Re: dmidecode reports more PCI slots than available in MSI B85M-G43 motherboard

Odd then that it shows correct info for those slots on my MB and not yours.

  • Hyper-V guest OS task manager reports more memory used than expected

I have a Hyper-V node with 32 GB of system memory and 6 cores (12 logical processors with hyperthreading) running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter.  On this node I have a virtual machine with 4 GB of system memory and two logical processors running Windows
    Server 2008 R2 Standard.
On the virtual machine, Task Manager show that 3.62 GB of memory are being used and 109 MB are free.  This is despite the fact that nothing is installed or running on the vm except the operating system.  The memory usage for all processes for all
users as reported by Task Manager is under 100 MB.
Any ideas on what can be causing such a huge discrepancy between the memory usage reported by Task Manager and reality?  The host OS reports 9.8 GB out of 32 GB memory usage (expected since several VMs are running on the host), but I would not think
that the guest OS would be pegged.

Busy two weeks.  Sorry I didn't respond sooner.
I should clarify that I was not running Task Manager on the host machine, but rather on the guest OS.  Task manager on the VM was reporting incorrect memory usage for the VM.  Task Manager on the host machine was reporting correct information for
    the host.
I would expect that a guest OS should have accurate metrics for its own memory usage as this is usually the case with visualization solutions (Sun VirtualBox, Citrix, VMWare).  Interestingly, although TaskManager on the guest OS is reporting incorrect
(3.62 GB) memory usage, the Hyper-V Manager shows reasonable and likely correct (574 MB) memory usage.  Hyper-V Manager shows 598 MB of "Assigned Memory" and 574 MB of "Memory Demand", whereas TaskManager on the guest OS shows 3.62 GB of memory used.
I would have expected Task Manager on the guest OS to show 4 GB available, 574 MB used, about 3.4 GB free.

  • Does the MSI Z68-G43 G3 support 8/8 PCIe 2.0 lanes (for SLI/CF)

    Hello,
    The MSI webpage states
    Quote
        • 1 PCI Express gen3 x16 slot, 1 PCI Express gen2 x16 slot
        • 2 PCI Express gen2 x1 slots
        • 3 PCI slots, support 3.3V/ 5V PCI bus Interface
for the MSI Z68-G43 G3. It doesn't say whether the board can run the 16 PCIE 2.0 Lanes in 8/8 configuration. My current (Gigabyte P67A-D3-B3) board can only do 16/4, so I am considerung moving to this board for Crossfire. Does anyone know if 8/8 2.0 is possible with this board and a Sandy Bridge CPU?

    PCI-E Gen : Gen3 (1x16), Gen2 (1x4)
    Thanks for the help, Remus!
I am now looking to get a Z77A-GD55 instead. It is specified as PCI-E Gen : Gen3 (16, 16), Gen2(4) so it should be fine (Sandy Bridge only reduces it to Gen2 (16, 16) instead of Gen3 (16, 16), right?).
    They are somewhat hard to find, though, unlike the Z68A-GD65-G3 with Gen3 (16/0, 8/8) and Z68A-GD80-G3 with Gen3 (16/0, 8/8), Gen2 (1x4) . So I'll see what I can get.

  • Refresh portlet report more frequently than once per hour

When you publish a report from discoverer in the portal, you can tell it to automatically refresh, but the most frequent refresh it allows is once per hour. Is there some way I can refresh a report more frequently than that? Can I use the scheduled workbook functionality to achieve this, since in there you can schedule it to run as frequently as once per minute.
    I'm using Discoverer 10.1.2.
    Thanks
    -Nissim

    These are two different schedulers...
We are considering changing the UI to let the users specify a schedule frequency more frequent than once an hour. But that is in a future, as yet undecided release.
For the time being, you can resort to hacks to refresh Discoverer portlers more frequently than an hour. Some information on the same is available on Metalink. I shall see if I can publish in the next few days a blog post on how to do that. Of course you have to realize that something like this is not encouraged or supported.

  • Adding more devices to PCI slots

    Hi all,
My G4 AGP specs tells me my Mac's 3 PCI slots are 64bit, 33mhz. I have two slots available and one slot I added a 4port USB card working great. Just curious but what exactly is 64bit, 33mhz? What does it mean? What can I add to these slots besides another USB card, firewire card, and/or external HDD?
    Thanks
    Web dude

    Hi-
64 bit refers the the memory addressing architecture of the PCI bus. It is of consequence when choosing a PCI card not only for compatibility, but also for enhanced performance characteristics of 64 bit architecture. What the 64 bit PCI bus allows, is sequential read, write, and invalidate (clear)commands to occur in a single operation. This, of course, translates to performance.
33MHz is the clock frequency of the bus, or, more commonly thought of as, the speed of data transfer through the bus. This, when combined with the memory addressing architecture, yields the data rate of the bus.
    The theoretical limits of the PCI bus translates to 264 MB/s for 64-bit @ 33MHz or 132 MB/s for 32-bit @ 33MHz.
The 64 bit slots are backwards compatible to 32 bit architecture as well.
PCI cards can have many different duties. External interface bridges such as USB 2.0, FW 400, FW 800 and eSATA are common for PCI expansion.
Hard drive controller cards for both ATA and SATA drives are also common.
Other types of controllers such as SCSI and hardware RAID are available.
Sound cards are also common for PCI expansion.
Video capture, ethernet, wireless, TV tuners, modems, even controllers with a hard drive mounted to the PCI card board are some of the expansion devices that are available.

  • Time Machine drive reporting more and more disk space available

OK, so I've been using Time Machine since 28-OCT-2007 and all my backups are present. I have watched my TMDrive (Buffalo 500GB Fire Wire) report as little as 20GB available and slowly over the past 30 or so days report 205.42 GB now available. Any sizable downloading I do is pointed at another external HDD and that is listed in the Do NOt Backup list. I understand how hourly and daily works, but to see such drastic swing in available disk space seems a bit odd. Has anyone else seen this?
    Message was edited by: brenodo

    Brenodo,
As backups are thinned, you will see a reduction in the amount of space used on the TM drive. This is entirely normal. Keep in mind that TM is designed to maintain a "restorable" copy of your system, and all of your user files, past and present. This represents a discreet amount of data which is only added to in small increments, really... as you say, any large downloads are going to a dedicated external.
While TM might temporarily use much more disk space to manage its backups, the thinning process will eventually weed out everything that is unnecessary, as you are now seeing. I wouldn't be surprised if you begin to see the free space being used again, at some point, and the cycle will begin anew.

  • More answered calls than offered calls in Webview report.

    Hi all,
I encounterd a strange thing in Webview.
How can it be that in an half hour intervall there are more answered calls than offered. ( See attachment)
    Thanks for your explanations :-)
    Greetings Chris

The additional call might have been offered in the previous half hour and might have been completed in the current half hour. Thus, there will always be a difference in the offered and answered calls.
In the attachment, the previous half hour period had 6 offered, however only 5 answered. The 6th call got completed in the duration from 10AM to 10.30AM, hence shown as completed task in the 10AM half hour report.
You can verify and confirm this by using database query on the t_Termination_Call_Detail. Check for the number of calls offered from 9.30 to 10AM and check the start time and end time of the calls, you will get a clear picture.

  • PCIE Slot stuck at 1x

    Hardware involved:
MSI Z77 Mpower latest official Bios
    OCZ Vertex 4 250GB
WD Black Caviar (Default gaming HD)
8 GB Mushkin DDR 3 xmp profile 1600
    MSI R9 290X Lightning 14.6 Catalyst
    Windows 8.1
I have removed all other hardware from my rig, no other drives, soundcard etc.
So, this is my current problem. It seems that for no reason I can explain, my first PCIE slot is stuck at 1x. I hadn't played any games for a while so with the release of Wolfenstein and Watchdogs I thought I would give them a go. The performance was just  horrific. After playing with any and all available settings I set steam up on my wife's desktop (i5 2500k Stock and a GTX 760, 8 GB DD3 1600 all at stock) and it was staggeringly better than mine on the same monitor at 1080p with exactly the same settings.
After driver reinstalls, a complete format (Windows 8.1), a bios reflash I ran GPU Z latest version. Now the PCI Bus interface shows PCI-E 3.0 x16@ 1.1.1. I ran in included stress test, no change. I must state that up until a few days ago my rig has worked fine. There has been no change to software or hardware, no alterations in bios etc.
I then tried the card in the second slot on the mobo and GPU Z reported PCI-E 3.0 x16@ 8.2 when running the stress test.
So, I stripped my rig, dug out a Z67 mobo I have, used the same HD's, same GFX card, same PSU all on a test bench, installed 8.1 again and everything worked perfectly. GPU Z reported PCI-E 3.0 x16@ 16.2 when using a stress test (included stress test and furmark and Heaven). I tested Wolfenstein and Watchdogs and no more 15 - 25 fps. Stripped the test rig, rebuilt my Z77 mpower on the test rig with the same hardware, another fresh install and still unbearable video performance and GPU Z still reports stuck at 1x.
I'm at a loss, had to rebuild with the Z67 mobo for now which is fine as a temporary measure.
Anyone make any suggestions? I have also tried reverting back to an old bios with no change, as of this morning I have tried a different PSU, SSD, an Nvidia GTX 760, new Sata cables etc, no change. My Z77 Mpower just wont let my card run as its supposed to.
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

check in the CPU socket for any bent pins as that is sounding like to me that there is one or 2 bent there as the second slot feeds off the last 8 lanes of the first X16 so there is an issue in the first 2 or 3 on the first ones lanes that is preventing a full x16 to take effect! (could try some compressed air in the slot encase one of the pins on the X16 connection is dirty and is stopping it taking effect) could also check the slot itself to make sure that the connectors in there are all intact and non are bent or broken off!

The manual for his board is a bit confusing on this matter.
Actually, it isn't.  It (only) mentions the two possible operating modes:  (x16/x0 and x8/x8 (bifurcated mode)).  If you look at the specifications on the product page, the same is true:
    http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=prodmbspec&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=1846
    Quote
    PCI-E Gen     Gen2 (1x16, 1x8)
However, what the board specifications and the manual state is of secondary importance (even though there is nothing wrong with the information).  The PCI-Express interface is provided by the processor alone and it is the design of the CPU that desides about the possible ways of lane assignment.
We had this discussion before, so let me just quote the relevant information I already posted there:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=137305.msg1036301#msg1036301

However, what you guys actually have to look at are what Intel has to say about this in the Processor Specifications:
    http://download.intel.com/design/processor/datashts/322164.pdf
Have a look at page 27: "PCI Express* Bifurcated Mode":
    Quote
When bifurcated, the signals which had previously been assigned to lanes 15:8 of the
single x16 Primary port are reassigned to lanes 7:0 of the x8 Secondary port.
The two PCI-Express Ports are tied directly to the processor.  Of course, both are x16 ports in size, but not in terms of bandwidth.  From the point of view of the processor, the primary port is a true x16 port (size & bandwidth).  However, the secondary port is only a x8 port (bandwidth), that is why Intel labels it as "x8 Secondary port".  There is no way the secondary port will ever be able to get more than x8 lanes assigned to it.
This has nothing to do with the mainboard, but with how the CPU manages the bifurcation of the PCI-E lanes.  There are only 16 lines of which only 8 can be reassigned to the secondary port.
The CPU's PCI-Express switching logic is not designed to re-assign all x16 lanes to the secondary port.  There is only one switch available:  x16/x0 or x8/x8.  No other operating modes are possible.  That means, whenever there is a device in the secondary port, it will get x8 lanes or none at all.
    Quote
nothing was mentioned about the CPU limitation.
The CPU hosts the PCI-Express controller.  That means the whole lane assignment logic (naturally) depends primarely on the CPU.
    Quote
It would be interesting to see & verify what the bandwidth actually reads when just one card is placed in the PCI-E5 slot only.
It will get x8 lanes assigned to it, not one more.
    Quote
We know it certainly can't be 'x0' with one card, but if not using two cards, the 'Auto Arrange' to force x8 in the PCI-E5 slot runs x8 regardless?
    Yep.
    Quote
The CPU as you mentioned Jack, is the only limiting factor then? Otherwise the board itself could run the PCI-E5 at x16?
The CPU is the deciding factor here.  I would not call it a "limiting" factor.  The board itself cannot to anything in this matter because its chipset does not provide a PCI-E interface to begin with (well, at least not the kind we need).

  • Dm4 mini-PCIe slot -- SSD or Bluetooth?

I purchased a Pavilion dm4 1173cl from Costco in November.  I would like to add a small SSD to the mini-PCIe slot (designated for use by WWAN module in service manual) to use for source-code and SQL Server databases (both presenting a usage patterns of high random-IO, which benefit from SSD).
I would be keeping the original 500GB 7K drive as boot/os and general app installation, only placing items that would benefit my development experience on the SSD.  In other words Boot-time and application launch performance are fine from the spinning drive, I just want to speed up a few specific (high random-IO) things by using an SSD.
in particular, I'm looking at the 80GB Intel mini-PCIe SSD (available at NewEgg by searching for SSDMAEMC080G2C1).
Also curious if I could put a bluetooth module in that same slot (obviously not at the same time as the SSD)?  I'm currently using an external bluetooth dongle, but would rather it were internal if I can't use that space for an SSD.
    Any info appreciated.

Ok, finally found some more info about this.  Turns out mini-PCIe slots are anything but standard.  Instead, mini-PCIe is a reference to a physical slot configuration, but manufacturers are taking great liberties with which of the pins they actually wire-up.    mSATA (which the above-linked Intel SSD utilizes) is one such customization of the mini-PCIe slot, others being USB, PATA (parallel ATA/IDE hard-drive), and who knows how many others... all overloading the use of the 8+18 mini-PCIe connector.
Since this slot is desgnated for use with WWAN adapter, I'm doubtful it's configured as mSATA to enable use of an SSD... Which presents another interesting issue... since the dm4 1173cl model didn't come with the WWAN module, they didn't even bother soldering in the slot (just as they don't include the SIM card reader nor WWAN antennae in the screen housing).  There are solder contacts on the board, but no card connector. I should have cracked the case open before spending time researching this, rather than relying on pictures from the service manual which covers models that do include the WWAN module.
