Re-digitizing footage into FCP

I am attempting to re-ditigize footage into my system and the time code seems to be offset by approximately 5 seconds. This has been noticed across several different tape sources that vary in length. I need to get this resolved as soon I will be restriping my Xserve as well as digitizing same footage (using same project) on another system. Thoughts? Footage appears to be drop frame although t.c. in digitized bin seems to be non-drop (per colons - hard to see)

They deck only displays 30 frame code...even though it might be 60 frame.

DVCam decks should automatically lock onto the control track and playback OK, it's normally not the case the other way around with regular DV decks that don't pick up on the fact it's DVCam material and play back slowly and with picture and sound breakup.

  • Reposting this - bringing dvd footage into FCP - progressive scan

I occasionally have clients that need me to bring footage into their projects from a dvd or vhs. I'm looking into getting something that can do both NTSC & PAL and I've come across this product:
    Sharp DV-NC80
    6-Head Hi-Fi Stereo VHS/S-VHS VCR & DVD, CD-R, V-CD Combo Player - Multi System, Multi Zone
My only dilemma is that the dvd player does not have progressive scan. Can anyone let me know if that should matter or not and what progressive scan is for? (I read the jagged edge article, but does progressive scan affect how FCP digitizes dvd material as well?) Thank you.

Unless you are bringing the material in via a capture card, you can't take advantage of the 480p scanrate anyway...

  • Getting DVD footage into FCP

I've got a DVD-R with my showreel burned on to it. I can play this on my Mac or on a DVD player etc but have not been able to work out how to get this footage onto my FCP in order to edit it further. If anyone can help, I would be very grateful.
    Cheers

Consider not taking the original footage back into FCP.
Demux the .vob's using StreamClip, to their native .m2v video and whatever audio format was used, and create a new DVD SP project using those ready to burn assets.
In the track view, you can trim the already encoded assets - you may need to re-render the audio, or work with audio in aiff.
Prepare new footage only in fcp, and encode in sections to new .m2v mpegs. Then, insert the newly encoded footage in with the originally encoded footage, using DVD SP as a rudimentary splice editor, in its track view. It is not frame accurate - you not be able to cut exactly where you would like to.
It will be harder this way, but, you won't loose any quality over the original DVD, becasue you never decode and re-encode the original MPEG's.
If this is too limiting, or difficult, then decode the lot and work in FCP - there will be a quality hit for decode / re-encode as David rightly says.

  • Trying to import SxS footage into FCP 7

A client of mine gave me a mini G-Drive with a BPAV file of footage from SxS. I downloaded ClipBrowser and got that to work. Then I hunted for the raw footage to import into my system. All I can find is MPeg4s. But they don't preview in Finder and they don't import into FCP. Does it matter that the client is PC based? He formatted the drive FAT 32. I don't have a problem reading the drive. As I said, Clipbrowser works. What am I missing?

Here's what I found that helped me and will hopefully help others in the future. I could not find mention of this in any documentation (very thin on clipbrowser and BPAV) but did find mention of it in an internet search which turned up a Creative COW thread. Here's what I did.
Choose Import XDCAM in FCP. XDCAM Transfer opens up. Go to top menu row and select ADD SOURCE. Direct your choice to the BPAV file in the top tier of your ClipBrowser files. That opens up a visual directory of the clips. Choose each one you want and hit IMPORT at the bottom of the screen. They will then show up in your FCP browser as quicktime files. Then you are are ready to edit as you would normally.
    Hope that helps.

  • Capturing footage into FCP - Which settings to choose?

    Hi there
I have filmed something in 4:3 which will be for the web and I am unsure of what settings I should capture the footage in. Whether it should be DV PAL, DV PAL Anamorphic (which my Final Cut is set to anyway) or whether I need to change it to DAV PAL 4:3, or maybe it doesnt matter? Where abouts do I find these settings in the menu?
I am fairly new to Final Cut, so please excuse my ignorance!
    Thank you for your help

    Hi there,
    Welcome to the discussion area.
The ratio of your video is already telling you what you are dealing with, however,
I think a couple of links will help you in understanding the basics:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anamorphic
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/understanding_169.html
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/project_setup_fcp6balis.html
Remember that in Easy Setup (FCP main menu>FCP>Easy setup) you specify the type of project
    you will be dealing with.
Read the manual too (Main menu>help>User manual then type keywords at will).

  • Trouble importing HDV mini DV footage from my Sony HVR Z7U into FCP 6.0.6

Cannot import HDV mini DV footage from my HVR Z7U camcorder into Final Cut Pro
I can Import the footage as an NTSC 720x480 signal.
One consistent answer is to make sure that in camcorders menu settings that the IN/OUT REC - iLINK SET is set to off.
No Luck, no communication with FCP in that mode.
That being said when cameras ilink is on I can import 740/480 NTSC video, not HDV.
    Here’s where I’m at now
The video was shot in 1080i 30p onmini DV.  With my Sony HVR Z7U Ican only import the video into FCP as a NTSC 720x480 signal. It looks great butnot in HDV?
I believe I have tried most every setting in my FCP audio video settings to import the HD footage into FCP. FCPseems to only recognize the camcorder in the NTSC mode.
Example - In  FCP  Audio /Video Settings
    Sequence Preset - HDV 108030p
    Capture Preset    - HDV
Device Control     - HDV FireWire Basic
Video Playback   - Only gives none or NTSC choices(I chose Apple FireWire)
With the setting above and Sony’s  ilink off- window alert reads…
“Device is not connected or the capture preset is not set up correctly. You may still log offline clips. This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device.” The camcorder viewer reads the digital footage as 1080i 30p. So it’s not shot in DV footage.
With the iLink on - I get the same window alert.  Unless I capture in NTSC
For me FCP will only log and capture the footage when the Capture and Device Control Presets are set to a NTSC format and the camcorder ilink is on. Hence an NTSC 720x480 signal is imported. Not HDV?
Come on, I know this a common problem and I must be missing something very simple. Please Help! Many thanks.

Someone mentioned using log and transfer. I use this with all my Compact Flash HD videos. I have found no info for importing HDV from mini DV in log and transfer with a (my) camcorder.

Gary, this is the Final Cut Pro X forum.  You might try the other forum for FCP. Still, I have the Z5U Sony which is nearly identical to your camera except for the zoom as I recall.  I think we have the same menu system.  I see to recall there is a menu option that sets the output file format.  Also you can set it to record in SD as well as I recall.  I read my files in from tape to FCP X easily ... in high def.  Best wishes.

  • Problem importing footage from Canon XF305 into fcp

I have footage from a card having recorded on a Canon XF305. I literally dragged and dropped card onto my desktop making sure not to change any file names. I am now trying to import this footage from my desktop into fcp. I have downloaded the canon fcp plugin but everytime I try to import the footage using the canon plugin preferences I get an error message which reads... "AA0229" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media. Can anyone help me??

    Hi there,
I've had no joy with this. Have tried everything. Just can't get footage into fcp any way I try. I have downloaded the plugin but I still get the same error message. "AA0229" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.
My work flow is as follows.
Open final cut pro. Go to log and transfer. Go to preferences within the log and transfer window and click on Canon XF plugin. Then go to import. Click on file on my desktop which is labeled as CLIPS001. Then error message comes up.
Memory card was dropped directly onto my laptop and onto a back up drive without changing any file names. Was thinking this would be straight forward.
Any help will be hugely appreciated. Am I missing something simple?

  • How do I import Canon HD footage shot @ 30 fps into FCP?

Greetings all -- have Canon HD footage shot at 30 fps, not realizing Sony equipment can't "read" it and when I tried hooking the camera directly up to the computer to import the footage into FCP, FCP does not recognize the camera (No Communication). Anyone who can help with what settings I should use, etc.? I would be most grateful! Thank you....

Use HDV FireWire Basic as a device control setting in FCP.. might also help to read this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302407

  • Tips for quick logging of digitalized footage

I just recently came over to final cut pro express from avid express, which used "locators" as a quick and convenient way to mark selected clips through a color coded dot system. Is there an equally quick way I can mark or code selected clips as I play back my digitalized footage in FCP Express? I need to quickly find a way to locate highlights in basketball games.

Thanks. Markers come close to Avid's Locators. Prob is that every time I open up Edit Marker window my extended clip freezes. I can no longer play the whole clip. What's up with that?
    ManorVail
Look into Markers. Unfortunately I'm pretty mac-less
at the mo' so I can't help you with keyboard commands
    or menus.
However, they should do the trick. I think even allow
comments and when marking a long clip you can easily
flick through it by going to the next marker,
    previous marker, etc.
You can also use extended markers to mark a length of
time, not just a point in time. These can be useful
for making sub-clips of the longer clip.
Sorry, I can't be of more help, but that should give
    you something to search for.
    A few general tips:
    1) The usual response with software forums is to RTM,
not the case here as a lot of the FCE manual is
incorrect and refers to features only found it it's
    big brother FCP
    2) therefore a good book would be a better
    alternative. Many recommendations here

  • Importing mpg files into FCP

A client brought me their external HD, and I am seeking to import footage into FCP. The video comes across fine, but their is no audio...what am I missing here?

You can't work with MPEG files in FCP. Yours also have multiplexed audio which is why you can't hear them.
You need to convert the files with [MPEG Streamclip|http://www.squared5.com]
See my MPEG Streamclip tutorials: [Part One|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2059475&tstart=0] and [Part Two|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2070861&tstart=0]

  • P2 Footage and FCP X

I received some P2 footage (720PN), most of which I was unable to import into FCP 6.0.6 using Log & Transfer so I decided that this might be a great time to upgrade to FCP X.  So I did, but FCP X had the same problem -- about half of the files would not import properly.  All of the files played fine using P2CMS, and in the end I was able to use P2ProLog to transcode everything to Pro Res and then edit in FCP X.
    1) Shouldn't I be able to import any P2 footage into FCP X?
    2) Could the "720PN" be the issue?

I had all of the files transferred from the camera to a hard drive, and I did use import from camera (even though it's on a drive).  Some of the files work and some didn't.  I also checked that there were no weird file names or delete clips -- both of which can cause problems.

  • Transfering dvd footage to FCP

Hi, Is it possible to transfer dvd footage into FCP for editing.
    Thanks,
    Maz

    1. Download and install MPEG Streamclip
    2. Open VTS011.VOB (and choose Open all files) in MPEG Streamclip
    3. Set your in/out points (hit the letter "i" where you want the clip to start, and the letter "o" where you want the clip to stop)
    4. Select the Edit menu and choose Trim
    5. Choose File -> Export to QuickTime (select a video format suited for editing)
As others have already mentioned, this will not work on copy protected DVDs.
