Re check disk utility

Hi... all,
What and where is the check disk utility?
I dropped my external 1T western digital and although I ran through this with the disk utility, It did this in a couple of mins...
On my PC this would have taken hours. Did it actually check all the sectors in that time? Or is there no sector checking?
Anita

I don't believe there is any built-in surface scan in any Mac OS X. If Disk Utility gave you a clean bill of health, you are probably fine. If you really want to do a surface scan, you can spend some money for TechTool Pro or DiskWarrior and check it that way.

    Hi
I've tried top open logic pro 9 today which I use daily and have been for the last 4 years. All software etc. is up to date. However it just quits and I get the 'logic pro quit unexpectedly' message. I've tried this several times in the last hour, including a restart and checking disk utility etc. Anyone else have the same problem? And if so, how did you resolve it please?

    Failing that....
    Please download Etrecheck from here...

  • Check Disk Utility

  • Didnt used check disk utility on install & want to reinstall from scratch

Things are buggy so figured a reinstall this time using the Check disk utlity thingy - anyone know what I need to do?

OK, I think we can narrow this down.
My first inclination is to think that you might have some directory corruption that's interfering with how your Mac is running. The comment above to back up your data is right on. Do that first.
Once that's done, try booting to your install disk, selecting Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, and then select your hard drive. Pick "Verify disk," and if it needs repair, choose "Repair disk" - this may resolve the issue.
Look and see if you have any third party addons that need updating, or applications that run at login (you can find them in System Preferences, Accounts, login items) and disable them. See if that helps.
If worse comes to worst, you may need to erase your drive and reinstall from scratch, and then restore from your backup, but let's see how the other steps go first.
The "Check Install Disk" is verifying the DVD, not your hard drive, so that's not likely to help at all in this situation.
Post back after running Disk Utility and let us know the results.

  • Where is Check disk utility on itunes?

I am told that I have a corrupted itunes and need to run chkdsk utility. Having limited IT knowledge and getting no where with Add/Remove Programs under itunes, perhaps someone out there can help me. My itunes library is intact, however my ipod is empty and I've tried to reload with no success. I'm sure that once the corruption is repaired, that reloading will work. thanks

1)Enable Disk Mode on your iPod. See: Putting iPod into disk
    mode.
    2) Determine the drive letter of your iPod from My
    Computer.
    3) Go to Start, Run.
    4) Type cmd. Hit Enter to take you to the Command
    Prompt.
    5) Type chkdsk /f X:, where X is the drive letter of
your iPod. Hit Enter, and any corrupt files are found
    and corrected.
Reset the iPod to exit disk mode.
Thanks, have been trying, but hasn't worked, more corrupted errors showing up, such as
    ipod_Control/iTunes/iTunesPrefs
    iPod_Control/Music/FOI/JGDU.m4a
    iPod_Control/iTunes/iTunes.DB
Lost, and it's very quiet without my iPod. Mi

  • Check disk utility error message----itunes.exe- Corrpt File

Isn't this a MAC error message not sure why i'm recieving this message. This happen when I attempt to move music from the library to ipod....Please help

Are you saying that you have songs on your iPod that are not in iTunes? If you have been relying on iPod as the sole backup for your music, I think you now understand why it's important to backup your library in some fashion, such as burning data CD/DVD's. When you have to restore your iPod because of an iPod problem, your music is gone.
You can use the following instructions from MacMuse to move the contents of your iPod back into iTunes.

Once you are backup & running, PLEASE BACKUP YOUR FILES!

  • Disk Utility can't repair this disk

I have been having trouble booting. It started when I connected a router to it. It seemed to eat up the free disk space and I only have 77 MB left or something around that.
Anyway, I tried deleting files with command-s commands, and it worked one time and it freed up 2 GB of space. I restarted the computer and when I tried to start it up, it still got stuck in the gray screen with the whirly thing at the bottom. I checked the space and it was 77MB now.
I decided to boot from the Install Disk (Snow Leopard 10.6.0).
I checked Disk Utility first and verified the disk. It came up with the message:
"Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk .... disk, and restore your backed-up files."
    What should I do now?
I have the Mac HD volume on backup already so I don't have to do the back up stage.
Should I erase the disk while I am in Disk Utility?
And format it to Mac OS Extended Journal?
And then install the operating system again?
    Thanks.

To answer your questions, first, some other options...
If you fill your disk up that far, you are going to have problems. Don't ever do this, 10% is a bare minimum, you may need even more, depending on the size of your disc.
I have seen before where a disc repair utility couldn't perform its function simply because there was not enough slack space available on the drive. While I have never seen this with disc utility, it is possible that the disc is repairable as-is, if you could just free up a couple more gigs of space first.
Secondly, you could also try Disk Warrior, or to a lesser extent, Techtool Pro, or even iDefrag. I have personally never had Techtool Pro fix anything that Disk Utility or Disk Warrior couldn't fix, so I hesitate to even mention it, but I have had Disk Warrior and iDefrag clear up problems that Disk Utility either couldn't detect, or couldn't fix.
If you are still in dire straits, you should re-partition the drive using disk utility. This is the safest route, then go from there.
    good luck!

  • No drives show in disk utility.  holding option only shows internet recovery

Alright. I had windows 7 running in bootcamp on a 13 inch macbook pro 2011 june/july model and everything was running fine untill i closed the lid. When i closed the lid down after about 2-3 minutes the laptop restarted.. upon hearing this sound i opened the lid back up to find a white screen and after awhile a flashing folder like icon with a big question mark started flashing. So i rebooted thr laptop and held down option key. When the select network came up there were no drives listed above it.. after a minute or two internet recovery came up. So i ran this.it then went back to the select language for installing lion again. After navigating through the menus it came to select drive but the list was empty. When i checked disk utility ither it frozenor listed like two main cataagorys and two subs. I need some help. Anyone know whats wrong? Will update with more information needed. Note: i do not have the disks that came with the macbook pro i bought it used from a pawnshop around january. Has run perfect untill today

Also, Finder displays the correct disk usage at the root level:

  • HT204384 My SD card wont read in FInder but will show in disk utility, any advice?

Hi, my card reader started to become inconsistant over the last week and it has now stopped reading cards all together. It will show up in Disk utility so i can format it etc but it just wont show in the Finder section. When i remove the card without prompting, i get the 'Failed to eject properly' message. Any advice would be appreciated. I only purchased in Nov 2011 brand new so not sure what operating system it is but you may know from date of purchase.
    Thanks
    Rob

I had this problem too on my MBP mid-2012 running Mavericks.  SD cards (in MBP slot or USB reader) would not show up in Finder.  I was able to see them mounted in Disk Utility.  What tipped me off that they were in fact mounting (and led me to check Disk Util) is that the OS complained of improperly ejecting the sd card when I removed it.
To clarify what BDAqua said, but I didn't understand until I saw another thread, here's what fixed my problem:  Click on 'Finder' 'Preferences', select Sidebar tab and tick the box 'external disks' in the Devices section.
Now my sd cards show up.  Thanks!!

  • Lacie 1TB external HDD recently stopped doing Time Machine backups. Disk Utility recommends that the disk needs to be repaired.

I've been using my Lacie 1TB external HDD for my Time Machine backups for quite sometime. Its never given me any problems until now.
It recently stopped doing the backups, so I checked Disk Utility and it recommended that I repair the disk. How long does it take for Disk Utility to repair a 1TB external HDD?
    Other things to consider:
    - Cant find the disk in the Finder, I used to be able to do that before.
    - When I tried to go a Time Machine backup, it said the disk was not available.
Upon using disk utiliy, I successfully verified the disk. Then I initiated the disk repair process.
    The current status:
    - checking file system
    - Volume repair complete
    - Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
The progress bar says "Verify and Repair volume "LaCie"" - the progress bar does not indicate how much has been done or how long it will take.
    Capacity: 1 TB (1,000,204,476,416 Bytes)
    Mount Point: Not Mounted
    Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    All other status fields blank.
Any one know how long it will take for Disk Utility to repair the external HDD? Any other ideas as to how I can get the Lacie HDD to reconnect with the Macbook and resume normal operations? i.e. Time Machine backups, accessing contents through the Finder.

Mine Failed after 3 years and 4 months of using it as a Dedicated TM Backup drive...
When I used Disk Utility for repairs... it went from 7 minutes to 4 hours and after about 10 minutes it was saying 40 hours...
So I just replace it with a New EHD...

  • Mac sees iPod as external hd in disk utility???

    (10-3-06)
Note: I also posted this in the iTunes discussion, but no one responded.
    (10-2-06)
I've been having problems w/my iPod recently. I'd plug in my iPod into the dock i have and my mac wouldn't recognize it. and since it says "do not disconnect", i was scared to unplug and check out what was going on.
Long story short: i've done all the recommendation steps: resetting it does help, but still doesn't get recognized in iTunes or my desktop. Yestersay, i took it in ym car as usual and was listening to it. no problem, plugged it in, no problem,. Today, i was messing w/my computer and had to reset it. the iPod was already plugged in, but nothing came on the desktop. checked disk utility and the ipod looked like it was one of my external hds, but nothing came up on iTunes or my desktop still.
Note: Because of iTunes 7.0 being an utter failure, i switched back to 6.0.4.
right now, it's plugged into my AC adapter. I'm just wondering i what i did wrong, if anything and if the NON-Recognition will continue if i plug it into my computer. plus, if i plug it in and the "do not disconnect" continues, but nothing shows up on iTunes or desktop. any help is appreciated.

any thoughts? i'm afraid of syncing my music cause i'll never get my iPod off my comp b/c "do not disconnect" warning.

  • Disk Utility Window is Blank

On my Macbook Pro the disk utility window does not fully load. Much of the window information is missing and the program is not working at all. If I hide it and unhide it, it becomes a blank white window. It is the only program that does this.
Macbook Pro 2 gig Ram, OS 5.2

    Denbee,
Quit Disk Utility, and navigate to your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Prefernces folder where you will find the com.apple.DiskUtility.plist file. Drag that file to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and check Disk Utility for normal behavior.

  • Disk Utility will not unmount drive

I have a cloned copy of my Macintosh drive on a LaCie firewire drive as backup. I have booted to the firewire drive and encountered the following problems with the Disk Utility.
    1) Verify & repair disk function on the Mac volume failed with the error: Could not unmount disk.
    2) Volume erase on the Mac failed with the error: Could not unmount disk.
Using Terminal I have checked to see if any processes on the Mac drive are active, but that does not seem to be my problem. I tested this idea based the suggestion in a thread that reported the same type of problem.
I have used this backup system for many years with no problems. I always use the normal procedures for system maintenance that Mac users recommend.
Any suggestions for resolving this problem?

I have wiped the LaCie drive many times and reset the disk format. Just as a drill, I repeated the process this morning. No change in my situation.
I use OnyX on a regular basis to run BSD scripts. Based on your suggestion I ran all other maintenance processes. Did not solve my problem.
Since I last posted I ran the Apple Hardware Test, and the results indicated no problems. I also checked Disk Utility while booted from my installation disk, and successfully ran the First Aid repair disk function. So in this mode the Mac disk dismounts correctly.
The Mac drive dismount problem indicates that a process is active on the Mac drive. I have checks this out several times and I find no evidence that this is the source of the problem.
I plan on meeting with a friend on Monday who also has a Mac. I will test the LaCie drive connected to his computer to see if I get the same results. If I do then I will replace the LaCie drive.
Thanks for your assistance. If you have any additional ideas just post and I will followup.

  • When I check my boot SSD drive using Disk Utility under Mavericks, I often get "Incorrect number of extended attributes" errors.  But if I boot off an external drive and check the same SSD, no errors are reported.  Is this a bug in Mavericks?

When I check my boot SSD drive using Disk Utility under Mavericks, I often get "Incorrect number of extended attributes" errors.  But if I boot off an external drive and check the same SSD, no errors are reported.
This happens not just with the SSD in my Mac Mini, but with another SSD in my MacBook (both now running Mavericks).  So far as I know, all of the kit I am using is in good order (despite the file corruption reports).  So I am beginning to wonder if it could be due to a bug in Mavericks?  Both SSD drives have been formatted to MacOS Extended (journaled) format.  Should I have used a different format, I wonder?
Has anyone else encountered this issue?
    Does anyone have a solution?
Or an explanation that might help my investigation of the issue?
    Thanks guys,

I understand that the Corsair Force 3 is not one of the SSD drives that are supported on Apple Macs.
I did try downloading and using Trim Enabler, but the error message came up both when it was off and when it was on.
I understand that not everyone thinks Trim Enabler is a good program, though there is a new version out now, so I may give it another try.
