Re: BT Infinity - static IP address(es)
I've got a NAS drive at home that Id like to access outside of the home - plus a webcam that id also like to access outside of the home - would I need static IP for both of these applications?
If you look on the page below, there is some help and some other threads which will should help.

BT Infinity - static IP address(es)
Subject line says it all, really.
My local cabinet is going live with FTTC next month. Will I be able to get a static IP on an Infinity Option 2 connection - I currently have a block of four static IPs with my ISP - and would need at least three static IPs if I move provider.Agree with last comments - another issue BT needs to wake up to the real world on*.
Looks like moving to BT business broadband is expensive.
Plusnet offer dedicated IP addresses for a reasonable charge.
An alternative is to keep the router on and connected 24/7 - that's what we do.
Its in a difficult place to access and has always been easier to keep it on!
Also using our original ancient reliable router - might get a good antique price for it one day...
* Like the ex BE user we went with BT after Sky closed ukonline down.
ukonline advertised themselves as being professional - had many years of good service from them!
Went with BT because BT Wi-fi looked like it might be useful.
Despite the adverts - big mistake, BT needs to wakeup to the real world...
Only one place looks like it might be usable - a phone box in London marked 'BT Wifi here'.
Good, but never go there or seen it elsewhere!
Standing or sitting on a bench next to roadside green BT infinity cabinets - no signal! -
Can I assign Airport Express to static IP Address?
Current setup - Airport Extreme attached to cable modem with 2 hard drives, Airport Express as print server in separate room with USB printer attached (just changed from Linksys with sometimes working NetGear print server). Clients accessing the network: 2 Windows XP, 1 Windows 7, iPads, iPhones, iPods, Apple TV, and sometimes a Mac Book.
The issue is that we don't keep the printing system on at all times (light switch with Express and printer plugged in); We dont't do much printing, and I print to pdf most of the time. As a result, the Express IP address changes every time it's turned on, requiring me to change the port settings on the printer properties before anyone can print. Is there a way to assign a static IP address to the Express so that I don't become tech support every time someone else in the house needs to print something? Is there a way to assign a static IP address to the Express so that I don't become tech support every time someone else in the house needs to print something?
Yes. The first order of business is to find the AirPort ID for the AirPort Express. You do this by opening AirPort Utility and clicking once on the Express. In the area to the right, jot down the AirPort ID.
Still in AirPort Utility, now click on the AirPort Extreme and click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon
Click the DHCP tab below the Advanced icon
Look for the DHCP Reservations area and click on the + (plus) button at the bottom
Enter a description, for example AirPort Express
Click the MAC Address button and click Continue
Enter the AirPort ID in the MAC Address box
Assign the IP address you want the Express to use, for example 10.0.1.20
Click Done, then click Apply and the AirPort Extreme will restart
It would be a good idea to power cycle the entire network as follows:
Power everything down...all devices, order is not important
Power up the modem first, then AirPort Extreme, then Express, then devices -
Is an 'external' static IP address required to set up DNS
Hi there
I'm going to be setting up a OSX Server 10.3 machine as an open directory master, to take advantage of single sign-on capabilities.
From what I have read in manuals and in this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=977178&tstart=15 , it is necessary to configure the DNS service first. However, the topic talks about having an external IP address for the server, as well as for the internet router.
Is this the only method that will work? The network only has one external IP address as far as I am aware.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
MattThe answer is, it depends.
If you want your server to provide any external services then it will need an external IP address. Now, depending on your network, you may be able to use a single IP address on your router, having it NAT incoming connections via port forwarding - that's a common setup.
The bigger issue is whether you need a static IP address or can live with a dynamic one. A static IP address is required if you're running certain services such as DNS or Mail. Other services might be able to get by with a dynamic IP, depending on what you're doing with them (for example, it's OK to run a personal web site on a dynamic IP address, but you wouldn't want to do that for a corporate web site that gets a lot of traffic. -
How to Configure a Blackfin Static IP Address
I've read that the Blackfin lwip stack wants a DHCP server to assign it an IPaddress. I've proven that this works for me using a BF537 EZ-Kit.
Now I'd like to configure an application with a static IP address so I can use a crossover cable between a computer and the EZKIT.
I've seen a method to do this in the LWIP User Guide but this seems to apply only to projects built using Visual DSP. Is there a method to set a static IP address from LabVIEW Embedded? The LV "build specifications" properties dialog seems to indicate as such but it doesn't seem to work when I try it. If I disable DHCP my application doesn't work at all.Try these steps:
1) Disconnect your computer from your network.
2) Connect the crossover cable between your computer and the Blackfin EZ-Kit.
3) Assign a static IP address to your computer. If you don't know how to do this, follow the directions at the following Microsoft Website:
https://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/sag_tcpip_pro_manual...
If you don't know what numbers to fill in while following the directions, use the following settings for your computer.
IP Address: 10.0.0.1
Net Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.0.0.254
4) Start LabVIEW and open your project.
5) Configure LWIP to a static IP address. To do this, open the Build Spec dialog in LabVIEW and click on the TCP/IP tab. Enable lwIP and uncheck Use DHCP. Fill in a IP address.
If your computer is setup with the above settings, the following Build Spec Options can be used for LWIP:
IP Address: 10.0.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.0.0.254 -
How to Assign a Static IP address to VM created from VM template
Hello All,
I'm New to SCVMM, I have installed my SCVMM 2012 R2 in Lab environment and added 02 Hyper Servers on the same (One server is in domain & another one is in Perimeter Network). Once I added the Hyper-V's two Virtual
Network's has been detected in SCVMM.
Now I'm trying to create a new VM in each Hyper-V with a static IP address. I have created the VM template without connecting to any network, while creating the VM, below is my settings,
VMNetwork : VMPeri01 (Perimeter VM Network)
VM subnet : None
(Grayed out)
IP Address:
Clicked Static IP
IP Protocol version: IPV4 only
MAC address:
clicked Static (its showing 00:00:00:00:00:00)
Question: How can I assign the static IP to my New VM?
Note: I have created a static IP pool for the virtual network (w.r.t : http://www.virtualizationadmin.com/blogs/lowe/news/adding-an-ip-pool-to-vmm-2012-241.html)
Please help me to create the VM using Static IP (specific address now)While creating the VM choose the Virtual Network on the Hyper-V from the IP pool which you have created it wil take the IP during provisioning.

How do I connect an Airport Extreme to my ISP with a static IP address?
I have 5 static IP addresses from my ISP. The cable modem has five ethernet jacks. I run an ethernet cable from separate jacks on th cable modem to the devices listed next. I have one static IP address assigned to a Linksys wireless router for a MS network. Another is used by my VoIP router. I want to use a third static IP address for my Airport Extreme and set up a new network for a server running Leopard Server, iMacs, latptops. When I enter a static IP address in the Airport Extreme, I can't connect to the internet. Can anybody help?
When you configured your Airport Extreme with one of the five static (and public) IP addresses available to you - did you remember to also configure the Airport Extreme with your ISP's router (or "gateway") IP address as well as the IP address(es) of your ISP's domain name servers?

Set Static IP address on Mac clients
Hi,
I'm trying to change the IP address on a mac client at startup time to a different value and to be Static type. I need to do it via the command line. I've researched and found out that 'networksetup -setmanual ...' and 'ipconfig set en0 MANUAL ...' would do it, but the 'networksetup' command is not available unless I have ARD installed and 'ipconfig' is not recommended for use other than testing and debug.
Another option I was looking at is editing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist and then doing 'changeip ...' command.
Do you know if there are any other commands that will allow me to change an ip address via the command line, set it to Static/Manual and preferably do it without a reboot?
Thank youHi Sergey,
when I use static IP in my jwc_properties.ini it is never picked up, it still uses DHCP. The part where I have configured IP looks like this:
# Whether static configuration or DHCP server is used do get IP address. Possible values: dhcp, static
ip.method = static
# IP address, used with static IP configuration only
ip.addr = 10.143.144.97
# Network mask, used with static IP configuration only
ip.netmask = 255.255.252.0
# Network gateway, used with static IP configuration only
ip.gateway = 10.143.144.1
# DNS server, used with static IP configuration only
ip.dns =

How to set a static IP address for deskjet 6940dt
I have two HP laptops, both have WIN7, that keep losing the IP address for my 6940dt printer, each time power goes out to router. I have an desktop PC connected to a NetGear router and RCA modem connected to Comcast cable internet. I also have another desktop that connects wirelessly through the router....but this desktop never loses the printer IP address and I can't figure out why it doesn't and my laptops do.
I have had a fellow at the senior center computer club tell me that I need to set a Static IP address to make the laptops connect . I don't know how to do this and I would need someone to explain it in a language that I can understand, like real basic. I have searched the internet but the things I have found have been very complicated to understand.
Can anyone help me?

Printer working Scanner not working after changing to a static ip address
I have an HP 7500A wide format printer. I recently added a second router at my house to extend my wifi signal. After that, the printer kept dropping the network connection. So I set a static ip address of 192.168.1.250 for the printer. Now the network connection seems solid, but when I try to scan from the Scan3 software on my Mac, it says it cannot find the printer. I have a MacPro running OS X 7.5. Thanks for any help.
This question was solved.
View Solution.Hi @Carpenter47
I am sorry to hear the issue is not yet resolved. Let's try something different. I have a feeling the issue might be related to the static IP address. Please complete the following steps.
From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Right Arrow button () to display the second navigation screen.
Touch the Network icon.
Touch the Down Arrow () to select Restore Network Defaults, and then touch Yes to confirm that you want to restore the network defaults for the printer.
Return to the second navigation screen, and then touch the Down Arrow to select Wireless.
Touch the Down Arrow to select Wireless Radio, and then touch Off to turn off the wireless radio on the printer.
Return to the Wireless Radio menu item, and then touch On to turn the wireless radio back on.
Now put the printer back on the network using the steps below;
On the printer control panel, touch the Right Arrow (), and then touch Network.
Touch Wireless, touch Wireless Setup Wizard, and then touch OK.
Touch the name of your network.
If the list does not contain your network name, follow these steps to enter it manually:
Touch Enter New Network Name (SSID).
Enter your network name. Make sure that you type the uppercase (capital) and lowercase (small) letters exactly. Otherwise, the wireless connection will fail.
When you finish entering the new network name, touch Done, and then touch OK.
Touch Infrastructure, and then touch WEP encryption or WPA encryption.
If you do not want to use encryption (a security password), touch No, my network does not use encryption.
If prompted, enter the WEP or WPA key, touch Done, and then touch OK to confirm. The printer attempts to connect to the network.
- Source for these wireless troubleshooting steps: Wireless & network section of the 7500a support page
At this point, you should now be able to Browse devices in the Scan software and see the printer. I understand you created a static IP because of having a second router, but let's back peddle for a moment to see if we can get the scanning working again. Typically having a second router causes issues as the printer detects 2 access points and I guess you could say 'it gets confused, but we will see what happens with a automatic IP address and go from there.
Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.

How do I assign a static IP address?
I bought mSecure from mSeven Software for my iPhone. Had no problem assigning a static IP address to my old PC laptop, but now I've happily switched to Macbook Pro and I can't figure out how to get it done. Need this static IP address to sync my iPhone data to the Macbook Pro. Found something that said I needed to go to "server admin" but I can't figure that out either. I do see how to find my IP address (in system preferences), but I'm not sure how to assign a static address. I'm not the most computer literate person in the world, but I'm fairly teachable - can somebody walk me through this step by step (including what buttons to push to get where you guide me)? Much obliged.
Oh great, forum notifications have grown funky again.
As I understand your question, each client (whether it's a router or not) can be configured to receive its IP address via DHCP, or not. In the latter case you specify its IP address manually in the client. I can't think of a TCP/IP client that does not have this ability.
There is no way to use AirPort Utility to assign specified IP addresses to clients, though you can "reserve" a block of addresses that it will not assign via DHCP.
You can assign an IP address to a client using a directed IP packet, using Terminal (must be run as superuser):
arp -s <desired IP address> <client MAC address>
... but this does not create any entries in the AirPort's MAC address table. Is that what you want to do? -
My MacBook is not connecting to the host computer for the printer. The host computer has a static IP address which is different from the IP address that the laptop is looking for. How do I change the laptop so that it looks for the host computer's correct IP? The laptop is connected to the router. I know this because I can get on the internet with the laptop.
The host computer is Dell and the operating system is Windows 7. The printer is an Epson, and it is wired to the host computer with a USB cable. It does have host printing turned on.
The three have been working harmoniously for a long time. The router had to be reset; and after that, the MacBook documents would no longer print.
We created a new static IP address on the Dell but the MacBook is not recognizing it. We have researched the internet trying to figure out how to make the MacBook locate and recognize the correct IP address from the Dell so they can communicate with each other. The laptop is not communicating with the host computer because is is looking for the wrong IP. The host IP is 192.168.1.245 and the laptop is looking for 192.168.15.237.
I hope everything is clear. The person who originally set it up is no longer available to help me. Thank you for any help you may give me. -
DNS and Static IP Address Question on Solaris v10 X86
Ive recently installed Solaris v10 X86 and have two questions. The system is a Dell E521 with 4GB RAM and 1GB SysKonnect NIC, and internet is provided via a cable modem, thats plugged into a Netgear router, and the Solaris 10 box is plugged into the Netgear router via a CAT5 ethernet cable.
1. I can connect to my router login page using the following URL:
http://192.168.1.1/start.htm and I can also connect to various web pages such as yahoo, if I first "ping yahoo.com" (on another machine thats internet enabled) and then plug the web sites ip address into the Solaris/Mozilla browser. So it appears that I havent been successful at pointing the Solaris x86 at a DNS server to resolve the DNS name.
2. I've purchased a commercially available software package and it requires a static ip address for this Solaris x86 server. If the ip address changes, itll stop working by design and require that I reacquire the license file. When connecting through this Netgear router, how do I lock this Solaris v10 x86 server into a specific ip address? (the ip address floats presently when cycling my PCs on/off) presently, and assume the Solaris box will too, usually through an ip range of 192.168.1.<1 through 5>

The NIC is a SysKonnect 9821 1GB Ethernet card. The drivers in Solaris 10 were apparently very old and didn't install drivers or configure/plumb when I installed Solaris 10, so I downloaded the
latest drivers (hard to find!), followed the instructions and got the NIC drivers installed and then plumbed.
My router's ip address appears to be 192.168.1.1 and in one of the articles I've read, there is a recommendation to create a file (touch) within /etc named defaultrouter and enter the router's ip address. I did this, and the file now contains:
192.168.1.1
I also read where another file called resolv.conf needed to be pointed to a DNS server, which in this case, according to my Netgear router, and according to ipconfig/all on another WinBox on the same network, also shows the same 192.168.1.1 address for the DNS, so I created that file too (wasn't there) and it contains:
nameserver 192.168.1.1
There is a host name file called hostname.skge0 and it contains one line:
INTHOST
There is a hosts file, and it contains:
127.0.0.1 localhost loghost homex86
192.168.1.3 INTHOST
There is a netmasks file, and other than the commented out lines, it appears to contain one relevant line:
192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
There is a nsswitch.conf file and other than the commented out lines, it contains:

Finally, I've also seen some advice using the folling command (and I tried it):
"route add default 192.168.1.1" as an alternative method of setting up route table
The only other command I've tried is:
"ifconfig skge0 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up" but I suspect that was redundant as the plumb command I used to get the NIC functioning earlier probably already provided what was needed.
Finally, on this small network, I ran an ipconfig/all on a Windows based PC, to see what network settings were reported through the wireless connection, and this is an excerpt of that information:

5>One method is setting the router so that the server's MAC address is tied to a specific IP.
Otherwise you can edit /etc/hostname.<interface> and place a static address there, forgoing DHCP services from the router. You may want the address to appear outside the router's DHCP range.

Hyper-V Gen 2 Windows Server 2012 R2 VM cannot define static IP address
Hi,
I have setup a physical server with Windows Server 2012 R2. It has only the Hyper-V role installed. The physical server has two NICs that I have teamed with Hyper-V port as the load balancer. I have created 1 VM on this Hyper-V server that is a
Generation 2 VM running Windows Server 2012 R2. It has one NIC in the guest OS that is connected to the Hyper-V switch.
Now the Guest OS works fine and network connectivity is great when using DHCP but when I configure a static IP address in the Guest OS all network connectivity is lost even with correct IP configuration. Is this something to do with a Gen 2 VM?
A little more background - We have another Hyper-V server running Windows Server 2012 R2 with the same NIC teaming in the Host OS, on this Hyper-V there is a GEN 1 Windows Server 2012 R2 that has a static IP configured which is working normally.
Any help is appreciated.I have resolved the issue. It appeared the hard IP phones were using the same IP range that I was attempting to use so of course the VM could not use the IP Address. Silly mistake.
Elliot, I suggest you mark as Helpful and Answer any responses above that were helpful to you in getting this issue resolved. This is how the forums work.
For example, if a response mentioned "VM generation has no effect on the vNIC." and that pointed you in the direction of troubleshooting networking instead of wasting your time looking into VM generations, that may be considered "Helpful"
If a response mentioned "Make sure you're using valid IPv4 settings" and indeed you ended up having invalid IP settings such as a duplicate IP, this may be considered "Answer"

Why can't I use wifi on my time capsule after putting in a static ip address
We were assigned a static ip address, but when I enter it in the time capsule, wifi stops working. What's going on?
So do any computers get internet now?
Where have you put the static IP.. ? Please post a few screenshots. If this is your public IP just xxx out the last few digits.
Is the DNS and gateway actually correct and working?
Is this a fibre service? You still haven't answered the fundamentals..
The TC will have issues with any setup where the gateway address (what Apple call router) and the IP address are not in the correct subnet. This is a problem that often happens with fibre. Other OS like your computers are not affected, so when plugged in directly work fine.. but the TC is strict.. it must have the network correct or won't work.
