Re-classifying mp3's as Podcasts?

I have downloaded some lectures in mp3 form from a professional congress. Unfortunately iTunes is placing these in my music collection, whereas I would prefer them to be in the PodCast section.
Now, I know they are mp3's, and I gather podcasts are somehow different, and changing the 'classification' to Podcast doesn't make any difference. Can anyone explain why a Podcast is different to an mp3, and whether there is any way to get iTunes to put these tracks into the Podcast section?

A podcast is downloaded via an RSS feed, which includes extra info for iTunes (or other feeder) to add.
Here's a great script (from DougScripts) to convert MP3 files to a podcast so they show up under the Podcast tab.

  • Unable to change my mp3 file to podcast

I can change my individual mp3 files to podcasts in iTunes10 by setting the "Media Kind", but new iTunes 11 does not do anything. This must be a bug.
    Please fix it.

Thank you for the link but it can't be used in Moutain Lion because Web Sharing is not available in System Preferences -> Sharing.
I hope there are other solutions. This is really ******* me off.

  • Why do manually added mp3s in the Podcasts app all show up in the same folder?

    Let me explain!
I like to download lectures and talks and audio books from other sources than iTunes.
I like to add these mp3 files to iTunes, change the Media type of them from Music to Podcast, and transfer them to my iPod Touch. This is so I will more easily know which ones have been listened to and can be removed.
This worked (and works) well in the Music app. Everything was separated into folders based on what album name I had manually assigned to the ID3 tags of the files.
But in the Podcast app, all of these files are now lumped into one folder.
I currently have eight un-listened-to episodes of Philip K. Dick's Valis on my iPod Touch. But the folder shows a count of 106 unheard episodes in relation to this audio book, because it lumps all of my other manually added podcast media tracks into the same folder.
    Why is this?
Why does the Podcasts app refuse to let me separate manually added files into individual folders based on album information?
Had the My Stations feature let me populate its playlists in a more rational manner, and also allowed me to manually change the running order of the tracks (something which only seems to be possible in the On-The-Go playlist), I would not think that this omission was such an annoyance.
I have been searching for months for mentions of this problem, but I have not seen a single one, and so I have finally decided to make my own thread.
Let me know if the nature of my problem remains unclear.
    Joakim

    That doesn't do anything.
When I plug my phone in and attempt to sync it with iTunes and click on "Steven's iPhone" under "Devices" the display to the right just says "loading..." and it stays like that for hours. Nothing happens.
As far as I can tell, there is literally no way for me to delete the photos from my iPhone and I therefore, cannot upgrade to the newest software, download new apps, etc.

  • Can I set MP3 files as "Podcast" so that I can get the blue "Unplayed" dot?

Here's my scenario: I have a whole bunch of audio files of Spanish lessons that are in MP3 format that I want to put on to my iPod. There's quite a lot of them: 82 in fact, and they're titled lesson 1, lesson 2, lesson 3, etc.
In order for me to be able to see at a glance, from one day to the next, what files I have listened to, or to be more precise, what was the LAST file I listened to and what is the NEXT file I should listen to, I was wondering if there was some way I could somehow have these regular MP3 files show up as PODCASTS?
The reason I ask this is because non-played podcasts have that little blue dot next to them that shows that they have not been played, and played podcasts don't have that little blue dot.
Obviously, if I could have my Spanish audio files as podcasts, with blue dots, then I could see instantly what is the next file I have to listen to, without having to try and remember the lesson number.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance...

Might take a little work, but you can do it be creating an RSS file for the content, dumping it on a web server, and "subscribing" to it.
    * Grab an RSS file from any podcast and save it on your system.
    * Edit the file, changing all the description data to something relevant (or removing it)
    * For the episodes, change the file location reference from "http://..." to "file://localhost/...thefile_on_your_harddrive". This makes the RSS file only useful to someone who already has the files. It also results in iTunes duplicating the files as you subscribe and it "downloads" each episode.
You may also be able to use GarageBand '06 to make a suitable RSS file, but I haven't ever tried this.

  • Convert regular mp3 file to podcast?

I regularly record radio shows on my desktop Mac and then put them on my ipod to hear later. I'm trying to find a way of marking those I've listened to on the ipod. I wondered about the possibility of making them podcast files, so that they go to the Podcast folder and get the blue-dot-unplayed/no-dot-played feature. This would give me what I want, I think - a way of managing visually on the ipod what I have and have not listened to. But how do I make a regular mp3 file 'think' that it is a podcast file? I've looked around - here and elsewhere - and it seems to involve esoteric stuff about id3 tags and particularly the pcst tag. But is there a very easy way for non-geek me to do what I want? Or even a way that doesn't involve converting to podcast files, but just marking the files on the ipod in some way as 'played'? I'd really welcome some advice from you knowledgeable guys.

Thank you chaps: they both sound like good schemes and I'll try them.
However, they both rely on reconnecting the ipod to the desktop machine to change the status of the played tracks: only then will they disappear as played tracks/podcasts.
Is there not a way of marking particular tracks in a playlist on the ipod, using the ipod, so that I can see which I've played and which not? The single-star rating trick doesn't help, because you don't see that on a list of tracks. Any other ideas?

  • Converting mp3 file to podcast

Is there any way of taking an arbitrary mp3 file (or other audio format) and getting iTunes and iPod to see it as a podcast?
I have mp3 files of lectures that I would like to access as podcasts, although they were not access via podcast feeds.

I have a similar need, and I'd appreciate some additional information -- especially regarding how to "host" my own podcast. In my case (very much like the original post), I have a series of MP3 files that are lectores (sermons, actually). So far, I've put them on my iPod by just adding them to my Music Library. But they're difficult to find, and I'd like the additional advantages of making them "podcasts".
Can anyone provide more detail -- either on simple tools to use (for the XML, or the personal web hosting that was mentioned), or a step-by-step procedure to just take my own MP3s, and make them truly podcasts, so that I can get them not only into iTunes, but onto my iPod, as well?

  • Mp3 file to podcast

Ok, since iTunes is now version 11 I haven't been able to tag/create
mp3 files (recorded radio streams) so that that they show up/play
in iTunes or phone. Going to 'get info' on file just won't go from a 'music'
file to a 'podcast' file. Anyone have any ideas?

First thing is that a file (music or otherwise) cannot be "made into a podcast" by changing the media type. It never could be.
Poeple have told me, in past discussions on this forum, and in very strong terms, that I'm wrong about this, but the fact remains that something is only a Podcast if it has been downloaded from the internet "as a Podcast", which means: "through the Podcast delivery method".
Perhaps what has happened is that Apple have fixed something that was incorrect (being able to change something into a Podcast simply by changing the Media Type).
As for you actual issue, tagging something so that you can play it on your iPod; I'm not sure I understand what the problem is.
Okay, so you have recorded some audio, which is now presumably on your computer as an MP3 file. Did you add any tagging information when you created the MP3 file, for example in Audacity? If you did, or if you can, then that should show up in iTunes. If not, you can modify the tagging once the file has been imported into your iTunes Library.
Presumably you could import the audio before iTunes 11, and that procedure hasn't changed as far as I'm aware, so you should still be able to import the recordings. Once imported, it can be played in iTunes, even before changing any of the tag information. It can also be added to an iPhone.
So what is it about the tagging that you don't like, apart from not being able to "make it a Podcast". How does making it a Podcast change anything?
I ask, so that I can understand. Then I can possibly offer another solution.

  • Getting Rid Of .mp3 Ending On Podcast Show Title

I just linked my new podcast to iTunes and it just started beign displayed... all good!
My show title ends with .mp3 and I want to remove this ending. My first episode is titled 001 An Introduction To Health Talk Podcast.mp3.
    Where do I change this?

  • Marking MP3's as Podcasts

Hello, I've recently downloaded the Podcast App, and I have a bunch of MP3's of the Ricky Gervais Show downloaded and on my Iphone and Itunes library on the Macbook.
How do I get these out of my Music.app on the phone and into the Podcast app, and also how do I get them in their own section (totally out of the main music library) on my Macbook?
So I want these Podcasts to be totally separate from my music (nothing more annoying than playing on shuffle and having to stumble on a 40 minute audio clip!) both on my Phone and Macbook library, yet still accessible.
The problem on the Macbook side is that if I just make a playlist for them, they still appear in the main music window in the Library.
    So... any help? Thanks.

  • Adding mp3's vs. podcasts

I record audio for our church each week and have bought a .mac account to post sermons and sunday school lessons for downloading. Would it be better to post these as podcasts or mp3's and what's the easiest/best way to accomplish the preferred method.
    Thanks

I have a load of MP3 files that i want to show up under "Podcasts" on both my iTunes and iPod. These MP3 files are files i just downloaded from the Internet and not through iTunes.
It would be really useful to get these sorted under the podcasts heading, any tips or suggestions?
    Thanks.
Sorry, iTunes only files podcasts from stuff downloaded from within iTunes

  • Turn MP3s into a podcast

i have a collection of mp3 files that i would like to turn into a podcast collection.
how can i turn these into a podcast so that they show up in the postcast section of itunes ?
the podcast will be for my own use (ie not to be published anywhere else)

If you mean actually publishing them:
    1. Post the MP3 files onto a server.
    2. Write an XML file which refers to these files and submit it to the iTunes Music Store.
For details on how to do this please see this page:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/podcaststechspecs.html
You say 'for your own use' but of course the podcast, once accepted into the iTunes Store, will be available to anyone.
(If you mean purely locally, you can't copy files into the 'Podcasts' section of your own iTunes program - you could just add them to the music library and then create a playlist containing them.)

  • Converting mp3 to podcast iTunes 11.1.2.31, iPhone 7.0.3

I would like to convert mp3's to podcasts. In the past if I dragged the mp3 into music, then right clicked the file>options and changed media kind to podcast it would move that file into podcasts and when I synced it would move the file onto my iPhone as a podcast. This procedure no longer works. The new update to 7.0.3 no longer has podcasts in Music so I downloaded the Apple Podcast App. Does anyone have a solution?

I am experiencing the same issue. I regularly change mp3 to podcasts within iTunes (change type to podcast and remember position).
Immediately following my update to 11.1.3 (Mac, Mavericks), the files that are created no longer function on my iPhone. iTunes says that they are transferring, but when I open the podcast app, they are not there. All of my downloaded podcasts work fine, but the converted ones are no longer visible or playable.
When I do a spotlight search on the phone, the files show, but the official podcast app and a few other podcast apps that I downloaded cannot see them. These files worked fine after the latest iOS update. It wasn't until getting iTunes 11.1.3 that this problem surface.

  • How to convert mp3 to podcast

I want to convert mp3 files, (lectures) as podcasts to play them on the iphone. The iphone just imports them into music and plays them as songs on the iphone. Just changing the Options to podcast, in the info section doesn't change it on the iphone, only in itunes on the mac?

Here is the answer that works well. The instructions may seem long, but it really isn't hard to do once you've tried it.
To make mp3 files into podcasts:
First, in itunes, find the mp3 file(s) in the music section, and hit edit, then delete. It will tell you that
it will remove it from itunes and the iphone, click OK.
Then it will ask you if you want to put the file in the trash or keep the file
in the music folder. Keep the file. This will remove it from itunes, and the iphone, which is what you want.
Second, open up a finder window on the mac. Navigate to the itunes music folder,
which is in machd/users/johnsmith/music/itunes/itunes music. Then open another finder window alongside the one that is showing the itunes music folder. In that finder window, create a unique named new folder on the desktop, such as "movedmusic". Now, go to the itunes music folder and drag the mp3 file over to the "movedmusic" folder and drop it there. Now, the mp3 file is no longer in itunes at all.
Third, go back to itunes main screen, click File, then "add to library". It will open a mini finder window of it's own. Navigate to the "movedmusic" folder you created on your desktop and select the mp3 file, and let it import into itunes.
Don't worry about where itunes puts it. iTunes will put it in "songs", but that is ok. It is still seen as "new" to itunes.
Fourth, go to the "music" at the top left of itunes menu. Find the newly imported mp3 file. Right click and select "get info". Open "options" and change it from "music" to "podcast" and hit OK. Now, you will see it disappear from the main screen in music. Go to podcasts on the left menu, and it will now be in podcasts. But WAIT! There is one more step to do or it won't sync to your iphone. Now go to the iphone on the left hand menu and select it under "devices". Then go to the iphone's "podcasts" tab, and you'll see the mp3 file you just added as a podcast. Make sure you put a check in the checkbox, that will tell itunes to sync your newly added mp3 PODCAST to your iphone. Then go over to File at the top of itunes and select "sync iphone". After the iphone syncs, your mp3 will be on your iphone in the podcast menu, and not in the songs menu!

  • Uploading .mp3 files vs. uploading .band files for Podcast on iWeb

I teach high school and have my students creating audio files for podcast on my iWeb site. Most of the students give me their files in .band format, but some give them to me in .mp3 format.
    1) Can I upload the .mp3 file for podcasting to iWeb without turning it into a .band file (which I have been doing).
    2) When I drag the .mp3 file into the GarageBand program and then upload it to iWeb, the autopage looks different (no date, no place to write a little blurb, etc.) Is there any way to get them to look the same when using the Share>send to iWeb feature.
    3) I also receive frequent corrupted files (8-bit not supported with an abort button). I have never personally receive this message on files that I have created, but I can't figure out what my students are doing incorrectly--anyone know?
    Thanks for any possible help.

I am putting a link to what I am talking about--maybe that would help?
