Re-delivering via iBooks Author

Hey guys. Quick question. I uploaded my first book, and was met with only two tickets regarding its content. Easy to fix, but I had to update the metadata (title), cover art, and book assets.
I followed the instructions found here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5213?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
but there is a part of those instructions that says "Most of the required fields will be filled in for you, but you will need to include text in the "What's New" field to update your book."
That didn't happen for me. I was met with a completely empty iTunes Producer window (all other info such as pricing, categories were removed).
Rather than fill everything back in, I took the existing .itmsp file from my previous upload, modified the book title, cover art, and assets, and re-delivered.
Was this an OK way to update the book? I'm noticing in the "Manage Your Books" section of iTunes Connect that it does register a 1.1 update (my original was of course 1.0) but none of the other stuff that I changed is reflected in that window yet.
I was wondering if anyone has any insight to this process. Thanks!

I had a similar problem.
I think  with the new iTunes Producer and  iBook requirements following the recent updates,  the  process is to ignore your previous itmsp upload file and use the Publish option in iBA.
I had to get the Vendor info  from my iTunes Connect account - leave the page open!
Use the  vendor ID to set your process going and carry on as before filling in the blanks. I used copy and paste from iTC for the description etc or presumably you can start again.
You will need to  re- fill every step  and when you get to  the assetts  you are asked if its the same book or a new version. Version No 1.1 is in place IF  you advise a new version.
I had a problem here  - it said it was the same book although I had added new images and  captions  and corrected typ0s and out of line stufff!
An error msg said I needed to include a preview.( mine is a free book  and previews were not required before)  I  opened iBA at the book, duplicated, saved as name-Preview and butchered lumps out to leave a fair variety over 15 pages. Back in the producer I added that preview and moved on to the book cover and screen shots. Everything was OK.
Now in iTC  I have a new orange dot with 1.1 Review Pending.
I assume that all version info is retained by vendor info and if  we do new versions and open it via the metadata options.. all will be in place as before the updates  and asking for version 1.2
I am not saying this is Apples  way - its  what I did to get the book updated and back in the store.
The original or previous version will stay in the store unless and intil a review is passed.

  • How can I transfer an iBook Author book via a PC?

    Hello
I designed an iBook via iBooks Author for a friend and want to send it to her to preview.  She has an iPad but only a PC computer.
How can I send her a proof so she can view it on her iPad?
    Thanks for your help.

Both open a Dropbox free account - upload your book to Dropbox and create a download link - email the link to  your friend - she can download  to the Dropbox on her iPad and when clicked to open -  it offeres an "Open in iBooks" - and  from iBooks it can  be seen.   If this is a beta version, I would  tell your friend to delete it before downloading the next version.  Its not needed and  can cause  problems with which  version  is seen.
    No solution for PC.

    Bonjour,

Les oeuvres publiées via iBooks author deviennent-elles tacitement la propriété d'Apple ? Je lance cette question suite à une rumeur. J'aimerais en avoir le coeur net. Merci pour vos contributions.

  • Delivering our iBook from outside U.S. - our story

    Hello Everyone,
Last year when starting our iBook project I was hungry for as much reliable information as possible. This community was very helpful and I hope to be able to help anyone interested in creating and delivering their iBook. So I hope to provide recommendations for people to help them.
My wife wrote a huge book on caring for Eclectus Parrots and I desinged the book using iBooks Author. We live outside the U.S. (Australia) and so we looked at several of the publishing houses to deliver our book for us. The 'process' of setting up tax ID's and handling all of that seemed daunting at the time - but it is not. I highly recommend that if you speak english well and can devote a day of phone calls, and about $100 you will do just fine and you will be 30% richer in the long run.
Setting up an iTunes Connect account is easy. Getting an EIN from the U.S. is also reletivly easy. For some reason we had trouble last year contacting the tax office, but once we got through they were very helpful and within about 30 minutes we had our EIN. Next, you need your ISBN which are easy to get and once you pay the fee with Thorpe-Bowker you get your ISBN immediately. As long as your local tax info is correct, finishing the iTunes Connect tax and banking account is simple.
When designing your iBook in IBA, make sure to follow the guidlines Apple provides. Be sure to have your copyright page in order (the page where you have your ISBN and your "all rights reserved" disclaimer).
Once you are ready to deliver, uploading your book with iTunes Producer was sketchy. I had to upload it a couple of times (800+mb). I have not yet used the new version of iTunes Producer so that may be better. We are selling our book, so it took about 3 days to show up in the iBookstore, but it did and it is incredibly exciting to see your hard work in the store.
If you are in the process of designing your book I highly recoomend you start planning your promotion process. Once it hits the iBookstore you will want people to know about it. It helps to have a small website setup. Start spreading the word through any relatable means possible.
Overall, the process seemed daunting to start with, but it really isn't as hard as it seems. It is so rewarding to see your efforts come to fruition and even more - to see such a positive response from people. I hope this helps in any way.

If readers see this... its not typical!   There  are many threds in the iBooks Author discussion group. Follow the information and use the phone number given......
    1-267-941-1099   USA IRS Telephone
    http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fss4.pdf
Calculat your time zone to call the  tax office around their 6.30pm.  The finish work at 7pm and most US people are home for dinner and not talking to tax officers.   It took me 10 minuutes and I am in Australia and purchased a $10 phone card and the  call cost be about $3.
UK applicants will also need an IBAN number from their  bank.

It is now not an Apple iBooks store requirement  - IF you  intend use  publishers other than Apples iBooks store, then you will need to comply with whatever that publisher/online book store requires.
Once you are ready to deliver, uploading your book with iTunes Producer was sketchy.
Sorry,  the  deliver process is easy and strait forward. prepare your  cover and  screen shots as they are requires in advance and  follow the   steps when iTunesProducer is opened by the "Publish" option in iBA.
If you have problems... its OK to stop the process.. clarify your issue and then   go back to start again.

Clearence and  arrival in the iBooks store  depends on how busy the review team are and can  take 1- 14 days  or longerdepending on how busy they are.
Overall, the process seemed daunting to start with, but it really isn't as hard as it seems.
This is true,  most people  do not take time to  gather the information and follow the correct  procedure.
Download teh assett guides   available from your iTunesConnect > Deliver your Content.
And also read the Help files in iBA.
As the poster and myself  illustrate...  everybody may have different results, the  best start is gathering all teh information  in the  various threads in the rerlated discussion groups and only post requests  for  advice if you get stuck...
Hope your books are a huge success....

  • Is there a way to import multiple questions at once into iBooks Author?

I have a list of 200 questions that I do not want to have to manually enter into iBooks Author review sections. Is there a way to batch upload them into a quiz?

Not yet, but that would help with the 217 I've been putting off
Perhaps a word to Apple via the Feedback menu would help...

  • Best workflow practices for iBooks Author re Enhanced Books?

    Hi
I have already published one Enhanced iBook in iTunes (The Wandering Gorillas) about my research in Rwanda.  I am now working on several others which will contain much more interactive media - photos and video.
I have vast amounts of unique photos and video - which would be useful for education purposes. So, 'where fools rush in...' I began to creat a new Enhanced iBook with lots of rich media.
However, I immediately started to have serious problems as the fille sizes grew very large - due to the many images and especially because iBooks Author creates versions etc.  Thanks to solutions provided on another post by Pondini & Linc Davis these problems have now been resolved and I have regained my 'lost' 100 GB - which had been gobbled up into the folder DocumentREvisions and private/var - you can read their solutions here
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22800295#22800295
Now, I wish to avoid the same problems - and try to get the best possible workflow to use when creating Enhanced iBooks - which contain lots of rich media files such as photos and video.
And so I am asking advice form anyone who has created such iBooks using iBooks author - or who is an expert in the finer workings of this software.
First -  Since Apple restrict the final iBook size to 2 Gb (and recommen smaller) I am considering creating my new iBook via separetly published chapters - so that each will be less than the max 2GB.  Obvioulsy these will have to have some 'stand alone' usefulness!
But, is this a good practice? has anyone done this? Is there any way for the separate chapters to be later combined - by the user - in order to have a complete, coherent book?
Second, re image file sizes.  For best quality on their new Retina Display iPads Apple suggest images of (No larger than ) 5000 x 5000.  I used this - and it produced image file sizes of 20 -30 MB.  I did some other trials - using images of 1024 x 1024 max - and on my iPad 2 (non Retina) my failing eyes could not see any difference?  Their file size was reduced to 2- 300 KB
Would the difference be  obvious on a Retina Display though?  Should we use the largest possible resolution (and file size) - but this has serious implications for the eventual overall iBook file size.
    What is the best compromise?
Third,   I have an iMac with an i7 250 Gb Flash drive and a separate 1TB hard drive.  All my 'media assets' are on the 1TB hard drive. The still images are exported from my various Aperture libraries - as jpegs of the size mentioned above (and into a newly created folder) .  Same with video - to Apple's recommendations for video replay on iPads.
So far I have kept and used the actual iBook Author file - for the new book - on the desktop of my 250GB i7 Flash Drive.
But, as I reported in the other post, this soon caused me huge problems as my disk space was rapidly 'eaten up' by duplicate versions etc.
I am now considering using a separate, 1Tb Firewire External drive for the actual iBook Author file (with backup copies onto another 1TB drive) I am certain this will be slower than using my internal flash drive - but is this 'good practice?'  Can it avoid the problems of all 'lost' storage space which caused me such hassles when using my flash drive?  Or, will this be minimised if I create separate iBooks from separate chapters?
And, delete uneccessary versions of course!
I do feel that this is an emerging issue which many will face - as we incorporate more and more rich media into our iBooks.
Any help or suggestions are gratefull received!

Thunderstorm played havoc with box from my ISP - and I am ruuning on a reserve and internet access flaky!
but, here goes with one reply.  Will have to wait later re tests for your other suggestions when weather calmed down
Re   'as Apple suggessted'   I should have said - no larger than 5000 x 5000 pixels (the 3240 was my vertical proportional dimension from choosing 5000 horizintal dimension)
this is from Ibooks Author help
Add and edit photos and other images
You can add a photo or other image (in a supported file type) to a page in your book by dragging the photo from theMedia Browser, the Finder, or another application.
After adding a photo to your book and positioning it on the page, you can use the tools in iBooks Author to mask (crop) the photo; change its brightness, contrast, and other image qualities; or erase its background.
Important:  When you export your book for distribution outside the iBookstore, images are automatically scaled to a width of 2048 pixels, which is optimized for iPad with Retina display. Readers can view these images on other iPad models, but the viewing experience might be slower. You can improve the viewing experience on iPad models without Retina display by using images no wider than 1024 pixels.
    ShowMask (crop) a photo
ShowChange a photo’s brightness, contrast, and other settings
ShowRemove the background or unwanted elements from a photo
Important:  Images can’t be larger than 25 megapixels (5000 x 5000 pixels) or 50 MB.

  • Ibooks author image size

    Hello ibooks author new users,
Any idea about the "good size" for a picture or photo in order to create a not too heavy ibook?
I am working on a new edition of a 19e century old book in French.
More than 20 chapters + 1 different picture for the first page of each chapter + 15 to 20 interactive images (old maps + engraving) within the book = 100 Mo for the book already... So it is scary or attractive ?
What about the other books already in store? Any limit?
Any "specialist" or studio around able to improve and to lighten my work at the end?
    Thanks for your help.
    Frederic

You can look at other books already in the store to give you a perspective how they act and feel.
Know that the max book size is 2GB. Also know that anything over 20mb must be downloaded via Wi-Fi or docked connection.
Create a sample, load it to a device and test drive...

  • EPub conversion of a book made by iBooks Author ?

To get a book made by iBooks Author, into the iBookstore, a ePub format has to be "available" when applying for a iTunes account
(Able to deliver book content in EPUB format, passing the latest version of EpubCheck)
Does iBooks Author convert to ePub ?
Or is this ePub format not required when using iBooks Author?

    Hello Niki,
It's all seems a bit confusing doesn't it? Here's my explanation ... Historically, to add a book to the Apple iBookstore, the file needed to be in epub format and pass a valadition check. So, we all learned how to do that. Now, Apple has added a new format, .ibook. To make books in this format all you do is create a book using iBook Author. There is no need to convert ibooks made in iBooks Author into epub. They meet Apple's specifications. In fact, ibook is a type of epub.
So now we all have to ways to get books into the Apple iBookstore: epub AND iBook Author.
    Clear as mud?

  • IBooks Author in footnote in pdf file

How to remove apple logo and iBooks Author in footnote of exported pdf file ?
    Thanks.

Pages is the name of Apple's word processor. Among other document formats, it can generate e-pub files and has been in use for some time as an authoring tool for books in the store. Pages does not watermark/brand PDF output.
iBA is new on the scene and purpose built to deliver specific output, including a hybrid e-pub format that Apple just created...

  • IBooks Author, PhoneGap, or Baker Framework? - That is the question

We've developing an interactive picture book in iBooks Author that primarily uses iBA as the shell, with most of the content and interactivity done in the HTML widget. I'm using Hype (http://tumultco.com/hype) to create the HTML5 & CSS, and the book looks great ... in Safari on my Mac. The book works fairly welll in iBooks on the iPad, but there are glitches and some images break up during animation sequences. Reading through these forums and elsewhere, it appears that iBA is inconsistent in how well it handles HTML5 animations, transitions, and audio.
We're keeping images optimized (total iBA file will wind up being only about 25MB), re-using graphics when possible, and trying not to do too many things at once on the screen, but I'm starting to wonder if iBA is the best solution for publishing a picture book. Perhaps having a large HTML widget causes iBA to choke?
The point of all this is that I've been pondering other solutions: i.e., PhoneGap (http://phonegap.com/) and the Baker Framework (http://bakerframework.com/). These allow development in HTML and publishing on the iPad. PhoneGap and Baker Framework both use Apple's X-Code tool to create an application shell, which is then submitted through Apple's Developer Program (not iBooks' iTunes Producer / iTunes Connect method). Although these tools create "apps," some of the apps are being published as books in the iBooks store.
My inquiring mind wants to know:
== Anyone have any experiences, pro or con, with PhoneGap or the Baker Framework?
== Any caveats to know if using iBooks Author with HTML to publish a picture book?
== Does Apple decide if something submitted as an "app" is really a "book" and therefore gets sold via the iBooks store? Or, vice versa?
== Is there any way to submit an X-Code built app to the iBooks store without going through the Developer Program?
== Does Apple allow selling an app in the iTunes store and the iBooks store?
Just trying to pick your brains about the best, easiest, most appropriate route to get our picture book published successfully.
Thanks for reading this far... JP

    ....PhoneGap or the Baker Framework?
Haven't and wouldn't waste time w/PG. Both mean working with Xcode in the end. I prefer Baker FWIW.
== Any caveats to know if using iBooks Author with HTML to publish a picture book?
HTML would need to be stripped and reformatted/styled for use w/iBA. iBA is iPad distribution only, so you won't be reaching iPhone or touch owners.
== Does Apple decide if something submitted as an "app" is really a "book" and therefore gets sold via the iBooks store? Or, vice versa?
Apps are apps....books are books - two different programs. You decide which to take your chances with. I have 'books' in both.
== Is there any way to submit an X-Code built app to the iBooks store without going through the Developer Program?
Totally different programs. You can't submit an 'app' as a book unless you make it into a book and then you need to use either the free or paid books programs having nothing to do with a developer account.
== Does Apple allow selling an app in the iTunes store and the iBooks store?
Again, two different programs, registrations and processes. If you can make the same subject matter apply to, and work with/thru both, go for it with two efforts, but it won't be one thing in two stores.
For me, you haven't really made it clear what you want to do in the end, so these responses are primarily cached in my guessing what that may be, exactly.
Your skills, budget, timeline, resources and content-in-hand may well define only one option regardless...or none - who knows.

  • IBooks Author: in exported file, one page loads very slowly...

iBooks Author: in exported file, one page loads very slowly and drags when scrolling through pages, almost stopping the scroll.  I have never seen this problem before with photo pages.  Normally they scroll just as smoothly as text pages.
I have tried rebuilding the page with more compressed files to no avail.  The image files used on the page are not any bigger than others I have used previously without any problem.
I have tried restarting my iBook.
I am using a template that I have modified quite a bit.  The templates currently offered by Apple and third parties are not even close to what I am looking for in terms of layout, so I have to rip almost everything out of the page and start with a blank page, most of the time.  I tried modyfying the layouts to save time and then saved as a new template.  Apple really needs to add a module to create your own template at the beginning of a project.  Or they need to create one very open template, without much on the pages.

I finally solved the problem by using an unmodified template. I would still like to know how my modifications to the other template caused the problem, but for now it remains a mystery.  Thanks for your ideas.
Next I will try modifying the template without saving it as a template (merely saving it as a file) to see if I can get away with my modifications.  Also I will make fewer modifications.
Slowly but surely I am learning this program by trial and error.  Each time I try a few formatting variations, output an iBooks file, and open it on my iPad.  I have probably done 20 of these tests, so far.  Once I work out every detail of the design and structure, I will build the final book.  I am lucky to have a beautiful PDF of the hardcover version, generously provided by my publisher.  This not only sets a high bar for me, but also allows me to use some of their design elements via screen capture.
iBooks Author has great potential, but I along way to go to get there. One feature I would really like to see in the next update: the ability to add a hidden caption to a photo.  The reader would tap the image and the caption would appear. Tap again and it disappears.

  • Keynote slides with video - not linking in Ibooks Author

    Hi
I have a problem with linking Keynote slides containing videos in Ibooks author. I am using the latest version of both programs on Yosemity (6.5.2 keynote, Ibooks Author 2.2 )
The keynotes is set up with ‘Links Only’ and it works perfectly in Keynote. In Ibooks author the ‘link only’ is not working and the slides just progresses to next one. Like the Presentation type was set to normal, whether or not I press the link or outside the link. The exact same keynote slides without the video doesn’t have this problem and links perfectly in Ibooks Author. The result is the same testing the Ibook directly on the Mac or on the Ipad Air (8.1.2)
To make sure about the video types I tried a number of different ones (different Mac/Ipad video conversion programs) all with the same result. The result is also the same whether it plays ‘on page’ or ‘full-screen’ in the Ibook. The videos all plays perfectly but the links are not working.
Saving the keynote to 09 seemed to solve the problem. I am new to Ibooks author …. And the whole Mac environment. But I am thinking it’s supposed to work without having to do this????
The same happened when I tested a linked keynote example from Lynda.com. ‘Ibooks essential training’.  Only in the 09 version it was working with the links, when the slides had videos. This example was off course also created in an earlier Keynote version.
    Niles , Denmark

This is a problem that I've reported both here and via bugreport.apple.com. However, I don't think that it has to do with screen resolution (retina/non-retina). Rather, I think it has to do with setting the widget to "full screen" where transport controls cannot be used and selecting a "Links Only" presentation.
I used simple forward and back arrows set (Control-click on object) to go to next slide or previous slide. What I found was that while this works as designed when played back in Keynote (OS X or iOS) but not in the Keynote widget. The links only  setting and these hyperlinks are totally ignored in the Keynote widget. Tapping anywhere went to the next slide. Tapping on the back arrow also went to the next slide,

  • Ibooks author, office 2011 for mac, os x 10.8 conflicts?

Has anyone ibooks author, office 2011 mac and os x 10.8 running and that causes conflicts within ibooks author?
    What happens ist this:
I changed to a new MacBook Pro Retina and emigrated everything from my older notebook to the new one via firewire. iBooks author works still fine on the older MacBook Pro. On the new one even the templates in iBooks author are not displayed correctly, it is a complete chaos.
The software difference between the two notebooks is:
old one: os x 10.7, office mac 2008
new one os x 10.8, office mac 2011
I set up a new user with admin-rights for a test on the new MacBook pro, startet iBooks author and it worked just fine - back to my old user it didn´t work properly --> I think it must be within the present user account. Does anyone know if office 2011 mac might have written something there?

  • IBooks Author app for iPad?

Is iBooks Author available as an app for iPad or only for laptop/desktop?

There are a number of apps available from the Apple app store which enable eBooks to be created on an iPad. They are obviously not as interactive or as functional as iBA, although Book Creator which I have used creates ePub files.
Unlike iBA, most of the content needs to be prepared outside the app and inserted. There are quite a few such applications so you would need to evaluate each against your needs.
Pages is available for iPads so I assume that it will produce ePubs as it does on Macs.
If your ambitions for creating eBooks to distribute via the iBookstore, iBA is the best application currently available although InDesign seems to be the choice of those creating "novels" with minimal illustration.
I do not have any connection in any way with any of the apps other than as a user.

  • Ibooks author file not accepted by itunes producer

I have completed a book with an Ibooks author file size of 830MB; it is not being accepted by itunes Producer for upload. Do I need to export it to IBooks format? I did this export but the resulting file is just 77MB. I did not try to upload it via Itunes Producer as it seems to small to be correct. ????????

Thanks this helped but not enough. I was trying to feed the I books author file directly. So, i went to File/publish and created a file labeled ITMSP. Then went back to the Publisher wizard. I was unable to load the ITMSP file but the Publication window in ITUNES Producer has the Ibook file I exported from IBA in it. I continued through the wizzard but chose not enter a target audience. When I got to the end and clicked on the button to send to Apple it went through a verification process and flagged the lack of target audience. So I went back and entered 13 and up. But the same error keeps occuring and I can not proceed. Any ideas on the following
    1. How I clear the error message now that I have entered the right data
2.Is the Ibooks export the file that should show in the produce window, or should it be the ITMSP file that wont load there?
