Here is a good one for ya...
I already installed Lion on my Mac through the Mac App Store. Once Lion is finished installing, it deletes the "Install Mac OS X Lion" file that is downloaded to your Applications folder prior to installation.
Why would I like to re-download? Simple. I want to open the package contents of the install file, snag the .pkg, and make Lion bootable/recoverable. This way I have a recovery disc, and I don't have to pay $69 for Apple's bogus solution coming out next month. This is possible, but the problem is that Lion deletes the download, and once you have Lion installed, the Mac App Store refuses to let you redownload it. Any suggestions as to how to get around this?

Yes I tried that - I can't get the app store to redownload - it states there is a newer version and then fails. i can't find what it wants me to trash...

Need OS X Install download to make boot disk

After a miserable last few days trying to get Yosemite working, yesterday went from bad to worse. It was taking (by my iPhone stopwatch) 5-8+ MINUTES to do anything. By anything I mean anything - logging on, choosing anything, scrolling, etc. Everything!!! I tried to create a system recovery disk on my flash drive for Yosemite so I could just erase the disk and start over (major frustrating cataclysmic ordeal) but after getting the desktop open (about 30 minutes), it took me 8+ to open the application folder, 10+ minutes to scroll down to the Utilities folder, which then would not open. It took me almost an hour to try and get the Application folder in Finder list mode and then also could not open the Utilities folder (blank list). So I bit the bullet and used Time Machine to restore my entire system (erase the hard drive, etc.) and which reinstalled Mavericks from a couple of weeks ago. (I had made another Time Machine backup just before I started the download and install of Yosemite but it was not on my Time Machine drive????).
I would now like to create an emergency boot drive on my Flashplayer for Mavericks (NOT Yosemite). I cannot find where to download the Install app. Where can I find it? P.S. I am getting more and more frustrated with any and all OS "upgrades" after my iPhone and now MacBook Pro fiascos, but I'll rant about that another time. Thanks for any help.

To do what you want requires that you save the installer before installing, because after installation the installer deletes itself automatically. Once you do the installation, App Store will usually not let you re-download it as long as it is already installed on your computer. To re-download would require your to downgrade to an earlier version of OS X. If you downloaded Mavericks or a prior version of OS X, then you may be able to re-download it under the Purchases page in App Store.
What you could do is to boot to your Recovery HD and install Mavericks onto your flash drive:
Restart the computer and at the chime press and hold down the COMMAND+R keys. Release them after the spinning wheel appears below the Apple logo. When the Utilities Menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button.
1. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
2. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
3. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
5. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
When the above is completed quit Disk Utility and return to the Utilities Menu. Click on the Reinstall OS X option then click on the Continue button. When the window appears with a disk icon in it click on the See all disks link below it. Locate the flash drive volume and select it. Click on the Install button. This will install a bare version of Mavericks that you can use to boot your computer. To reinstall OS X from this flash drive you only need to clone it to the computer's drive:
Clone Yosemite, Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
     1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
         button.
     2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
     3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
     4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
         to the Destination entry field.
     5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
         the Source entry field.
     6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

How to make boot disk for MacBook Pro with Mavericks pre-installed

I recently bought a new 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display, which came pre-installed with Mavericks (10.9.0). I want to make a bootable USB disk of the system software, and have successfly used DiskMaker X (formerly Lion DiskMaker) to make the USB boot disks for Lion and Mountain Lion. In those cases, however, I was running earlier versions of the OSX, and downloaded the new OSX version -- Lion and Mountain Lion -- from the App Store in order to make to make the disk. In this case, however, Mavericks was pre-installed, and I was unable to download it from the App Store (an alert said that it couldn't be installed on this computer... presumably because it was already installed). I would apprecite any suggestions as to how I can create the boot disk without the ability to download Mavericks. Thanks very much for any help anyone can provide.

Open App Store and locate the full installer download file (5.29 GBs) for 10.9.1. Download to your computer.
Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed to the screen so be careful to enter it correctly. Press RETURN, again.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.

Unable to Log and Capture AND make FCP a boot disk

I am unable to go into Log and Capture mode in FCP 4. I can capture from firewire using I movie just fine so I know the sytem works. The minute I open Log and Capture from within FCP (with the JVC Mini-DV camera hooked up thru Firewire), it crashes. Help. I upgraded from FCP 3 to FCP 4 a couple years ago and it hasn't worked right since. Would re-installing the FCP 4 upgrade work? Also, my system works very sluggish. Please explain to me how I would make the veersion of FCP 4 my boot disk. I realize that I can't have the FCP 4 application and the media on the same drive but is there a way to partition one of my drives and make FCP one of the startup disks? Hope this isn't too confusing. Thanks.

First off, FCP 4 was darn unstable. FCP 4.5 is a free upgrade and is STILL the most stable version out there. FCP 5 is getting there.
Secondly, try:
Shane's Stock Tip Mantra: If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the appropriate version of FCP Rescue at http://fcprescue.andersholck.com/ and run it.
2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
As for partitioning the hard drive, that isn't necessary. Hasn't been since FCP 3.

I've downloaded Lion. I have a boot disk. Can I use it to install on another machine?

I downloaded Lion from the Mac App store and it's working 100%. Love it.
After downloading and before installing, I copied the installESD.dmg (I think that's the correct filename) to a DVD (as per all the instructions out there to create a boot disc). I did NOT copy the entire "Install Lion App" to the DVD.
My question is: if a friend buys lion from the app and then cancels the download, can he use my boot disk to install lion as an upgrade? The reason I'm asking is that his Internet connection is rubbish and he can't download it. Presumably if I copy the dmg file to his hard disk I can run it that way?

Actually, you can burn a DVD or USB (8GB) thumb drive and let him boot and install from it. Or, you can actually run the InstallESD.dmg file from his machine. I've done both and Lion installs.
Personally, I would burn a DVD or thumb drive so you always have it.
Burn the InstallESD.dmg to a bootable DVD.
Launch Disk Utility and click the Burn button
Select the InstallESD.dmg file from your desktop as the image to burn. Insert a blank DVD and wait for the the image to be burned.
Burn the InstallESD.dmg to a bootable USB thumb drive.
Open Disk Utility and drag the InstallESD.dmg file to the left side pane. Go to the Partition tab ad select 1 Partition from the drop down menu. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) on the left. Click the Options button under the partition table and choose GUID Partition Table. You will need this to make the drive bootable on a Mac. Hit the Apply button when ready to format the drive (it will erase everything on the drive).
Click on the Restore tab and drag the InstallESD.dmg file to the Source. Drag the USB partition to the Destination. Hit the Restore button and it will create the bootable USB drive with the OS X Lion installer

I have big problems with mountain lion. you can not have a boot disk system I resulted in the need to re-download the os from scratch impiegandoci 8 hours, it is outrageous even with windows 95.

at least that the operator has confirmed to me that he called me. I also have problems with either the start of the mac with the power off. I can not understand if it crashes or is just very very slow.
Finally, I have a problem with the external hard disck. I often said to have been ejected incorrectly (not true) and I start to restore the startup recovery disk because disk utility is ineffective from the normal operating system .. is a shocking thing, but how you reduced. in four years it had never happened. seem to have windows or worse. You are on Windows 2000, you do not have a "Firefox" button, and should consider yourself to be fortunate in that you still have menus and don't have to do anything to get the menus back instead of the "Firefox" button. (The same applies to Windows XP users).
Use the "File" menu to get to Import. You are not on Windows 7 or Vista, and don't have to put up with the nonsense added for Aero.
If you want the "Firefox" button you can get it with View -> toolbars -> (uncheck) Menu Bar. The menu bar and the "Firefox" button were supposed to be mutually exclusive (which is impossible in some cases without being incompatible).

If you decide you want to make a boot disk, download the installer from the App Store and use one of there methods. Lion Diskmaker will do the work for you.

hi, i have tried all sorts of ways to make a boot disk with a working Disk warrior, i have tried bootcd( but doesnot work on 10.4) i have tried CLoneX, but it wont load Disk warrior, i have even created a disk image of my mac os X up grade disk and then put diskm warrior on it, (just drag and drop form the orginal disk image) , but itg wont load, at the moment, i am tring to use my mac os X install disk.....any tips would be great

I can only get so far. As it is installing to the emergency disk it stops with an error message:

Is there any way to make a snow leopard partition on an early 2011 MacBook Pro that was upgraded to Lion, without the original boot disk?

So I have an early 2011 MacBook pro, I believe it shipped with snow leopard originally, as I purchased and upgraded to Lion fairly early on. I am trying to make a partition right now and have it run snow leopard so I can use programs that have PowerPC.
I should note, I replaced both the RAM and the harddrive in my Macbook pro. I changed from 4 GB of ram (that came shipped) to 8 GB of ram from a 3rd party, that I installed on my own months ago, have registered in the computer and have been working fine for quite some time now.
Also I should note I replaced my harddrive. I went from what ever the standard 500 GB harddrive that shipped with 15 inch early 2011 MB pro's. I now have a 3rd party SSD that's 240GB's that I also installed on my own, (at the same time as the RAM---Black friday items) The harddrive has been working just fine since then.
In installing the harddrive I borrowed a friends external harddrive and used a program called carbon copy cloner to get everything over to the SSD.
Now here is my issue. I have ordered the Snow Leopard (10.6.3) install disks from apple, I have created a partition on my SSD for snow leopard, but when I try to select the install disc for snow leopard at boot I get three beeps.
I know this issue has been posted elsewere but it said answered and the answer is no longer available. I also am unsure if any of the RAM or Harddrive swapping could have been causing the issue. I have the old harddrive and RAM still, but unfortunatley have no external harddrive anymore or money to afford one.
Is there any way I can install a partition that runs snow leopard on my early 2011 MB pro with what I have (new SSD, New RAM, Current version Lion running, no external drive, lack of original snow leopard disks [I lost them ] and the general 10.6.3 snow leopard boot disks).
Let me know If there is anything I can do. I'm a now broke college student so i'd like to spend as little $$$$ as possible
*PS I should also note the DVD drive is working fine, it reads the disk, the disk is brand new, it plays DVD's fine and has never had any issues in the years i've used it for similar tasks*

As the last post suggests, call Apple and order a replacement original disc for about $17. They will ask you the model and serial numbers.
Your retail version of Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 will not work on that Mac as it requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.7 to boot and operate.
Another alternative is to again borrow another Mac to install your retail Snow Leopard into an external HD or partition, upgrade it to 10.6.8 and then clone it back to a partition on your MBP.

How do I make a boot disk in OSX 10.4 something and have some tools like Disk Warrior on it? I found one program at versiontracker that does this but it doesn't work in .4, oh well ...... or I can just wait for several days til my DiskWarrior CD comes in the mail ....... but who can be without their computer that long in today's day and age? yup, you guessed it, my powerbook won't start up and I've tried lots so far ...... hoping dw will do the trick.

Where can I get the Boot Disk for my macbook pro? Downloading OSX Lion is taking too long

I got a macbook pro that was owned by someone for a few days before. I tried to restore to factory setting but now downloading OSX Lion is taking forever with my internet connection. Can anyone help me find a boot Disk to speed up the process?

Apple no longer sells a Lion installation USB flash drive (they did at one time). SO you'll just have to wait for the download to complete. It's best to 'hard-wire' the download - not over wifi but with an Ethernet cable connected directly to your router. That will gain you some speed.
You could also try taking your MBP to a friend's home where they may have a faster Internet service. My download speed is 22+Mbps with my cable company - you may have a friend or neighbor who has something similar? Of course, you are always at the mercy of Apple's servers - sometimes they're just overloaded and a download that should take 20 minutes can take up to an hour and one-half.

How I make a boot disk

I'm an absolut Linux beginner and I tried to install archlinux on an external HDD, because my internal windows drives are dynamic logical Volumes and this doesn't work with Linux.
After the installation from the CD I noticed that I cannopt boot from USB HDD because of the BIOS.
How I make a boot disk (floppy) now ? The wiki guide doesn't help because if I boot from the installation CD I don't have the command fdformat and the command pacman - S grub works neither.
Can you help?

I found a grub boot disk on the net, it was a super grub boot disk. I deleted nearly all files and just copied my files from /boot/grub in the grub directory of the floppy disk. I used the windows tool "explore2fs" to get acces to my boot partition with the grub directory.
Her is my menu.lst:

It doesn't work, because the hd 2,0 is not found from grub. (Selected disk does not exist)
It seams that grub is not recognizing my usb hdd at start up ?!?! but this cannot be, because during the installation process it is.

Only if it is a FireWire interface. The G5's won't boot to a USB 2.0 drive.

I upgraded from 10.4.9 to .11 on my MacBook. Now I need to do a repair from utility, but my install .9 disk will not load. How can I download or create a .11 boot disk with repair option?
I am in Africa and pay by the minute..! so I will only be able to check mail periodically.

Thank you for your sharing of experience and interest.
The original install disk will not boot at startup, but I can select it from with prefs>startup drive.
This will probably be the best I can do, but if I have a major issue with the MacBook I will not be able to startup from a boot disk.
I am suspecting that there was a problem with the upgrade via the download to .11. The drive will also not reboot to target with holding the T key. Again, I can only select the Target mode from the prefs>startup file.
