Re: Drop in speed from 17Mbps to 5Mbps ...

I'm responsible for 3 separate BT broadband accounts at three different addresses in 3 parts of the country. I've recently "upgraded" all 3 routers to BT HomeHub4. Subsquently, there has been a dramatic FALL in download speeds at all 3 locations.  Can't be a coincidence!
The falls have been from 14 to 7; from 11 to 7; and from 6 to 4.
Are the new HomeHubs faulty, or is BT throttling them - perhaps to push us into ordering Infinity?
Unless things improve, I shall have to consider switching supplier, after a lifetime with BT.
All suggestions welcome.

the probability of all 3 hubs being faulty is extrememly remote and BT do not throttle the conenctions apart from p2p and then only on contracts prior to feb 2013

  • Drop in speed from 17Mbps to 5Mbps ...

Since last Wednesday my download speed has gone from 17Mbps to 5Mbps.
The service status for my area is all green lights and nothing has changed on my end (I have been working in IT for 20+ years).
I last checked it today (Monday) at 10:30 AM.
I have been with BT for nearly a month now so it shouldn't be to do with any 'settling down' issues, i know that your speed can vary for the first two weeks.
    Any help/info greatly appreciiated.

can you run btspeedtester and when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post results please.  if you don't have a HH4 can you post the adsl stats from your hub.  if you do have a HH4 can you go to hub manager then troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 entries where the router conencted to the internet which should give connection speed and noise margin - can you post please
have you checked quiet line test to see if any noise  dial 17070 option 2  should be quiet no hiss/crackle and best with corded phone  if cordless then dull hum normal

  • Re: Drop in speed from 17Mbps to 6.4Mbps

You should be so lucky! I tested my system today and it was the best it has been for weeks. Between the BT exchange and home it was 1.95MB, with a download speed of 1.68MB and an upload of 0.37MB.
Dropped from 17 to 6.4!!! I ask you..... And its costing me £25 a month.

  • Huge drop in speed from yesterday

    Hi
I posted on here a while back and received a lot of good advise about many BB issues that can be "unleashed" on the unsuspecting. Since then, I must be honest, my line has been quite stable and the speeds remained constant, that is until this morning.

As I cannot run another Speedtester for a few hours I have "binned" the HH2 after reading all about many issues and gone over to my BB Business Router as used by GD. I will now monitor the readings from that to see if there is anything untoward happening, and post later if required.
In the meantime, can anyone suggest why there should be such a huge drop from yesterday, as all the profiles have remained the same? I had not changed anything prior to the test and there are no issues from my end.
    Steve
The older I get, the faster I was!

    hi steve,
    um one word would explaing hte change in achieved download speed and that is ;
    congestion
your stats havend changed only the availability of bandwidth for data throughput, its quite common on exchanges with lots of connections for htis to happen during peek times (all day at weekends and roughly 5pm>midnight weekdays)
that you should see such a dramatic change would suggest that a lot of people are online at the same time in your area and all sharing the same ammount of bandwitch capacity.
it could be casued by an equipment failure or just the sheer number of connections stretching available capacity beyond normal parameters, changing routers would do little to change that, the other option is you tried to run the test when you had something using internet bandwidth at your property
the fact your sync speed is virtually the same and your ip profile has remaind the same would also indicate this as opposed to any real problems with hardware
and omfg you actually achieved a download of near ip profile numbers i want your connection rates /

  • Drop in Speeds

    Hello again.
Some of you may remember me from previous similar problems. I have bought this problem up with BTCare but they seem to be very busy and have yet had time to respond to my email.
Yesterday I was using my iPad when my connection dropped. I could not connect to anything via WiFi and don't have access to a wired connection. I restarted my Hub 2.0 (using the button on the side) which normally fixes the minor problem but this time my speeds dropped considerably. They went from a stable 5.5 down/0.7 up to a measly 0.01 down/0.1 up. This problem continued throughout yesterday until 4pm when I got an email from BT saying they changed my wireless channel, I then couldn't even connect to the hub despite all the lights being steady blue. I tried resetting the hub, still nothing. I managed to connect this morning for 20 minutes before it cut out again, just in time to reply to the email explaining the extra issues. This time restarting the hub gave me a connection but it's still rather slow.

I did the line noise test and there wasn't anything significant, maybe a very slight humming noise which only just audible.
I can test the connection via the test socket later if it is needed, if anyone can pass on the link to the page which shows you how to do so.
The people I have contacted seem to think it's a problem with the wireless but I'm not sure how I am supposed to fix this. There's no change to the surroundings, nothing that would cause this much of a drop in speeds from interference anyway. I've checked the wiring from the hub to the socket, reconnected it all after blowing off any dust. I will check to see if I have a spare filter lying around too in case that is the problem. Other than that, is there anything that springs to anyones mind?
Any chance of the hub being at fault?

Sorry, my connection dropped after my last post. It's not a problem with connecting to my iPad, I get these speeds on my PC too. It is connecting to my hub, not the other BT connections.
When it dropped yesterday, still connected to the test socket, it jut said unable to connect even after restarting. I'm connected this morning but still with low speed. I have changed the wireless channel, so has BT at their end. No changes.
I asked the yesterday what was happening as they said they'd contact me. They just said they were still looking into it.
Not sure if the filter is a problem so I'll try a new one later but other than that, I'm stumped at what else I can do my end to fix this.
i don't know if this is significant, but when the connection drops, I can't even connect to either BT WiFi either. I just read somewhere that said you should be ale to do so if your line is down.
i have a list of speed tests conducted randomly over the past few days. Sorry for the large picture, I cant make is smaller crom my ipad. These speed match those gained on my PC despite this being taken from my iPad. For some reason, a had a few seconds where the speed went up to its  usual Number.

  • Awful drop in speed...

For the last three days i have suffered an awful drop in speed from an already slow connection. The speed has gone from an average of around 1.2mbs to being lucky if i reach 0.4mbs. This makes even the simplist things difficult. I can no longer even watch the BBC iplayer the speed is that slow. This has been going on for a few days at first i gave BT the benefit of the doubt and thought the issue would just go away, but it hasn't. I'm not impressed with my speed when the connection is working correctly so to say i am NOT impressed now is a complete understatment. I have checked the BT Service Status and found no recent problems in my area so i presume everything is working as it should. So what would explain my sudden drop in speed. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
Sorry to hear about your problems.  It sounds like you may have been hit with a bit of interference.  This might be a failing bit of electrical equipment in your house, or in your area, that is introducing electrical interference onto the telphone line.  Lots of things can cause it (see here).  You can try a few self-help measures, but please be aware that it could be 2-3 days before you see an improvement.
The bottom line is if the interference is stopped, the line will become more stable and your speed will rise.  If the interference persists, the situation will stay the same or worsen.
Run the BT Speedtester regularly and keep an eye on your IP profile.  If that continues to drop, it is a sign of a continuing problems.
It's much easier to convince BT you have a problem if you have got a bit of evidence to support what you are saying!

  • Drop in Speed between airport express and express

    Hi all
I am quite new to this apple networking and got an issue to ask.
This is my environment. I am using 10mbps adsl. The encryption is WPA-2 Personal. All devices are using static IP. Airport extreme is 5th Generation and Airport express is 2nd generation with latest firmware.
I am connecting from my modem to airport extreme (using 2.4GHz on Channel 8) and to airport express (EX2). The location is about 70m away with 1 wall in between. I am able to achieve around 9-10mbps.
From Ex2, I join it using "Join to wireless network" and connect with physical straight cable LAN to WAN of another airport express (EX3). EX2 is on automatic channel for both 2.4GHz and 5 GHz (automatic as I cant change them). I set EX3 as "extend wireless network and is (using 2.4GHz on Channel 8).
I use airport express (EX1) and place it about 50m away. There is one server room with many networking devices in it. EX1 is on automatic channel for both 2.4GHz and 5 GHz (automatic as I cant change them).
Now I did a speed test on EX1 location and can only achieve 1.5-2.5mbps. I did a wifi detection test and there are many networking devices on channel 6 and 11 with few on channel 1-5.
I did tried to change manually for the 2.4GHz channels from 1-13 and 5GHz channels. The test speed results remain the same 1.5-2.5mbps at EX1.
Now my question is if I extend from airport express (EX3) to airport express (EX1), will it cause a drop n speed at EX1? Or was it due to the server room that causes the poor performance? I do not have access to the server room nor those devices in the room.

It presumably depends on what existing Av kit you have and how you plan to control things.
Neither AppleTV2 or Airport Express have in-built amplification for speakers.
AppleTV2 would require speakers with an optical input to work unless you wer eusing it with a Tv and Tv speakers.  In addition current software prevents optical working well unless HDMI also connected.
Airport Express has a combined miniToslink/analogue stereo audio out 3.5mm socket and if using for audio only would avoid the potential HDMI issues I mentioned above.
Other things to consider would be speakers like B&W Zeppelin Air with in-built Airplay for audio and powered speakers.
Apple's Remote app for iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch would be an excellent way to control multiple Airport devices played from iTunes.

  • How To Transfer MP3 Music Files At A 96kb speed, From A CD To A Zen Mic

I have a couple of CDs with MP3 music files on them. One problem is that the music is recorded at various speeds from 28 to 320kbs. I know of to transfer the files over, but I can't seem to lower the speed down to 96kb. I want to know if it is possible to change the recording speed to 96kb when transferring MP3 files from a CD source? Thanx

You can of course use one of a number of MP3 converters to change the track quality e.g. Creative's MediaSource converter. Be aware that dropping the bit-rate isn't the best approach, it's better to encode from the original CD.
And as others have said, I would strongly recommend staying at 28kbit/s for MP3 (using LAME) or at least listen to a test track or two before encoding the lot.

  • Error 200141 when trying to measure motor encoder's speed from PCI 6221 card,

    Hi,
I was trying to measure angular speed of a motor from its encoder signal. I'm using Ctr pin from PCI 6221 card take signals from the encoders. The problem comes when I've got an Error-200141 saying "data was overwritten before it could be read". I have tried a few ways as follows to overcome this problem.
         - Use DMA
         - Get rid of the noise from the signal by shielding the wire from encoder to DAQ card and using a capacitor.
None of those seemed to solve the problem completely. Even though the noise from the signal was removed, I could still see the mechanical glitter at the edge of all the pulses from the oscilloscope. Is that a possible cause of this problem (my technician told me we can do nothing with this glitter. In other words, we can't remove it)?
Please suggest me how to solve this Error-200141. With this message, I have also attached VI.
            Thank you very much.

    Hi Suksun,
Only had a quick glance at your code, but can you drop the samples to read to 100.
I think what the problem is from what I can make of your code, is that
you have a low frequency counter, that you measure on the rising edge,
however if you don't get a 1000 pulses within 100 seconds, DAQmx will
report an error. So by lowering the number of samples to read you
should be able to get 100 samples in 100 seconds, you should not
overwrite data as the buffer will be sized correctly.
    Hope this help

  • Sudden drop in speed

So I went to bed last night with the Internet running around 20 - 35mb down happy days, however I woke up this morning and it has dropped to bellow 1mb down (around 0.7mb) this is an almost impossible speed to use the Internet,  I have no idea why this has happened I have tried everything from resetting the router to seeing if my computers wireless adapter is playing up (it is not) and nothing, it has taken me all day to try and work out how to fix this problem but with my Internet running so slow it is taking to long, I did the BT speedcheck and apparently the drop in speed comes from within my house (great that helps me in no way ) I emailed BT but to no luck as they still haven't got back to me, can anyone offer any help or advise if you have come across this problem too and have solved it.

You need to run a BT diagnostic speedtest to find out what your IP profile is.

  • Drastic drop in speed - BT Infinity 2

For 10 day now, I have experienced a drastic drop in speed on all devices - two Macbook Pro laptops and two android phones.
I have run speed tests and availability tests whilst connected to the Home Hub 3 by ethernet, but have not rebooted any equipment as other threads on these boards indicate that this is likely to make things worse. Page load/refresh takes ages or hangs and streaming video, even short low-res youtubes either won't load or are choppy.
Speed tests have varied between 18Mbps and 38 Mbps download speed and 2.5 to 8.5 Mbps Upload speed.
Test results as follows - can anyone shed any light on this?  I emailed BT 36 hours ago and have recieved no response and past experience tells me I will get a scripted call from someone with no technical knowledge anyway
    Any help is gratefully appreciated

Good morning Dax1 and welcome to the forum.......
Can you carry out the "quiet line" test ? Using a corded phone plugged into the test socket on the master socket, dial 17070 and choose option 2. There should be no crackles, popping, buzzing, etc, in fact, it should be quiet........
Can you post the stats from your homehub ?

  • Drop in speed for no reason!

Hi, Im new to the forums go easy on me lol,
Having a problems with infinity at the moment with the speed of the internet. Ive lost just over 30meg download speed from around 52 to 20 and its been like this for about 4 days now. i have tried resetting hub and open reach modem and it does nothing. Ive been intouch with bt which said they will look into it registered a fault but have not been back intouch. we.ve had no power cuts or anything like that so i cant understand why it would do this its been pretty good up until now. Could someone help me with this as i dont want to get back on the phone for them to tell me the same thing as they do everytime i ring them.
    Many Thanks
    Andy

    Welcome to the forum.
Do not keep re-setting the modem, as it is seen by the Dynamic Line Management (DLM) system as a drop in connection.  This means it thinks the line is not stable, and so drops your speed.
You can reset the hub (the black one) every day, but please don't re-set the white modem.
Hopefully, your speed will then start to increase, but it could take a few weeks.
    Good luck!

Just wondering if anyone has found a solution to the problem of huge drop in speed when using VPN since the latest upgrade to the IOS kicked in?

    Hey,
Thanks for the reference, the Web site explains a lot. And yes, my prefessor is from another country, so understanding his english is a little rough.
I have read the info, and tried to apply it to my problem but the simple program will still not run. It compiles fine but when I type the following in cprompt:
java DisplayData <- (my file name)
I still get the same error message. I understand that it cannot find the class path, but his explanation of what to do about my problem isn't clear. Or maybe I'm not understanding him correctly.
If you can assist any further help, it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Sudden huge drop in speed

Yesterday I had infinity installed and after the engineer left I did a speed test that showed my download speed to be 37Mb+ with and upload speed of 1.8Mb after sorting out the vision box which I had to disconnect all the power to the PC and BT routers I did a speedtest and find that the speed has dropped from 37Mb+ down to 1.62Mb with 0.51Mb upload I know there are variations in the speed especially during the first 10 days but I certainly didn't expect to drop the download speed by 95%
Are drops in speed like this normal or what?

    Hi wildthing666,
Sorry to hear of the problems you've been having. If you are still having the same issues, please post up a bit more information on your setup (i.e. how many computers you have and how they are connected to your Homehub etc.) along with the results from a test at www.speedtester.bt.com and we might be able to identify what the problem is.
