2 Pro. My buffer is set at 64 with I/O Safety Buffer on.

An I/O buffer size of 32 may be too low under certain conditions. You'll know if it's OK to leave at 32 if you run a session with lots of plugs and/or audio tracks and don't experience audio glitching.
On my system, and for the kind of work I do, I was able to get away with 32 until I decided to use GPO, and it simply won't function at 32. Needed to up the buffer to 64; my point is that sometimes a single type of plug will cause you to up your buffer size out of necessity.
But yeah, stick with the lowest size possible unless/until something forces you to increase it.
I think the amount of MIDI delay will depend on the specific interface you're using as well as the reaction time of specific pieces of gear you're using. But it's good to see that you've gotten a good result with your 32/-5 setting.

  • MacBook Pro (Retina) has S/PDIF Mini-TOSLINK? Audio Input? Boot as FireWire Drive?

I love all the Apple MacBooks and I fall in love with the new MacBook Pro (Retina) but then I review all the specs and I feel that some things are missing:
    It has S/PDIF Mini-TOSLINK? I use this a lot!
    It hast Audio Line-In input?
I only see output and somebody told me that the same port could do both, but what abaout using the MacBook with Guitar Rig? I need both, input and output!
Sometimes you need to boot the MacBook as FireWire target disk mode, the new MacBook doesn't have any FireWire port, you can plug a Thunderbolt to FireWire adaptor, It could work? how can I boot the mac as target disk mode?
The last thing that was missing is the optical drive but that is another story!
    Thanks for your answers!

well, like Point - counter point (for those old enough to remember it) let me give you my 0.02 cents worth
YES, it is SO worth it.  The big expense is the 512G flash SSD.  Besides being more shock resistant, not subject to fragmentation, its blankty blankaty FAST!  So many programs load twice as fast.  (I am running windows in Parallels, a huge diff. in start up speed).  Video editing SO much faster.   That is a huge part of the cost.  The rest is the lovely screen.  When I picked mine up yesterday (Tuesday) opened it in the apple store, put it next to the current 15" MBP and there is a noticeable improvement including less glare.
One feature that is not mentioned, while the screen is 2880 x 1800 you get 5 different display resolutions that all are very sharp.  For OLD eyes, you can go down to 1024 x 640 (OK, WAY TOO BIG) and when I am writing code, I want a lot of space, so bring it up to 1920 x 1200.  The default is in the middle.  Most other LCD screens have one "GOOD" resolution.  To me, this is a HUGE feature!
The speakers are MUCH better than the ones on my previos MBP. and the fan is MUCH quieter (I play Second Life a lot and that heats up the computer so the fans are always at max!)  Oh yea, the video card is noticably faster with Second Life.  I am getting twice the FPS.
I am very happy with the jacks.  Yes, if you need wired ethernet each day, it would be nice to have that built in, I guess ditto for video out, etc. but I dont mind buying the adapters when I need them (Yo Apple, I am waiting!).  Ditto with the external DVD Drive.  If I was living on an airplane and wanting to watch movies on each flight, thish would NOT be the laptop for me, but I figure I use a DVD maybe once every other month or so. (and since I have more than one mac, the remote DVD option works fine with me.  Worked fine for years with the mac air!)
Bottom line, this very expensive computer seems very polished to me.  If I was just not so impatient to wait 2-3 weeks to order one, I would have an extra 256G storage and 16G of ram!  But I guess I can settle for this "entry Level" machine

  • After effects crashing when changing audio input

    Hi all,
I've been trying to get my Steinberg (Yamaha) ur-28m external USB audio interface/soundcard to work with After Effects CS6 for a week now. The problem is that everytime I change the audio input in the AE preferences to the Steinberg asio drivers AE freezes for a few seconds and then crashes. Same thing happens in Premiere btw.
    I've tried everything possible:
    - updated Steinberg drivers to newest version
    - updated AE to latest version
    - trashed preferences
    - totally removed and installed master collection again
    - formatted hd and Reinstalled windows 7 and installed Master collection again.
    - tried all possibles buffer rates
    Problem still there...
I looked into the events log and it mentions ntdll.dll and makes afterfx.exe crash.
Bottom line is I can't work with sound now, which is really frustrating. In other programs (non Adobe) these drivers are rock solid.
Apparantly After effects (and in my case premiere also) doesn't like Steinberg. I saw this other thread about Steinberg in After Effects: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1063355.
Doesn't look like it's been solved.
    Main specs of my pc:
    Intel i7-2600
    16GB ram Corsair
    Nvidia gtx 560 ti
    Gigabyte Z68P-DS3 motherboard
    Seagate 1TB (7200rpm)
    Anybody some ideas? Thanks!!

Basically what I did was set it as the line out for sound from windows, so
all sounds will be routed through the UR22 (Will work with any program).
You can leave it set as is to have windows sounds play out of the computer
line/speaker out and go into the sound settings in Premiere and set the
audio playback device as the UR22 (Only Premiere plays out of UR22) but
that is where i had problems. I just set all audio playback in windows to
route to the UR22 (Line Out in windows) and left settings in Premiere alone
(In Playback settings leave audio device as Adobe Desktop Audio....Premiere
routes to windows output, which i set to UR22) and everything worked fine.
I am a video editor and spend 95% of my time in Premiere and  some time in
Audition and After Effects and it has worked great. The only issue I have
had with the UR22 is that every once in a while if i leave my system on
over night rendering and playback something the next morning any audio will
sound like it is playing back too slow (Pitch shifted lower). But all you
have to do is unplug the usb and plug it back in and all is well again.
    Hope this helps. Good luck.

  • Using MainStage/Logic live as effects/processor for multiple audio inputs in PA application

I have a Mackie Onyx desk with firewire and Mackie control surface that I use for recording. Could I use either Logic or MainStage in a live application with the Mackie as audio input/output but using Logic processor/fx inserts on each audio channel?
Effectively using the software to replicate digital mixing desk processing
I can use either my iMac or Macbook pro
Has anybody done this (I'm sure you have), good points/bad points "don't even think of it!" comments appreciated
    Thanks
    Tim
BTW, now using Mavericks OS but haven't updated my signature :-)

should work fine.  Hopefully your machine can handle low-latency (like a 128 setting in the audio prefs).  The lower the better, but you don't want to over-stress your machine, so experiment with those settings.

  • Is there a way to have some sort of stereo mix audio input for mac?

Is there a way to have some sort of stereo mix audio input for mac? also so i can have a voice over?

Actually, after scouring the web, I see that RogueAmoeba also has a free utility called LineIn which simply sends the audio in to the audio out and doesn't interfere with other programs like iTunes!
On the other hand, after downloading and trying it, there is a noticeable latency between what goes in and what comes out.
The latency is in the computer, not the software. Most of the latency is in the A/D and D/A conversion.
You need to connect the analog input to the analog output directly to get zero latency.

  • Audio Input to iMac G5

    All,
I want to connect a MiniDisc player to my iMac. I have about 20 MiniDiscs of spoken word audio (personal recordings of conversations from when I was younger) that I want to copy to my computer. I have a portable MiniDisc player that has an output to a standard 2.5mm audio outlet or I could use my stereo which would be a 2 cable RCA connection.
My first question is can I connect an audio input device to any of the USB ports. Secondly, does anyone have any recommendations on how best to accomplish this.
Thanks, I look forward to any helpful responses.
    Message was edited by: H2OEngineer

Just use a 2.5mm minijack to 3.5mm minijack cable to your iMac, H2OEngineer. You can use Garageband, or just about any recent mac Audio software, to record the input. There are various freeware and shareware options.
For spoken voice recording there is no need at all to use a USB audio interface. The line in input on the iMac G5 is more than adequate. If you want to go one step better then iMac G5's also support digital "toslink" style optical input through the line in port. So do many minidisc players.
The downside is that you will have to do your recording in real time. Unfortunately Sony didn't see fit to allow fast digital downloads from the minidisc to Macs (as allowed by some minidisc players directly over USB to PC's). I guess Sony found iPods a bit too threatening to their previous near monopoly at the time.
    Cheers

  • Audigy 2 NX - Audio dropout/latency probl

I'm experiencing audio droupout with my Audigy 2 NX. It is fairly sporadic - I lose audio for a split second between every 30 seconds to 3 or 4 minutes. I have changed the input/output buffer settings which helped a little but now I am experiencing pretty bad latency as a result (I use my PC for music). I've tried all the standard checks etc - got the updated drivers and such - even as far as a fresh install of Windows. The problem happens whether I am using a music application or just Media Player.
System I am running: Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M3438G Laptop
    2Ghz Pentium M processor
    Gb RAM
    2 x 60Gb SATA hard dri'ves
Not sure if this will make a difference but I also have a MIDI controller keyboard and a control surface hooked up via USB.
Basically I just need to find out if it is a problem with my sound card/setup or if there is an issue with my laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Muchos gracias in advance!

  • Crashing when I try to specify audio input

Hey all. My name is William.
I am having trouble with Premiere. I started using it a few days ago and it is working great; however, I now want to record a voice-over. I haven't recorded audio in Premiere before, so I searched the help database. It told me I would need to specify the audio input, which sounded reasonable to me, so I went into Settings -> Audio Hardware and selected "Built in input/Built-in output" and it had the spinning wheel of death for a few moments (I'm on a Mac) and then crashed. I had turned off my error dialog boxes before due to a previous problem with Photoshop frequently thinking it had crashed when in fact I had quit it, so I have no way to report the problem other than here.
I have also tried setting the option to "System default input/output" and it still crashes.

You can clear your preferences by holding down a modifer (I want to say shift-alt) when launching Premiere Pro or you can do this http://blogs.adobe.com/genesisproject/2009/11/having_weird_behavior_with_an.html
As for media cache - you'll find it in your preferences.
your system should run Premiere Pro fine, but it won't fly as you can probably imagine.  Let me know how you make out.

  • How can I get my audio input and output devices back? I have no sound and cannot see any of the devices in Audio MIDI Setup..??

Hi, I tried to set up a new output audio device on my mac that would have multiple outputs (iBox Twist speaker and my internal speaker) but when I went to click onto one of the iBox Twist (there were 2 options available: iBox Twist and iBox Twist Stereo), Audio MIDI Setup crashed and when I finally got that back open, I found that there were no audio input or output devices to be found. My sound is working, as when I turn on my iMac, the starting sound still plays, however the volume control in the menu bar is no longer a black colour, but grey and when I try to change the sound on my keyboard it does not change. This already happened to me once, and after 3 hours I managed to fix it very simply (switching off Mac, unplugging power cord, leaving for 15 seconds, plug power cord back in and switch Mac back on, holding Alt, Cmd, P and R keys until you hear the Starting Up sound twice) however this same technique that fixed it once before is not working this time and I am still stuck without sound. I have tried Repair Permissions, rebooting in Safe Mode, Hardware Test and checking for Software Updates. Has anyone else had this problem and managed to fix it?
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me!

In case anyone has had the same problem as me, I have just managed to fix this by doing the following:
    Switch off Mac
Switch back on in Safe Mode (Hit power button, then hold Shift key until a loading bar appears at the bottom of the screen).
    Switch off Mac again
Remove power cord and wait 15 seconds
Plug power cord back in and hold down the keys alt, cmd, p, r all at the same time until you hear Starting chime for a second time and hopefully your audio will back.

  • Audio Inputs no longer work after upgrade to 10.4.10

Anyone else having trouble with audio inputs after upgrading to 10.4.10? Here's my deal:
MacPro dual 2.66, 4GB RAM, running 10.4.10 as of this morning.
Upgraded to 10.4.10 today and the mic on my Plantronics USB headset quit working. 'Phones still work. Here's what I did:
    1. Tried multiple audio input devices. None work.
    2. Tried all USB ports, problem persists.
    3. Tried the 1/8" audio input, problem persists.
    4. Zapped PRAM, problem persists.
    5. Called AppleCare and they had me do an Archive and Install on the system software, which installed 10.4.7 and the problem went away. Then, at their suggestion, I let Software Update reinstall 10.4.10 and the problem came back.
    6. Rebooted the system from a 2nd internal drive running 10.4.9 and the problem went away.
Seems pretty clear to me that this issue is with the OS, yet Apple's support staff insists the problem is "with the data on my boot drive". Thing is, the data on the "problem" boot drive consists of exactly the same applications on the other drives, and only those applications. There ** is no ** data on the boot drive other than the OS and some applications. Yet the other drive I can boot from that runs 10.4.9 and doesn't cause audio input issues contains all sorts of junk.
So, to reiterate, I'm booting from a clean boot drive with nothing but OS 10.4.10 and some pro applications on it and the audio input won't work. I boot from into any other Mac OS on this drive or any other and all is well. Yet this problem is supposedly with my data?
Is anyone else out there seeing issues like this?

I used a UVC-compliant USB Logitech camera (the
    Fusion) driverless
    under OS X 10.4.9.
FWIW, none of these devices are actually driverless. They rely on drivers either supplied separately by some company (not necessarily the vendor of the product) or bundled into the OS. Usually, the bundled drivers are based on open standards like UVC mentioned in the link. Apple writes a lot of the bundled driver code itself but some of it comes from outside sources like LSI or Intel.
An unfortunate fact of life is that open standards are not always as well defined as they ideally should be. Another is that certain companies sometimes set their own standards that aren't quite compatible with open ones, sometimes to implement real or imagined improvements on an open standard, sometimes to gain a marketing advantage.
The good news is that the market usually -- eventually -- favors the open standard. The bad news is that it often takes some time for this to happen, leaving users -- particularly Mac users, who still represent a smaller market force than those using Windows -- without a solution for an uncomfortably long period of time.
Your best or only recourse for now may be to downgrade to 10.4.9 until this gets resolved, but you should also take into account that not all users are having these problems so it may be something other than the update itself that is causing the problem. I just video chatted with a colleague using an Intel Mac mini who is having no problems whatsoever -- we are both puzzled why he is unaffected while others are.
Sorry this couldn't be of more help.

  • Why doesn't my audio input work?

I have a Macbook with OS X and have never been able to get an external microphone to produce sound on the computer. I was using an old pair of headphones but the brand new pair I bought also do not produce any sound. They are the basic headphones with a mic attached and plug into the Macbook using two mini-plugs in the two audio ports (one for input, one for output). I can hear sounds in the headphones just fine. But I'm only able to talk if I use the internal microphone on the Macbook, which is inconvenient as it picks up too much background noise. I'd rather use the external mic.
When I got into my preferences > sound > input, there are two choices there:
    Internal microphone -- type: Built-In
Line In -- type: Audio Line-in Port
I select the second option and nothing works. Am I missing something here?

Well, FWIW, I did a lot of searching on here and it seems that this type of basic, unpowered mic will not work with my Macbook Pro (OS 10.7.5) and that any audio input has to be powered in some way -- a cd player for example that provides a powered signal into a pair of headphones or into the computer. I bought one of those very basic $15 headsets with microphone from Wal-Mart. Two different brands failed to produce any sound. (though the sound OUTPUT to the headphones works just fine)
Oddly enough, I did call Apple Tech Support and they were confused and unaware of why the headset' mic shouldn't work just fine. So apparently, this is not a "known" issue. So I'm just going to pay a little more and go buy a Bluetooth or USB headset.
