Re: Clean up my laptop?

Is it possible to delete everything from my computer to re-load it? I have purchased the new Microsoft Office but can't load it onto my laptop as there is not enough space.
I have deleted a lot of my programmes, but would like to know if there is a way to 'clean up' my laptop and re-load the new software?

Hi,
You can make a Google search and find a program like TuneUp utilities to clean up your laptop. It will remove old unnecessary folder and files, duplicated files, so you can win free space. Try to uninstall more programs to get more space. By the way, how many space is provided for local C: (where is your Os installed). You can also resize the partition but if you have a hdd image recovery, ii's not recommended. You won't be able to use it anymore.

  • "clicky" noise on the "N" after cleaning under t510 laptop.

Hi all, I decided to pop off a few keys on the t510 model thinkpad to clean under the keyboard. I carefully removed the keys and i made sure the hinge mechanisms are intact and the metal are all intact. but i noticed after placing the keys back, the N key is "clicky" as in if i click it lets say in the upper left hand side of the key, the key depressing makes a "clicky" noise, while the other keys on the laptop all make the sort of dull sound when you depress the keys. the weird thing is that if i press the N key in a different region of the key, the sound does not come up...does that mean that the mechanism under the "N" key was damaged when i cleaned it? i sure hope not considering how thinkpad T series are durable and reliable in almost every possible way and it would be a shame that a user can not even remove a key to clean under a laptop for maintenance..
Thanks in advance for any responses!

When I said "playing with", I didn't mean that what you were doing was wrong or unnecessary.  I don't know. I would need to see it. The key clips on at 4 corners, so I thought one corner might not be attached or that one of the 4 corners had the clip damaged when the key was taken off. I have certainly seen them damaged in that way. The reason I guess that they are not considered removable is that a Lenovo Repair place would probably replace the keyboard, rather than taking it apart. I may be wrong. As I said, I fix them all the time.

  • Best app to clean up my laptop?

My laptop is a few years old and getting slow, I downloaded the demo of MacKeeper and it said I have a lot of issues, what I want to know is which is the version that will fix those issues? Will the basic version do it? I don't want to pay for the 60 euro version if the 40 euro one will do it.

In addition to the user tip stedman point you to, also read the tip by Thomas Reed: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1982
There really are no programs you need to clean a Mac hard drive...most issues are due to the amount of storage being used.  As you get close to a full hard drive the system slows down.  You can see your hard drive usage by going to Finder, Applications, Utilities, Activity Monitor and see what your hard drive usage is, cpu usage, memory usage and network activity.
Clean off a lot of the videos, photos, tunes that are taking excessive space to speed the system.
Be cautious of software that is for cleanup as that can damage the operating system...just had a user today who did that and ended up having to reinstall Mac OS X becasue of all of the damaged files.

  • Cleaned Fan, Now Laptop Shuts Down After 1 hr.

I own a pavilion dv5 1140tx laptop and for the past few months it has been really overheating and so I decided to open it up and clean the fan. This laptop is really poorly designed since you have to completely dismantle it to get to the fan. Like I had to take out the HDD, Monitor, Mothe Board, Optical Drive, everything!!!
Anyway I cleaned out the fan which had a considerable amount of dust in it (its 3 years old) and then I peiced it back together. After that it seemed that the fan was running a bit more smoothly and there was far less heat coming from the laptop, I turened it on and everything works the same but after about an hour of use it shuts itself down just as it would if it were overheating, but it isn't anywhere near as hot as it used to get.
I set it to a balanced power setting, and changed the BIOS so that the fan isn't constantly running and that seems to have helped it but it still shuts down after a while!
Might it be that the heat sink isn't close enough to the CPU and so the CPU over heats before the heat can disapate into the heatsink? Anyone else have this problem?

    Hi Mario,
Before cleaning the fan with an air duster can, I restored the computer to factory settings. It was only after that my laptop started shutting down shortly after start-up. It stopped doing that eventually, but what I did to prevent overheating is I sprayed the fan's underneath the laptop with air from an air duster can to remove any possible dust clogging, thereby causing the fun to work much harder than it normally should, and it seems to be running fine now. I haven't had any problems with start-up, and in fact, when in use, it doesn't make as much noise at is use to. My laptop used to ramp up the fan speed quite often because not enough heat was being expelled from the laptop. Luckily, it doesn't do that anymore.
Doing further research led me to a video  called: "Reducing Heat and Fan Noise in Desktop and Notebook PC's" on HP's support page.
If anyone ever does research on the same issue and this post ends up as a result to what you are researching for, than I suggest what Mario said, but also watch the video I referenced above by following this link:

  • My phone is broken and I have yet to understand how to get iCloud to wipe it clean from my laptop.  Can anyone talk me through it?

I am trying to wipe my broken iPhone 4 and have signed into iCloud on my laptop, but seem to be going around in circles trying to find a simple option to wipe my phone. It keeps telling me to install iCloud, which I have.  Help!

I should also add that my Mac will not recognize my phone so I have no way to communicate with it.  What can I do??

  • What is the best way to backup all Photos, Videos, Music, and other documents so that I can basically clean up my laptop? I would like to keep all applications during the "reboot", and I already have an external hard drive.

I have filled up the 500 GB of internal storage on my Mid 2010 laptop, and I have no intentions of getting anything newer. I would like to backup basically everything so that I can pull it off a hard drive as needed, but I am worried if I "reboot" my laptop, I'll lose all files and applications.

You say that you already have an external hard drive? Of what capacity? With some libraries, it's simply a matter of dragging and dropping them to copy them to an external drive (such as videos, etc.). But you want to be a bit careful about moving your iTunes Library so you won't lose the links to your music (see -> http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449 and http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751) and photos (see -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229?viewlocale=en_US).
Once you've established that your relocated Libraries are still functioning and that you've copied your movies, you can delete these items from your internal drive. You could, if you wanted, invest in a larger internal drive so that you could always have your data stored so that you can take it with you, of course.
But if you safely move all of your files to an external, you can trash the originals and make space on your internal drive.

  • I cleaned up my laptop

My laptop is older - L655-S5153.  I need a driver for it.  I went to there site , but I don't know what to choose.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I need a driver to make it work again.
Your support page is here :  http://support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=2861813
Then select Windows 7 64 bit to see drivers available. You may need all of them or just some of them, not all will apply to your laptop. Example there may be 2 types of a component so you will have to see which ones you need.
We don't know what driver you need without more info from you?
Go to start, control panel, device manager look for yellow question marks. (see photo- no yellow question marks on photo and from a different model)
Or if you already know what your looking for use the newest version of that driver.
A suggestion from a previous windows 7 driver question by : jerry lippey a leading adviser on Toshiba forums regarding order of driver installation:
(I would install the Intel chipset software and Intel display driver prior to other drivers. Install the Value Added Package before other Toshiba utilities.)

  • Clean install for the 1st time from Macbook late 2008

    Hi all!
I'm doing a clean install for the first time before installing Maverick. I have a Macbook from late 2008, which came  with Leopard, but I always  did an upgrade whenever installing Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion.
My question is when I do the clean install, the laptop goes back to factory settings, right? Do I need to install all the operating systems or can I go straight to Maverick?
I'mthinking of creating a bootable usb drive with Maverick or should I just install it from the Apple store?
It's my first time erasing the hard drive, I don't want to damage anything, just trying to be extra careful.
Thank you in advance for the help

The hard drive is wiped clean, but the hardware is the same. There is no "factory settings" until you actually install an operating system. In your case it will be Mavericks. Your laptop did not come this way from the factory.
To return to true factory conditions you have to install the OS that came with your computer. I know this seems like nitpicking, but it's better to have the facts straight.
Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
    1.  After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
    2.   Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
             a. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
              b. After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
              c. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
              d. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
              e. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
              f. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
    3.          Use Lion DiskMaker 3.0 or DiskMaker X to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive.
Make your own Mavericks flash drive installer using the Mavericks tool:
You can also create a Mavericks flash drive installer via the Terminal. Mavericks has its own built-in installer maker you use via the Terminal:
You will need a freshly partitioned and formatted USB flash drive with at least 8GBs. Leave the name of the flash drive at the system default, "Untitled." Do not change this name. Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Copy this command line after the prompt in the Terminal's window:
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed to the screen so be careful to enter it correctly. Press RETURN, again.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.

  • How can I reinstall a MacOSX clean installation?

Hi, I need to restore Mac OSX in my Macbook Air 13'' (mid 2012) to factory settings (clean). The laptop came with Lion pre-installed, but then I upgraded to Mountain Lion (10.8) and later to 10.8.2 with patches.
I've been reading around and tried the following options:
    (1) Installing Mountain Lion from USB:
I created a bootable USB (16GB) with an InstallESD.dmg image of Mountain Lion, but after restarting the laptop with the "Option" key hold and selecting the "Mac OSX" icon from the boot menu, I'm getting a prohibited icon and an eternal spinner.
    (2) "Reinstall OSX" option:
After restarting with the "Option" (or "Command"+R), selecting the "Recovery 10.8.2" icon from the boot menu and then selecting the "Reinstall OSX" option from the list, it connects to the Internet to "download" and after a while I get exactly the same setup I got... No clean installation as I guessed.
Is there any way to get a fresh copy of OSX (preferably installed from USB) in the laptop? Possibly by getting an specific InstallESD.dmg version I can install...
    Thanks a lot.

A "clean" installation is not possible unless you first erase the target volume.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How many F20-136 backup disks i need for clean OS installation?

    Hi,
I wish to clean off my laptop and start again due to a various amount of unwanted programs I've installed.
I've found a Product Recovery disk (one) does anyone know if there is supposed to be any others and if so what they are called?
Hopefully its just the one, I seem to remember another disk of somekind but cannot find it.
    Thanks
    Mike

If you want to clean off your notebook install OS using delivered recovery DVD. On this way your Qosmio will have factory settings again. Before you do this install Qosmioplayer at first using delivered Qosmioplayer recovery CD.

  • Clean hard drive

im trying to clean up my laptop to pass it on. i have already bought mac os x snow leopard upgrade. can i use this to restore everything? i want to wipe my computer clean, but can i use the upgrade to reinstall the programs for the new user? and how to i clean my mac?

1: Get all your data off first obviously, disconnect all other drives and media.
2: Stick the SL disk in the computer and reboot holding the c key down, you'll boot off the disk
3: First screen is the language, second screen is the installer, but wait, look under the Utilities menu for Disk Utility, launch that.
4: On the left you'll see a bunch of things, your hard drive makers name should be at the top left, select that.
5: Next click the Erase tab thing, click Security Erase > Zero All Data (leave the formatting HFS+ journaled) and then click Erase... come back in a hour or two. If you need more security pick the 7x erase, it will take more hours and really scrub the drive to military standards.
6: Once that is completed, quit and you back in the installer, install OS X SL onto the hard drive.
When it's finished you can time it when it starts to reboot and hold the power key down to shut it down hard.
When the next user goes to boot, they get the Welcome Screen and initial setup, so it's all ready.
All the OS X bundled programs are included on the SL upgrade disk except iLife, that's on the grey disks that came with your computer and to get that back you first have to install OS X from those disks first, then setup a initial account then use the SL disks to upgrade.
I'm assuming you don't have the grey disks, so that's why your installing from the white SL upgrade disks. (which really has the whole OS, not a upgrade)
If you do want iLife installed, then you need to install from the grey disks first, the proceedure is just about the same on 10.5, hold c and boot, use Disk Utility to Erase the drive, install 10.5, reboot, go through the initial setup, then insert the 10.6 disks (no c boot needed) and simply double click on the updater installer and it will handle the upgrade to 10.6
Usually the next person is going to wipe everything off anyway, but then again they may not. You'll have to pick some sort of nick name to enter into the user fields, and skip the registration process.
The important thing is to use the Security Option> Zero all Data (or 7 pass erase), this scrubs the entire drive of all YOUR DATA, so it can't be recovered using certain software.

  • HP ENVY 17 Notebook PC, CoolSense Nonsense -- Laptop Hot

Every since I upgraded to Windows 10, my HP Evy 17 (Model: E1P14AV) has been running hot. I'm not talking about the heat that of course would come from heavy use -- I'm talking about a laptop that's just sitting on a desk, doing nothing. It's hot enough that when you place the back side of your hand, you will react to it if you don't realize how hot it is. I contacted support about this, via Twitter, and was told that CoolSense is not compatible with Windows 10 and that to avoid issues, I should uninstall this and let BIOS pick up the default cooling for the laptop. I feel absolutely no air being pulled out of from the vent. I think the only saving grace and reason why the computer hasn't shutdown on me is becuase it is next to an air conditioner vent AND I have it on a stand that allows air flow underneath. This is what was said to me with regards to this: "If the fan does not get loud when the system gets hot, CoolSense is not working. It's job is to fluctuate RPMs based on heat 1/2" "inside the system. No Win 10 version of CoolSense is available. Try uninstalling existing version so BIOS runs fan. 2/2" Could someone please address this issue, as it seems that I am but one of MANY people with this problem. And yes, the vents are clean, the inside is clean, and the laptop is still covered under it's original warrenty -- so it's not even old. I have an i5 Asus and there are no issues with that computer whatsoever. One would think that with an issue this hot -- HP would have put some sort of statement instead of just not responding to folks on here.

Remove the battery and connect the power adapter. If the power\charging led is lit,  then the power adapter is working as it should.
Try a hard reset as follows:
    1) Remove the battery and unplug the DC power adapter.
    2) Press and hold the power button for more than fifteen seconds.
    3) Plug in the DC power adapter (leave the battery out for now)
    4) Press the power button
Please post your positive or negative results here in your thread.
Contact HP for warranty service if a hard reset shows no improvement.
The next time you come to the forum please identify your notebook with more than just the model series. The Envy 17 model series encompasses many notebooks.
