Re:checking masterdata char in data dictionary

Morning gurus
if we want to check  the contents of a particular table we  will enter the table name in se16 to view the contents
and if the data target  is a masterdata char then we cannot enter the name of that particular field directly we should use some naming scenario if front of the field name can u guys tell me what is that scenario for exmaple if the char name is zcs_ab  we should use something like /bic/----
something?

That is a Data element gives you technical information about that object like DATA TYPE, LENGTH, DOMAIN, LABEL, DECIMAL PLACES etc...

    Good afternoon.
    Today I work at a company that develops software to several customers, and we are not the main responsible for there databases, because of this I can't garantee that the database is in agreement with the software version.
    To be able to ensure that the client base has no divergence with the software version I'm thinking about creating my own data dictionary, which at first it would be something like the Oracle data dictionary, after that I need to set up mechanisms to confront my new data dictionary with what is there on the client. My data dictionary will be created here in the company.
    In addition, this data dictionary also would be used by the development team, for example whenever they want to confirm if some object exists or not exists in production. As we know the development database is a 'mess'.
    Does anyone have any suggestion or hint for me about this project?

I don't see what building a data dictionary would accomplish. If you are just trying to validate that all 1800 objects exist, couldn't you just generate the script from the Oracle data dictionary in your known good database and send that to the customer?

  • Select schemas from relational model on import from data dictionary option

    Hi All,
    I have one relational model with 3 diferent schemas,
    I want to compare one of my schemas with the data dictionary I have in a database,
    I select the import option in the general file menu, select from data dictionary option,
    select the connection from my database,swap target model checked,select a physical model and select the objects i want to compare from the database,
    My problem is that the result is the comparison between all the objects in my model and the objects in the database that I have selected,
    what I really want is to compare a list of objects in my model to a list of objects in my database,
    this could be possible? or always need to compare all the objects of the model?

    Hi jbellver,
    there is no any development in DM 3.1.0.691 on that problem. In production release you'll be able to compare objects in subview with database or just to select several objects and compare them with database. And of course "generate in DDl" filtering still can be used - it works at "Compare dialog" level.

    AFAIK , its no. You can check the path from the show parameter command like following,

    Hi all,
                can anyone tell me what is the process of creating a secondary index.?
                can we create a secondary index if a field is assigned with primary key?
                 can we create secondary index for a mara table field?
                when we click on INDEXES in data dictionary ---> database table by selecting a field then we get unique index and non-unquie index, what does that mean?

    What is Secondary Index:
    first i will tell u little about primary index.
    The primary index contains the key fields of the table and a pointer to the non-key fields of the table. The primary index is created automatically when the table is created in the database.
    You can create further indexes on a table in the ABAP Dictionary. These are called secondary indexes.
    PURPOSE:
    This is necessary if the table is frequently accessed in a way that does not take advantage of the sorting of the primary index for the access. Different indexes on the same table are distinguished with a three-place index identifier.
    Generally it is used when field which u want is not a primary field .
    Advatange:
    1. faster access to data when field is not a primary key field.
    Disadvatnage:
    1. Slower down database table inset, update delete commands.
    You go for secondary index when you have any SELECT statement which has a WHERE clause which is not effectively using the existing index(s). But this decision of additional index has to be made in sync with the Basis and Functional team. Every additional index will be a burden on the database and the system resources.
    The secondary index is a type of index in database table. Indexes are used to improve the performances of data retrieval from the table. This happens by passing the values to these indices during SELECT query in the WHERE clause.
    There are different types of indices. Primary key is default present for all the tables in database. Only ONE Primary key can exist in a database table. It results in unique records in the database table.
    The other type of index is secondary index. Multiple fields can be grouped to make a secondary index of table. If all the field values is passed during SELECT query, the performance increases drastically.
    Not many fields should be included in secondary index. Large number of fields reduces the performance of INSERT query of database.
    Indexes are used to speed up data selection from the database. System chosse and use the index based on the fields given in WHERE and HAVING clause.
    The primary index is always created automatically in the R/3 System. It consists of the primary key fields of the database table. This means that for each combination of fields in the index, there is a maximum of one line in the table.
    If you are searching on non-key fields, you can create your own secondary index, which can restrict the number of table entries searched to form the result set.
    Improper use of Secondary index can slow down the performance. Discuss with Basis team before creating a secondary index.

  • Discrepancy in OUTPUTLEN in ALV_FIELDCATALOG_MERGE and Data Dictionary

    Hi Gurus,
    I have a program that uses ALV_FIELDCATALOG_MERGE to create a dynamic table. When running it using table VICDCONDCALC or VICDCONDDIST the output length produced for field CALCNUMBER (data element RECDCALCNUMBER) is 6 however when trying to view it in the data dictionary table like DD04L the output length is 5. When I debugged the program there is a statement IMPORT NAMETAB X030L_WA X031L_TAB ID TABNAME. in FM DD_GET_NAMETAB after it passes through this statement the internal table X031L_TAB has the field above with 6 as the External length. Where does the FM retrieved the value 6? Is there any database/transparent table in SAP that I could use to query the table that will produce value of 6?

    There is always a problem with output length in the FM - REUSE_ALV_FIELDCATALOG_MERGE. Go to utilities> settings>ABAP Editor --> Editor --> select the check box Downwards-comp line (72).  Try to run the program I think the output length will be same for both.

  • New To SQL Developer Data Modeler - Data Dictionary Report

    I am new to Data Modeler and I am currently learning what I can do and can't with it. Is there a way to generate a "Data Dictionary" report? We would like a report we can distribute that describes all tables and columns with descriptions and comments. We used to use an old version of Power Designer and we could do this from the data model we created. Is it possible to do something like this from SQL Developer Datas Modeler?

    Saxon is just an option, you don't need it by default.
    Could be permissions problem. What are you working on i.e. OS? What java version do you use?
    Even though you have specified directory for the reports do you have permissions to write there?
    Report generation directories priority is:
    1. Custom directory if specified in Settings->Data Modeler->Default Reports Directory
    2. /datamodeler/reports/
    3. User home directory
    You must have permissions somewhere on these directories. On the other hand you are saying that report_data.xml is generated so you have permissions.
    Okay. Now I saw a bug in 710. When you click "Generate report" there are progress dialogs and result dialog, but if you meanwhile click somewhere or change focus, these dialogs are hiding below main "Reports" dialog i.e. you are not seeing them. If you use Alt+Tab the result dialog will popup. This bug is fixed in the next release.
    So you must see either result dialog or error dialog at the end of report generation. If not check with Alt+Tab if it is not hidden somewhere below and if there is no such dialog close the DataModeler and check the log file for some error.
    There is SQL Developer Data Modeler 3.3 Early Adopter Available.

    Above issue is fixed there and report is opening automatically.

  • Synchronizing Column Comments from Relational Model to Data Dictionary?

    I've changed/added column comments to a table in my Relational Model. When I try to sync the changes to the Data Dictionary of the Database the new/changed column comments are never included. I can actually see that the values in the Field "Comment in RDBMS" are different in the Compare Models Preview Window but the line is not highlighted in red as I expect, in fact it is even grayed out. I also can't check the corresponding checkbox "selected".
    Is there a way to get the comments to synchronize? Do I miss any option I have to set first? Ist this a bug or expected behaviour?
    I'm using version 4.0.3 x64 of Data Modeler.
    Any help would be much appreciated,

    Hi Charlie,
    The greying out of the "Comment in RDBMS" property would suggest that you have filtered out this property for Column objects in a previous Compare.
    To unset the filtering, repeat the sync, and when it displays the Compare Models dialog, select the Options tab and then the Properties Filter tab below it.
    Select "Columns" in the left pane, and then find the entry for the "Comment in RDBMS" property in the right pane.  The "Included" check box should be set.
    You can then select the Refresh Trees button below these two panes.
    If you then go back to the Details tab, any differences in the "Comment in RDBMS" property for Columns should now be highlighted in red.

    We have an old SAP SAP system we just shut down, but Oracle is still up.
    I am trying to put together a query using DBA_INDEXES and a SAP Data dictionary table, that will show me what tables are in Oracle and not in the SAP data dictionary.
    I cannot bring up SAP, but database is still up.

    Table DD12L contains the definition of the SECONDARY indexes.
    Watch it, indexes may be concatenated to table with ^ or ~ or severel
    _ chars so an index 3 for a table might be named
    table~3
    table^3
    table_____3
    depending on what upgrade History the system has.
    For primary indexes, you should ensure, that every table has an index
    with suffix 0 as in
    table~0
    table^0
    table_____0

    When I query DBA_PART_TABLES.PARTITIONING_TYPE it says 'range'. I want to be able to differential an interval from other range based partitions in the data dictionary?
