Re-Building Library Failure/Firmware Problem on X

Hello,
I am experiencing a serious problem with a Zen Xtra 60gb. Last night when my brother booted up his player it went straight into 're-building library', not a completely uncommon experience, I know. However, this prcess failed to complete and stuck around /3 of the way through before moving to a 'Firmware Problem' screen.
Having searched through various forums I tried a few tricks:
Firstly, of course, I reset the player with a pin.
I booted into recovery mode and tried a 'Clean-Up'. This strangely cleaned 400% of the player before completing.
I also tried removing the OS and replacing it again. It is the latest firmware version.
None of these things solved the problem.
Therefore I would be very much grateful for your advice as to solve the problem, hopefully without losing the data. If at all possible, I would much appreciate someone sending an earlier version of the firmware to see if that works (currently using .20.08 ).
Windows XP currently detects the player, but presumably none of my software will work without the Firmware installed, but if someone could maybe point a way to back up the data on the player in a current state, we'd be extremely grateful (yes, I know he should have done that already).
Of course I'll ring Customer Support first thing tomorrow, but I'd love to get this solved quickly for my little bro as he's spent quite a lot of time getting everything he wants on the player and makign playlists.
That was one long message, but I wanted all bases covered. Thanks in advance...

See "firmware problem" in the FAQ post.
If you've tried everything there and still get the error then the player is faulty and needs to be replaced. Contact Creative via the Support > Contact Customer Support link on this page.

• Frozen on re-building library, plus connection problems (Zen Mic

Yes, I read the FAQ :smileytongue: I JUST got my new Zen Micro and started putting songs on it. It started giving me trouble with the connection, but was ok for a little bit. After awhile I couldn't get a connection at all. My computer says there's no problem with the USB connection.
Also, it's stuck on the "re-building library" screen. I did the clean-up and reboot, but it still gets stuck there and I left it on for hours. According the the FAQ, it says ["Next you should try reloading the firmware/OS, but beware if you are having connection problems also with your PC you may end up with a player that has no firmware and cannot be reloaded."] But I'm having a connection problem, so I shouldn't do this?
Ahh...someone help! I just got it and I haven't even been able to use it yet! This was after waiting a week for it to be deli'vered.

Connection problems can be caused by numerous factors unfortunately.
The best test if you're able to do it is check on another PC. To see if the problem is with your player/cable or the PC.
There's a lot more advice here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net.

• Zen Touch is stuck in "re-building library" m

<FONT face="Comic Sans MS" color=#3333cc size=4>I have never had any problems besides this and I have owned my zen touch since Nov. 2004 but I also never updated any firmware or anything and now I can't because it won't power on unless it is plugged into a wall outlet, it doesn't power on by itself or through my computer. It just keeps going to "re-building library". It is not re-building anything because the bar only moves about /8 of the way and just stays right there. I just changed my battery thinking it was that but it is still stuck. I also did a "clean up" and rebooted and it didn't help either. Anyone have this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated because I can't update any firmware if it doesn't power on to get connected to my computer. TIA,

Tia, I also got my MP3 player around the same time as you and have been having similar problems. Mine was trying to rebuild the library for awhile but after a few tries of that it just completley turned off altogether. Now it tells me their is a hardware problem. Anyone have any suggestions as to what to try next?!

• Nothing after "Firmware Problem&qu

Hi there, Ima noob, and I just recieved a second hand Zen touch and thought it was great for the first day. I started by downloading the drivers, no problem, cool now I can manipulate things. Next I downloaded an application, still no problem. I syncronized the player and the computer to try to save some of the music before I started to add and delete. Did not work right, but no worries, most of the music was not of my taste. Anyway here is the deal, I downloaded some mp3's from a file to the player and the computer said it was done. Now it is locked up and after a reset it says "re-building library" and then goes to the "firmware problem" and there is nothing after that. Neither of my computers will recognize the player and nothing seems to work. Can I retrieve this at all, or is it now a 2 day old paperweight?ThanksSteve

Well, see, now that was the problem. I could not understand how to do that. I had clicked on a link and it said to hold the power button while re-installing the battery. So I did and got no where. I may not be the sharpest hook in the tackle box, but Im not completely out of it either. Well long story short, and long searches, and many differing tries, I finally found the detail that I had missed earlier and got to the recovery screen(even that didnt work immediately). It all is working normally (as normal as it sounds like?that they can)?ThanksSteve?

• Re-building library prob

My zen micro has been acting up. First, it wouldn't turn off and all the keys were not functioning. So, I took the battery out and put it back in. It said it was 'rebuilding library' but it stopped half way through and said 'Firmware Problem'. Can someone help fix this?

Access the recovery mode of Zen micro (KB -SID6584)?and try cleanup option under the 4 given option. If it still doesn't fix the problem, do a firmware upgrade for ur player. Go to support/download link and select ur player's firmware to download. ?

• Re-building Library Fail. Help!!!

My Zen touch 20gb crashed last night when uploading tracks and it froze, so I pushed the reset button. It then reported a firmware problem, so i went through the nomad stages of reseting, cleanup, and reloading the os. All seemed fine until I tried reseting the player to get it to work. Everytime I switch it on now it says 'rebuilding the library,' the bar fills but freezes towards completion. I then can't switch it off, and if I reset, I'm so far having no luck getting into Recovery Mode. I have backups of all the music, the player is relati'vely new, so I don't mind formating it. Is there any way to do this without going into the menu? And does anyone have any alternati'ves/suggestions? Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Tomob

i don't think that it would be the firmware if it is a HDD problem, but when my computer HDD died it made a ton of noises, deleted files, and moved files around. Try using recovery mode. But as a last resort you could always try the "caveman method" (banging it on a hard surface)that seemed to help some people.

• Jukebox 3 - firmware problem even after reinstalling firmw

Somebody please help! My Jukebox 3 tried to rebuild the library when I switched it on recently, which it has done many times before with no problems, but this time it got part of the way through and just froze. It then eventually came up with "firmware problem". I did a disk clean up but this made no difference. I managed to reinstall the firmware and reset the machine but it still goes into rebuilding the library and still freezes, and then tells me "firmware problem" again. I have reinstalled the firmware twice and this is still happening.
Can anyone help?!

No I haven't tried formatting yet - was hoping I wouldn't have to resort to this as I'll have to reload all the files again but maybe it's my only option?
Thanks for the suggestion.

• Please Help "Firmware Problem" w/ Zen X

I have a 60GB Zen xtra, I was downloading music when I got the battery low message. I shut the player down and didn't recharge until the next day. When I plugged it in the player started re-loading the library then it stopped and I got the message "Firmware Problem" Iwas unable to use the player. I tried turning the player off but was unable to do so until I unplugged and removed the battery. I reinstalled the battery and got the same results, "reloading library" and then "Firmware Problem." I recharged the battery and still same results. I can't access anything. This is the second player I've had with problems. What do I need to do so that I can use the player?

Try reloading the firmware or at worst reformat the player. More here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net.

• Player freezes at the re-building library scr

hello,
i've just got my new v plus. but while i was transferring music files everthing froze, so i plugged out my v plus and reset it. now when i turn it on there is "re-building library" screen comes up and never goes. this is the first day and i can't even add media into it. please help me !!

See the Recovery Mode sticky at the top of the forum.
Try ' Clean Up'.
If that doesn't work, try reloadng the firmware (which you can get from the Support link in the abnner at the top of the page).
If that doesn't work, try 'Format' which will erase *ALL* content from the player.

• Zen Micro "Firmware Problem&qu

Okay guys, I need your help. I have a 4 GBsilver Zen Micro (not photo). This is my second one. The original one had headphone jack issues. So I've had this unit for about 0 months. Now, yesterday I was listening to the Talking Heads when it froze up. I didn't drop it, it just froze. So I took the battery out and put it back in. It said Rebuilding Library. Okay, fine,. this has happened before. But, then the status bar froze up about 3/4 the way to the end. Then about 3 minutes later, the screen says "Firmware Problem." What should I do? Should I reinstall the firmware? Where do i get it from?

Thanks for the reply, but that firmware download doesn't work for me. As I said in my original post, my player is not recognized as being connected when it is. It is not my computer because Jukebox opens up when it detects the device and it is listed among my removable hardware.
I've downloaded the software, but nothing happens after the "select your language" prompt. It just says "Your player is not connected please connect your player" with a grayed out 'Upgrade' button and a darkened 'Close' button. I've tried unplugging and reconnecting the USB, but it still doesn't recognize that it's there.
Anyone else have an idea?Message Edited by lizzievee on 02-04-2007:29 AM

• Unable to exit Recovery Mode/Firmware Problem/Portable Device not detec

Well. A veritable catalogue of errors, to be fair.
In attempting to solve my truncated WMA file issue of yesterday, I decided to install the upgrade to MTP Firmware 2.00.2. It crashed during the transfer, but since my Micro's music library was wiped in the process (as promised), I concluded that the installation had, in fact, been successful.
However, WMP0 suddenly couldn't detect the Micro. No matter what I did. Ah, I thought, the Firmware installation didn't work after all. So, following the advice on this forum, I entered Recovery Mode and attempted to delete/reload the new Firmware via the recovery menu.
'Deleting Firmware', declared a little pop-up, chirpily. Then 'Update Firmware Now'. I tried re-running the Firmware update installer, but the Micro was still not detected. So I tried a reboot via the recovery menu, only to receive a 'Firmware Problem' message. I knew that. <EM>That's</EM> why I was trying to re-load the firmware. But how can I when the Micro isn't detected, and. . . . Vicious circle.
Please help. I have my Micro boxed and ready to send back to Amazon, but if there's a walk-through solution anyone can give me, I'd rather not return this little begger (I've become rather attached to it).
Regards, and thanks in advance.

Just spoken to Noel on the UK Support helpline, and he suggested restoring <EM>my PC</EM> back to yesterday's config in order to get it to recognise the Micro as a portable device. Only then will I be able to re-load the new firmware, and (hopefully) reboot the Micro successfully. Not entirely sure whether this will help, and seems to me to be a case of the tail wagging the dog.Anyway, I'll give it a try tonight and update this thread with the result.JP

• Updated firmware problems

I recently upgraded my G4's firmware. I probably did something wrong. I have 2 HDs on my computer. One has Mac OSX 10.2.8 and Mac OS 9.2.2 (20GB), the other has Mac OS 9.2.2 (4GB). When I boot from the 20GB drive I have no problems. When I boot from the second drive (4GB) I get a message stating that the build in memory has problems. But the computer boots anyway and everything is fine.
It's just that message that scares me. Should I try to change the firmware again?
Thank you.
G4 (old one with the plastic front, not the metal doors)
1 processor, 768 MB RAM

You know, you seem like just the guy to ask a related firmware problem. My computer DOES look exactly like your icon. I have spent a long evening attempting to fix what struck me initially as a simple problem. I now realize I must turn to the community for help, god knows "Help" did not... here is the story:
My girlfriend and I just purchased a new ibook and when I turned it on a prompt told me that I could attach my aforementioned tower using target mode to transfer all relevant data to the new computer. When i did this the computer recognized that something was there but could not get any info because there was "no OS X installed", or some other melarchy.
So I found out that the reason it couldn't find the computer correctly was outdated firmware, i went to update this firmware and I discovered that I needed OS 9 to install it. I don't have OS 9 on this computer.
I found an old OS 9 install disk from another G4 and I successfully restarted my mac from the OS 9 disk but when i went to install the program it said that I had to preform a "clean install". This frightened me and I could go no further than that.
If you help me I will be forever grateful.
thanks,

• Zen Micro "Firmware Problem" - One solution and what to do BEFORE it happ

My Zen Micro 6GB recently croaked with the dreaded "firmware problem" message. After a call to support, I was told to send it in, however I was later able to connect to the unit and download new firmware.
Here's what happened:
In the middle of a playlist, the unit froze, displaying "firmware problem."
- I took the battery out and powered up in recovery mode, then tried both reboot and reforomat. No luck; Still got "firmware problem."
- I downloaded firmware updates, thn connected the unit to my laptop, which does not have MTP media explorer installed. The laptop does have Yahoo Music Engine and Windows Media 0, both of which are used regularly to copy music to device.
- The computer recognized the Zen Micro, but the firmware update did not run, saying it could not connect to the device.
- Retried several times, after reformatting, etc.
Now, here's what seemed to fix it
- Let the battery drain completely while in the unit
- Connected the Zen Micro to a computer with the MTP media explorer already installed. This is a system that is also used to regularly download music to the device.
- Allowed the battery to charge for an hour
- Started MTP media explorer, noticed that device went into "Recovery Mode"
- Ran the firmware upgrade and it installed.
This is conjecture, but it seems that the MTP media explorer must be running to launch the firmware upgrade, but you can't install MTP without a valid device connected. I don't know why this is - maybe some kind of copy protection scheme. I only had it installed on one of my computers because it seemed unnecessary and I hate loading software that I'm not going to actually use.
This is what worked for me. Hope it works for you.
I'm still really disappointed with Creative's warranty terms, lack of phone support past 60 days and failure of tech support to recognize the problem and offer a solution, but my unit is working again and I didn't have to send it back!

By "MTP media explorer", do you mean the MTP/PlaysForSure version of Zen Micro Media Explorer? The earlier versions say "(for MTP devices)"; the latest ones say "(for PlaysForSure devices)". Or do you mean the Microsoft "MTP icon" in My Computer, which should appear on all MTP-capable systems (including your laptop)?
I don't really think it's a DRM or copy protection issue; I think the "firmware problem" is wiping out the hardware code the firmware installer uses to confirm that the device is indeed a Micro instead of, say, an iRi'ver. I suspect ZMME is one of the alternate means it uses to confirm that a Micro is connected. (An issue for further testing is whether ZMME should be launched or just installed.) Firmware fails on all kinds of devices; I suspect this is just a peculiarity of Creative's MTP/Janus firmware installer.
This is likely to be a significant issue for the FAQs and/or Creative knowledge base. With a growing number of MTP/Janus players in the Creative lineup (Sleek, MicroPhoto, and shortly Touch & Xtra), it probably won't be just a Micro issue in the future.
Edit: I just read the other thread, and they seem to solve it by going to a system without Creative software and installing the ..0 firmware. So there seems to be two solutions for now:
If you don't have any Creative software installed, reload firmware and run the ..0 upgrade. (If you need 2.x firmware, then install the Creative jukebox driver and run the 2.20.05 upgrade; you can uninstall the driver afterwards. Sorry, but some of us need 2.x firmware.)</LI>
If you have the 2.x ZMME installed, open it, then reload firmware and run the 2.20.05 upgrade.</LI>

• Zen micro 're-building library' er

I was listening to my zen micro one day in the travel dock, I went to skip a song, and it froze. Then re-building library popped up and hasn't stopped since! I've taken the battery out, and have tried hooking it up to the computer, and nothing has worked. Has this happened to anyone? If so, how do you fix it's

Same thing here....
I'll include some details in case anyone in Creative is interested:
Bought a TravelDock about 5 months ago. Since then used it at the office with my Zen Micro in it. At the end of the day I would turn off the whole thing, unplug it from the wall and leave it (with Zen Micro still in) put away until the next day. Whenever I travelled I would take the Zen out of the TravelDock and bring it with me to use with earphones.
After about 3 months my Zen Micro would not power off when I pressed and held the TravelDock's remote as instructed in the manual. The message "Shutting down..." would appear but the display never turned off. I had to take the battery out and replace it for the unit to turn off and rebuild the library. After that it would work fine...but when it came time to turn the TravelDock off I would get the "Shutting down..." deal most of the time. So I've been having to pull the battery out and back in again on most days after using my Zen Micro in the TravelDock.
One day (3 days ago) I brought the Zen+TravelDock home with me to sync some songs I had on my home PC so I could take them with me cause I was going to travel the next day. Synced fine. Unplugged it from the PC and put my headphones in to listen to some music while I was preparing for my trip. When I slid the power I just got "HARDWARE PROBLEM" and haven't been able to access any functions on my Zen since...
If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.
Regards,
Pavel G.
