Re burning a cd or dvd on optical drive

trying to backup photos and files . have tried a cd-rw and a dvd-rw. the drive erased the contents fine but then will not show the blank disc. when try to burn a pop up says: you will need a disc with X amount of free space
when try to open disc in finder a window pops up with:
the disc could not be used because the disc drive is not supported.
have used this drive to burn copies just a week ago on the same medium
any advice would be helpful
thanks
macbook

In theory all the below:
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
should be working fine, however i have come across threads where people had similar problems.

Just try another make of disc and see whether that helps.

  • DVD/CD optical drive is recognized only occasionally and temporarily

Hi, I recently bought an ASUS Essentio desktop model CG8350 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. My DVD/CD optical drive is not consistently being recognized. I've made few changes to the computer and have even tried reinstalling Windows (system recovery, factory settings), but no luck. The curious thing is that after booting up I can occasionally temporarily see the D:\ optical drive listed under My Computer or under Device Manager, but after a few seconds or about a minute after restarting or trying to read a disk, this disappears and the optical drive is no longer shown. I would take it back to Best Buy I bought it for repair, but unfortunately that was in the U.S. and I've since moved to Canada. It's frustrating that Best Buy Canada won't honor service warranties for items bought from Best Buy U.S. If there's something I can try in order to avoid shipping it off to ASUS or back to Best Buy U.S. (at my expense, and potential loss of PC for a few weeks), I would much prefer that. These are the things I have tried so far: 1) opening it up and checking/re-plugging the power cable to the optical drive and the data cable between the optical drive and motherboard. All cables seemed fine. The drive ejects and spins a little bit when a disk is inserted, but neither a blank CD/DVD nor a commercial CD are recognised after insertion. 2) looking at the registry to try the "delete UpperFilters" and "delete LowerFilters" trick that I've seen posted several times. Since the computer had Windows 7 from the start (was not upgraded), these entries were not visible under the suggested registry subkey. 3) under boot options, I've selected "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement" and have booted up. The optical drive showed up under My Computer and/or Device Manager for a few seconds or a minute, but then vanished. 4) disabled integrity checks: I've pasted "bcdedit /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS" into the Run window. After restarting, the optical drive is again occasionally visible, but only for a short period after which it disappears. 5) following a tip on one website, I tried shutting off and unplugging the data cable between optical drive & motherboard, restarting the computer so Windows could "see" there was actually no optical drive connected, then shutting off and connecting the data cable again and restarting. no luck. 6) I've run the Microsoft Support Fixit executable under "Your CD or DVD drive can't read or write media". The first time I ran this, it ran for about 5-10 minutes, but didn't diagnose a problem. The second time I tried to run it (after the Windows 7 re-install), is said my CD/DVD drive was not detected, so didn't run. 7) I've tried built-in Windows diagnostics and ASUS diagnostics, but they didn't help much. 8) I've updated ny BIOS to the most recent version. I've now run out of ideas and can't find any other suggestions on previous troubleshooting searches. The observation of the drive occasionally being seen for a few seconds/minute after start-up before disappearing seems like it might be a good clue, but I'm not sure how to interpret this. I did get it to play an audio CD a couple hours ago, but after trying to use my drive for something else after that, it's right back into the situation of not being consistently recognized, except sometimes immediately after booting up and then only for a short period. Any help or suggestions you have will be very very welcome -- thank you.

Honestly since it was recalled due to the sandy bridge recall anyways, it is going to have to go to asus eventually so I would just have them fix both in one shot. The Canada and U.S. support number is the same and I'm sure they could fix both issues at once to save you time: 1-866-625-9873

  • Mini dvd into optical drive

I have put a mini dvd into optical drive, what should I do to get it out?

If your computer has a tray-loading drive, eject it normally.
If it has a slot-loading drive, tilt the computer so that the drive faces downward, or try using a business card to grab hold of it.

  • Best optical media (cd/dvd) for optical drive, iMac 21.5

I had my optical drive replaced 2 weeks ago. I had bought 3 different cd/dvd media OEMs. The imac will recognize some but others fails. Apple refuses to publish or share a list of media that will always work with their optical drive. One tech guy told me to buy only +r/+rw format. Ha, thats hard to find and much more expensive. So what is best cd/dvd -r/-rw disks to buy???? Frustrated imac owner..I cannot keep buying and returning disks! Thanks

Well, these iMac drives are finicky and, they are superslim laptop style drives installed vertically where any media could easily shift by 1/100th of an inch, so it's a gamble. I usually use my external burner - it is solid, works well, and can read anything. I've learned that the drive in my iMac likes Verbatim or Imation disks, so you might want to try one of those - they use different drives (change the mfr occasionally), so yours may be different.

  • Problems with DVD/CD optical drive

Hi all, my HP notebook's optical DVD/CD drive no longer reads disks. I have tried several different disks. I insert the disk, close it, then it makes sounds like it is trying to read the disk for about one to two minutes. Then it stops. Nothing else happens.
I tried HP Support Assistant. When it went to do an optical drive check, I inserted a disk (not blank). It did the same thing where it tried to read the disk for about one to two minutes. Then the HP Support Assistant said "Blank disk detected. The optical media drive does not support this media type. No testing will be performed."
The thing is, the disk I inserted is NOT a blank disk.
    Can anyone help?
I have tried deleting and then installing the driver for the drive. The drive is also up to date.
    Thank you!
    Kelly

    1. Open Device manager, expand CD/DVD-rom drives, right click on your dvd drive and select "uninstall"
Close DM and restart the PC, if this does not fix the issue,
    2. click the "Run Now" button on this page, reboot when done.
If these 2 steps fail to get is working correcly the drive is defective and needs replaced.

  • T540p - DVD/CD optical drive not found

Hi, I am trying to access my optical drive. It opens, I can insert a CD, then it obviously does something but is gets quiet after a minute or so. There  is no entry in the device manager list and I can't see it in the file explorer either.
Previously, it worked at some ocasions - but caused the system to crash. Now it is completely gone. Tried to do a hardware scan using LSC but this service does not seem to be available either (tried to reboot various times).
    Could anybody help?

  • IDVD 4.1 burning to an external DVD-R/RW drive

I have a G4 dual 500 with iDVD 4.1 (5 & 6 require 733 MHz or higher). I just bought an external DVD-R/RW drive and I want to use it with iDVD. I downloaded Patchburn to assist iDVD in seeing the drive. Every time I click Burn, iDVD crashes.
All of my media is on an external drive (Lacie d2 Firewire). Has anyone had any success with this or do I have to upgrade my processor?

I'm not sure patchburn works with OS 10.4.x - when iDVD 4 was released, the OS was at 10.2.8
I suspect you need to update to the iLife '06 applications to get your external drive to work. However, iDVD says it requires at least a 733Mhz G4 or later processor.
Have you tried to see if patchburn will allow you to write a disk image file out of iDVD? If it does that, you can use Apple's DIsk Utility to burn the image to writable media.

    iMac,PB15,PB12,6iPods,2iBooks,4XP PCs   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I've always been one of those 'lemme fix it myself' kinda guys and would really dislike sending the machine back for any reason. Most importantly is the information available on my hard drive. I don't care what anyone or any service person tells you about security of information, if it can be accessed someone somewhere will use it. I cannot understand why Apple would be so foolish to make the Intel iMac so non-fix unfriendly. But then I can't figure out why on earth they didn't provide an emergency eject button either - what are (were) these people thinking (our stuff is so good no CD would ever get stuck???)?
I haven't solved the problem getting the Lacie Slim to burn but I keep plugging away at it. The internal drive does work and it only whirrs or grinds every now and then. I'm able to use the Lacie to copy DVD and CD files over to the desktop and then burn using the Internal and that cuts the wear/tear on that interal down. But if that internal goes out on me I'll need an external solution.
Roxio wrote me back and said they were working on a Universal release of Toast 7 so that's something to look forward to.
I also need a universal release of Final Cut Pro which is "due" this month.
Thanks to all for the comments and advice. If a solution is found I'll post it here.

  • Imac will not read cd or dvd in optical drive

When loading a DVD I get the following message "A valid device could not be found for playback [-70017]

I had the same problem on my iMac. I followed the instructions at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2020977, (Klaus1)
i.e. I used the disk utility to restore file permissions and - after a restart - it solved the problem.

  • Change emergency restart to external optical drive?

My four year old emac has had increasingly more frequent incidents where there is no display after restarting. I am quite adept at resetting the PRAM. However, this last time, nothing worked: I reset the PRAM; reset firmware; pressed the reset button; reset permissions. What did work was inserting the TechTool Pro 4.0 disk into the superdrive and restarting while holding the "C" key. I have restarted a few times since then normally. However, I now have a problem with the superdrive which no longer spins normally - it goes clunk, clunk and ejects the disk after about 10 seconds. I do have a Sony external firewire DVD rewritable optical drive which works fine so I am not inclined to have the Superdrive repaired. But, finally getting to my question, can I change settings in advance so that holding the "C" key will restart from the external drive? I know I could chose this by holding the "option" key while restarting but I won't be able to do so if there is no display.

    ja-bo,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You can use the option key to bring up Startup Manager to select the external optical drive as the boot device.
Hvae you ever tested if the PRAM battery is discharged or below voltage spec? Replacement instructions are at eMac - Do-It-Yourself.

What you want to do is select the files you want to move then go File>Relocate Masters. Your images will then be referenced to a location you select. Aperture will still continue to manage the images, but the external hard drive must be connected if you want to make adjustments. Aperture will retain Metadata and any adjustment information. Your original images will stay unmodified on your external drive.

  • Pavilion dv6500 Optical Drive Problems

    Hi,
I have a laptop dv6500 with a DVD/DC Optical Drive from LiteOn model DS8A1P that came with the system. Suddenly, the drive can only read DVD's but cannot read CD's, even manufacturer's softwares or legitimate music cd's.
I went to the Driver/Firmware page with my ServiceTag and the firmware listed for an Optical Drive shows a different model...and even if I try running the firmware, it's telling that the target drive couls not be found.
Again, in my Device Manager, it shows as Slimtype DVD A DS 8A1P ATA Device and says that it's working properly.
I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-bit.
    Any help would be appreciated.
Should I try upgrading the Bios?

I can try this, but be fore I do it, I should tell you that I tried the instruction in this article:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01532060&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3552676&lan...
I was able to read the disc from the command prompt, so I'm assuming it can be a software or firmware issue.
I also tried a system restore without any success....what if I re-installed Vista, is this a waste of time? I also upgraded the bios...
Last thing, the drive is spinning when I insert the CD but but fails to be read!
