Re: E540 bios update to 2.17 fails, the system program file was not found

Unfortunately all versions of the BIOS available from Lenovo's site have a bug that doesn't play well with linux. The workaround is to turn OFF USB 3.0 in the BIOS settings. (You can still use the USB ports, just not as USB 3.0.)
Here's a posting with more links if you would like to learn more.
As for updating the BIOS, maybe one could get the updater to work using FreeDOS bootable image, or more likely a linux image with WINE on it... ?
On my new E540 I "cheated" by keeping Windows 7 cluttering up my hard drive for awhile. I have booted Windows only twice, and I NEVER let it connect to the Internet, but I downloaded the .exe version of the BIOS updater and ran it from a USB stick. (It runs as a Windows software installer, which is odd to me.)

@conwaytwt How could FreeDOS be used for updating BIOS? I don't think wine will work.
By the way, I tried extracting bios files from the .exe according to different advice in http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/BIOS_Upgrade but they failed.
@joonsar, I made that comment without thinking too much ... I have other (older) systems where the BIOS upgrades were always released as DOS executables... because they would run in Windows but also if your system had a floppy disk drive... :-) (obviously very old information nowadays).
Here is a link describing what I was imagining -- a bootable FreeDOS image: http://pingtool.org/bootable-dos-iso-bios-upgrade/ -- note this person combined FreeDOS and some Windows utility to make a bootable disc image. I suspect you could cobble together something similar using linux utilities, too.
--> HOWEVER I do not know if the bios upgrade .exe provided by Lenovo can run in DOS mode... I haven't tried it.
ANOTHER option (I haven't tried!!!) would be to create a bootable Windows PE image. I believe there are some around, but now that I look, all the procedures involve creating the image from within a Windows environment (a Google search points to several options). Oh and of course Windows PE technically requires an existing Windows license, though I don't think it checks.
Making a DOS image...
Today I realized the Ubuntu USB "Startup Disc Creator" only seems to work with linux images (maybe only Ubuntu). To create a FreeDOS USB you'll need to install unetbootin and use that utility. As it turns out it can make a bootable USB from (an older version of) FreeDOS on its own, but I just used it to create a FreeDOS 1.1 image. (just to see if I could)
UPDATE: I installed FreeDOS 1.1 to the USB stick with unetbootin. I couldn't get it to boot. SO I had unetbootin create a FreeDOS 1.0 image. It booted, but I didn't play with it long. The next step would be to try copying the Lenovo BIOS update .exe to it to see if it runs, but I don't want to run it again on MY system....
I did notice unetbootin knows how to create all sorts of images on its own, including some other kinds of rescue images, but I haven't read about them.... you might have a look?
Here's what I did (a week or two ago) to update my BIOS:
I still have Windows cluttering my hard drive for just this reason (based on sad experience with a Dell). I downloaded the .exe file and copied it to a USB stick, booted into Windows, and opened the .exe file. The software ran as a Windows installer. It asked me to approve it, installed something somewhere, and then asked me to reboot Windows to do the actual install. BY THE WAY, the actual install looked sortof like a DOS installer, so it's POSSIBLE the .exe might run under FreeDOS.
P.S.: Lenovo seems to have done something odd to their own bootable disc image to make it look "empty" to some linux  software -- I confirmed there IS an image in the file (you can dump it and see things in it) but the Image Mounter and other linux utilities think it's an "empty" file. I suspect you could modify a character or two somewhere and make it easier to burn or make a USB stick in linux.

  • Photoshop CS6 updated Raw and now get message saying "Could no complete your request the file was not found." Help

I updated CS6 Camera Raw as it would not read my D7100 raw files. Since that I cannot open jpegs.
Also, I go to Photoshop - About Plug-In - Camera Raw and get a pop up window saying "Could not complete the Camera Raw command because the file was not found."

I apologize, guess I wasn't very good in giving info. It is on a Mac running Snow Leopard. I did the CS6 updates through Help/Updates but that did not update to where my camera (Nikon D7100) raw files could be read. I searched around on Adobe's site for the Camera Raw update that took care of reading them, forget what page I finally found a download link on but the update was a singular installer for Camera Raw. Once updated Photoshop CS6 stopped being able to 'find files' even when the file is dragged onto the Photoshop icon, or through the menu's Open. I have since uninstalled everything reinstalled the suite from the original installer. I know have a Photoshop that will open jpegs but just not my camera's raw files. Thanks for any help that you think might take care of the problem. I am not going to update the Camera Raw unless I can find out what happened and what to do to prevent it. I switched my camera to take jpegs until if and when I solve the mystery. :-) Thanks!

app may fix this problem-what do I do?

I suggest that you start by reviewing the following About.com article. It will help you troubleshoot the missing Dnssnd.dll file.
If the issue is related to an AirPort Extreme base station, the cause may be a missing or incomplete installation of Bonjour for Windows. In this case I would recommend downloading and installing the latest version directly from Apple here.

    Tank You.

    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\Plug-ins\CS3\MediaCore
Production Premium apps (PPro, SB, AE, Encore) will try to load plugins placed in the above folder. This is good and bad. It's good because you place them in one location and they are shared. It's bad because if the plugin was written specifically for peremiere, it may not work correctly in Soundbooth.
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS3\Plug-ins\..
Plugins placed in the premiere folder only get loaded in to premiere.
Usually plugin manufacturer decides where they should go and you shouldn't have to worry about it. I recommend not moving them around unless there is a problem with them.

  • New iTunes update won't open.  First it said Apple Mobil Device failed to start.  So I Stopped then Started Apple Mobil Device.  Now iTunes still won't load.  Tells me MSVCR80.dll was not found.  Wants me to reinstall app.  Will I lose all my music?

Current iTunes update won't load.  Tells me MSVCR80.dll was not found.  Wants me to reboot.  If I reboot, will I lose my music?

    Hi DDay@55,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
To resolve this error, I recommend completely removing and reinstalling iTunes and all of its related components using these steps:
    Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
    Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
    Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
You can find the article with these steps and more information here:
iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
This process should not affect any music or content on your computer, but you may want to
back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive.
    Best,
    Jeremy

  • This application has failed to start because msvcr71.dll was not found

    Hi,
I just downloaded the Flex 3.3 DK from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=flex3sdk
Once unzipped I went to run this:
    C:\DATA\My Documents\_jim\flash\open-source\_Software\flex_sdk_3\bin\mxmlc.exe
When I ran it, I got this error
This application has failed to start because msvcr71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem
I searched on Google, and found this:
    http://www.flashdevelop.org/community/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2932&start=15
So from there, downloaded "msvcr71.dll", placed here:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32
And ran the following in the Command prompt: regsvr32 "msvcr71.dll".
When I did that, I got this error message:
msvcr71.dll was loaded but the DLLRegisterServer entry point was not found
    The file was not registered
I saw that the DLL is related to Microsoft Visual Basic Runtime, so I deleted the dll I saved manually, and ran the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86) from here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/thankyou.aspx?familyId=9b2da534-3e03-4391-8a4d-074b9f2b c1bf&displayLang=en
Once done, the dll was not placed in the System32 folder.
I tried the manual install of the DLL again, but on trying to register it again, got the same error message.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Seems like I might have hit a brick wall.
    Thanks

  • I was updating Firefox from version 6 to version 7, after updating I tried to open Firefox and the message I got is this: This application has failed to start because xul.dll was not found. How can I fix this?

I was updating Firefox to the newest version 7.0.1 from version 6.0.2 I think it was, I clicked the restart Firefox button that always comes up after updating. It started updating and then Firefox never restarted like it was supposed to after it was done updating. I then tried to open Firefox and it told me "This application has failed to start because xul.dll was not found." I did have Firefox crash on maybe about 30 minutes or so earlier which bothered me because I have been using Firefox for years and never had it crash on me before but I didn't think much of it at the time it happened because I was able to go back onto Firefox and finish what I had been working on. A while later I checked for updates and updated. The first time I tried to update it didn't work though so I had to shutdown Firefox and reopen Firefox and start the update a second time. It was after the second time that when I tried to open Firefox I got that message about failing to start because xul.dll can't be found. I filed a crash report when my Firefox crashed. This would have been around 1am-2am in the morning that Firefox first crashed and then wouldn't allow me to open it after updating. I have a DELL laptop running the Windows XP operating system but the laptop is probably at least 6 or 7 years old. The laptop will no longer charge so I always have to have it plugged into an outlet. Both my laptop hard drive and my external hard drive give me messages that I am running out of disk space on my hard drive. I bought this laptop 6 or 7 years ago second hand so it could be even older. In short it's a piece of crap and it gives me all kinds of issues but I currently can't afford a new one, but I have never had any problems with Firefox and I use Firefox more than any other aspect of my laptop so it's really really bothering me. May you please help me fix it?

Unfortunately I tried that and it didn't work. Thanks for the help though. I tried to uninstall and it said I couldn't because the file is corrupt or something, but I think I finally got it uninstalled and/or deleted or whatever, but now I try to reinstall/download it again from the beginning and I can't. No matter what I do I can not get Firefox working again. No matter how many times I try to redownload it. Any other suggestions?

I received an iTunes update today and updates files. Tonight, I couldn't acces my iTunes. • HT6001 I have tried numerous time to update iTunes to Version 11.1.4.  Each time it has failed. I get the message of "This application has failed to start because MSVCR80.dll was not found".  Also I get a message of "Error 7". Advise please.

I have tried numerous time to update iTunes to version 11.1.4.  It has failed every time.  Now I can't even get into iTunes on my PC.  The message I get is "This application has failed to start because MSVCR60.dll was not found.  Re-installing the application may fix the problem."  Okay. Which application?  What steps are needed for this process?
Also, I get this message "iTunes was not installed correctly.  Please reinstall iTunes.  Error 7 (Windows error 126)"  Could someone please assist me in the steps necessary to remedy this issue.  Thanks.

For many users at this point in time (iTunes 11.1.4.62) uninstalling iTunes alone is not enough and they may need to undertake further steps...
Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.
